here's my #FirstLineFridays thanks to @ShyBookOwl for this fun idea.
I'm looking forward to reading this, 😂 it will be a lot lighter than my other current, myths about Mesopotamia
I started two buddy reads today. The first chapters of both involve a mother dying after a long illness while being faithfully nursed by her daughter. It‘s a good thing I saw my mom yesterday and she was well… 😬

Ok so the first book up for our Hitchcock buddy read will be Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier. This is one of the only ones on the list where I haven‘t seen the movie yet and I‘m excited! It starts Nov 1st and it‘s pretty laid back, we will have six weeks to read it and just post a review when you‘re done and tag me. Use the tag #HitchToScreen and let me know if you have any questions! Anyone is welcome to join!

As I selected this from #mounttbr, Tori Amos' song with the same title got stuck in my head.

Absolutely perfect pure spooky gothic thriller I did guess the real villain quite early on perhaps from watching the 1939filmJamaica inn will be 1of my favourite picks of the year the atmospheric writing of the winter on the Moors just perfect , as other reviewers have said it would havehad more depth if the complicated romance had been more explored butstill it didn‘t takeaway fromthe violence and corruptionof the wreckers,I personally lovedit.
Can‘t believe for some reason this book had escaped me for years , treated myself to the special hardback edition and have been reading It by the log burner in our cottage by the sea in November ! Absolutely perfect , pure spooky gothic thriller I did guess the real villain quite early on perhaps from watching the 1939 film many years ago with my grandparents . Jamaica inn will be one of my favourite picks of the year the atmospheric writing of 👆
A girl can‘t live alone Mary , without she goes queer in the head or comes to evil 😆perfect winter ❄️ gothic read
Well it‘s set in November on the wild windy Cornish coast & Wer off to the coast next week for my birthday 🥳 weekend so another #bookspinbingo pick
This was a chilling read. Du Maurier weaves a masterful tale of suspense, drama and intrigue with a bit of romance for good measure. The back drop of the moors and granite tors make it so very atmospheric.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My first book by Du Maurier.
This is the story of young Mary Yellan , whose mother dies. Mary heads off to Jamaica Inn to live on the moors with her aunt and uncle. The moors are desolate and weather beaten. A thriller of pure tension, dark and violent. I loved it.

It‘s been a slow reading week. But I did read this book and it‘s a memorable one. 🖤

I‘ve started Jamaica Inn for IRL Bookclub… very atmospheric 🖤

Last book of 2022, I'll try to finish it before midnight to get to 162 read.
1. Anything that was set in a time period earlier than what the author is living in.
2. Anything by Daphne do Maurier
#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView
1. To me, it‘s historical fiction if the bulk of the action takes place at least fifty years before the book was written. In any case, I prefer historical fiction that takes place before I was born.
2. I don‘t remember how much of the tagged book takes place in autumn, but it definitely has a dark and spooky vibe to it.
#two4tuesday
I didn‘t like the narrator of this audiobook, and I didn‘t like how weak Aunt Patience is.
#AlphabetGame #letterJ
The tagged book shares the top spot with Just Mercy. I saw someone already posted about the latter, so I‘ll go with Daphne du Maurier. Loved this classic gothic read.
Tagging @BiblioLitten if you wish to play.
????? Another classic in the bag. There is nothing I love more than a good old fashioned gothic tale. Jamaica Inn gives you all of those things. It felt very much like a mixture of Brontë and Collins. The mystery of Collins Lady in White and Bronte‘s Jane Eyre (a personal favorite). The mysterious, dark inn, the moors, the heather the crashing sea all things I love.
Du Maurier is one of my favourite authors. I love her atmospheric dark writing. This was a good one and can‘t wait for the next!
Thanks to these Litsy folks for today‘s prompt:

Today‘s Prompt: REMOTE INN
The book was a perfect Du Maurier book. The entire book was suspenseful, tense, and had a sinister tone.
If you don't know Du Maurier's writing, you will want to.
Enjoy and read JAMAICA INN when you can. 5/5

