‪You know how when you‘re reading and highlighting passages, and all of a sudden you realize you basically have the whole book highlighted? That‘s me reading Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex by Angela Chen. I‘m learning so much about asexuality, but also about the compulsive and compulsory sexualization of society. Everyone should read this. ‬

Since I‘m a rreeaallyy slow reader, I chose this short nugget for the #finishinaday #Booked2020 prompt. It was a refreshing look at different crossroads in our lives. Patchett delivered a slightly different version as a commencement address at Sarah Lawrence. No earth-shattering revelations (if you‘ve heard one commencement address...), but it‘s always nice to remind yourself that crossroads aren‘t just scary, they can be exciting too.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Love the little bird and good job on the book! ♥️📚👊🏻 5y

EnidBiteEm Such an important question. 5y

Mehso-so

I was excited about this book because three of my favorite authors blurbed it as being basically fantastic. But, it was a bit of a turkey for me. I think the setting, a beach town in fall/winter, could have been used more effectively. I also didn‘t feel that invested in the 1980s MC, which I think is because she was written in third person POV, instead of first person like the current-day MC. It wasn‘t great. It wasn‘t terrible. Just meh.

Karisa Sorry the book was meh, but that is the cutest turkey ever! 5y

I know this is yet another late #BFCr2 check-in, but I didn‘t check in at all last week, and I couldn‘t let that happen again! I got 75 minutes of cardio this week and 30 minutes of stretching. I‘m not hitting my goals, but I‘m still doing more than I did before #BFC, so I‘m happy about that. I also finished the tagged book; my first of four. Not quite what I was looking for, but still a good read. (Pic from a walk this week.) #smallsteppers

TheBookAddict 🙌🏽 That‘s great, keep it up. For me it‘s been about staying active, which is usually what I struggle with. I‘ve had to change my goals a bit, but as long as I‘m moving it‘s all good. Hope you keep on staying active as well. Will you bee joining round 3? 5y
Laughterhp Great job! You‘re still getting out there so that‘s great! Thanks for checking in! 😊 5y
TheWordJar @TheBookAddict Thanks! I came into this just looking to be active more consistently as well. I thought about changing my goals, but I‘m not sure what I‘d change them to right now, and the goals I did make keep me moving, so I still find them useful. I will be signing up for round 3! You? I think I‘m going to see what kind of goals others have to get some good ideas. 5y

Sorry for the late #BFCr2 Week 2 check-in. It was another crazy week! Some unexpected travel and some expected houseguests. Not sure how much cardio I got, but I golfed 18 holes with my husband, which we haven‘t done for years, because kids, so happiness meter filled. (We first met each other on the golf course!) Looking forward to a much slower-paced second half of this week! I hope to finish tagged and pictured book this week. #SmallSteppers

I am so proud of my fellow #SmallSteppers in week one of #BFCr2! You guys have done great! The quote above is my positivity quote I needed to remember this week. I was out of town half of the week, and I only got 60 of my 120 minutes of cardio and 30 of my 60 minutes of stretching in. But it all adds up, right?? I also started The Summer Book by Tove Jansson, and it‘s gorgeous so far!

Let‘s keep it up in Week 2!!

#BookFitnessChallenge #BFC

TheDaysGoBy It definitely adds up! You‘re doing great! 5y
wanderinglynn Great first week! 🙌 But I'm going to rewrite the sentence “I only got ...“ to “I got 60 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of stretching!“ (complete with exclamation point). You are making great progress, you are moving forward, and most importantly, you didn't quit! #powerofpositivity 5y

What a thorough examination of the Golden State Killer case. I do wish Michelle had survived to see him finally captured. I guess my best review of this book would be: After moving to a more rural area, I had been a bit relaxed about shutting my curtains at night. After reading this book, I‘m shutting them all tight and double checking the door locks. An excellent true crime read.

What time is it? Butterfly time! 🦋 I love summer because the monarchs (and other butterflies) return. This spring I uprooted most of two garden plots and replanted them with butterfly-/pollinator-friendly plants. The bees already dig it. I usually don‘t start looking for monarch eggs until June, but I planted lots of milkweed and was rewarded with 14 eggs already. I raised 47 monarchs last summer...already on my way to beating that this year!

I just finished reading this book to my kids, and I‘ve discovered I‘m raising monsters. Not a tear was shed over the totally tear-worthy event at the end of this book. I, however, wept openly. Again. And I knew what was going to happen!

