Where the Red Fern Grows
Where the Red Fern Grows | Wilson Rawls
120 posts | 422 read | 6 reading | 49 to read
A loving threesome, they ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Old Dan had the brawn. Little Ann had the brains, and Billy had the will to make them into the finest hunting team in the valley. Glory and victory were coming to them, but sadness waited too. Where the Red Fern Grows is an exciting tale of love and adventure you'll never forget.

I could just hear Little Ann and Old Dan howling in the book.

Of course, I did my own howling at the end.

@Ozma.Of.Oz
My mom read to me, but the book I remember being read to in 4th grade was Where the Red Fern Grows. Ms. Littrell, our teacher, hadn't read it beforehand, so when she got to the (ahem) emotional part, she had to leave the room because she was crying so hard. She didn't come back for a while. We all sat there sniffling.

Forward 20 years, and I did the EXACT SAME THING except it was 7th graders and the book was The Red Pony. 🤦‍♀️

How did I forget to add this to my current reading list?!

This is THE book for me...the one that got me emotionally invested in reading. I loved reading before, but not like this. I typically don‘t reread books, so this was the first time revisiting it since my childhood. My son and I cried for a good 45 minutes after the last few chapters. He had all the feels 😍 Kinda feel a teeny bad for putting him through that pain.

TheNeverendingTBR Such a cute doggo! 😍 4y
Reggie My third grade teacher always read for half an hour after lunch. And I remember when she read parts of last half of Bridge to Terabethia. That was a sad afternoon for us all. I think about it now and can‘t believe she would read that to us. 4y
SoapboxEdits @TheNeverendingTBR Thank you! He‘s Curly the Courageous, lol 4y
SoapboxEdits @Reggie I can‘t remember what grade I was read that to, but it was the same! Such as sad book, the movie does NOT do it justice. As an adult I‘m kind of surprised, too, but I couldn‘t imagine not having those books in my life as a child. They shaped me and taught me so much in so many different ways. That‘s why I‘m reading them to my son. 4y

Starting this Junior Fiction today before I read it with my girls (8 & 12yrs), just checking it through first as I've had some warnings from other readers but I don't want to read too many summaries at I might find out too much of the story.
Lol, my girls keep asking how it's going! I've only just started. So far, so good.

Hooked_on_books I read this at age 11. I bawled at the end. 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Hooked_on_books Yes, I've heard. I'm sure I will find out why soon enough 😉 4y
Graywacke I didn‘t read many books as a kid, but i read and adored this around maybe age 12 (??) 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Graywacke Cool! I'd never heard of it until recently. Looking forward to it, wishing I was 12 again 😊 4y
mandarchy My second grade teacher read it to our class. I don't think I listened very well, but I remember kids walking around crying. I didn't seem to care. Today if I read a book with a dog in it I'll just cry if something good happens. My students know it too, they try to get me to read dog books to them. 4y

This was the first book to ever make me cry. I couldn't put it down while I was reading it (I finished it way ahead of when we were supposed to in our class - and so did most of my classmates) I just loved it. I'll never forget the experience of reading it for the first time.

This was assigned reading in 4th grade and I remember my mom walking past my room as I finished it, tears streaming down my face.
