The Inimitable Jeeves | P. G. Wodehouse
77 posts | 71 read | 36 to read
To dive into a Wodehouse novel is to swim in some of the most elegantly turned phrases in the English language.Ben Schott Follow the adventures of Bertie Wooster and his gentlemans gentleman, Jeeves, in this stunning new edition of one of the greatest comic short story collections in the English language. This classic collection of linked stories feature some of the funniest episodes in the life of Bertie Wooster, gentleman, and Jeeves, his gentlemans gentlemanin which Bertie's terrifying Aunt Agatha stalks the pages, seeking whom she may devour, while Berties friend Bingo Little falls in love with seven different girls in succession (he marries the last, bestselling romantic novelist Rosie M. Banks). And Bertie, with Jeevess help, just evades the clutches of the terrifying Honoria Glossop. At its heart is one of Wodehouses most delicious stories and a comic masterpiece, "The Great Sermon Handicap."

Loved Sabriel on audio. Tim Curry narrating!

#weeklyforecast
The Good Soldier is on #serialreader so I know I'll finish it (can't say I'm enjoying, but yay for another #1001books down)
I'm loving Fault Lines so far, so I'm sure I'll finish it, then probably go back to Wild Seed, which I'm also enjoying
For audio, I'll finish Jeeves and start The Phoenix Crown - highly anticipated so 🤞 it lives up to my hopes

emz711 Wait. Sabriel narrated by Tim Curry? Like the fantasy book? 10mo
llwheeler @emz711 yep! He was great, and I'm glad I finally got around to reading (listening to) it! 10mo

julesG @Cupcake12 I spoke too soon. My daughter managed to spill a good cup of dark ramen noodle soup over the sofa, carpet and cushions. Upon my remark that she could at least have added some ketchup her teenage brain short circuited. Ah well. Spring cleaning a bit early this year. Yeah! 😐 11mo
Cupcake12 Oh no! Hope it comes out x 11mo
julesG @Cupcake12 Most of it has been attacked already. I now have to wait for the carpet shampoo stuff to dry then I can hoover it off and we're done. Cushions are in the wash right now. We have a well-stocked cleaning cupboard thanks to the #ShadowCat's gluten intolerance (although he hasn't given us a hard time in a long while). The only downside, I was looking forward to some reading time. But Stephen Fry kept me company on audio 11mo

I forgot to take a picture of the book before I sent it, but I thought this cover was appropriate with all of Jeeves and Bertie‘s sartorial differences in this one!

So much fun! And as usual poor Bertie lands in the soup multiple times due to the machinations of his nearest and dearest!

4-7 Jul 2022 (audiobook)
I do not expect anyone could read Jeeves quite like Stephen Fry. The language and humour shines through Fry‘s brilliant narration.

CarolynM Have you ever seen the Jeeves and Wooster TV series with Stephen Fry as Jeeves and Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster? So good. 2y
mjtwo @CarolynM I have been trying to find it but does not seem to be available to stream in Australia. I think I may have to purchase the DVDs. It does sound worth doing. (edited) 2y
CarolynM They‘re on YouTube. Not sure if it‘s all episodes, but better than nothing🙂. Since I have both the video tapes (from before DVDs) and the DVDs (from before streaming services) I definitely think they‘re worth buying😆 (edited) 2y

#12Booksin2021

This is really a stand in for the whole series. I love books that can make me laugh and the 4 Wodehouse novels read I‘ve read did exactly that multiple times. This is really just strung together short stories, many featuring Bertie‘s pal Bingo, who is just as imbecilic as he and falls in love with any girl at the drop of a hat. Bertie gets roped in and and Jeeves bails them out.

Many thanks to @Andrew65 for this fun challenge. 🙏

I listened to the 2nd Jeeves on audiobook in #September and it was just the light, clever listen I was looking for. I highly recommend audio for these: I read the first in print and didn‘t find it nearly as enjoyable as actually hearing the quick British wit.