The chapter in the cave is my favorite chapter, perhaps of the whole series. And this is still my favorite book of the series. Such a great setup before the final book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Peddler410 Oh my gosh! My daughter was 8 when I read this to her. I started crying early knowing what was coming. Then, full on ugly crying. I was pacing and needed to take 10. My husband came home from work and Daughter says, “I don‘t know. She‘s been like this forever.” (edited) 6y
Reggie Lololololol, raising monsters. There‘s sometimes I cry just by thinking of Harry Potter. 6y

tjwill Its my favorite book of the series, and the cave chapter is my favorite too. I was so mad that my favorite line of the entire series (from the end of that scene) didn‘t make it into the movie. 6y
TheWordJar @Peddler410 😂😂😂 Sounds like my kids!! I did so well and did not break until I had to say the curse. Then it was full-on. They sat there looking at each while I sobbed and tried to explain that there was only a paragraph left of the chapter, just give me a minute! 😂 6y

I guess my reading attention span is pretty short these days. Maybe that‘s why nothing has really stuck over the past few months. But this one is going well. A graphic novel combined with journal entries. The illustrations are great and detailed (I usually find myself turning back the pages and reviewing them), and combined with the journal entries, it‘s making for a very creepy, atmospheric read.

I have been in such a huge reading slump these past few months. I‘ve tried several books, but nothing seemed to stick and in the slump I stayed. But it seems like the blog entries of Ursula K. Le Guin may be what pulls me out of it! She‘s fantastically wry, and her takes on old age, as well as her cat stories, are a breath of fresh air. So far she‘s been a wonderful reading slump companion.

Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu
post image

#Genji4 also gives us this gem (Tyler translation). “I know I would like such a woman more, the more I lived with her and FORMED HER TO MY WILL.” As I said, quite over the top. He‘s 17! #Genji

GingerAntics WTF?! 6y
Lindy @GingerAntics WTF is right. Part of the appeal of this novel is seeing what outrageous treatment of women Genji will get away with next, while everyone around him is blinded by his beauty. @Daisey @llwheeler @bianca @saresmoore @bookandcat @mhillis @SoniaC @batsy @KathyR @TheWordJar @Faibka @RachelO @CindyMyLifeIsLit @TheWordJar 6y
TheWordJar @GingerAntics I know! As @Lindy said, men, women, children, spirits...everyone thinks Genji is beyond beautiful, so he can do whatever he wants. The fun part is when the author throws in a few asides like “Genji shouldn‘t get away with this stuff, but who am I to say, I‘m only a female.” Even though it was written in another time and place (over 1000 years ago in Japan), reading it through a current lens makes you hope she did that on purpose. 6y
See All 11 Comments
GingerAntics Oh wow, that‘s interesting. The earliest feminist tract perhaps? lol 6y
batsy Spoiler, but in Chap 24 we learn that Genji has not quite matured or changed 😤 and the Washburn translation really makes the discomfort of a particular female character quite obvious. So my feminist heart continues to believe that Lady Murasaki wrestled with some *feelings* regarding social and gender mores at the time. @Lindy 6y
saresmoore I would love to give him the benefit of the doubt for his age, but like @batsy noted, he doesn‘t grow out of it. And anyway, I think it‘s statements like that, which represent pretty widely accepted views of the time. 6y
Lindy “Although women at the time were banned from learning the written Chinese characters used by the court, Murasaki displayed an obvious aptitude for it. She nonetheless worked primarily with kana, the syllabary unique to Japan and the Japanese language. It was known as the language of court ladies, & so it was that women of the time were laying the foundation for Japanese literature, while the men toiled away with their Chinese writings.” 6y
TheWordJar @Lindy Some fascinating facts in that article! Interesting to know that the intended audience was women. Leave it to the women to be writing and reading! ❤️ 6y
TheWordJar @batsy @saresmoore I guess I‘m not surprised that there is no growth for Genji yet. It sounds like he evades all consequences because of his beauty. 6y

I‘m so behind, but on I read! Genji at 17 is over the top. #Genji4 could be a Friends episode—“The One with the Killer Spirit” (with Joey as Genji, of course). As I understand it, Genji takes a lady friend to a haunted house, where she dies (killed by a spirit who “had taken a fancy to” him, according to Genji). Inconsolable Genji. But, before the mourning period ends, he sends some “How you doin‘?” poems to former lovers. Yes? SMH, #Genji!

Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu

1. Before heading to a show on Saturday, my daughter and I tried out a local Korean restaurant. I had beef bugolgi; she tried a sizzling udon bowl (pictured). And we found out we both loved kimchi!
2. I haven‘t bought any books yet this year, but The Tale of Genji was the last one I bought in 2018.
3. 19
4. No
5. No ☹️ Hopefully next year for our anniversary!

“Writers are territorial, and they resent intruders.”

I had no idea Margaret Drabble and A. S. Byatt are sisters. That‘s a prolific pair! Here, Drabble is speaking about not wanting to offend anyone when writing about her relationship with her aunt. I imagine it‘s hard to “write what you know” when you have to call dibs on what you both know.