I am likely going to cheat every day for #12booksof2021 #1stbookof2021 #January
I‘m not sure I‘ll choose a graphic novel every time but count it likely a book and a graphic novel. I‘ve read over 500 books so it‘s only fair right?
I loved this classic book so much, I need to add her more famous one to my 2022 TBR.
Witch Hat started me on a journey I love in manga.
@Andrew65
For a long time I've always wanted to read something by Du Maurier, and I finally did! The atmosphere in this book is unbelievable. It almost felt like I was standing on the shores myself, while the fog is closing in more and more... The same with the characters and their relationships. Great writing. Only sometimes the plot drags a little, it would've been better to just shorten the story a tiny bit.
@TheAromaofBooks #BookSpinBingo
A strongly gothic mystery with fantastic atmospheric vibes. Set on the moors, which was PERFECT, everything is very gray & murky, even the circumstances of the happenings at Jamaica Inn. I enjoyed du Maurier's clever writing & the way she really brings her characters to life. Mary is a strong female protagonist with Austen heroine vibes. A well-written plot with high suspense. I truly wasn't sure what to expect.
I really enjoyed this book. It had the right kind of creepiness, action and even a little romance. I'm not surprised that Hitchcock made a movie of it. #Scarathlon #TeamHendrix @StayCurious
Found this couple weeks ago from a flee market. I've waited to read this for years. 😍
This was a good in-between type of read for me. The storyline isn‘t overly riveting and the characters felt almost cliche but it is very atmospheric and suspenseful at times. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I‘m working my way through books I own and reserving newer books that I want to read at the library. It‘s really working for me 😀 (I think I‘ve got used to not buying books through all the lockdowns the past few times I‘ve been in a bookshop I‘ve came away empty handed 🤭). I chose this from my shelves the other night and enjoying the suspense of it!
2021 re-read.
Re-reading this book again, it has lost none of the author's power of imagery. I could hear the waves crashing on the rocks, feel the freezing driving rain, and almost see the mist over the moors. In fact after this reading, I have revised my rating up to 5 stars. Dark, dramatic, and compelling. 5🌟
This was on my TBR for years! It‘s a gloomy, gothic tale of smuggling (and worse) off the coast of Cornwall in 1820. Written by Du Maurier several years before ‘Rebecca‘, I thought the suspense here was just as compelling but this one was more horror story than love story.
Read in March for #AuthorAMonth... I probably shouldn‘t compare du Maurier‘s other work to her brilliant Rebecca, but it‘s hard not to. 🤷🏻♀️
While not as perfect, Jamaica Inn is a moody, dark, mysterious and, at times, very exciting suspense thriller, and even though I figured it out a bit early, it was a pleasure to listen to. Now I need to watch the adaption!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Daphne du Maurier played me like a violin! Even when I knew what was coming, I didn‘t know what was coming! #authoramonth
In one of those bookish coincidences, the MC in one of the other books I have going right now ducked into a movie theater to get out of the rain. The movie she watched? Rebecca!
FEATURING: JAMAICA INN by Daphne Du Maurier
Mary complied with her dying mother's wishes that she move in with her Aunt Patience.
Little did Mary's mother know what that wish held for Mary.
The book was a perfect Du Maurier book.
The entire book was suspenseful, tense, and had a sinister tone.
Have YOU read this book?

So, I'm officially a Daphne du Maurier fan! This wasn't as good as Rebecca, but compelling. Going to try to fit in one more before March is over for #Authoramonth! @Soubhiville

#TBRPile 📚 After the death of her mother, Mary Yellan crosses the windswept Cornish moors to Jamaica Inn, the home of her Aunt Patience. There she finds Patience a changed woman, downtrodden by her domineering, vicious husband Joss. The inn is a front for a lawless gang of criminals, and Mary is unwillingly dragged into their dangerous world of smuggling and murder. Before long she will be forced to cross her own moral line to save herself...
