This was a fun retelling of Pride and Prejudice set near Brooklyn. I enjoyed how Ibi Zoboi followed P & P's story structure but modernized it. Though I do admit that Zuri got on my nerves a lot and made me wonder what Darius saw in her. Overall, 3.5 stars.

I picked this up a few years ago but never got past the first chapter before abandoning it. I should have trusted Ibi Zoboi and stuck it out, because it ended up being really great. I listened to most of the audio, narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo and she did an absolutely phenomenal job!
Went for a walk and found this in our little free library. Admittedly, I am not a fan of the OG p&p but I will give this one a try.
Retelling of a classic in NY — 3.5 out of 5. I would recommend. This book talks about gentrification, stereotypes, anti blackness, and coming of age with a NY backdrop. I loved the reference to Santeria and Orishas and the rituals. This author took a classic and made it relatable in such a way I felt seen. I think this would be a great Netflix series. MC was a bit whiny, but overall the story stayed on track and the background stole the show.
Sharing this whole page for 2 reasons—the way the father has books that sit next to his recliner makes my soul happy & sad. He believes if you can‘t travel, a book can take you anywhere. Second, every fathers thought process of their daughters never getting married and staying home to be old and grey. Humor, love, heartbreak all in one page. #daddysgirls #nevergrowup #books #dating #wealthymind
This book right here! Let me tell you, so much fun as for a retelling. I will say I am a little annoyed with the MC Zuri, but I get it. I love that Bushwick is not only the backdrop but also a character that I didn‘t know I needed. Bushwick has a life, a soul, & independent of the characters around it. Just my thoughts. #poc #woc #ny #pride #prejudice #retelling
This pic is a great representation of how I have felt lately. I thought Sept would not be that bad this year but it‘s been 2 years since my dad, my bff has passed, & my son‘s bff-we find it hard stll. I have been a little bit of a hermit. I am getting caught up on my letters and reading. Haven‘t been talkative. Buddha & Brusier has been keeping me company.
Happy Pride Month, y'all! I'm ready for another month of #bookspin and #bookspinbingo! @TheAromaofBooks
I'd have liked this more if it wasn't a retelling. At first I liked matching up names & events to P&P but, as usual for me with YA books, I got annoyed at the love lives of HS kids. If this had simply been about Zuri, her sisters, her love for her neighborhood, & her desire to go to college to come back & serve that neighborhood I'd have loved it. And I might not have found Zuri so irritating. As is, my #unpopularopinion is that it's overrated.

Forgot to post my review! I enjoyed this modern, urban retelling of Pride and Prejudice and I thought the author really captured the essence of Brooklyn. This was a pretty quick read so don‘t go into it with high hopes of deeply fleshed out characters as they were pretty one dimensional.
This is on my to read list, and I was lucky to get a copy from #OwlCrate awhile ago. The title itself fits perfectly for today‘s #Pride prompt! #200PnPCovers
This one was just an okay read for me, mainly because I found Zuri (Elizabeth) to be such a brat, especially at the beginning when she is so obnoxiously petty about her sister dating the Bingley character when said Bingley character has done literally nothing wrong. There was a lot going on with this one with discussions about race and gentrification. Some of the updated P&P aspects really worked and some didn't. An okay once-read, but not a new⬇️
4✨Okay unpopular opinion: I don‘t like Pride and Prejudice. However, this book was awesome! Cultural differences are discussed and worked through. Romance is spot on what you would expect and the characters are much more enjoyable to me then the original it is trying to reflect. Read for #YABuddyRead @megnews
#WeeklyForecast - Actually finished Winter Garden last night and am now reading the tagged book (better late than never since the buddy read discussion was yesterday haha). Illusions of Fate has replaced In Other Lands as my #LMPBC read for March, so it will probably be next up. From there, we will see where my random windowsill draw takes me!!

I enjoyed this retelling of Pride and Prejudice. I liked the poetry, the imagery - Janae is the heart of the sisters but Zuri is the shell that protects them. It reminded of The Poet X and I kept looking to make sure that Acevedo wasn't the author. Lo and behold, Acevedo was the narrator. I've only read P and P once, but I am proud to say I recognized the arrogance and the misunderstandings. #YABuddyRead @megnews
Loved the book loved the audio by Elizabeth Acevedo. Thanks for recommending that @AbigailJaneBlog I‘m looking forward to discussion with #yabuddyread next Saturday.
Finished this late last night and cannot wait to discuss it for #yabuddyread I loved the descriptions and Elizabeth Acevedo's narration, which is always brilliant. Funnily enough for a Pride and Prejudice retelling, it was the romance that I didn't like so much. Look forward to hearing your views @megnews
I really enjoyed this P&P retelling, and I‘m looking forward to the #YABuddyRead
These modern Austen retellings set in different cultures than the original British versions really work for me.
Reminder for March #YABuddyRead. If not tagged here, please let me know if you plan to read along. All welcome!!

@sprainedbrain I thought the #PemberLittens might be interested in the Pride buddy read.
A sweet interesting retelling - not a classics fan but enjoyed this one! Read for #ReadHarderChallenge2021 4/5
This was a fun retelling of Pride and Prejudice set against the gentrification of an old neighborhood and the usual relationship angst. I LOVED Elizabeth Acevedo as the narrator! #audiobook #Audible

In a timely update of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Ibi Zoboi skillfully balances cultural identity, class, and gentrification against the heady magic of first love in her vibrant reimagining of this beloved classic. A smart, funny, gorgeous retelling of Pride and Prejudice, starring all characters of color. Audiobook read by Elizabeth Acevedo of The Poet X fame. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Retellings are tricky. I have read some that absolutely sing while allowing the source material to shine through. Unfortunately with this one, I feel the source material actually constrained the book. If Zoboi had P&P in the back of her mind while writing this without trying to explicitly follow it, it would have worked better for me.
Virtual Author Event with Ibi Zoboi tonight at 7pm Central US time. Free event on Zoom for about 1.5 hours. My coworker is moderating and crazy excited!🥳 there are still spots if you can join us!!

I enjoyed this retelling of Austen‘s P&P from a Black perspective and in an urban and more modern retelling. The characters had names that were spin-offs of the original characters, yet were true to themselves and their culture. I could easily pick out the points that were in Austen‘s work, yet these characters also had their own story to tell. At times I rolled my eyes, but then tears would come as they worked out a problem unexpectedly.
Ibi Zoboi is coming to my library as part of our author program to talk about her book!! The program will be on Zoom which means any of you can also attend. 😊 You do have to register, but don‘t need a library card. The event is free. Tuesday, May 11 at 7pm Central US time. Link below. I hope you can come!! 😁
