Prep: A Novel | Curtis Sittenfeld
Curtis Sittenfeld's debut novel, Prep, is an insightful, achingly funny coming-of-age story as well as a brilliant dissection of class, race, and gender in a hothouse of adolescent angst and ambition.Lee Fiora is an intelligent, observant fourteen-year-old when her father drops her off in front of her dorm at the prestigious Ault School in Massachusetts. She leaves her animated, affectionate family in South Bend, Indiana, at least in part because of the boarding school's glossy brochure, in which boys in sweaters chat in front of old brick buildings, girls in kilts hold lacrosse sticks on pristinely mown athletic fields, and everyone sings hymns in chapel. As Lee soon learns, Ault is a cloistered world of jaded, attractive teenagers who spend summers on Nantucket and speak in their own clever shorthand. Both intimidated and fascinated by her classmates, Lee becomes a shrewd observer ofand, ultimately, a participant intheir rituals and mores. As a scholarship student, she constantly feels like an outsider and is both drawn to and repelled by other loners. By the time she's a senior, Lee has created a hard-won place for herself at Ault. But when her behavior takes a self-destructive and highly public turn, her carefully crafted identity within the community is shattered.Ultimately, Lee's experiencescomplicated relationships with teachers; intense friendships with other girls; an all-consuming preoccupation with a classmate who is less than a boyfriend and more than a crush; conflicts with her parents, from whom Lee feels increasingly distant, coalesce into a singular portrait of the painful and thrilling adolescence universal to us all. From the Hardcover edition.

1. I think Arthur Less (from Less and Less Is Lost by Andrew Sean Greer) would be a great roommate--he goes off on long trips and comes back with entertaining stories. Plus we could practice German together. 🙂

Such a clever, quiet campus novel and perfect for autumn. What I loved about this was how it really really felt like being with someone as they grew up, across four whole years, and the narrative let the things that mattered to Lee matter to us. The prep school wasn‘t paradise and wasn‘t awful, failed maths tests caused genuine and massive angst, sex was so cringe I skipped past it. This made me feel 17 again in a very balanced well written way.

Ruthiella I loved this too. 14mo

After a slow start I couldn‘t put this down. Main character Lee is so self-absorbed and most of the time she‘s just plain awful, yet at the same time the entire awful awkwardness of those teenage years comes rushing back, it‘s so perfectly described here. I was constantly nodding or wincing at the author‘s understanding of Lee, and of being a teenager. “I always worried someone would notice me, and then when no one did, I felt lonely”. Loved it.

BarbaraBB Beautiful photo 🥰. I still need to read this one 14mo

I‘m 56, more than 30 years out of HS and yet Curtis Sittenfeld managed to bring me right back to those awkward, anxious, angsty, euphoric days. I viscerally experienced being 16, in love and questioning every moment, comment, reaction to everyone and everything. I so acutely understood the young protagonist, Lee as she navigates her New England prep school with a sense of trepidation and awe. #TBRbacklog

#12Booksin 2021

I picked this up years ago after liking American Wife by Sittenfeld and let it gather dust, as we readers often do. So glad I finally got around to it. I loved this up close and personal story of a fish out of water, middle class teen at an elite prep boarding school. The protagonist isn‘t likable always, but I found her real and believable. This book also made me very glad that my adolescence is far behind me.

LeahBergen I liked this one, too. 3y

Honestly, Lee‘s constant self-consciousness really annoyed the crap out of me. I put down and picked up this book so many times, I kind of wish I had bailed. Her character is as likable as limp lettuce.

The most interesting part of reading Curtis‘s latest and her debut in back-to-back months was seeing her evolution as a writer. Rodham just has a life and verve that are so missing in Prep. 2.5⭐️

Got my center square #bookspinbingo 🥳

It took me a long time to get through this, but the story eventually grew on me. The writing is not perfect. But the way she writes about the awkwardness of high school, esp if you tend to hover on the periphery like I did, I felt like I was thrown right back to 9th grade in a slight horrifying way, since I never want to relive those years!

