Evening reading
One of the many benefits of having a Little Free Library is occasionally going out to add a few books and finding a new to you book on the shelf. I love Stephen King, but I've never read any of his Bachman books, so I brought this one inside with me to check out.
#lfl
I'm glad I read this and Desperation within a gasp of one another - the parallels between the two are numerous, and can be fun to spot - but I'm even happier I read this one second this time around. Of the two, The Regulators is a lot more rough around the edges, and having started with an enjoyable read like Desperation makes it a lot easier to keep plodding through its twin. Despite its flaws, it's a fun experiment with a good ending. 4/5
Why why WHY am I doing this to myself?!?!? I need to stop giving King more chances!!!!
Some books are set in a certain time and feel timeless. King's books feel like the movies MST3K would make fun of. I was 18 in 1996 and have ZERO recollection of Hee Haw having been on tv... I think this is one of the hardest things to get past with his writing. It's like talking to that one relative you had who peaked in 11th grade in 1972 and can't talk about anything else...
I've abandoned the SK publication order challenge because I'm only buying secondhand or taking them out of the library and I'm not paying for shipping... 😅 I had this large print copy from a library sale to fit my #bookspin prompt of Published in the 1990s! I have far fewer leftovers from the 90s than I thought & most of them are SK! LOL

As much as it pains me to say anything unflattering about a Stephen King novel, I just didn‘t care for this one. I‘m sure it‘s me and not the author. I couldn‘t get into it. So many characters and so much weird, frantic activity. #MountTBR
This is most likely my most favorite book I have read in my life so far. The story is so absolutely twisted and crazy...but you can't put the book down. It's an intense read! Totally suggest it to mystery and horror lovers!
🤠 i just finished this book which was my #20in4 Readathon goal! I read for 3 hours and 33 minutes
🌵 This is the tale of a supernatural suburban shootout. I really liked the end, but struggled to keep all the characters straight in this story. It was probably my stressful month and not the book‘s fault.

📚 Thank you @Andrew65 !
P.S. I love the cover by Jaye Zimet!
Hooray for #AwesomeAugust! I read the last 41 pages of Hidden Valley Road, and I met my goal of reaching the halfway point of this book!
I‘m still struggling to keep all the characters straight, but I discovered a map of the neighborhood at the front of the book and it‘s been very helpful.
Thank you @Andrew65 !
Now that I‘m back to school I haven‘t had the time to post this picture, but let‘s pretend anyway that I‘ll have time to read:
🌎 The World Doesn‘t Require You by Rion Amilcar Scott for the #KeyWordReadingChallenge
🧠 I finished Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker!
💍 The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory
and
🧺 currently reading tagged book for the #AwesomeAugust Readathon (p. 148/238 goal)
🤩 Wish me luck!

I‘m late posting but I‘m in for the #AwesomeAugust Readathon with @Andrew65 !
I finished the last 41 pages of Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker yesterday.
I also read 43 pages of The Regulators. My goal is to be halfway done by the end of this challenge: 238/475.

I'll admit, I liked Desperation just a bit more than this one, but that's not saying much since I still loved this one.
The mix of TV shows into this world where the people on Poplar St. are being hunted by an ancient evil was brilliantly done. The journal entries were probably my favorite part to the whole story because they added compassion and complexity.

