Sunne in Splendour | Sharon Kay Penman
44 posts | 36 read | 63 to read
A glorious novel of the controversial Richard III---a monarch betrayed in life by his allies and betrayed in death by historyIn this beautifully rendered modern classic, Sharon Kay Penman redeems Richard III---vilified as the bitter, twisted, scheming hunchback who murdered his nephews, the princes in the Tower---from his maligned place in history with a dazzling combination of research and storytelling.Born into the treacherous courts of fifteenth-century England, in the midst of what history has called The War of the Roses, Richard was raised in the shadow of his charismatic brother, King Edward IV. Loyal to his friends and passionately in love with the one woman who was denied him, Richard emerges as a gifted man far more sinned against than sinning. This magnificent retelling of his life is ?lled with all of the sights and sounds of battle, the customs and lore of the ?fteenth century, the rigors of court politics, and the passions and prejudices of royalty.

And she persisted! Rachel patiently chipped away at this book for 6 months and just completed #ChunksterChallenge2021! DON'T BE AFRAID of those big books -- it just takes a little more time, but you can get there. :)

1240 pages later… I actually finished my #ChunksterChallenge2021 during last week‘s #20in4 readathon. And was far too shocked by this turn of events to actually review it, so here we are!

It was epic. Obviously. And I really enjoyed it! I‘ve never read much kings‘n‘queens history, so to keep me on board was quite a feat- and my immediate reaction on finishing was to download a podcast about Richard III -so we may have started something here!

rockpools I loved just how complicated most of the characters were, their flaws and mistakes making them seem very human. And I loved that, in a book about Kings, the women are real, strong characters whose actions and opinions have an impact.

So yes, I was a fan. It took me just the 6 months to finish it, but I‘ve learned that that‘s OK - I actually enjoyed treating it
3y
rockpools like a soap opera rather than something to be finished, and being able to stop and start as and when. And yes, I may well read more Penman… one day! 3y
Andrew65 Brilliant. One of my favourite books, and Richard III is fascinating. 3y
See All 17 Comments
Andrew65 I recommend her welsh princes trilogy which starts with Here Be Dragons. 3y
Amiable Hooray! It‘s fine to take 6 months to finish a chunkster —you finished, which is the goal! And you liked it! Bonus points. Congratulations! 3y
rockpools @Amiable Thanks for the encouragement to give it a go! I‘m planning another chunkster for next year already… Out of interest, how many pages makes for a chunkster in your challenge? 3y
rockpools @Andrew65 Really fascinating. I had no idea! And I may well give the Welsh princes a go at some point. Not sure the tagged book‘s the one though!! Maybe this? 3y
CoverToCoverGirl Well done! This book is on my to get to list…someday. 🙂 3y
Amiable @rockpools I mean, my own personal annual chunkster challenge is something that‘s approximately 1,000 pages or more. For me, a “chunkster” is at least 800+pages. But my goal for the challenge is to encourage people to tackle whatever “giant” book intimidates them personally. So that could mean something different to each reader. I really just want people to find the courage to dive into the big books! (edited) 3y
LeahBergen If you‘re interested in a bit of more recent (nonfiction) about Richard III, check this one out. I found it fascinating! 3y
rockpools @CoverToCoverGirl 😂 That to get to list just keeps growing! 3y
rockpools @Amiable Thank you! (I go to quite extreme lengths to avoid chunky chunksters!!) If you run it again next year, I have 1Q84 and The Tale of Genji on my shelves- I found being part of the challenge really helpful in actually finishing! 3y
rockpools @LeahBergen Oh, go on then! I would be curious to read more 😁 3y
Amiable @rockpools I am! Just working on the graphic for the new year. :) 3y
Caroline2 Whey!! Well done, it‘s such a chunkster. I‘m going to start it Jan and read it in between other books so it‘ll prob take most of the year….! 😬 3y
rockpools @Caroline2 Thank you for introducing me to it - I think it was you and @TrishB enthusing about SKP that started me down this road! 3y

Start of day 2 of the #20in4 readathon, and I‘m 14 chapters through my 24 chapter goal for this weekend. On track to actually finish a chunkster within 6 months (shock!)

In the last 24 hours, I‘ve learnt who the princes in the tower were and what consumption is (TB probably). We‘ve had tragedy after tragedy, but I think it might get proper sad from here on in. Also, very grateful for central heating and hot running water.

