How to Read a Book (Revised and Updated)
How to Read a Book (Revised and Updated) | Charles Van Doren, Mortimer J Adler
With half a million copies in print, How to Read a Book is the best and most successful guide to reading comprehension for the general reader, completely rewritten and updated with new material. A CNN Book of the Week: "Explains not just why we should read books, but how we should read them. It's masterfully done." -Farheed Zakaria Originally published in 1940, this book is a rare phenomenon, a living classic that introduces and elucidates the various levels of reading and how to achieve them--from elementary reading, through systematic skimming and inspectional reading, to speed reading. Readers will learn when and how to "judge a book by its cover," and also how to X-ray it, read critically, and extract the author's message from the text. Also included is instruction in the different techniques that work best for reading particular genres, such as practical books, imaginative literature, plays, poetry, history, science and mathematics, philosophy and social science works. Finally, the authors offer a recommended reading list and supply reading tests you can use measure your own progress in reading skills, comprehension, and speed.

This is truly disturbing. I love the “I have different science” claim. I bet I know who he votes for in 2016 and 2020. This is yet more proof that America needs to embrace real science and not “alternate” ideas. 🤦🏼‍♀️🥃🧬 As an educator, this really bothers me.
#raisingreaders #reading #education

GingerAntics Even NPR is talking about this. Yet so many parents and teachers have no clue. https://www.npr.org/2019/01/02/677722959/why-millions-of-kids-cant-read-and-what... 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Wow! I know schools want to do well at tests (of which there are too many) but if many can't even read, hote would they do that? This is eye opening. My cousin is 22 years younger than me. For years she struggled with spelling because 1 kindergarden teacher told her it wasn't important. I instituted a new rule when she was with me... she couldn't ask for anything she couldn't spell. 4y
GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I would have gone hungry. lol I was in a school that firmly believed spelling was important, and I sucked at it. Many nights were spent in tears because I couldn‘t figure out how to spell the “easy” words. This is truly troubling, though. I was lucky enough to attend a school that taught phonics in this 90‘s. I was a phonics rockstar. I had no idea how impressive and exceptional my education was until recently. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Well I never would've let anyone go hungry. 😁 I knew she was better than she demonstrated, just didn't try. She was opposite of the NPR article, inviting me to her dance residle. (Recital) She just needed a push. My trick came in handy when her brother tried asking for a Lamborghini for Christmas. Can't spell it, won't get it! 🤣🤣🤣 4y
GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 🤣😂🤣 saved by the spelling!!! 4y

The art of reading, in short includes all the same skills that are involved in the art of unaided discovery: keenness of observation readily available memory, range of imagination, and of course an intellect trained in analysis and reflection. The reason for this is that reading in this sense is discovery, too.
This is year is one of the hardest and most difficult one, I am glad I have books to help me escape the painful reality we are living

So ‘hermeneutics‘ got its name from Hermes, the trickster god of Ancient Greece. Who knew? Still - it‘s a salient reminder of how tricky reading can be. Adler and Van Doren know this well and their guide covers all the bases: from the ‘levels‘ at which we read all the way to genre-specific critiques. You‘ll never know what you‘ve been missing until you learn how to read. That seems to be the message, anyhow. I‘d skip the tests in the back, though.

runswithscissors007 Interest piqued. 4y
MatchlessMarie That is a hilarious fact I‘m surprised I never learned in bible college 😅 4y
Mistermandolin @MatchlessMarie They never taught it to me either. I guess it makes a sort of sense: Hermes is the god of betwixt and between, which is exactly the space where interpretation occurs. Biblical fundamentalists who believe we soak up scripture like a sponge soaks up water simply don‘t know what reading a text - any text - involves. This book would put them right. (edited) 4y

Terrific book which has completely changed my whole perspective on reading. Reading is a pretty time consuming hobby for those of us that love it. Yet most of us never get half the value from a good book that we would if we became as Adler says “active readers”, people who read with intentionality and aren‘t afraid to be in over their heads.

Before you read another book, read this one!

But now, in my 7th month, I can't STOP reading aloud because I am officially reading to my son! I hope he will know my voice from all this reading time and we will bond because of it 🥰 •

I feel like if I continue to read books for the rest of my life, I would end up writing this book. The breakdown of how to read a book seems pretty intuitive if you have read a lot of books. A lot of what the author is saying makes sense, but only because I've read a lot of nonfiction. Had I tried to read this back in high school or college, I would probably not find it helpful at all because of it's length and age.

📖 Yes, if I have to stop, I have to finish that chapter at some point in the day.
🕰 I can read any time of the day. During the school year it is a bit tougher to read as much as I want to, but I fit it in.
🤐 I don't need quiet, I can read with noise, but I prefer a quiet space to read or maybe a little music.

A day for which this is a suitable end. Finished up a dreadfully overloaded orientation and then finding something intelligent to say about a couple of chapters in this book. Text is definitely dated in its vocabulary and oh my, the reading list is incredibly dated and narrow. Needs a blurb acknowledging all books recommended are part of the western cannon (not the ONLY great books ever written) and by LONG dead white guys.

Sace Ugh. Prepare for a lot of drinking. That book is my idea of hell 😂 6y

Hi, I'd like to join in a reading challenge of some kind but am not sure how to do this. I've found this image on the internet and it looks like fun. Just need to know how to start. Can anyone help me? ☺

Chelleo Check out the #bingo posts to see how people are doing these. I haven‘t done a bingo card but from what I understand you find books that match a square and you mark them off until you‘ve completed the entire board. Not sure what the official hashtag is for the one you‘ve posted (usually you can find related details that way) hope this helps. 7y

Sace @River_Voice @Jess_Read_This I felt like the book could be helpful at becoming a better non fiction reader? It was originally written in the 1940s and I always got the impression that Adler was writing to people who weren't going to college, but wanted to get more out of their reading. Kind of like the first How To Read Literature Like a Professor. But more general? And more boring. 7y

Reading a really interesting article by #mortimerjadler about marking books.
He makes compelling arguments for marking books in creating true 'ownership' and ensuring an 'active' reading experience. He argues the soul of book is more then just the pages and binding, and can only be found when one explores their veiw, opinions agreements and discrepancies!

What are you views on #bookmarking #annotations #marginalia #essays #howtomarkabook #note

LibrarianRyan For everyday books I'm not a book marker. Usually. For books I teach with kids they are written all over. I use various colors for vocabulary words, characters, and other. I started with pencil but it fades after about a year so now I use pen. And real honest, currently I prefer ebooks for books I have to mark up. No need to have all my notes retyped. 7y
dariazeoli I haven't marked my books since college. But perhaps I should for better retention! 7y
litmuggle I dont wright in everyday books either but I do mark in my Christian books. 7y

Bostonmomx2 I don't generally mark up novels (although will use the highlight feature in my Kindle) but will always and often use my highlighter when reading nutrition/health books. 7y
LauraJ I write in my nonfiction books frequently, but rarely in fiction. 7y
CouronneDhiver I don't mark anything down into my books, but I have nothing against making notes in a journal. 7y
