Finally reading this one (well listening 🎧). Been on my #tbr for eons.
3✨I finished this earlier this week, but the end of the school year always has me trying to balance life and work in a very unbalanced way. Kit is our main character who is struggling with how different it is in Connecticut than it was with her grandfather. She meets a nice woman who the town labels as a witch. He world is changed when accusations start flying. Not bad, but it‘s hard to engage very much at this time of year.
I found this in a little free library today , I believe it was meant for me to find it . Let‘s read ❤️
I read this book years ago when I was a little girl. I even remember the summer I went to the library to check it out. I chose to read this instead of going swimming. I‘m all about the water so if I‘m not in a pool or ocean I must be swept up with the story. It still all these years later spoke to me and I enjoyed every page. #AwardWinningReads
Cute read that gives insight into the historical period. Relatable and believable characters. I wish I would have read this when I was younger.
I wish I had read this sooner. It's an excellent story and I can see why it's an award winner. #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter #PromptMaze D5 #Spookoween #31by31 #BodyCountBingo #AutumnAToZ #Witchathon #20in4 @Clwojick @TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView @Catsandbooks @TheSpineView @PuddleJumper @Texreader @mdm139 @Andrew65
Finished my 1st book for October‘s #TrappedOnAnIsland. @Allylu did a great job picking books for me! I really enjoyed The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Set in Connecticut in 1687, it gave a realistic-feeling portrayal of life at that time, and the the way innocent people could be caught up in witch hunt fever. 4 stars.

What a wonderful story! It really captures both the quintessential New England spirit that still survives today and the spirit of the strong young heroine which was so rare at the time this was written. #Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious #Spookoween2022 @TheSpineView #31by31 @Catsandbooks #PointsAThon @dieareader @GHABI4ROSES #witchathon @mdm139
I don‘t even know how many Halloweens ago I added this to my TBR, but I finally borrowed it from Libby! Now it‘s just a question of getting to it this month. #witch #Scarathlon2022 #ScarathlonDailyPrompt #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious
I have heard more than one person say this is on a list of their most favorite books. I did not like it enough to call it a favorite, but I did enjoy it enough to give it five stars. #scarathlon
#scarathlondailyprompts #black @StayCurious #teammonstermash I am hoping to read this too for #witchathon

I can't believe I've never read this classic. I'm so glad I finally got around to it. Newberry Medal winner 1959. It's The Crucible for young adults, complete with a happy ending.

Last night I rediscovered a whole stack of books with some fun, "old school" cover art that I totally forgot I even had. This one is dated as 1987 and I just love her outfit? Anyone wanna join in and post some #throwbackthursdays?
I listened to the audio, and mostly I liked it, but it was hard to keep focus, unfortunately. I liked it enough that I often rewound to listen again to try to catch what I‘d missed, but I still missed more than I would have liked.

1. A reread since I was young as it is a locally based story: The Witch of Blackbird Pond (set in Wethersfield CT). I also like to read books set in Autumn.
2. We get mostly young trick or treaters- love to see their costumes & the delight on their faces!!!
I LOVED this book!!! Kit sails from her home in Barbados to her Puritan family in colonial Connecticut. She has trouble acclimating to their strict lives and finds a friend in the local witch, a Quaker who was tortured for her religion. Find out if Kit has made destructive choices or if the goodness of people can beat ignorance. 😁
It never occurred to me that the Quakers were considered troublemakers in the colonies! Lol, I'm not sure I know much about the Quakers, but I do know they had a rich pre-revolutionary presence on Long Island. 🤔
Finished and enjoyed the tagged book for more #TeamTheme points! #Bingo #scarathlon2021 #TeamHendrix @StayCurious #spookoween @TheSpineView

#NewberyEpicChallenge reads for October!
📘 The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
📙 Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George
Enjoy!
Even though I'm in the middle of a dozen other books right now, a new month and new readathons mean starting a new book, right? Tagged is my first read for #spookoween! #scarathlon #teamhendrix

