The Liars' Club
The Liars' Club: A Memoir (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) | Mary Karr
The dazzling, prizewinning, wickedly funny tale of Mary Karrs hardscrabble Texas childhoodthe book that sparked a renaissance in memoir When it was published in 1995, Mary Karrs The Liars Club took the world by storm and raised the art of the memoir to an entirely new level, as well as bringing about a dramatic revival of the form. Karrs comic childhood in an east Texas oil town brings us characters as darkly hilarious as any of J. D. Salingersa hard-drinking daddy, a sister who can talk down the sheriff at twelve, and an oft-married mother whose accumulated secrets threaten to destroy them all. Now with a new introduction that discusses her memoirs impact on her family, this unsentimental and profoundly moving account of an apocalyptic childhood is as funny, lively, and un-put-downable (USA Today) today as it ever was

I am bailing on this; I just can‘t read about Texas right now. Yes, I realize many wonderful people live there, but. Not for me right now.

Addison_Reads I can completely understand this, and I currently live in Texas. 2y
BkClubCare @Addison_Reads - I certainly don‘t mean any offense to the lovely residents of TX but … I posted on gr that I was DNFing because “I can‘t read about Texas” and someone called me on it. Wanted more explanation. I broke a sweat! Too funny. I just don‘t need any more of the Texas “landscape” as a character in my life right now. (edited) 2y
Addison_Reads @BkClubCare I'm definitely not calling you out on it. When I saw your reason, I instantly understood. I'm not a native Texan, and the things currently happening here make my blood boil and keep my anxiety at an all time high. 2y

Happy b‘day to me! 41 today. Normally I have huge birthday celebrations but this year when I discovered the book fair was on my birthday, my only request was to go alone so I didn‘t have anyone in my ear telling me I already have too many books. Before I was done they announced all books were half price. I paid a total of $10 for these. I have been thoroughly spoilt today. Out for brunch at a new restaurant & spoilt with spanner crab & champagne.

BarbaraBB Happy birthday 🎉 it sounds like you made the most of it! And at least you can visit a restaurant. I‘m still waiting for them to open again 🤍 3y

Book 17/20 for #BookSpinBonanza! @TheAromaofBooks I'm really hoping to finish the last few before the end of the month.

This book is set close to where I grew up, at least the parts in Texas, so many of the places she mentioned I had very clear images of. I know that others say this book is funny, but I felt more sadness while I was reading it.

Overall, it's a great memoir, but don't go in expecting lots of laughs, it's more heartfelt.

britt_brooke Such a great read! Her other memoirs - Cherry and Lit - are also. 4y

I find it really hard to critique this, since it is somebody‘s life and traumas. However, I didn‘t really like the book. I had to force myself to pick it up, and I felt like Karr kept me at arms lenght all the way through, while at the same time telling the story of some pretty horrible things happening to her.

I‘m home alone this weekend, and I‘m planning on treating myself to everything I crave, and read a bunch of books. Hopefully the Dewey‘s #readathon tomorrow will help with that 🤞

Today‘s craving was baked sweet potato, with a kind of slaw and dressing, and it was delicious!

Eveb though I‘m about 100 pages into my book, I‘m not really sure what I think about it 🤷‍♀️

Anyone here a product of one or two messed up parents? I feel I like to read of other dysfunctional families, so I don‘t feel alone. Many times I feel better about my own because it wasn‘t as bad as it could have been.

DAY 18: #MaryKarr is one of my favorite female American authors. She writes so beautifully about her life .... do NOT ask her about David Foster Wallace. 🤫

PS. She is totally the basis for the P.G.O.A.T. in Infinite Jest.

#yourbestamericangirl #nofemmeber

Billypar After reading Lit earlier this year, I'm excited to read more Karr! 5y
saresmoore I haven‘t read anything of hers! Do you have a recommendation of where to start? 5y
See All 11 Comments
britt_brooke @saresmoore Yes! Start with The Liars‘ Club. Then Cherry, then Lit. That‘s the order in the time frame of her life. I love her because her writing is literary, but memoir. I think you will like her, too. 🤞🏻 5y
saresmoore Done. Now I only wish I had looked for them at the library sale! Maybe I‘ll be able to talk my kiddos into swinging by tomorrow... 5y

Hilarious, heartbreaking, utterly enrapturing. Mary Karr‘s memoir of “an apocalyptic childhood” is full of horrors and calamities but also deep tenderness, great beauty, startling humor, and breathtaking honesty. Her writing is gorgeous and sharp and witty and sparkling. And while her memoir of her childhood is by necessity singular and particular, it brought insight, tenderness, humor and some healing to my memory of my own difficult childhood.

While most of this book left me feeling dizzy and astonished, I never for a moment felt it untrue. Karr writes with such clarity & honesty that EVERY CRAZY MOMENT seemed 100% authentic. A mixture of sadness and hilarity. A true storyteller. My biggest gripe, the jump from 1963 right into 1980. And I wanted more PHOTOS!!! I realize her follow up memoir, CHERRY must be those in between years. #setinthedecadeyouwereborn #pop18

"That's how God answered my prayers: I learned to make us all into cartoons."

There's something to be said about a memoir written by an actual writer. I know you know what I mean.

12-hour check-in for #24in48 and I'm up with my tea and bookclub read. I can't believe we're a quarter of the way in and I've only got 3h32 under my belt. Sleep is interfering with my goals!

I'm laughing at this so hard because the reason Mary Karr (finally) appeared on my radar was due to the recent #infinitejestbuddyread. I came across their connection while spiraling down one of many DFW rabbit holes.

RealBooks4ever Don't we all have dead lovers? Maybe not. My ex-fiancé committed suicide in 2013. But I digress. I have two of Karr's books on my tbr stack and I should read them! 7y
britt_brooke @RealBooks4ever That's so sad. I'm sorry. ((hugs)) 💔 7y
RealBooks4ever Thanks @britt_brooke ! I'm ok. 💜 7y

Feeling accomplished! Making progress! Finished one book today and should finish this one tomorrow! Why do I pick such depressing memoirs to read???

Feeling determined to finish reading this book this weekend!!! It is very good, but too many interruptions has dragged it out too long. Reading by the pool should help speed up progress....unless I take a nap.

JacintaMCarter @MsLeah8417 I haven't started this one yet, but it's toward the top of the pile! 7y
kristina_with_a_k That book is in my top 5. Factoid: the author hails from the same small Texas town as me, and she went to school with my aunt. 7y

Mary Karr is another example of a resilient, gifted individual that has become successful, but not without pain, heartbreak, and struggle. Jeanette Walls is another. Now, I wonder how many gifted individuals are out their, but don't have the resilience to succeed? Don't find a way to get out? I think about this a lot.

Continuing with the theme of dysfunctional family memoirs, I started reading The Liars Club. Nearly 1/2 way through and I am now a fan of Mary Karr's writing style. She, too, is a survivor of her childhood circumstances. Another resilient female that overcame many challenges and became successful. So many lessons to be learned from powerful, well-written memoirs. Please recommend additional ones that you loved!!!

Reviewsbylola I loved this and her second memoir Cherry! Lit was good too, I just didn't enjoy it quit as much. 7y
Tjackson Thanks! I have Lit and plan to read it. 7y
