4⭐️ I vaguely remember reading this book back when I was younger but I remember abandoning it because I didn‘t really understand what was going on. Reading it now, I thought that it was a really well-written story and that it probably was a little too much over my head at the time when I was younger. I liked how well the author developed the characters and the story. #2024 #bookreview #fiction #historicalfiction #middlegrade #newberymedal

3✨I finished this earlier this week, but the end of the school year always has me trying to balance life and work in a very unbalanced way. Kit is our main character who is struggling with how different it is in Connecticut than it was with her grandfather. She meets a nice woman who the town labels as a witch. He world is changed when accusations start flying. Not bad, but it‘s hard to engage very much at this time of year.

I read this book years ago when I was a little girl. I even remember the summer I went to the library to check it out. I chose to read this instead of going swimming. I‘m all about the water so if I‘m not in a pool or ocean I must be swept up with the story. It still all these years later spoke to me and I enjoyed every page. #AwardWinningReads

Finished my 1st book for October‘s #TrappedOnAnIsland. @Allylu did a great job picking books for me! I really enjoyed The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Set in Connecticut in 1687, it gave a realistic-feeling portrayal of life at that time, and the the way innocent people could be caught up in witch hunt fever. 4 stars.

I LOVED this book!!! Kit sails from her home in Barbados to her Puritan family in colonial Connecticut. She has trouble acclimating to their strict lives and finds a friend in the local witch, a Quaker who was tortured for her religion. Find out if Kit has made destructive choices or if the goodness of people can beat ignorance. 😁

I read this book when I was 12 years old, and I still remember it. This is considered to be a children‘s/middle grade novel, but adults can enjoy it too. This is considered to be a classic for a reason. This tells the story of Kit, an outcast girl in Puritan Connecticut who befriends an outcast old woman who is suspected of being a witch. The hatred and violence that masquerade as Christianity in this novel is astounding. The more things change…..

GondorGirl I was obsessed with books about outcasts as a kid and remember reading this one several times. I'd forgotten all about it until your post... 3y

The Witch of Blackbird Pond was my next Middle Grade book. It was published in the 50‘s but I don‘t think it has lost anything with age. It‘s a story of a New England town whose people were quick to call women who were educated, of a different faith and could swim witches! It‘s also about Kit and her life there. Quite good. #100YEARS100BOOKS #BookSpinBingo #13 (Another bingo!) #BFC21 #MGMarch #MarvellousMarch

I genuinely enjoyed this peek into the past. Kit‘s dropped right in the middle of Puritan New England and is as much an outsider to the way of life as the reader. Kit is everything I like in a protagonist: she‘s rebellious, good-hearted, and loyal. Everything comes together in the end and, you know what, sometimes that‘s exactly what should happen in a story. 💙

Kit, 16 y/o girl from Barbados raised in 1687 by her grandfather in very unconventional way. She will moved with her unknown aunt in Connecticut & will face difficulties to adapt to this family puritanical lifestyle. A lovely, cute story about friends, family, how to maintain your integrity. Don‘t miss this time where women were seen inferior and you could be accused of witchcraft for almost anything 3.8⭐️ #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaOfBooks 👇

"She had forgotten that summer would come again, that the green would spread over the frozen fields, that the earth would be turned up to the sun and the seed sown, and that the meadows would renew themselves. Was this what strengthened these New Englanders to endure the winter, the knowledge that summer's return would be all the richer for waiting?"

I never really understood the miracle of spring until I lived in New England.

A few years ago, my children and I did a class series on wool from sheep to fabric in which we were taught that you dye the wool after you spin it. So when Kit and Mercy sat carding blue-dyed wool in the tagged book, I thought Speare had gotten it wrong. Upon further investigation, wool can, in fact, be dyed before carding. @AmyG when you get my #litsylove , you can disregard the part of the letter where I complain about wool. :-)

AmyG Ha! 4y
PurpleTulipGirl Really? You can dye before carding? That seems counterintuitive. 4y
ImperfectCJ @PurpleTulipGirl It does to me, too, but the internet says you can. The sites I saw said there might be some felting but that carding would open up the fibers again. I haven't tried it, though. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Omgomgomg!!! I love making yarn! Yes, you can totally dye before carding! You can get some really gorgeous blends. I bought a handful of dyed locks a few years back and spun them in the raw. It was like spinning something from a fantasy creature! 😍 4y
