some poems were written in that long form style that annoys me but others were very good. all sad though, if the title didn‘t clue you in on the type of content.
another poetry book gifted by my sister.

AnneCecilie I‘m not so sure I agree with this. I‘ve always been seen as younger than I am and the older I get the bigger the difference is between my actual age and my perceived age. I‘m just happy I didn‘t have to show ID when I bought some wine the other day. You have to be 18 to buy and I‘m almost 40 and it‘s one of the few times that has happened (edited) 3y

DebbieGrillo @AnneCecilie This is an excerpt from a poem. I shared it to meet the challenge. This one was to use or represent the word 'esteem'. 3y

I picked up this book of poetry after hearing Sabrina Benaim in an online poetry event. She said her German publisher translated the title as: Life & Other Magic Tricks… because there‘s no German word for depression. (?!) Since then, I‘ve also viewed some of her spoken word performances online. Anyway, I enjoy her wordplay & recommend this collection. #Canadian #poetry

Lindy @julesG Is it true that there‘s no German word for depression? 3y
BethM I‘ve not read the book but I‘ve seen a lot of her online performances. So good! 3y
Lindy @BethM Cool! “Explaining My Depression to My Mother” is a popular video 😁 3y

julesG The German word is Depression. I'd guess the German publisher didn't want to have the word Depression on the title. 3y
julesG Just checked, the German edition by Penguin is bilingual 😲🥳. So it has the German and English title on the cover and all the poems are in German and English. 3y
KathyR I checked an online dictionary and found that "depression" is "depression", but with a German accent. But, the Germans do have a word for Sunday afternoon depression: Sonntagsleerung (Sunday emptying), 3y
Anna40 Depression in a title sounds crappy. I think that might me the reason. I grew up in Germany, never heard the word Sonntagsleerung for Sunday afternoon depression. Must be a new term or one that's not used frequently. Interesting topic. Love that they published a bilingual version! 3y
julesG @KathyR @Anna40 - "Sonntagsleerung"??? ???? That means the post box is being emptied on a Sunday. (not all post boxes are being emptied on Sundays, so it's something special) 3y
Lindy @julesG @anna40 @KathyR It‘s great to hear that the German edition is actually bilingual. This comment thread has been fun! Thanks for your contributions. 😁 3y
julesG I'll need to check the German equivalent to the Oxford English Dictionary. I'll get back to you. 3y
julesG I'd like to see the source where the author of the book took "Sonntagsleerung" from. I've checked using different corpus references from the 1400s on for German and German variations as spoken in Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria. Not a single reference to the use of the word in medical or psychological context. The only info: It's a term used since the late 1990s referring to the emptying of certain post boxes on Sundays. 3y
Lindy @julesG Thanks for your research! 😁This is reminding me of Eley Williams‘ novel about a lexicographer who invents words: 3y
julesG Some further research (in Swiss archives) came up with the following tagged book. Which is a book full of German seeming loan words crafted by the author. 3y
julesG This book ⬆️ contains the "Sonntagsleerung". 3y
Lindy @julesG Ha! Here‘s an award for your champion sleuthing skills: 🏆🌹😊👍 3y
julesG Thank you 🙏 3y
KathyR Ah, the perils of skimming the internet. Thanks julesG for correcting my post. 3y
Lindy @KathyR 🤗 @julesG 🤗 3y
julesG @KathyR You threw me an interesting bone. 😉 I love researching, especially etymology. It's fascinating. And I was bugged that I couldn't find a single reference. 3y

Didn't love this one - but I also didn't hate it. A handful of standout poems kept it out of the "pan" category for me. Overall I found the works hard to focus on - I guess this poets experience with depression is different from mine.

Depression & Other Magic Tricks is the debut book by Sabrina Benaim, one of the most-viewed performance poets of all time, whose poem "Explaining My Depression to My Mother" has become a cultural phenomenon.
Depression & Other Magic Tricks explores themes of mental health, love, and family. It is a documentation of struggle and triumph, a celebration of daily life and of living.

First of all, the picture is NOT mine (I would never allow my fingernails to look like that one). Anyway, this book was so good I had to stand up and read it like Sabrina does on her live shows. It was filled with magic tricks.

⭐️2.5/5
After watching Benaim‘s spoken poem “Explaining my Depression to my Mother” I was thrilled to find this collection at my local bookstore. However, the poems didn‘t meet up to expectations. I found myself trying to decipher what the poems were supposed to mean more than I did enjoy them. Highly curious how I would feel about them if she preformed them, since my biggest complaint is I couldn‘t feel her passion as I did with EMDTMM.

My mom loved this book and finished it between my 2 doctor‘s appointments on Wednesday. She said the poems really spoke to her and helped her realize she needs someone to talk to 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽!!! As for me personally, there is too much heartache and talk of unrequited love in these poems, which I am still not ready to deal with only 3 months after the horrible breakup. I am putting it to the side. Today‘s plans have changed-it‘s too rainy 👇🏽

Mimi28 To go to the laundromat and the yogurt I ate this morning gave me a headache. I guess it‘s official I can‘t have ANY dairy. For the #jb people- the lump in my breast is NOT cancerous!! But IS pre-cancerous and needs to be removed ASAP. So basically everything is ok for now. Thanks for your concern and support!! ❤️❤️ Here‘s #Stormy and #Mogwai #catsoflitsy 5y

Benaim captured Internet attention for her poem and performance of "Explaining Depression to My Mother," which is included here. While that poem is definitely the strongest in the collection, her other poems addressing mental illness and struggle are strong and raw, well-observed and honest. Other poetry is not quite as strong, but as a first collection by a poet whose work is more intended to be performed than simply read, it is promising. .

I kept on feeling like she was speaking about something very heart felt to her, but that I had to be there to truly appreciate it. I felt left out reading most of the poetry. There was 1 poem however that REALLY touched me and felt like she was talking directly to me. All-in-all it was a good read. The author is very descriptive in an imaginative way. It reminds me a lot of a Tori Amos song. Enjoy!

I would recommend this one to ppl that don‘t want to give up on new poetry but who have not been that impressed with recent works such as Milk and Honey, The Princess Saves Herself in This One, etc.

I definitely identified with many of these, however with most poetry collections there were several that simply didn‘t resonate.

I've been a fan of Sabrina's since watching her slam poem, "Explaining My Depression to My Mother", a few years ago. That poem spoke to my own experience with mental illness so deeply, that I knew I had to read this book as soon as I could. Every poem was a painful, powerful punch to the heart.

Pickpick

Benaim was one of the first spoken word poets I listened to and I knew I had to read her poetry book. It's real, raw, relatable, and at times humorous. Perfect for a lazy Saturday spent reading.
