My Favorite Thing is Monsters
My Favorite Thing is Monsters | Emil Ferris
Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late 60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karens investigation takes us back to Ankas life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.

I‘ve had this graphic novel on my shelves for years. I now read it for one of my reading challenges. The graphics are amazing, yet all over the place, just like the various storylines. Not my kind of book but I know I am selling it short, I can totally see why it is unique in its sort. #TBRTarot

The threads of this story were a bit all over the place, but they came together at the end and the caliber of the art kept me reading until they did. Printed as if you‘re looking at a spiral bound lined school notebook covered with crosshatch pencil drawings , the art style is totally unique and completely engaging.

I spent much of the book thinking “the author is really taking on too much with this plot.” Having finished it, I think there‘s some validity in that view...but I have to admit I was completely absorbed over the final third of the story. The worst part is that I didn‘t realize this wasn‘t a stand alone graphic novel until I hit the final page and the next installment has been pushed back to next September!!😱🤬😭

CaroPi They have been moving the second part so often that I can't recall. I pre order mine a couple of years ago... Literally. I just check my email I order it in March of 2018... So if you are frustrated imagine me. Or many others that still dreaming with the date of the publication to have the magic pubic book in their hands... 3y
JoeMo @CaroPi Oh my god!😲I had seen where it was supposed to come out this fall, but didn‘t realize it had already been pushed back several times/years...at least this could end up being great for the author though, since the work has been gaining fans over the past few years. I had just learned about it from a list of graphic novels fit for the Halloween season! I really hope it lives up to expectations for you whenever it finally drops!👍 3y

I think I was expecting more from this graphic novel based on some of the reviews I had read. It didn‘t work as strongly for me - found the main character very distant. That being said, I will read the sequel coming later in the year. That might bring the whole story into focus and give me a new perspective to reassess this first book.

#BiblioMAYnia Day 14: This is a clear #SequelPlease, hopefully soon. This is a book that one should take time reading. It is hefty, fairly thick and detailed, and tears at one‘s insides. I had to take a breather for every major section as it was pretty heavy going. Yet, there is also that voyeuristic aspect to the storytelling, compelling the reader to look further and deeper. Ferris creates the art journal and diary of Karen Reyes, a 1960s Chicago pre-teen, balancing the difficulties of her own adolescence with a family that‘s only marginally stable. And what she wants most in the world is to become a werewolf.

If you like a quirky kid, stories of growing up too fast, and fantastic art, give this graphic novel a whirl.

I absolutely adore this graphic novel! It's huge and heavy, but so worth the read! Karen Reyes is a 10 yr old monster loving artist who uses her notebook and drawings to capture the essence of her emotions and surroundings as she lives with her ill mother, her sometimes dysfunctional brother and a murder in their building. A superb read; some of the most awesome line drawing I've ever seen. Can't wait to get my hands on Vol. 2! 🤗

Celebrating spring and feeling better by relaxing this afternoon with this AMAZING graphic novel. This is my eighth time reading it. It is one of the most incredible works of art I have ever seen, and even though it won awards, it could stand to win another 100 or so. The sad news is Vol. 2 appears to have been pushed until 2020. 😢 But that‘s okay, it will be worth the wait. (This could also be me spreading misinformation - let‘s hope!) 📚❤️📚

Okay. WOW.

Emil Ferris knows how to construct a story, y'all. This comic has layers on layers on layers, and each one gives the reader about a million new puzzle pieces to consider. Nothing's simple, whether it's Karen's family dynamic, the politics of her Chicago neighbourhood, the murder she sets out to solve, or the true nature of each monster she encounters. The ending gets a bit abstract, but it's still damned remarkable.

Art-wise... ⬇️

xicanti to be honest, Ferris's style ain't my favourite. It's heavily crosshatched, and most of the characters have the sort of round, exaggerated features that hit my eye the wrong way. My aesthetic preferences aside, I can't imagine this would be as effective in any other mode. The story DEMANDS busy art that makes everyone look at least a little monstrous and forces the reader to dig deep. I admire Ferris's design choices very much. #caseyplusbooks 5y