#doublespin a Jeeves ‘novel‘?? But more like a series of loosely connected short stories. Enjoyed it, just felt a bit weird in the way it was structured…

TheAromaofBooks I could be wrong, but I think this is one of the earlier Jeeves books - Wodehouse wrote a lot of short stories about the pair before his first novel with them as the stars. 3y
bekakins @TheAromaofBooks yes I think you‘re right… I don‘t know if I had misinformation or something as I had it billed as ‘the first full-length Jeeves novel‘, and it definitely didn‘t hang together like a novel. Once I accepted it as a series of short stories I enjoyed it a lot more!! 3y

Listened to this Jeeves and Wooster while making good progress on my cross stitch. This was my second Jeeves and I definitely liked it better than the first in the series, which I read a few years ago. I think a lot of it had to do with hearing all the British dry wit instead of simply reading it. Recommend for a light, funny listen! #audiostitching

I really enjoyed it.
It's fun and light and still there's something in it that never makes it silly.

The way Bertie lives his life, among clubs, family and friends' crises and improbable bets might have easily turn into something unbearable boring in less skillful hands. Wodehouse manages to give it heart.
And l suppose there's something in the way working Jeeves always is a step ahead of all these upper-crust gents and ladies.

Brilliant.

Truly nothing makes me happier than reading Wodehouse. His writing exists on its own scale for me. Here, the book is rather episodic, connected by the various love affairs of Bertie's friend Bingo and, of course, the never-failing wisdom of Jeeves.

TheAromaofBooks This is my second completed book for #24B4Monday, which was my goal. I MAY finish Death on the Nile today as Christie's books usually read pretty fast for me, but we have a lot of projects scheduled, so I'm not sure how much reading time there will be!!

TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - I know Jeeves is the brains of the pair, but I really love Bertie so much. It's his narration that gives those stories such warmth and humor. 5⭐️The situations Bertie Wooster finds himself in will result in the reader wearing a perma-grin throughout this book, interspersed with periods of goofy snickering. Thank heavens for Jeeves‘ steady handling of all situations. I cannot rave enough what a wonderful reading experience this book was.

I missed the mark in the #24in48 due to some unexpected family obligations & beekeeping issues arising. But I sure had a blast and loved seeing all the wonderful posts!

🎓Those that hit their 24 hour mark, I salute your reading prowess and fortitude. Awesome reading!

Jeeves💕 The Mr. has dibs on my copy next because all my snickering over it caught his attention.

Librarybelle Great job! 7y

Jess_Read_This @Ashley_Nicoletto It‘s a Starbucks one and a recent purchase! I‘ve seen them still available at a few locations! 💕 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Jess_Read_This I've been debating getting one! I just looked at one again yesterday. But I have so many mugs. 7y
Jess_Read_This @Ashley_Nicoletto Me too... me too.. I‘m such an easy mark for Starbucks and Rae Dunn mugs. I have way too many. Yet sometimes can‘t fight the impulse to buy more... lol!!! 7y

Pickpick

My first Wodehouse and I liked it! Do all the stories jump around a bit or just this one? I didn‘t mind it but just curious? I like the subtlety of humor in this one. It all just works! Definitely will pick up another!

Centique Hmmm the ones I read didn‘t jump around much that I remember! Must try this one 😊 7y
Ash.on.the.line @Centique I think it was just a couple little mini stories in between the main one. I still enjoyed it though! 😊 7y

🙈💖My apologies @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks tagged me for PINK not Green books for #bookcolortag... I had to fix this.. especially when I was tagging people for Pink! 💕

💖I was so excited to search my shelves I misread her tag! Can you tell I was always picked last for sports? So a tag is exciting for me! 🤣

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Awww 💕 these are beautiful!!!! I totally messed up the 3,2,1 tag the other day!! I just listed as many as I wanted! I got too excited!! 😂 7y

Jess_Read_This @elkeo Hahaha! It's so true. I like the idea of sports but have had to reconcile myself to not being the athlete in the family. 7y

"How does he look, Jeeves?"
"Sir?"
"What does Mr Bassington-Bassington look like?"
"It is hardly my place, sir, to criticize the facial peculiarities of your friends."

I adore Jeeves. @batsy I had to show you the back cover too! I inwardly shrieked when I saw it at the used bookstore.