One plot hole bothered me, I‘ll put in comments ⬇️

sisilia I read this a long time ago. I remember liking the overall story but something was off 6y
alisiakae One thing that really bothered me is how Lee did not lose her scholarship after she almost failed her junior year math. That seemed like a major plot hole! But I also have no clue how boarding school scholarships work. 6y

Sleepyscribbler @4thhouseontheleft I don't think that's a plot hole at all. As a former teacher and parent of a child on a scholarship award I don't believe the issue you identify would have had the outcome you suggest. For me the tension ratcheted up by the possibility of such an outcome was almost unbearable, and the actual outcome cleveradded an important layer to the characterisation. 5y

With the exception of American Wife, Sittenfeld is often accused of creating #unlikable characters. They aren't evil like Dolores Umbridge, but they tend to be women who can be whiny, passive-aggressive, petty, etc. I would even argue that Sittenfeld made Lizzie Bennet somewhat unlikable in her version of P&P. But these so-called unlikable characters are why I enjoy Sittenfeld's work so much.

Almost forgot today's #riotgrams #onewordtitle! Pulled one of my all time favorites from the shelf. I love a good boarding school novel and Sittenfeld's writing of the teenage experience is heartbreakingly accurate. Lee is not exactly a likeable character, but I could certainly identify with a great deal of her emotions. It would be an interesting read, now that I am a parent, thinking toward the future teenage girl in my home. Or maybe not...

Clearly in the minority but I found this book incredibly boring. Nothing happens. It's the mundane story of 4 years at a boarding school - just 4 ordinary years in the life of one girl who is crazy insecure. I couldn't relate to Lee at all, even thinking back to my own teenage years. Her incessant agonizing over what everyone thought of her drove me nuts, and I found her unlikeable. Kept waiting for the story to get some legs, but it never did. 😕

ReadingMeagan @Bookgirl I have read more reviews of it and that seems to be the consensus. Oh well. I will just move on to a better book 😃 8y

This book is on my tbr list. I picked it up at a used book sale when I couldn't resist the cover blurb. I thought of a bunch of books set in school but I don't have them anymore 😞#booktober #bookssetinschool

LeahBergen I really enjoyed this book ... but then I've always been slightly obsessed with boarding school stories. 😀 8y
Dragon Thanks @LeahBergen when I thought about it I realized I've read a lot of books set in boarding school. Especially English boarding schools 📚 8y

Pretty solid month for me considering it took almost a full week to get through A Storm of Swords! 😄

Loved finally getting to a stack of books I'd been meaning to read for a while, and had a hard time picking favorites 📚👌🏽🙌🏽

megt Awesome! 8y

Never have I ever related more to a character's adolesence! Lee's hilarious inner monologue while she deals with social anxiety, her overanalyzation of every choice she makes for fear of how she'll be perceived, and that constant feeling of being an outsider, is spot on. I wasn't ready to let Lee's world go. Finishing left me bereft, slightly nostalgic, and wishing there were a sequel so I could see what she's up to now.

Loved it!

Ok, so not to muddy Litsy with politics... but this instantly made me think of a certain orange presidential candidate 😂 ✋🏼

Kaylamburson I loved this book when I first read it in high school. I need to reread it soon. 8y
swishandflick I'm loving it! Had it on my shelf for a while and can't believe I'm just now getting around to reading it! @Kaylamburson 8y

Started this one on the subway this morning and have been antsy all day to get back to it. Giving me major Gossip Girl vibes (the TV show, not the book) and I love it!

Reviewsbylola This was my first Sittenfeld book and I loved it!! 8y

Read this on ebook so here's a pic of some lovely summery hydrangeas. I loved this so so much; it always surprises me when a book with minimal plot is as compelling as this book is but I couldn't put Prep down & I couldn't stop thinking about it & I haven't stopped thinking about it since. This is the 3rd book of Sittenfeld's I've read & it's definitely my favourite thus far - I can't believe it was her debut.

LeahBergen I really liked it, too. 8y

I think I just caught this one at the wrong point in my life. Just like I can't relate to Holden Caulfield, I didn't really "get" Lee. Still, I liked the format and writing.

I really liked the writing in this, the concept and the setting, but oh my goodness Lee drove me bonkers. I identify with some things about her, but I wanted to shake her for living in her head and overanalysing; being so passive and not stepping out of her comfort zone. Hence the so-so.

I didn't love this book. Maybe I'm too old but I didn't relate to any of the characters. It was well written but I felt it just went on for too long.
