Told in a series of diary entries, letters, newspaper articles, letters, and telegrams, we follow John and Mina Harker, Lucy Westenra, Dr. Seward, and Professor Van Helsing as they investigate strange happenings, Lucy‘s mysterious illness and eventual death, and folklore while trying to stop the dangerous newcomer, Count Dracula.

3✨ I read this with a pretty busy mind so I‘ll want to do a reread in the future. I enjoyed the writing and how it started out. There was a lot of narrative instead of dialogue which made it harder for me at this moment in my life to stay focused. I liked how it was written and would have likely enjoyed it more if I gave myself more time or was not as busy while I read it. #Scarathlon #BatBrigade @Catsandbooks (I audio and physically read)

I highly encourage you to read this book if you‘ve been putting it off!
I avoided this book (and all the movies) because I‘m not a fan of horror. MISTAKE!
This is an amazing book. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I now have a much better perspective of the all the more contemporary versions of these characters of Dracula, Renfield, and Van Helsing. Wish I had read this years ago.

This audible version with the multiple narrators is perfect for the epistolary style.

it is a strange world, a sad world, a world full of miseries, and woes, and troubles. And yet when King Laugh come, he make them all dance to the tune he play. Bleeding hearts, and dry bones of the churchyard, and tears that burn as they fall, all dance together to the music they he make with that smileless mouth of him.

I was interested in reading the book because I wanted to see where our modern conceptions of vampires came from, & that aspect of the novel was definitely interesting. But, that was just about the only part of the book that I enjoyed. The pace was mind-numbingly slow, & the plot was relatively uneventful. Stoker could have gone in so many interesting directions, but instead he had endless pages of droning on about unimportant details.

Well Dracula is finally a wrap!! I spontaneously signed up for the #DraculaDaily emails back in May, but also bought a physical copy because I just don't like reading on screens very much. Plus, I obviously need as many Penguins Classics as possible!! At any rate, I did enjoy this one, but I think I did it a disservice by reading it across such a long period of time when I had never read it before. During times in the story where a chunk of time⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) passes and we would go a long time without a #DraculaDaily email, I would sort of lose the thread of the story. I think it would be fun to the daily emails again next year now that I've actually read the entire story and know where it's going. So a little bit of a soft pick for me because the story seemed to lose momentum sometimes, but that could also be because of the way I read it. 1y
wideeyedreader If you like podcasts and the Dracula daily format, there‘s one in the works called re:dracula that is a dramatization of the novel with the same “as the story happens” format! I‘m super excited for it 1y
PuddleJumper I completely forgot about that! I've just been filtering the emails into a folder thinking I'd read them later 😂 1y

ShyBookOwl Funnily enough, I had the opposite experience where I had to read it too quickly for school which I think did it a disservice 😕 1y
TheAromaofBooks @wideeyedreader - Oh wow, I'm not usually a podcast person, but that does sound super fun!! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @PuddleJumper - Now you may just have to wait and start fresh next year! 😂 1y
TheAromaofBooks @ShyBookOwl - There has to be a balance between our two methods!! 😂 1y
ShyBookOwl @TheAromaofBooks agreed! Lol I also signed up for Dracula Daily but didn't end up following along. Every couple years I think, I owe Dracula a re-read... I'll get there, I can feel it 😅 1y
wideeyedreader @TheAromaofBooks I agree! It sounds more like it‘ll be a full-cast audiobook than a typical podcast, honestly 1y

Last year I read and loved Frankenstein for the first time so this year I settled into Dracula, and I loved it, too - the writing is gorgeous. I started this weeks ago and read a couple chapters at a time until the final stretch- a good approach for me. I was surprised that Dracula was the subject but not the main character of the story. But Lucy, Mina and the men who fought for her honor were great characters.

I had started Dracula forever ago for an undergrad class, but chose to leave it unfinished as readings were piling up. This time, instead of reading my physical copy, I listened to the audiobook. And I finally finished it. It‘s a good story. Different from what you‘d expect from pop culture representations of Dracula (or even Van Helsing). The Audible-exclusive audiobook has multiple narrators, including Tim Curry!

Been really enjoying using highlights to annotate, feels a lot more realistic than using sticky tabs and I can make sure everything I want marked is easily marked. Also loving to see how far the vampire lore/genre has come since this classic was released in the 1800s!

Do you annotate your books at all?

I am loving this new trend of Classic newsletters! 📖

1. Yes! Dracula! And also Frankenstein, although that one hasn‘t started yet.
2. I think they‘re brilliant and reigniting a desire for serialized fiction.
3. Moby Dick. I‘m not sure how that would work, but maybe I could finally make it through that book! 😂

#SundayFunday Have a fantastic day and remember to tag me!

Clare-Dragonfly Ooh, I didn‘t know there would be a Frankenstein one! Thank you! I love that it says it‘s “for Tumblr,” having been on Tumblr a bit recently and seen the Dracula Daily obsession 😂 When I subscribed to the Frankenstein one it gave me more suggestions—“Watson,” Carmilla, Pride and Prejudice, and Moby Dick! 2y
ravenlee I saw an interview with the creator of Dracula Daily, and he mentioned this family in which the mom was writing short notes for the daughter‘s lunch box and she said they were too short so the mom started putting a paragraph of Moby Dick on each one!