GingerAntics That would probably cause a few issues, but I would imagine that the spin on any event would be different. 6y
TheWordJar @GingerAntics That‘s what I was thinking. Clearly no two people experience events the same way. I feel that tea set was still up for grabs for Byatt. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics I admit, I don't get the fuss. Even if authors were territorial, no two people experience anything the exact same way. So AS Byatt might still use that teaset and likewise Drabble can write about their aunt. Just look at all the book reviews about one and the same book, we all experience it differently. 6y

GingerAntics I‘m with @JulesG on this. Maybe it‘s more that the sisters were territorial. It‘s sounding a bit like sibling rivalry to me. @TheWordJar I don‘t see why the tea set couldn‘t be up for grabs by either sister. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics Will we ever know? Do you think Stephen King and his sons have arguments over who's allowed to write about the teaset? 😂😂😂 6y
GingerAntics @julesG Stephen King‘s sons are authors? I‘m going with no on that one...not least of all because I don‘t think they had a teaset. lol 6y
julesG @GingerAntics 😂😂😂 Yes. There's Owen King 6y
julesG @GingerAntics And Joe Hill 6y
GingerAntics @julesG I don‘t blame Joe for not using “King” as his last name when publishing. That was gutsy of Owen. Imagine the pressure that would add. Definitely no fighting over the teaset or the ghost stories in the King house. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics I guess it offered Joe the chance to make it on his own (nearly typed Owen) 6y
GingerAntics @julesG true. You see King and think “hm, I wonder.” 🤔 You see Hill and it could be any average Joe. 😏 6y
julesG @TheWordJar Sorry Jessica, for all the comments on your post. 6y
TheWordJar @julesG @GingerAntics Comment away! 😂 I agree it definitely seems more likely sibling rivalry in this situation. As for Joe and Owen, I‘ve always wondered if Joe ever pulls the old “You never could have made it without Dad‘s name” taunt on Owen. I‘d love to be a fly on the wall at a King family holiday! 6y
julesG Make that two flies on the wall. 6y
GingerAntics @julesG @thewordjar make that three!!! 🤣😂🤣 I think instead of dividing up the stories it would be more “I already did that one. Let‘s just see whose version sells more.” 😏 I can definitely see Joe pulling that on Owen. Such a brotherly thing to do. It seems brothers are more playful and one upping than sisters, although I know plenty of girls who can give their brothers a good run for their money. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics That's a very cool idea. Use the same ingredients and a similar recipe, but the outcome is different. So, even if the teaset is the same, the description is different. (wonder if any of the Kings is on Litsy and would be cracking up about this line of comments) 6y
GingerAntics @julesG oh that would be awesome!!! lol 6y
GingerAntics @julesG @TheWordJar JOE HILL IS, IN FACT, ON LITSY!!! 🤣😂🤣 Anyone have the guts to tag him and ask about those King family holidays? 6y
julesG @GingerAntics 😂😂😂 6y
julesG He hasn't posted in 2 years. @GingerAntics 6y
GingerAntics @julesG oh wow, no he hasn‘t. I didn‘t notice that before. Oh well, the speculation continues. 6y

January is National Puzzle month! To celebrate, I‘m reading The Pattern in the Carpet by Margaret Drabble, which is supposed to be part memoir, part jigsaw history. I don‘t know French, so I don‘t know what these endpapers say, but I do know they are gorgeous! #nonfiction2019 #somethingpersonal

2. Currently reading this one with my son
3. No. They never stick.
4. Nothing on Netflix, but Dr. Who on Amazon and Handmaid‘s Tale on Hulu.
5. Of course! 👍

I have never been more pleased with a quiz result. Jane and I would be quite happy together.

I‘m not sure who originally posted the quiz, but if you‘d like to find out which classic author is your soulmate, here it is:

The Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu
post image

I guess I‘m going to relate to Genji through late ‘90s/early ‘00s teen movies. Only a bit into Ch. 2 and already 🙄 at men discussing women. “Anyway, the really fascinating girl is the one of whom no one has ever heard, the strangely appealing one who lives by herself....Compared to someone truly flawless, she of course falls short, but for what she is, she is hard to let go.”

I guess there‘s a prom queen/consort in all of us.

saresmoore I want to punch all of the stupid idiot men in their stupid idiot faces. My translation uses a lot of the word “frigid” and I‘m just appreciating the fact that I didn‘t live during the 11th century! 6y

SoniaC There have been several moments where I am just thoroughly disgusted especially by Genji himself! It‘s going to be a long 1200+ pages! 6y
Faibka @TheWordJar @saresmoore Glad I‘m not the only one that found this passage so infuriating. Hmm I‘m starting to wonder which translation is closer to the original. I‘m behind on reading so trying to catch up! 6y
Faibka @SoniaC I‘ve just finished the 2nd chapter (I know, so far behind 😭) and already think Genji is a total jerk, lol 6y
saresmoore @Faibka Unfortunately, Genji has yet to grow as a person. Well, I suppose he grows more melancholy, but that isn‘t much better... I wonder about the translations, too. There are just so many contextual factors, I‘m sure it would be difficult to determine which is objectively more aligned with the original. 6y
Faibka @saresmoore true about the translations and probably made more difficult when dealing with very old texts. I am hoping that Genji will improve as a read on, lol. 6y