TrishB I‘ve read to the end twice and I know historically what happens obviously but I can‘t do it to myself again. I am the same with anything about Boudicca. I am glad you‘re enjoying though. 3y
rockpools @TrishB I appear to be a complete ignoramous where kings-and-queens history is concerned, so it‘s all new to me! (Apart from the spoilers I stumbled across on TV trash about Tenby the other week, obvs 😂). I haven‘t even gone there with Boudicca - give me 6 months to recover from this one, and I‘ll ask you for recommendations! Hope you have some fab books for your retreat. 3y
TrishB I had some great reads 😁 and a wonderful de-stressing weekend. 3y

#ChunksterChallenge2021 update! @Amiable

The bookmarks are edging their way further back in the book - I‘m on p788/1240. Still hopeful of finishing before the end of the year. Apparently it‘s only been 6 months (I‘m counting that as a win)!

And yes, I am still enjoying it - just slowly.

And what ARE they going to do about George?!

(Edited because it‘d help if I had the right hashtag!!)

Amiable Excellent l!! Slow and steady wins the race —and finishes the chunkster! 👍🏼 3y
CoverToCoverGirl Definitely one I need to read. 3y
rockpools @Amiable 😂😂 A little more slow than steady, but we‘re getting there! 3y

It‘s official. You‘re all bad and/or strange influences. I appear to have been bookshopping at 3am this morning, and bought myself a behemoth to read for my first #chunksterchallenge.

Nothing about that paragraph looks like it was written by me.

Fairly sure @Caroline2 and @TrishB had a hand in this, somewhere.

Caroline2 Ohhh I‘ve had this book on my shelf for ages now. It is massive!! It would prob take me a month to finish it!!! 😆 4y

IT IS FINALLY HERE! My “new” copy got lost in the mail and the 3rd party bookseller didn‘t have another. Instead, they sent a “very good” used copy. DGRachel You are making me want to reread this!! 6y
Cinfhen Hubby‘s newest favorite author!!!! 6y
Cinfhen Hubby has a different cover...I think it‘s red 6y
LeslieO I haven‘t read this yet but it‘s on my shelf! 6y

TrishB @DGRachel because it‘s so good! 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen he has good taste! I‘ve seen the red cover too! 6y
TrishB @LeslieO you‘ve got a great waiting for you 👍🏻 6y
LeslieO Looking forward to it. I loved The Princes in the Tower by Allison Weir. 6y
TrishB @LeslieO Weir has a very different approach/opinion on RIII, should be interesting for you to read. 6y
LeahBergen I have the really ugly US 1st edition cover. 😆😆 6y
TrishB @LeahBergen post yours when you get the chance! 6y
LeahBergen @TrishB Will do. Prepare yourself. 😆😆 6y
TrishB @LeahBergen can‘t wait 😁 6y
DGRachel @TrishB @LeahBergen OMG! I just found a new copy of the 30th anniversary edition on AbeBooks for just under $50. Guess who‘s going to have a hardcover edition in 7-21 days? 😍😍 6y
LeahBergen @DGRachel Awesome!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And I soooo want to reread the Welsh trilogy now. Hmm... 2019 buddy read? 😆 6y
DGRachel @LeahBergen YES, PLEASE!!!! I am purposely not doing any challenges this year, beyond the normal Goodreads total and *maybe* MountTBR. I want to be free to read what I want when I want and not feel the pressure of fitting prompts and running out of time. 6y
saresmoore I have never read these books, but all the posts are making me want to! 6y
TrishB @DGRachel fab 😁😁 @LeahBergen I may join in depending when you do it! But don‘t arrange around me just in case. 6y
TrishB @saresmoore there are no better historical fiction books 😁 6y
rubyslippersreads @LeslieO Me too. This is definitely going to be my year to read it. 6y
rubyslippersreads @DGRachel What a wonderful find! 6y

arubabookwoman Loved that book. We all know from history how it ends, but at the end, as I was crying, I was mentally pleading with Richard, “Don‘t go. “Don‘t go.” (To Bosworth Field). 6y

My head has just about exploded trying to choose just one book, so many great books to choose from. Ended up going with one from one of my favourite authors but again could have still chosen from a number of her books! What‘s not to love about Richard III‘s story.

