The Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz: The First Five Novels | L. Frank Baum
285 posts | 239 read | 4 reading | 59 to read
Oz, the Great Wizard! The very name of L. Frank Baum's magical character conjures a world where diminutive munchkins live and work, wicked witches run riot, and the mighty Oz himself rules over an Emerald City reached by a yellow brick road. The Wizard of Oz: The First Five Novels is your passport to this marvelous realm and wonders that have enchanted readers young and old for more than a century. Lavishly illustrated by W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill, this volume includes The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz and The Road to Oz.

I didn‘t really like this book when I read it as a teenager, but I actually quite enjoyed it this time around. I still like the movie better, though.

#JumpStart2021 #BookThatStartedYourReadingObsession I was absolutely obsessed with this series when I was 7yrs old! I read & reread every book my local library had. It seemed at times I was bringing them back just to reborrow them. My favourites were Ozma Of Oz & TikTok Of Oz. The world was so vivid in my mind, I could see the queen that had a different head for every day & the Wheelers just terrified me. Highly recommend for kids of all ages🙌

EdnaC I always loved Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz. It was a later one. Not wrote by Baum but I loved it. 3y

Woo hoo! I finished one of my #bookspin books for this month!

This is a reread for me. While it is a pick, I'm always surprised by how simple the writing seems and I wonder why this book became so very popular. That's not a criticism, but compared to some fantastical children's lit, this feels flat to me.

TheNeverendingTBR Love the Ballantine books! 💫 4y
Sace @TheNeverendingTBR they feel like the only "right" editions to me ? 4y
rubyslippersreads This is one of those rare cases where I prefer the movie to the book. 😊👠🌈 4y

Sace @rubyslippersreads I do love the movie. It truly is magic. 4y
silentrequiem I had read somewhere this wasn't supposed to be a kid's book but a political allegory. Once Baum got letters from children about he, he realized he had written a kids book and continued the series. The rest of the books are much more lively and plot-filled. 4y
Sace @silentrequiem I can see that too. There are some episodes that struck me as more allegorical. I've got the rest of the books on my TBR as well 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Sace Me too, the covers are always amazing; I really like Signet books too! 💫 4y

So I‘m in a play that a friend of mine wrote; it‘s called Oz.Org and will be part of the upcoming Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Oz.org is the a new retelling of The Wizard of Oz but with a digital age spin! This is my set-up: my laptop, a ring light, and some green paper! It looks simple, but creating theatre over Zoom is NOT easy. 🎭🌈🌺🐕‍🦺👠💻

For this card I thought of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz who was so focused on finding an external solution to the problem that she never realized she had the means to solve it already.

In the author‘s note to my edition, Baum insists that his children‘s story is unlike those of Andersen and Grimm, free of “heartaches and nightmares.” This comment amused me as getting picked up by a cyclone wouldn‘t be full of “wonderment” for me. Also reminded me of the many Ozs I‘ve met in my life, a good reminder in itself of the value of independence and independent thinking.

#7Days7Books Day 6 (3 weeks after I posted day 5 🙄)

This will forever be the book that drove home the points that the movie is almost always different and that the book is almost always better.

(Very young me saw the movie first then read the book. The only thing the movie improved was the ruby slippers over silver.)

I did some #audio baking today!
When I went out to the store today, there was only two loaves of bread in the entire place. So instead of taking bread another person may have needed, I decided to make my own. I live in a small town, and as soon as shelves are stocked, people hoard the food. I hope my small gesture helped someone in need.

Good. I listened to the audiobook version of this which was narrated by Anne Hathaway and it was brought to life by this wonderful actress, as she did all the voices of the characters which made it all the more wonderful. Enjoyed seeing the differences between the much loved film and the book which as usual is many but it is always good to get back to the original material.

It recently occurred to me that I had never read this book. (I know.) So, I rectified that! It was a fun listen, though I‘m a little surprised at the amount of violence and talk of killing others in a children‘s book. I‘m not sure how this would be received in a new book nowadays.

vivastory I only read it this year, too. I've heard the series gets stranger & stranger 4y
Hooked_on_books @vivastory Huh. That almost makes me want to continue. It‘s funny with the violence thing—older Disney movies are way more violent. I think we tolerated a lot more targeted at kids in the past than we do now. 4y
