My week has been complicated. Here are the five little wins this week:
1. Opened up my Etsy shop with blind book dates - working on the rebrand and getting the word out
2. Loving stickers on Kindle cover
3. Chloe Okoye being a weirdo and making me laugh
4. My son got a honey citrus mint tea for my cough

Of all the books I could finish while waiting outside the laundromat. I respect and want to put into practice the meat of the advice, but some of the personification of inanimate objects got a little more mystical than I strictly appreciate, and I'm sure I'll never understand her folding methods. #nonfiction #tidying

With only one child still living at home, this summer we sold our house of 23 years and bought a much smaller condo. What was once 4 bookshelves of my lovely books has been painstakingly whittled down to just one (albeit packed) bookshelf. Now that we‘re settled, I‘m hoping to get back to reading again and back to Litsy! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ“š

If you want to sign up you can head on over to my libraryโ€˜s website! Itโ€˜s on Zoom but no one will see you, the audience will not be visible until probably the Q&A just FYI.

What sparks joy for me at the beginning of every year is organizing my goodreads tbr. It‘s just an awful never ending project but I know I‘ll feel better when it‘s done. In other news, I still haven‘t read The Institute and I think it is because I cannot commit to losing myself for a full day which is what will happen, always does.

2020 already seems really long.

DrexEdit What do you do to organize your TBR for the year? Do you cut titles? Put them in priority order? I overdid acquisitions last year so this year is going to be more about documenting what I already own. 5y
Reagan @DrexEdit I always cut a lot, and then I update my shelves, I have kobo read and unread and then owned read and unread. I shuffle things around and I also donate a lot of read books so I try to remove those from the owners shelves so that I don‘t keep buying multiples haha. It‘s a work in progress! 5y
DrexEdit @Reagan that's part of the reason I stopped buying! I couldn't remember what I already had. Time for a book buying ban and some organizing for me too! ๐Ÿ˜Š 5y

I got this on a whim but wound up really enjoying it! I find this calm and methodical writing very soothing when my anxiety is putting me on edge a little. Listening to this while I sorted my laundry made me feel very at peace, which is probably just the desired effect! I live in a small single room rn, but have plans to move out this year and I‘m already working on my daydreams and plans for how to make my first flat a wonderful place to live.

โ€The energy of book titles and the words inside them are very powerful. In Japan, we say that โ€˜words make our reality.‘ The words we see and with which we come into contact tend to bring about events of the same nature. In that sense, you will become the person who matches the books you have kept.โ€ Came across this advice while waiting for my new bookshelves at the Container Store. Never thought about this, but there might be some truth to it. ๐Ÿค”

Just as good as the first book! Really loving these Marie Kondo books and I genuinely recommend them to anyone who wants a tidy space. I keep bringing up KonMari irl like a complete weirdo and I don't even care. I really liked the illustrations in this one, which helped me to actually understand what she meant in descriptions of folding.

When the Netflix show was released it set off a lot of heated discussion of Marie Kondo‘s method of tidying up - and it seems to have been misconstrued. By that I mean she doesn‘t say to get rid of all of your books, or to even keep 30 (that‘s what SHE finds to be the best for HER). The worst offenders of nastiness appear to have been readers and I‘m disappointed in how we chose to behave. Also, now I have to read the books to get the real story.

Suet624 People are so judgey these days. They often don‘t even do the research to find out what was said. (edited) 6y
GlassAsDiamonds Drives me insane that somehow it‘s become okay to have a (violent, ardent and almost spiteful) opinion on something they‘ve *never* read It‘s not even what she says in the Tv series! I‘ve got to say that the show was brilliant background while getting ready to move!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 @GlassAsDiamonds I get it because I think most of us have responded to something similarly and, honestly, I can be a bit โ€œyou‘ll pry my books from my cold, dead handsโ€ but mostly that‘s joking. When people who had watched the show in full and/or read the books there was a much deeper discussion and that really highlighted how horrible some people were being. 6y
See All 8 Comments
jpmcwisemorgan @GlassAsDiamonds She actually days to tidy your current home because it shows you‘re capable of taking care of your things and it will bring you the new home that you want/need. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @jpmcwisemorgan which I LOVE as a schema (I also love that old William Morris line of โ€œHave nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.โ€). I think what annoyed most was people reacting without knowing what she actually said, especially some of the journalists for larger newspapers. I understand (but it annoys me) the internet going off half cocked but I hoped for better? 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GlassAsDiamonds Some of the memes were funny but when I saw some of the discussion I thought, really, could you maybe watch the show or read the book - you‘re a reader for goodness sake. Now I want to get rid of everything that doesn‘t spark joy, including relationships. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @jpmcwisemorgan me too (on both counts!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚). I‘m trying to throttle off a little because moving makes me stressed and I‘m close to the โ€œburn it allโ€ stage but I did all my clothes and it felt *fantastic*!!!! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GlassAsDiamonds Sometimes I just want to chuck out all my things but then I realize I have no money to replace them. 6y

I have been hearing alot about #mariekondo lately. Last weekend I decided to check out her show. I watched a few episodes. Pretty entertaining. I don‘t see how she wants to limit the amount of books though. Just the act of seeing a full bookshelf sparks joy in me ๐Ÿ˜„

rwmg Apparently she's been misquoted 6y
julesG @rwmg Yep! 6y
Naj @rwmg @julesG Even I think people overreacted. I don't think she was telling people to get rid of all their books. Just pass on the ones you no longer want to read or didn't like. Don't people do that already? 6y
See All 9 Comments
Nessavamusic Yes it seems the internet is deliberately misunderstanding her philosophy. Because the internet...๐Ÿง 6y
tournevis To be fair, if you're living in a shoebox appartment in Tokyo, 30 books might be all you have space for. None of us live in a shoebox in Tokyo. 6y
mcctrish In her book, she talks about initially getting her books down to 100 but not being happy with that. The ones she had left didn‘t spark joy, but sparked something. So she tried a few different ways to โ€˜keep‘ the books: writing down passages, copying pages and then just ripping pages out and filing them. Destroying the book for anyone else. That‘s when I lost my mind. Shoebox in Tokyo or not. 6y
Blaire I think what‘s missed in most of the conversations is that her method is completely personal. She is happy with 30 books but she is not telling anyone else what to do. She says I‘m her book that the amount of stuff you get rid of or keep is based on what sparks joy for you. It is just actually looking at each book and making a considered decision about whether to keep it. 6y
Moniel @ReadingOver50 Love that! #hilarious ๐Ÿ˜† 6y
