Corrigan teaches a class about Gatsby and this feels like a lecture from a professor you like and also wants you to think hard about the information you're given. Gatsby is divisive, being either loved or hated, but a look at Fitzgerald's misfit existence and longings put a lot into perspective. This will feel intimate to New Yorkers and Long Islanders and bring you right back to high school English class.

This one‘s like sitting through a really interesting lecture on a really familiar book. I loved hearing her discuss the symbolism and themes of the novel as well as various reactions and understandings of what is considered one of the greatest American novels available. She‘s a Fitzgerald fan through and through, and a little biased in believing he can do no wrong, but that‘s okay. My English teacher heart is full. #nerdalert

I love seeing Long Island in print in any form but especially when I know exactly what is being discussed. This was pre-highways but about an hour on Northern Boulevard is fairly accurate still today! (Thanks Google Maps 😁) I'm also checking at 12pm during a pandemic so not as much vehicle traffic as normal but maybe closer to the 30s or 40s volume.

An interesting Gatsby point of reference in portraying Fitzgerald's inability to truly fit in. We discussed this in my Gatsby tours at Coe Hall and how someone with an expansive estate on Long Island surely would have had horses. Gatsby's ignorance of that fact leaves his vulnerable to the snub he receives from Tom's group as they disappear, expecting Nick to deliver their regrets. Gatsby's rejection is palpable.

vivastory I need to reread Gatsby. It's never really been a fave, but the memories I have of reading it are priceless. Thoughts on the prequel? 4y
IamIamIam @vivastory I legit had no idea about Nick's story! 😂 I'll probably take that out of the library first. I live on Long Island, used to ride the Long Island Railroad pretty frequently and drove past Flushing Meadows to get to Queens, so Gatsby is ingrained in me! Lol, plus I volunteered at a Gold Coast mansion and had a perspective on how the Buchanans lived. Maybe try audio? I had great memories of reading it in school too!!! Lol 4y

The insight and pleasure gained from the introduction alone makes this a gem for one who ranks The Great Gatsby a favorite. I highly recommend this book to all who inspire these words (from my 9 year old daughters): “ Only an extreme lover of books, like mom, would find a book all about another book to read.”

Picked this up at The Dollar Tree for my swap partner, but upon closer inspection I was mistaken and it is not on their TBR.
I already own a copy so this one is up for grabs. This one is a hardcover, but if you would prefer a paperback I can do that my copy is pb and new unread.
Just leave a comment to claim it.

Missusb I would love it for my school library as we study Gatsby. But I live in Australia 🇦🇺 so I suspect that would rule me out. Is it good? 6y

Obsessed with The Great Gatsby or the Fitzgeralds? (I am a little) Then this book is for you. I enjoyed most of this book. Although very well researched, some of the authors claims of "could be" were a bit too biased. But the "could be's" will have to stay that way and we will always be left wondering about some of the deeper meanings of Fitzgerald's greatest book.
(My opinion ?)

“And, because I still haven‘t learned enough, because I want to look harder, read smarter, I let a year or so go by and, inevitably, pick up Gatsby again.”

5⭐️ Corrigan expounds on my favorite novel. She approaches it from numerous angles with an intellectual yet fan girl love. I loved this book for pointing out themes I missed, history into Gatsby‘s creation and salvaging, and ultimately its worth of reading. Not dry & completely entertaining.

Notafraidofwords I have read the great Gatsby six times. I‘m convinced it‘s a perfect novel. 7y
mhillis I really enjoyed reading this book too! 7y
Susannah I loved this book! I thought the way she weaved together the novel, Fitzgerald, and Gatsby‘s impact on (popular) culture was terrific. I also was thrilled that she talked about “Gatz,” the seven-hour stage adaptation of the novel. I saw it in Los Angeles many years ago and thought it was phenomenal. 7y
See All 8 Comments
Jess_Read_This @Notafraidofwords Yes!!! I feel exactly the same way! Especially on this reread. I‘ve been marveling at the form and development of the plot the entire time reading. 7y
Jess_Read_This @mhillis I couldn‘t put it down! I read it in two days and my head was swirling with all the information. 7y
Jess_Read_This @Susannah I loved it for the same reasons! She had me riveted. How neat you saw “Gatz”! What an experience. It sounds like it completely heightens the novel after seeing it. I‘m in awe at the actor‘s ability of memorization of the entire novel! 7y
Jess_Read_This @mhillis Ohh! Thank you for the recommendation. I have an embarrassing confession. I haven‘t read Camus yet and have been meaning too. Every post I‘ve seen about Camus has been so positive and I keep meaning to read The Stranger. This is the nudge I need most definitely to get on that. 7y

We‘re halfway through the #NetGalleyTBRAttack readathon and I think we‘re making some pretty nice progress. Personally, I‘ve been mostly reading my easier books from #NetGalley. A lot of children‘s books, graphic novels, cookbooks, and photography books. Either way, I‘m happy to say that since Monday I have #readandreviewed 22 books already!!! I‘ve also gone up 4% for my feedback status, but also downloaded 8 more books 🙈 #Readingstats

Until I read So We Read On, I didn't know there were naked ladies swimming in these eyes of the well-known cover of The Great Gatsby. Or that this cover was designed by Francis Cugat (older brother of bandleader Xavier), for a fee of $100 and no royalties. He never did a book cover again, and according to Corrigan, probably because it was too much work for too little money. #eyesoncover #eyesoncovers

I highly recommend this! Based on how many quotes I shared of So We Read On, it's no surprise I enjoyed this book. Not strictly a bio but a focus on the history and meaning of The Great Gatsby. Eager to re-read The Great Gatsby! And now I'm wondering what happened to The Beautiful and the Damned 🤔. I know I had to buy a new Gatsby some time back, couldn't find the one I had.