I read this book when I was 12 years old, and I still remember it. This is considered to be a children‘s/middle grade novel, but adults can enjoy it too. This is considered to be a classic for a reason. This tells the story of Kit, an outcast girl in Puritan Connecticut who befriends an outcast old woman who is suspected of being a witch. The hatred and violence that masquerade as Christianity in this novel is astounding. The more things change…..
The Witch of Blackbird Pond was my next Middle Grade book. It was published in the 50‘s but I don‘t think it has lost anything with age. It‘s a story of a New England town whose people were quick to call women who were educated, of a different faith and could swim witches! It‘s also about Kit and her life there. Quite good. #100YEARS100BOOKS #BookSpinBingo #13 (Another bingo!) #BFC21 #MGMarch #MarvellousMarch
I loved the rebellious characters so much that I was worried I couldn‘t handle an ending that wasn‘t perfect. Unnecessary, the story did not disappoint.
I genuinely enjoyed this peek into the past. Kit‘s dropped right in the middle of Puritan New England and is as much an outsider to the way of life as the reader. Kit is everything I like in a protagonist: she‘s rebellious, good-hearted, and loyal. Everything comes together in the end and, you know what, sometimes that‘s exactly what should happen in a story. 💙
Kit, 16 y/o girl from Barbados raised in 1687 by her grandfather in very unconventional way. She will moved with her unknown aunt in Connecticut & will face difficulties to adapt to this family puritanical lifestyle. A lovely, cute story about friends, family, how to maintain your integrity. Don‘t miss this time where women were seen inferior and you could be accused of witchcraft for almost anything 3.8⭐️ #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaOfBooks 👇
I tried this a few years ago and couldn't get into it. Maybe distance from New England was all I needed to appreciate it because this time around I found it a delight. It captures well so many of the wonderful and not-wonderful things about New England even today. I really like this kind of YA.
Another for #bookspinbingo. Not giving up yet!
@TheAromaofBooks
"She had forgotten that summer would come again, that the green would spread over the frozen fields, that the earth would be turned up to the sun and the seed sown, and that the meadows would renew themselves. Was this what strengthened these New Englanders to endure the winter, the knowledge that summer's return would be all the richer for waiting?"
I never really understood the miracle of spring until I lived in New England.
A few years ago, my children and I did a class series on wool from sheep to fabric in which we were taught that you dye the wool after you spin it. So when Kit and Mercy sat carding blue-dyed wool in the tagged book, I thought Speare had gotten it wrong. Upon further investigation, wool can, in fact, be dyed before carding. @AmyG when you get my #litsylove , you can disregard the part of the letter where I complain about wool. :-)
Kale frittata, berry-banana smoothie, and Elizabeth George Speare.
This is my mom‘s copy of one of my childhood favorites (and hers). I think we probably love it because we relate to Kit so much. She is strong, independent, stubborn, and swims against the current. All characteristics we share, especially the stubborn part 🤣.
If you haven‘t had a chance to read this yet do so ASAP!! It‘s not one to be missed 💚
My childhood copy of this #Witchy book. I should really read it again soon!
#ScreamathonPhotoChallenge
Audio #readalong with my youngest as he reads this for school. I love it! I‘ve read it with my kids every single time one of them has used it for school. We‘ve used it for history and for literature, and now we‘re using it to practice writing papers. #homeschool
Also: I wasn‘t allowed to read this book when I was young!! Because of “witch” in the title. 👀 It‘s so good and I wish I hadn‘t missed out on it when I was a young person.
“Kit kept her word to Mr. Kimberley and threw herself so diligently into the school work that the children were bewildered. There were no more stories, no games, even no small unorthodox #poems. After school hours there were the gardens to weed, and the first crop of flax to harvest in the hilly slopes above the town.” #QuotsyApr19

Great story that tells about the times of the witch trials. Kit is accused of being a witch due to her friendship. Also a great story about finding yourself and friendship
2008, historical fiction. Story of an orphaned girl named kit Tyler. She has a new home in the Connecticut colony, but was from the Caribbean islands. She feels lonely and not in place. Only place she feels free is in the meadows where she meets and old Quaker who is known as a witch
“I‘m not going to disappoint her Kit. When I take you on board the Witch it‘s going to be for keeps.”
I think students will really enjoy this book because many of them may feel like outcasts too.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond is a story about a young girl who moves to America from the Caribbean. She feels like an outcast and makes friends with a sailor and the woman known as the town witch.
“Only three shabbily dresses women lingered near her, and because she could not contain her eagerness, kit smiled and would have spoken, but she was abruptly repulsed by there sharply curious eyes”
I would definitely have this book available to my children, but mostly for the older kids. It seems like a very interesting novel.
The witch of Blackbird pond by Elizabeth George Speare is a historical fiction novel that was published in 1959. This story is about a 16 year old, Kit Tyler, who had traveled alone to for to her uncle and aunts house in Connecticut. On her ship over Kit saved a young girls doll that had fell into the water. Her cousin is disabled and she has a hard time connecting with them. She grows a strong relationship with Nat who becomes her best friend.
Sweet middle grade classic.
