Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals
Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals | Alyssa Cole
167 posts | 149 read | 1 reading | 64 to read
From acclaimed author Alyssa Cole comes the tale of a city Cinderella and her Prince Charming in disguise . . .Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn't have time for fairy tales...or patience for the constant e-mails claiming she's betrothed to an African prince. Sure. Right. Delete! As a former foster kid, she's learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, and a silly e-mail won't convince her otherwise.Prince Thabiso is the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo, shouldering the hopes of his parents and his people. At the top of their list? His marriage. Ever dutiful, he tracks down his missing betrothed. When Naledi mistakes the prince for a pauper, Thabiso can't resist the chance to experience life--and love--without the burden of his crown. The chemistry between them is instant and irresistible, and flirty friendship quickly evolves into passionate nights. But when the truth is revealed, can a princess in theory become a princess ever after?

4/5⭐ The character work is great & I ended up liking both leads, but more separately than together because I feel that Thabiso went past the point of no return by not telling the truth sooner. The conflict resolution felt rushed.

The epidemic subplot also resolved very quickly at the last second. That said, I really enjoyed the worldbuilding, the way the character & plot arcs intertwined, & the promise of side characters in future books. #roll100

I‘ve been meaning to read more romances, and Alyssa Cole has been at the top of my list for awhile. Inspired by Bridgerton, I finally got that kickstarted. An easy, perfectly formulated romance, this book did not disappoint.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Well this book was an absolute joy. If you‘re looking for 🔥🔥 as opposed to slow burn this book has it. The storyline was very compelling and the characters I got attached to quickly. I will definitely be reading the next in this series. #read2021 #booked2021 #mustacheoncover

Alyssa Cole is now an auto-buy author for me. I fell in love with her romances when I read this novel set it what feels like a less-superpowered Black Panther universe. The main characters are flawed, but you're rooting for them; the side-characters are fleshed out (so that when the sequels focus on their stories, you're excited!); and there is just enough royal intrigue to keep you interested beyond the sexy parts. ❤️

#IntegrateYourShelf

ChasingOm I just took a look at my shelf on Goodreads of books I'm looking forward to being published in 2021, and of the 19 I have tagged, 11 are romances. Six of those are by authors of color. 💜 4y

LoveToReadLiveToRead After reading Take A Hint Dani Brown, I‘d say Talia Hibbert. That was a great book and I definitely want to follow the series. 4y
ChasingOm @LoveToReadLiveToRead I love her too! I‘ve posted about the second in the series twice over the past month though, lol, so I went with Cole. 😂 4y
LoveToReadLiveToRead @chasingom haha! She had me with the first line of that book. “The moon was high and full, the night was ripe for witchy business and Daniela Brown had honey on her tit.” 😂 4y
Butterfinger Yes. Absolutely Christopher Paul Curtis, Jacqueline Watson, Jason Reynolds. Can you tell that I teach? 4y
Amandajoy I think the only auto-buy author for me is Yaa Gyasi, but I haven‘t read her latest yet, so maybe 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
rachelsbrittain I adore Alyssa Cole! I've read all her Reluctant Royals and Runaway Royals so far, and am listening to When No One is Watching right now 4y
Librariana For me, it's Elizabeth Acevedo hands down 😊 I've loved all three of her books and a favorite was 4y
MeganAnn I loved Alyssa Cole‘s reluctant royals series! 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I think all my auto-hold authors are white. 🤔 I hope I‘ll expand the list as I read more authors of color! I really liked the one Alyssa Cole book I read and should try more. 4y
rockpools If my library EVER buys more Attica Locke, I‘ll be reading it! And doubly so if it‘s on audio narrated by JD Jackson! 4y
ChasingOm @Butterfinger I wish I had had teachers like you! Reynolds is a fave on audio. @Amandajoy I bought her first one when it first came out and still haven‘t read it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ @Librariana I looooove Acevedo on audio! She‘s an auto-hold for sure. 4y
ChasingOm @rockpools Attica Locke is fantastic! I‘ve only read her recent Texas Rangers books, but I want to read some of her backlist this year. 4y

This book was awesome! I laughed and some parts really hit me in the feels. I couldn‘t put it down.

Ledi gets an email claiming she‘s betrothed to an African prince. Between work and grad school she doesn‘t have time for that nonsense. Thabiso knew his betrothed was out there after her parents ran from their country. He hides his identity to get to know Ledi, until it all comes out and Ledi is shocked that she may actually be a princess.

