Fairytales, Godmothering, and foreign travel - a fun mix, and rife with possibilities for classic Pratchett wit and nonsense! Nanny Ogg is fabulous, as always. Her postcards home are hilarious, as are her foreign language abilities. 😂

The true story of the pumpkin coach - the fairy godmother couldn‘t use her wand for anything else! The notion of happily ever after fairytales actually being neverending nightmares in which you can be killed for not be jolly enough is scary. Fortunately, the witches are on their way. 🤗

For me, Sir Terry is at his best when he writes stories about stories, and here he has great fun riffing on fairy tales and ‘happy ever afters‘. As always, there‘s lots of characteristic Pratchett humour overlaying more serious questions - this time about autonomy and the right to make our own choices and define for ourselves what ‘happy ever after‘ means. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Okay here are my choices #LMPBC #Round9

I‘ll tag them below too. I added my only Pratchett because everyone so far had 1 😂

3 should be fluffy/light. Not sure about the Pratchett. I also thought about recommending No Country for Old Gnomes (it‘s compared to Pratchett and it‘s funny), but it‘s the 2nd book and I don‘t know if you should read in order.

Laughterhp This a retelling of Persuasion (which I‘ve never read) 5y
Laughterhp This is a Sleeping Beauty retelling 5y
Laughterhp I feel like this one is obvious what it‘s about 😂 5y
See All 15 Comments
Laughterhp Not pictured and I‘m planning to read for June anyway 😂 5y
TheAromaofBooks I'm totally behind any of these!! I've read Spindle's End many times because I love it so hard, so I'm completely fine with reading it with the group!! The others also look fun, but I have a thing about reading books in order, so if you go with the Gnomes, I'll probably read the first book first 😂 5y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I was going to ask if Spindle‘s End was good, but it must be if you‘ve read it a lot! 😂. Yeah that‘s why Gnomes was an unofficial recommendation. I know a lot of people like to read in order. 5y
TheAromaofBooks Spindle's End is a book that not everyone would necessarily like - McKinley is a bit rambly in that one, with loads of parenthetical asides (if you don't like parentheses, do NOT read this book haha) and such, but I still love it. I bought a copy on vacation back in 2003 and have taken it with me on vacation almost every year since for a reread! 5y
Sace I could have sworn I already reasoned to this! I'm cool with any of them, but I wouldn't want to read anything out of order. 5y
Laughterhp @Sace haha no worries. That‘s totally fine not wanting to read anything out of order. I figured you all would respond that way. It‘ll probably be between Ugly Stepsister, Witches Abroad or the Jane Austen one. Just waiting to hear from @Chrissyreadit 5y
Chrissyreadit @Sace I thought I responded to it too!!! My short term memory stinks. @TheAromaofBooks I love McKinley and have Spindles End but read it when my babies were babies (2 babies in 2 years) and call those times my dark ages- I can‘t remember anything including the books I read. 5y
Chrissyreadit My first choice is Jane Austen, then either of the other two. 5y
Laughterhp @Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks @Sace Okay, based on everyone‘s comments, I‘m going to pick Jane Austen in Scarsdale for my choice. 5y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 5y
Sace Woot! 5y
Chrissyreadit @Laughterhp @Sace @TheAromaofBooks I can‘t wait to see how Queens College is presented. I graduated with my first masters from there ❤️ and loved it. 5y

I have a trick with Discworld books (since I have so many that I still haven't read, and they don't have chapters) where I'll sticky-tab every ~35 pages where there's a paragraph break. Then when I get to that part, I'll move the tab to the "chapter break" in the next book. So when one book is finished, the next is ready to go!

