We're reading this for Nov book club as we have a Thanksgiving meal planned (we have two Americans in our grouo) and thought this would be a good but challenging read!

“...I minded not how the hours went. The day advanced as if to light some work of mine; it was morning, and lo, now it is evening, and nothing memorable is accomplished...This was sheer idleness to my fellow-townsmen, no doubt; but if the birds and flowers had tried me by their standard, I should not have been found wanting. A man must find his occasions in himself, it is true. The natural day is very calm, and will hardly reprove his indolence.”

A book that surprised me with its timeliness. What Thoreau writes about the human society and its relationship to nature is now more actual than ever. This work should get more attention nowadays.

2. It‘s overcast here and about 70 degrees. It‘s starting to feel a little bit like fall in VA. 🍁
3. It was a blind date in college the night I first met my husband! It was awkward and we totally ran out of things to talk about five minutes into the date. Just to be clear, the date was NOT my husband-to-be! 😳

It only took me two months to finish this! I hate giving this a so-so, but even though it occasionally had great insights on how to “live better”, it mostly lulled me to sleep 😴. Read for #1001Books.

Will try to catch up on Litsy soon 💖! Need to run some errands first

DGRachel There's a whole thread on Twitter that started yesterday about how Thoreau is a fraud - his mother and sister cooked and cleaned for him while he was supposedly on his own, communing with nature. It's a riot. 😂 3mo

Book #54: While most of the books on my lists are strictly fiction, there are a few that delve into other aspects of history such as scientific and philosophical works. Walden was my first dip into these other, more intimidating, works of literature. And when I started this book I was expecting a rather long, dry, dull book, but in the end, I was...

This has been in my TBR forever! Random number selector picked this for my next #1001Books read.

IamIamIam I had to read this in a college class along with 4mo
ValerieAndBooks @IamIamIam that‘s an interesting pairing! As I haven‘t yet read Silent Spring, am curious how the discussions went. 4mo
IamIamIam @ValerieAndBooks To be totally honest, I was probably hung over and not listening because I don't remember much of that class!!! LOL... I was trying to remember what class it was, too. Environmental literature? I wonder what else it could have been. 4mo
See All 7 Comments
IamIamIam I checked my old transcript and I feel like it was a class called Evolving Earth, which makes a lot of sense. I do recall it being a huge lecture class, though, so I probably didn't participate too much. 4mo
AudreyMorris How did you set up your random number selector? I‘ve thought about doing that but haven‘t figured out an easy way. Because I want easy since the books probably won‘t be! 4mo
ValerieAndBooks @IamIamIam the class size does make a difference, doesn‘t it? Even so I don‘t remember much about what was discussed in college (such a long time ago for me!), so don‘t feel bad 😊. Maybe if you re-read both books it‘ll all come back to you 😀! 4mo
ValerieAndBooks @AudreyMorris I have the 1001 Books app, but if you don‘t, go from whatever type of list you have. I mark books I own but still TBR within the app. I use this link to help me pick; for Walden I got the number 5 and it‘s 5th in chronological order of the TBR. I hope I made sense 😊. https://www.random.org 4mo

I didn‘t go walking yesterday and knew I would regret it because it‘s supposed to rain all this week. Today, I was determined to finish Walden, fell asleep after about 2 pages, & it was storming when I woke up. Missed my chance to walk for #BFC. I did finish this book- it‘s a classic & has some valuable things to say, was prob more radical at the time. I will stick w/ Wendell Berry though, he says a lot of the same in a more concise & poetic way.

Scochrane26 I have meant to read this for yrs but mainly read it because Wendell Berry refers to it often in his books. Obv an influence on him. 5mo

Walden by Henry David Thoreau | Henry David Thoreau

In an essay by EB White at the end of Walden-“Walden is an oddity in American letters. It may very well be the oddest of our distinguished oddities. For many, it is a great deal too odd, and for many it is a particular bore.” He goes on to say that many respect it but don‘t like it much.
And that sums up most of my thoughts about the book. It has some interesting insights, & I see the influence on some of my fave authors.

My high school AP English teacher wasn‘t a fan of Thoreau—we sort of discussed CliffsNotes and the major themes, and moved on. I‘m glad I finally read it, but it was sort of a chore.

I enjoyed the nature: the lake in the seasons, the wildlife and plants, perhaps because I grew up living simply in the country. There were some philosophical gems, but mainly I found Thoreau to be way too overly wordy and holier-than-thou. 🤷🏻‍♀️

" I went to the woods because i wished to live deliberately...and not, when i came to die, discover i had not lived."

This book is going to be a eye opener and its a way of life i would love to live by. I feel like we all get lost in the everyday hustle bustle that we forget to truly open our eyes and senses and hearts and live.

There is so much beautiful life around us especially just being in ones self and nature . ??

I‘m trying really hard to stay interested in my Serial read for this month, but I keep falling behind.

Can someone please confirm that Thoreau will eventually stop being a sanctimonious bore and blow my mind or something?

🙄😂

Caterina I ended up finding this worth the read, but I wish a good editor had cut it down to half the length or less. You get the great, the boring, and the bad all mixed together. 🙄 6mo
Kimberlone He never stops being sanctimonious but I can promise you there are gems throughout. I think reading using the @SerialReader is a great way of getting through Walden (edited) 6mo
The_Real_Nani I kind of get what he‘s saying though! Some books may not resonate until you‘re in a certain season of your life. But calling readers dull? Can we say #intellectualsnob? lol 6mo
Theaelizabet The annotated version is REALLY helpful. I‘m not sure I could have made it through, otherwise. 6mo
sprainedbrain @The_Real_Nani This comes after a thrilling passage when he states that unless we‘ve read the classics in their original languages we haven‘t read them, and the greatest poems can only be really read and understood by the greatest poets. 🙄 6mo

Finally picked back up with my Walden reading using @SerialReader - the past couple of days have been splitting up the chapter “Reading.” There are some great nuggets in this chapter, but also a lot of statements that frustrate me. Like this one, which agree with to a certain extent, but also see through Thoreau‘s competing condescension and appreciation for the lowbrow.

Walden is a strange book. The more I read it, the more I appreciate it. The chapters are often paired dialectically, so they seem to contradict each other. Thoreau was a real weirdo, but he makes some beautiful observations about nature.
