Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year History | Kurt Andersen
A razor-sharp thinker offers a new understanding of our post-truth world and explains the American instinct to believe in make-believe, from the Pilgrims to P. T. Barnum to Disneyland to zealots of every stripe . . . to Donald Trump. In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen demonstrates that whats happening in our country todaythis strange, post-factual, fake news moment were all living throughis not something entirely new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character and path. America was founded by wishful dreamers, magical thinkers, and true believers, by impresarios and their audiences, by hucksters and their suckers. Believe-whatever-you-want fantasy is deeply embedded in our DNA. Over the course of five centuriesfrom the Salem witch trials to Scientology to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, from P. T. Barnum to Hollywood and the anything-goes, wild-and-crazy sixties, from conspiracy theories to our fetish for guns and obsession with extraterrestrialsour peculiar love of the fantastic has made America exceptional in a way that we've never fully acknowledged. With the gleeful erudition and tell-it-like-it-is ferocity of a Christopher Hitchens, Andersen explores whether the great American experiment in liberty has gone off the rails. From the start, our ultra-individualism was attached to epic dreams and epic fantasiesevery citizen was free to believe absolutely anything, or to pretend to be absolutely anybody. Little by little, and then more quickly in the last several decades, the American invent-your-own-reality legacy of the Enlightenment superseded its more sober, rational, and empirical parts. We gave ourselves over to all manner of crackpot ideas and make-believe lifestyles designed to console or thrill or terrify us. In Fantasyland, Andersen brilliantly connects the dots that define this condition, portrays its scale and scope, and offers a fresh, bracing explanation of how our American journey has deposited us here. Fantasyland could not appear at a more perfect moment. If you want to understand the politics and culture of twenty-first-century America, if you want to know how the lines between reality and illusion have become dangerously blurred, you must read this book. This is an important bookthe indispensable bookfor understanding America in the age of Trump. Its an eye-opening history filled with brilliant insights, a saga of how we were always susceptible to fantasy, from the Puritan fanatics to the talk-radio and Internet wackos who mix show business, hucksterism, and conspiracy theories.Walter Isaacson

Sorry been busy @AsYouWish but thanks for the tag! @Eggs

Yes I read every day!
#wondrouswednesday

I use audiobooks to get a lot of my reading in - chores at home, driving around, playing mindless games when I need a break, etc. I also read graphic novels and hope to get back to novels more soon.

I prefer fantasy for comfort.

Hey guys!!♥️🤗 @Chrissyreadit @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks Just throwing some suggestions out there! Let me know if you‘ve read them or you don‘t like any of them and I will suggest others. All are different areas of fantasy, so I guess it depends on what you‘re in the mood for: I will try to tag them below as well! 🙃

HOTPock3tt I have always been curious to read a Sanderson… (edited) 3y
HOTPock3tt I‘ve been wanting to reread this because I was reading like 8 books at the time lol (edited) 3y

Laughterhp So I‘ve read Mistborn and The City of Brass. I read them both this year so wouldn‘t want to reread them. I‘d be okay with any of the other 3. I really like the sound of A Deal with the Elf King. 3y
Chrissyreadit I really like A Deal With The Elf King! That would be my first choice. 3y
Chrissyreadit I also just stacked From Blood And Ash- that sounds good too as a second choice. 3y
TheAromaofBooks A Deal With the Elf King sounds good to me, too!! I haven't read any of the others, though, so I'm pretty flexible!! 3y

I remember getting through my first listen in a single workday and wish I could do that again but alas.

I wish I could give this a rating between “pick” and “so-so.” There are fascinating tidbits of history in this book, but if you‘re looking for a cohesive argument that connects these tidbits over a 500 year span to point to some singular cultural trait or origin for our tendency to believe in scams, religious fundamentalism, conspiracy theories, the cult of celebrity, etc. until we spiraled downward into the “post-fact” world, this isn‘t it.

Andersen‘s idea that the uniquely American propensity to believe far-fetched theories and doubt science has been ingrained since the time of the Puritans and reinforced throughout our history is certainly a worthwhile topic to think on. However, his negative views towards more recent forms of self expression and hobbies seems misplaced and reads like someone from a different era upset that newer generations don‘t take things seriously enough.

So tomorrow is my 32nd birthday and I just went to the bookstore. I couldn't find anything that took my fancy right away. I'd really like to read something entirely different. I'm thinking fantasy, maybe science-fiction. I'm also interested in scary books featuring witches or ghosts or anything else supernatural. (I'm loving that television series). Maybe even an fairytale adaptation. What book should I order? Hit me with all your ideas.