JazzFeathers Fantastic! I need to read more Pratchett. I'm intrigued by the Night Watch series. I read the first book and l liked it (even in ltalian, though l think Pratchett needs to be read in the original form). But l hear the Witches are particularly outstanding. 5y
See All 7 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I started with an offshoot of the witches.... Tiffany Aching, which is a YA Pratchett and feel in love there, so the witches have always been my favorite. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey I think because we are steeped in Tolkien at the moment, we are noticing them even more often. 5y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa You may have a point there. I do think I‘ve become more attuned with more reading, but I also think I‘ve been lucky in a good selection of books currently. Another one today in 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey That one‘s on my list to read yet too, I was hoping to read it with the group, but at the rate I‘m going it won‘t happen until next year. Oh well, so many books, not enough time!🤷‍♀️ 5y

Soubhiville Good morning Pratchett fans! I‘ve read this one twice in the last 3 years. The first time I‘d just gotten it as a gift, and it fell a little flat for me. The second it clicked better and I loved it and laughed a ton, maybe because I‘ve been rereading the whole series so the other witch books were a bit fresher. 5y
See All 15 Comments
Soubhiville My favorite part of this one is Greebo‘s alternate personality! I just love that cat! 5y
julesG @Soubhiville Greebo's alternate personality is MEOoooowwwe! 😁 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Soubhiville @julesG I just finished last night, running behind as usual. I also loved Greebo‘s part, and I quite enjoyed watching the witches fracture all our favorite fairy tales in their journey as they poke fun at the whole thing. For instance why would chopping your way through some briars and kissing a sleeping girl make anyone good husband material. 🤔 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Plus I thought Nanny was quite hilarious in this one...her contemplations about, now if we could reverse this and have the man at night and frog in the daytime...that‘d be more workable. So much less fuss and mess. 🤣 5y
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I also thought Nanny was much stronger in this one. And, since I haven't read all Witches books yet, I'm still hoping the Hedgehog song's lyrics will be on one of the other books. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG My edition has a blurb by the author in the beginning saying he has received a lot of unsolicited verses for the song from readers.🤣 5y
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😂😂 I'll Google 5y
Soubhiville @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG you can find some videos of the song on YouTube as well! 5y
khooliha Just finished this right before dinner, snuffling quietly over them going to see the elephant. Sometimes on this reread I find myself wishing that some characters got more space (hi Magrat!), but the hits in this book basically don't stop coming. 5y
khooliha Buuuuut maybe don't stop the oppressed people of a city end the upper class with the concept of a swamp??? Let the idea of alligators chomp some richey riches. 5y
khooliha Also, this is one of my Josh Kirby illustrated editions (don't love it), and I guess he thought parrots live in New Orleans? 5y
julesG @khooliha Yeah, the parrot doesn't really make sense. I've been wondering about it too. 😁 5y

There is nothing quite like roadtripping with the Discworld witches! They grab their brooms and head off for some alternate fairy godmothering (to STOP a gal marrying a prince). As expected, the witches are awkward tourists disrespecting foreign foods & massacring languages. Along the way they encounter a suspicious number of stories and ‘rural legends‘ being acted out. A very satisfying story, with some Granny Weatherwax backstory revealed.

Magrat is bequeathed a magic wand and is now a Fairy Godmother. She sets off to foreign lands with Granny and Nanny to stop the girl from marrying the prince.

I like the witches, particularly Nanny, but these aren't my favorite stories. I figure with over 30 books I'm allowed to not like some as much as the others. Still a solid Pick that I would reccomended others to read.

Dear Overdrive users who read on your phones,

Help! Is there a simple way to ‘go back‘ to the previous page you were looking at? For e.g., if you follow a footnote, how do you get back?

I can fudge it if I remember to add a bookmark before I click the link, but the chances of remembering every time are pretty remote...

Thanks in advance!

Moray_Reads Pressing the footnote number should take you back but it can be really fiddly to hit it just right. It's a real problem when reading Discworld! 5y

“You can‘t go around building a better world for people. Only people can build a better world for people. Otherwise it‘s just a cage.”

Somehow Sir Terry synthesizes folk tales, voodoo, European travel, fairy godmothers, and New Orleans into this tale of the witches trying to help Emberella not attend a ball, achieving both madcap hilarity and a thoughtful meditation on free will and the power of stories.

Just wow. #DiscRead