DGRachel I love that cover! 6y
Weaponxgirl I've not heard of this author before, will search her out now 6y

I received The Sunne In Splendour for Christmas, and I was super excited to start it - it was going to be my first post-Christmas read. But sadly my mum was also excited about all things Richard III and begged me to let her keep it and read it first. I‘m home for the weekend, and the first thing I did was check her progress. Not long to wait now!!! 😆

Thanks everyone for your help with my requests! I now have oh-so-many chunksters on the way; Seton, Penman, Howatch, Rutherford, Uris, Dunnett, Eco, Falcones, McCullough... I spent 37,40 incl. postage. Who let the 🤓 out? #yearofthechunkster

#SetInFaveEra

Hmm... the UK and Europe, between 900 and 1600 AD. Too broad? 😉 (and I can't even decide if this IS my favourite era).

#FallIntoBooks

DGRachel Sounds like the perfect stretch of time and place to me. I approve. 😍 7y
Melissa_J I love that "era" too ? 7y
drokka I think it's a rather lovely sized bucket. I'd place a charger under it, you know, for some centenary spillage. 😉 (edited) 7y

This is me being Star-struck. I love SKP she is my absolute favorite author. She has responded to a few of my comments and posts that I've tagged her in and it left me giddy like a teenager. The Sunne in Splendour is my all time favorite book ( if I had to pick) I also love Elizabeth Chadwick whose books I found out about through SKP's blog.

Moonpa Haven't read Sunne in Splendor yet - a little intimidated by the page count! Loved When Christ and his Saints Slept 7y
Yeah_I_Read @Moonpa omg! You don't even notice it. If you have read her before please read Sunne it is incredible ❤️❤️ 7y

rubyslippersreads I need to read this. (Though probably not right after the #chunkster that is #GWTW 😄). 7y
DGRachel I LOVE this cover. 😍 I do not need another copy of this book. I have the paperback and Kindle version, but this is so beautiful. I should own all of SKP's work in hardback, right? I owe it to her, as a fan of her work, to support her. Right? Yes. That's why I must find and buy this... 7y

TrishB @DGRachel I have this one in all formats so I truly think you should 😂 I have one more to get in hardback, slowly brought them all again where I only had paperback! 7y
rubyslippersreads @DGRachel @TrishB And as the anniversary edition, isn't this one slightly revised? So you owe it to yourself to complete your collection. 😄 #enabler #Ricardian 7y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads It's revised?? Oh oh. I may need to check it out. I have a US first edition of this and the cover is HIDEOUS. 😂 7y
DGRachel @LeahBergen I just saw that cover when I went looking for this edition and you're right - it's AWFUL! What were the publishers thinking? 😂😂 7y
DGRachel @TrishB @rubyslippersreads I knew I could count on your support. 😂. I need this one and the Welsh Princes trilogy in hardcover. I have all the others. (edited) 7y
LeahBergen @DGRachel It's brutally bad, isn't it? I have to keep it though as I have them all in first editions. 😂 My first edition cover for Here Be Dragons is laughably awful, too. It actually has a dragon. Flying through the sky. 😳 7y
TrishB @DGRachel @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads yes SKP found some errors and corrected them for this edition. She found them due to new research. That flying dragons cover 😱😱 7y
Cinfhen Yay 😊 #NoRain 7y
Melissa_J I ❤️that book 👍🏻 I may have to invest in a new edition as mine's a little beat up. 7y

#aintnobody that writes historical fiction like Sharon Kay Penman. The Sunne in Splendour is one of the best historical fiction books out there, but also have to recommend The Welsh Princes Trilogy that I ❤️ and When Christ and His Saints Slept. Big tomes but well worth the effort!

DGRachel That cover!!!! 😍😍😍😍 7y
DGRachel And I absolutely agree with this assessment. I almost used her for this prompt! 7y

I'm totally obsessed with the English monarchy 1066-1485, but especially Henry II/Eleanor and their offspring and the Wars of the Roses, especially Richard III.

I might have gone a teeny, tiny bit overboard during Book Outlet's Boxing Day Sale. I took my TBR list on GR and ranked it by average rating, then looked for deals. Plus two translated poetry books that I'm hoping will work for #readharder2017. 14 books for under 60 bucks! Yowza. Now patience until they arrive ...

SharonGoforth The Sunne in Splendor is so good!! 8y

While it is the fourth of Penman's novels that I read, her novel about Richard III is actually her first. Richly detailed and well researched, it's a fantastic novel about a fascinating (and much maligned) monarch. #debutnovel #booktober

Moonpa I've read most of her books except this one. How long did you take to read this? I'm imitated by the size. 8y
DGRachel @Moonpa I read it 20 years ago, so I really don't remember. I don't think it's much bigger than some of her Plantagenet novels. If you've read those I don't see any reason to be intimidated by the size. 😊 8y
Dragon Loved this 📚 8y