BookmarkTavern Well, happy birthday tomorrow! If you like YA, a supernatural fantasy series I adore is The Old Kingdom Series by Garth Nix. First book is Sabriel. For fairy tale retellings, I highly recommend Robin McKinley. Especially her novel Beauty. 4y

I made the mistake of reading and listening to this too quickly and frequently felt frustrated by all the things that have led to a lack of basic scientific literacy. It‘s easy to get overwhelmed with Andersen‘s compilation of facts that got us to the “fake news” era where lies are accepted as truth. It was a book club read and led to a great discussion. We all agreed it was worth reading.

Admittedly, I‘m a nonfiction fan. The funny thing is, I used to say “oh I don‘t read nonfiction.” But now I do. Never say never, people. Here‘s where I am with the #nonfiction2019 bingo board. Thanks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa for keeping this one going for another year. I love having squares to fill!

Kaye You‘re doing great. I love NF and always have, although fiction is good too. I always feel like I‘m learning more by reading NF books. Not sure it‘s true, as you can learn something from ANY book you read. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve thought about trying that, but I don‘t think I could do it...I need a NF break occasionally, plus now with Litsy I‘d have to turn down every great buddy read that wasn‘t NF, that would be very hard....maybe in a few years after I finish some of the longer ones like Pratchett and Tolkien? 🤔 6y
Cinfhen Thanks for sharing the article 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks! I hope you like Sapiens. I‘m kinda mixed about it. Was hoping it would be more captivating. But, you may feel differently. I have such mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it‘s a great exploration of fantastical thinking and how we‘ve grown to have so much of it in the US over time. On the other hand, it‘s marred to near ruin by snark and hyperbole. This is a shame because there is much here which is valuable. If you can see past the unfortunate tone, have at it.

I'm having a hard time with this book, and I'm only in the first chapter. He's contradicted himself already, and I have concerns about the data he's using, because the data is flawed, and I'm concerned about his bias toward presenting this type of data as the ultimate truth we all need to open our eyes to. I'm going to keep listening for now, because his bias leans liberal, but I can't help feeling he's the wrong person to have written this book.

RaimeyGallant Giving up in chapter 3. I think the author is on to an intelligent overarching theory, but there is not enough care taken with his sub theories, and I find it disheartening that this lack of care with facts is so prevalent in a book intending to prove how America has strayed from a culture of truth. Give me a revised edition after heavy fact-checking, and I would pick this up again. 7y
tsutrav Glad to see I‘m not the only one struggling here. I want to read this one, but it has sat untouched since January & I‘m still on Chapter 2. I keep hoping he‘ll try and objectively present a viewpoint, even with the obvious bias, but I‘m beginning to think the author is beyond bias and just has an ax to grind. 7y
KimHM Rats. I was hoping to get to this. Can you give an example or two of his factual errors? 7y
See All 7 Comments
RaimeyGallant @KimHM For example, and I'm not going to re-listen, so I can't be sure, but I think he credited the person who coined the term cosplay with actually having invented the trend. But please read or listen for yourself. It's not one or two things. It was a lot of things, and I was only three chapters in. Because he wasn't accurately representing facts that I knew something about, I didn't feel I could trust him in areas I knew nothing about. (edited) 7y
Graywacke Appreciate the critical reading. 7y
KimHM That‘s disappointing, isn‘t it? 7y
RaimeyGallant @KimHM It is. I think we're all starving for this book and others like it. We want it so bad, the publisher perhaps rushed it to print without due diligence. 7y

There are so many things wrong with this book. The whole premise is a forced hypothesis bc he cherry picked examples throughout history to say that many Americans live in a fantasyland (not based in fact or science). The book was hastily written and it could have been good if he had stuck to examples based in fact.

The biggest problem with this book is that it whitewashes history and erases any experience for someone who isn‘t straight or white.

RaimeyGallant I'm in the first chapter, and I don't think I can go on. 7y

As a fan of The author's public radio show Studio 360, I was curious to explore his writing in greater depth. Part way through, I took a break to listen to another book because the scope of the book was wide, but the material only described in brief. Somewhere I read this was a work of 'revisionist' history, which strikes me as an apt description. There are lots of dots connected in ways I had not considered. In the end, I was glad to finish it.