I missed the first day of #20Series20Days, so here‘s a two for one! Contemporary romances are what I‘ve been using to signal to my brain that it‘s okay to relax lately. These two series by Black women are a great way to integrate my reading while still enjoying the story.

I immediately loved Ledi, the badass STEM smarty whose prickliness was a reasonable response to trauma and injustice. Thabiso was more difficult, with his extreme privilege, but I came around to him as well. There is good consent content, but it is somewhat cancelled out by the drawn out false identity situation. I loved some of the side characters, especially Likotsi and Regina, so I'll likely have to read their novellas. 👩🏽‍🤝‍👨🏾

I've been at my mom's for a few days helping my sister officially move back home (and cleaning my own old stuff out of the basement...) but I managed to get some early morning reading time in! This was a fun contemporary romance with a fairy tale spin, and I really liked our smart and tough epidemiologist protagonist Ledi. I didn't feel like it held my attention consistently, but I'm trying not to blame the books for that these days.

First, I loved that this started with a play on the “Nigerian prince” emails that were quite popular several years ago. Second, I really enjoyed this, I recommend the audio. Third, I pictured the guy as the dude from Black Panther.

MidnightBookGirl I mean, Chadwick Boseman is hot, so that's a good visual. 5y

My second foray into romance & it was good! Definitely the nice little escape I needed, except for the epidemic part, LOLSOB. I was able to skip past sex scenes, tho did appreciate clear consent on the page. Loved that Ledi is a scientist but she did act a bit daft/gullible at times. And there was a weird creepy curveball at the end that felt unnecessary & kind of silly. But it was breezy & fun and I‘ll certainly read more from the series! 3/5 ⭐️

Beachesnbooks The 3rd book in the series is my favorite 😀 5y

Okay...I‘ve always said I had no interest in romance books, mainly b/c being ace, I‘m rather averse to reading sex scenes. BUT I really liked The Lady‘s Guide to Celestial Mechanics in Feb (feels like 6 years ago) & found it‘s easy to just skip past the steamy parts. Doubt someone‘s gonna yell out a key plot point while they‘re banging. And I need some fun, lighthearted stuff right now, as do we all. Heard great things about this one! #nowreading

I liked this. I definitely got some if Coming to America had a romance book daughter this would be it. Prince Thabiso is in America to do some business but also demand answers from a young woman who was betrothed to him but whose family fled the kingdom when she was a baby. Then he discovers she has no idea about her past but is a thriving epidemiology grad student. Enter romantic ruse. Cute stuff. The ending was a little sudden but I enjoyed it.

I loved this book! It was funny and light. I think my favorite element was that all the awkward, embarrassing moments happened to the male MC, not the woman, and TBH, that probably made it funnier to me. Read it in one day and it was the perfect pick-me-up. This was my first Alyssa Cole, but it will not be my last!

Reggie Because of the RWA mess, the Rita‘s were cancelled. But the Ripped Bodice people chose 9 outstanding romances from last year and Alyssa Cole is the only person to have multiple books on the list. Good for her. 5y

This was a really cute fun romance and I appreciated the main character, the world and the gorgeous casual representation so much. I think I enjoyed it as much as I could enjoy a romance novel, I see why people love it! Unfortunately romance isn‘t the genre for me so while I can‘t say I loved it, I‘m glad I read it cause it‘s always good to widen what you have a go at and read what other people love.

Cathythoughts I‘m not a romance fan either. Well done god trying one 👍🏻 5y
Caterina Romance isn't usually my genre either, but I love Alyssa Cole! Just discovered her last year via this one and An Extraordinary Union, and love the exact things you mentioned! I love that you read it even though you're not a romance person 😊 5y
Emilymdxn @Caterina I‘m very glad I gave it a go! Weirdly I love romance in movies but never like it in books I‘m not sure why that is! Alyssa Cole is clearly fantastic, I have so much respect for her tho I probably won‘t read any more 5y

I know, I know, I'm late to the Alyssa Cole train. But after reading Royal Holiday and having this one on my three for so long, I decided to finally give it a listen. And boy am I happy I did! Such a cute story-- exactly the kind of royal romance I was hoping for after Royal Holiday, and the audiobook was great. I stayed up way too late several nights in a row listening to it while I crocheted.

Full disclosure: I don't read Romance novels.

Then why'd I read A Princess in Theory? One, I'd seen readers rave about Cole's works, so I've had her on my to-read list for a couple years now. And two, this book in particular fit a challenge I'm doing on GR: A retelling of a certain tale type you would NOT normally read... I selected Cinderella.

Thankfully, Ledi is easy to like, respect & root for. And the pop culture references are fun to spot.
