Heartbreakingly honest, this unflinching memoir of neglect, sadness, pain, and addiction has beautiful prose that stops you in your tracks. It was hard to read but I‘m so glad I did. I understand why it is considered a classic. #BookspinBingo #Roll100 @AllDebooks @TheAromaofBooks

Comment below if you would like this copy of The Liars‘ Club by Mary Karr. If multiple people request it, I‘ll hold a drawing to determine the winner on Sept 23.
I am bailing on this; I just can‘t read about Texas right now. Yes, I realize many wonderful people live there, but. Not for me right now.
Happy b‘day to me! 41 today. Normally I have huge birthday celebrations but this year when I discovered the book fair was on my birthday, my only request was to go alone so I didn‘t have anyone in my ear telling me I already have too many books. Before I was done they announced all books were half price. I paid a total of $10 for these. I have been thoroughly spoilt today. Out for brunch at a new restaurant & spoilt with spanner crab & champagne.
Gonna try hard to remember mornings on the deck with coffee and book come this winter. #summerreading #coffeeandbooks #decklife
Book 17/20 for #BookSpinBonanza! @TheAromaofBooks I'm really hoping to finish the last few before the end of the month.
This book is set close to where I grew up, at least the parts in Texas, so many of the places she mentioned I had very clear images of. I know that others say this book is funny, but I felt more sadness while I was reading it.
Overall, it's a great memoir, but don't go in expecting lots of laughs, it's more heartfelt.
I borrowed this from our public library and love the fact that someone was compelled to correct the spelling of Anahuac. Great read btw.
I find it really hard to critique this, since it is somebody‘s life and traumas. However, I didn‘t really like the book. I had to force myself to pick it up, and I felt like Karr kept me at arms lenght all the way through, while at the same time telling the story of some pretty horrible things happening to her.

I‘m home alone this weekend, and I‘m planning on treating myself to everything I crave, and read a bunch of books. Hopefully the Dewey‘s #readathon tomorrow will help with that 🤞
Today‘s craving was baked sweet potato, with a kind of slaw and dressing, and it was delicious!
Eveb though I‘m about 100 pages into my book, I‘m not really sure what I think about it 🤷♀️

Eating breakfast and perusing my next lot of #NewYearWhoDis reads I picked up from Maitland Library this week. I know the top book wasn‘t on your list @Freespirit but I am super excited to read all of that series. My beautiful French girlfriend @Miss__astrid gave me the crepe recipe. My family and I love them.
I just received a lovely package from @britt_brooke ! Thank you so much, Britt! I‘m looking forward to the books, of course, and I LOVE the bookmark. ♥️🥰🍷📚
Anyone here a product of one or two messed up parents? I feel I like to read of other dysfunctional families, so I don‘t feel alone. Many times I feel better about my own because it wasn‘t as bad as it could have been.
DAY 18: #MaryKarr is one of my favorite female American authors. She writes so beautifully about her life .... do NOT ask her about David Foster Wallace. 🤫
PS. She is totally the basis for the P.G.O.A.T. in Infinite Jest.

Hilarious, heartbreaking, utterly enrapturing. Mary Karr‘s memoir of “an apocalyptic childhood” is full of horrors and calamities but also deep tenderness, great beauty, startling humor, and breathtaking honesty. Her writing is gorgeous and sharp and witty and sparkling. And while her memoir of her childhood is by necessity singular and particular, it brought insight, tenderness, humor and some healing to my memory of my own difficult childhood.
While most of this book left me feeling dizzy and astonished, I never for a moment felt it untrue. Karr writes with such clarity & honesty that EVERY CRAZY MOMENT seemed 100% authentic. A mixture of sadness and hilarity. A true storyteller. My biggest gripe, the jump from 1963 right into 1980. And I wanted more PHOTOS!!! I realize her follow up memoir, CHERRY must be those in between years. #setinthedecadeyouwereborn #pop18
#SeptemberDanes I‘ve only just started this memoir but I get the sense that Mary Karr is definitely a #WarriorWorrier - Man, she‘s been through some crazzzzyyyy 💩😯and these past few weeks I feel like a #KitchenWarrior as I‘ve had some epic battles with my oven 🙄 I tried your challah recipe @Reviewsbylola 🤗🤗🙌🏻they are lookin good & the house smells delicious 😋😋😋

DNF. I was really looking forward to reading this after so many glowing reviews. I made it halfway through. I wish the whole book was about the grandmother.
"That's how God answered my prayers: I learned to make us all into cartoons."
There's something to be said about a memoir written by an actual writer. I know you know what I mean.
Karr's descriptions make you feel like you're in the story, like you knew her family. Her writing is raw, but lovely. I'm a fan.
Although this was a difficult book to read because it was full of a lot of emotions, I recommend it. This is another example of a very resilient, strong woman that has survived your childhood and has become successful.
I'm excited to be spending my Saturday curled up with my Kindle to finish reading this book. I only have 10% left to read and I am not moving until I finish it.
This was a great read. I read Mary Karr's memoirs out of order, having started with Lit last year (also great). This was about her tumultuous childhood in East Texas. It was my July book club read and I finished a little late 😳Still, it's definitely exemplary of the genre. 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #recommensday
#RightNow I'm taking a post-spin book/snack break before getting my little dudes from the #ymca childcare. And getting back to this book which is a fantastic read, but got pushed aside for a couple of weeks. #AugustGrrrl
Good morning! At hour 36 in the #24in48 I was 15 hours in. Less than 9 hours to go and I think I'm gonna make it!
A little late for the 15-hour check-in but over a quarter done with my #24in48 😄Time to put my headphones in, audiobook on, and climb up the hill to the library to pick up some comic books for variety.
12-hour check-in for #24in48 and I'm up with my tea and bookclub read. I can't believe we're a quarter of the way in and I've only got 3h32 under my belt. Sleep is interfering with my goals!
I love when I still find these in my library books 😍
A dysfunctional family is any family with more than one person in it.
My Infinite Jest buddy readers will appreciate this .... inspiration for Tommy Doocey? Yep, I think so. #infinitejestbuddyread
I'm laughing at this so hard because the reason Mary Karr (finally) appeared on my radar was due to the recent #infinitejestbuddyread. I came across their connection while spiraling down one of many DFW rabbit holes.

Just started this tonight. The writing is exquisite. #currentlyreading
Feeling accomplished! Making progress! Finished one book today and should finish this one tomorrow! Why do I pick such depressing memoirs to read???
Feeling determined to finish reading this book this weekend!!! It is very good, but too many interruptions has dragged it out too long. Reading by the pool should help speed up progress....unless I take a nap.
Having a rainy day in Jamaica, so instead of sitting on the beach reading.... I am sitting at the bar reading!! I am determined to finish this book before coming home.
Mary Karr is another example of a resilient, gifted individual that has become successful, but not without pain, heartbreak, and struggle. Jeanette Walls is another. Now, I wonder how many gifted individuals are out their, but don't have the resilience to succeed? Don't find a way to get out? I think about this a lot.
Called for jury duty, so I get some unexpected reading time during the workday. Happy to perform my civic duty and get bonus reading time. Always look on the bright side.
