I really liked the first book in the series, but the 2nd took me a long time to get through. I like the characters and everything, so it‘s a series I want to finish. But we‘ll see when I pick up the next book in the series.

I spread reading this book out across January. It was more slow paced than the first book. Not a lot of action but it had a lot of interesting characters and the writing continues to suck me into the story.

⭐️I don‘t feel I can even review this book. I really didn‘t like it. It took me a year to plow through. I found the MC‘s boring. Just pages and pages of information. I can see where a history buff would really like this installment. I am not a history buff. I like action, a moving plot, emotions. Anything. People LOVE this trilogy. Do I even bother with the 3rd?

DieAReader I slogged through this series last year & the third was the best imo. Not even gonna touch 13mo
LazyLibrary @DieAReader At this point, I‘ll probably read the 3rd, but I ain‘t excited for it lol 13mo

This is long and complicated. There are hundreds of characters, many of whom are very briefly in the story. So much of the travel seems unnecessary. There wasn‘t enough about the magic and way too much about the politics of the time. It just didn‘t work for me. Will I still read the final one? Yes. Will I ever re-read this? No.

DivineDiana Hundreds of characters! 😲 2y
Mrs_B @DivineDiana yes. It‘s really odd. Some are in the story for about 3 chapters at most. Some even less. I suspect some at the beginning were being set up for the final book but it‘s still odd. And some were quite clearly just an “aside” but there were plenty others who you expected to become an integral part of the story and then you just never heard from again. So weird. 2y
Mrs_B @DivineDiana the more I think about this the more it‘s annoying me. 😂 2y
DivineDiana I get it! 🤣 2y
Mrs_B @DivineDiana I have started the third one because I want to know what happens and after nearly 3 weeks of reading I feel I have to. But there are MORE RANDOM CHARACTERS. 2y

I thought this book was really clever. I loved the historical references (especially the School of Night. Lit nerd heaven!) and the juxtaposition of the story between 1590‘s Europe and the modern timeline. There are brand new characters and you meet some that were previously referenced. I wound up really loving a couple of characters that I didn‘t expect to like at all. I may have even liked this book more than the first one.

Scochrane26 I think this is my favorite of the 3, but I loved them all. And the tv show. 2y
Ericalambbrown @Scochrane26 I started the tv show when we picked up AMC+ this fall. Then I stopped to read the books when I liked the show so much. Now I just want Gallowglass to get his own book. 2y

I chose to read this as a real-time reading - the book opened on November 1st, and I have been following the real-time schedule (reading the chapter on the day it occurred) since then. A fun way to read, but there were very long stretches between chapters, and I quite honestly didn‘t quite remember everything!

Harkness has created a plausible world of creatures, and their interactions with historical figures from the 16th century..:⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle 🔼🔼🔼…are quite fascinating. Admittedly, there are parts of the narrative that dragged, making me wonder why certain scenes were drawn out. Diana would also irritate me at times. But, I liked reading this. I‘m looking forward to reading the next one on my own terms (not following a real-time schedule). 2y

Although I liked it a little bit less than the first part, I almost couldn't put away this book. There was just a bit too much blabber between Matthews friends. Matthew himself was also not always the nicest guy around. But Diana's part was obviously very nice to read. It must have been so cool to live in the 16th century for some time! I'm also quite jealous of her magic dragon and I adored Jack and Annie!

For me this is a typical case of book two in a trilogy syndrome. Pure filler, a lack of direction and an abundance of waffling.

There were parts in this that felt of value to the overall plot but on the whole this was a slog and all thats happening is your watching the author flex her historical knowledge in a drab fashion. This could have been magical, a previous century brought to life but it fell flat, sigh.

I liked the first in the series more, this one was definitely way more historical. I enjoyed all the literature references too, and having Kit Marlowe be a demon 😂

This follow up seemed to be losing touch with the story by throwing dozens of characters in, and having the main couple repeat the same relationship problems again and again. I hope the last book wraps everything up!

@TheAromaofBooks this was my book spin pick for December!

The history and time spent in Elizabethan England was quite fun. But Diana and Matthew seem to have lost ALL sense of urgency when they time walked to the past! I loved when a very unexpected character appeared and basically asked WTH they were doing dallying around so long 🤣. Although I have some books lined up for #NFNovembwr, I will be picking up The Book of Life next so I can finish the trilogy.