JazzFeathers That would be interesting. I read Gatsby a few years ago. I enjoyed it... and it was pretty obviously it has more to say than the mere story may recount. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @JazzFeathers yes. The author points out a lot of symbolism, I'll definitely read more closely next time. I remember nothing about what was discussed in HS (a long time ago anyway)! Read it twice since then. 8y

With a friend like this, who needs enemies 😩? It's really hard for me to like Hemingway right now (the author also has cited other examples of when Hemingway has put down Fitzgerald). And Hemingway was going to be my next letter for #LitsyAtoZ 😨

saresmoore I had a similar reaction to learning about Hemingway's scoundrel nature, but @LauraBeth (and several other wonderful Littens) reminded me that everybody has their issues and Hemingway is still worth reading! What were you planning to read of his? 8y

ValerieAndBooks @saresmoore @LauraBeth I knew Hemingway was far from perfect 😓; I was planning on either Green Hills of Africa or Across the River and Into the Trees, both in my TBR forever. Or maybe I should read the bio I have by his friend whose last name is also H? 🤔 (edited) 8y

DivineDiana I am not a fan of Hemingway, the man. 8y

ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana what do you think of Hemingway, the writer? 8y
Jess_Read_This @ValerieAndBooks aaaand I just bought myself a copy of it from Amazon. I figured since it's out of print I should at least own a copy. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Jess_Read_This Corrigan mentioned him and his extensive collection *after* I placed the order, so now I'm left wondering if he's going to be heavily Team Fitzgerald, as Corrigan is. Maybe your book will be the opposite, as the names are reversed in the title 😊. 8y
tpixie @ValerieAndBooks it sounds like Hemingway was a very complicated person. And they're so much depression and his family too. 8y

It's heartwarming to see amidst Fitzgerald's critics, that he had some genuine Gatsby fans after it was released -- Gertrude Stein (who somehow sounds like a grandma here 😊) and T.S. Eliot. Hemingway, on the other hand 😡 (I'll post about that next).

tpixie More inter- author info: I read somewhere that TS Elliott and Esp JR Tolkien didn't like Walt Disney, his Snow White movie, or his dwarves ( maybe b/c dwarves weren't like the ones in Middle-Earth! 8y
tpixie This is so cool 😎 8y
ValerieAndBooks @tpixie interesting! And it seems like authors back then interacted more with each other (for better or worse) -- nowadays do they even do that, except maybe at bookish events? I don't think today's authors would even have strong public opinions on movies, either. 8y

"Arguing with Zelda devotees about Scott's responsibility for her ruin, however, is like arguing with Rush Limbaugh about Obamacare". Both quotes on same page. Corrigan is very much Team Scott -- after all, Corrigan penned this book about The Great Gatsby and how it got to be what it is. I think Zelda's mental illness doomed her; it doesn't seem like any other husband could have prevented her sad downwards spiral. I feel sorry for both of them ?

I recently moved to CT for a reporting job and found out that Maxwell Perkins, editor to Fitzgerald and Hemingway, lived in one of the towns I cover. I was in the area on assignment today and couldn't resist popping over to his old house. It's privately owned now, so no chance at going in, but oh to have been a fly on the wall there back in the day...

BookishFeminist So cool! I used to live down the street from Fitzgerald's home in St. Paul and would always envy the people currently living in it. This is a beautiful house! 8y
ValerieAndBooks Ok so I was curious where in CT this is (my daughter just started college in CT) and this link shows you the interior! So many bookshelves! 😍 apparently it is (or was) for sale for almost $3 million!http://www.sothebysrealty.com/eng/sales/detail/180-l-742-xyjrhj/landmark-home-of-maxwell-e-perkins-new-canaan-ct-06840 8y
Erinelizabethkayata @BookishFeminist they do tours sometimes, so I'll have to keep an eye out! I wish there was a Fitzgerald house like there is for Dickinson, but this is as close as I'll get! And @ValerieAndBooks it's in New Canaan in southern CT! And I don't doubt it-very nice and pricey area! 8y

I never knew someone could love Gatsby this much and I own four copies of it. Nonetheless, an educational if not glowing look at Fitzgerald and the book that made me want to try and write creatively.

Minor allergic reactions are no fun! Enjoying some sleepy time tea until the allergy medicine kicks in with my main man, Gatsby. My obsession is starting to get embarrassing 🙈

I love Gatsby, so, I think I was always going to love this. The author's enthusiasm was infectious.

Though it bogs down a little in several places (Corrigan's enthusiasm for her subject is so great that she waxes almost too poetic at times), this is a pretty good history of one of the Great American novels, and how it almost wasn't.