This was really enjoyable the 2nd time around. I did go look up a couple of things in my print copy because I felt I‘d missed something while listening; my problem with audio is that my attention can wander. Frank Muller was a great narrator for this book except for pronouncing Tak as Tok. I found the ending raised a whole lot of questions though! #audiowalk #LosersClub
I only have an hour and 5 minutes left in this book and seriously considered continuing to walk until I finished it, but it would‘ve been dark by then. 😊 I‘m enjoying it more this time around than I did the first time. I went into my library office before my walk and discovered a new work computer! Yay! My old one was so slow that, on booting it, I could go to Starbucks, and it might be ready by the time I got back. #Losersclub #audiowalk
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️While I won‘t give the book five stars, I do think it‘s worth the read. Lots of action, lots of weird, and absolutely wonderful writing. I will say the narrator of the audio was phenomenal. And the covers of this one and Desperation... so cool. #losersclub #buddyread #stephenking @DGRachel
First time reading this one as well. I am very glad I read this back to back with the Desperation. It really was a good experience. #losersclub
For some reason, the creepy stars align when I am reading Stephen King. See that creepy looking building in the top pic? There‘s a scene in this book where some characters are walking through the woods and something happens. As I was listening to this scene, I ran into this building. I walk there ALL the time; I have never seen this building. Tak did it! Btw, SK pronounced Tak as “tack” narrating Desperation; Frank Muller says “tock.” #audiowalk
#firstlinefridays @ShyBookOwl True to King... the first line: Summer‘s here, Not just summer, either, not this year, but the apotheosis of summer, the avatar of summer, high green perfect central Ohio summer dead-smash in the middle of July, white sun glaring out of that fabled faded Levi‘s sky, the sound of kids hollering back and forth through the Bear ⬇️
This one‘s a little strange like all of King‘s books but I love the descriptions: “...to hope that maybe he wasn‘t going to do it, that he‘d had a change of heart at the penultimate moment, that last little vestibule of maybe not before the endless hallway of too late, and then...”. #losersclub #stephenking #buddyread
5 hours left in this book, and I‘m enjoying the reread. See those two skies in the picture on the top right? They were right across the street from each other at the same time. The sky in the top picture was even darker than it looks, but I felt if it started raining on the side I was walking on that I could just cross the street. #audiowalk
So I‘m over 3 hours into this book. It didn‘t start out with action like Desperation; instead, we see citizens of an Ohio suburb just going about their business on an ordinary summer day. When the action does start, though, it‘s intense. See the “No Bikes” sign in the pic below? Can you guess what I saw on that track? Yep, you‘re right — a bike. #LosersClub2021 #audiowalk
Just finished The Regulators for the #LosersClub2021 February buddy read.
Finished rather quickly but I'm available for discussion on it, as always.
My thoughts on this one..

This month‘s book is #TheRegulators! Grab your copy, get reading, and check back around March 18th (probably a few days later, because I‘m a forgetful ghosthost) for open discussion! #LosersClub #StephenKing #StephenKingInOrder #KingFromTheBeginning #ConstantReader #ReadAlong #BuddyRead #BookDiscussion #ghosthostpost
Sitting here reading, eating a pudding cup and being watched intently by our pug, as per usual. His stomach is like a void that cannot be filled. 😂
Started The Regulators tonight, the #LosersClub2021 read-along doesn't start until tomorrow but I like to get ahead a little bit and I'll be available for discussion throughout it anyway! 😊

Woo hoo!!! For #bookmail! Looking forward to this next pick for #losersclub2021
Just a reminder that February‘s #LosersClub read is #Regulators! Put your library holds in now, search your shelves, or buy a new copy, and check back on or about February 19th when we begin reading this one. Discussion will be in March. #StephenKing #RichardBachman #BachmanBooks #StephenKingInOrder #KingFromTheBeginning #ConstantReader #ReadAlong #BuddyRead #BookDiscussion #ghosthostpost
Pretty sure this is the most violent SK I‘ve ever read. So many people die, and that disturbed me enough to think this wouldn‘t make it past 3.5⭐️but in true King fashion, you end up perplexed and mesmerized by the story. Glad this was a buddy read bc the end baffled me in the best possible way. #Ohio Bachman book. On to Desperation!!
💀💀💀💀
#SuperSeptemberReadathon @Andrew65
Goals:
Finish: The Regulators, Evvie Drake Starts Over, Hiroshima, and The Traveling Cat Chronicles
Start: Desperation
Let‘s see if I can handle that!!
Thanks for tagging me, @Andrew65 📚❤️
This might possibly be the weirdest SK book I‘ve read so far, but I‘m still giving it a pick because I think all of his books should be read at least once. My complaints: too long (big surprise) — that‘s about it really. I love the way he writes people and he does it so well. I need a break for a few weeks before I attempt to read Desperation. 3.5⭐️ rounded up to 4.
#StephenKing
1) Yes, esp. movie tie-in.
2) It was an ordeal. I bought a used copy online as I wanted the Mark Ryden cover art that combines with Desperation to form one picture. The description was "like new." It was a far cry from that condition, but after talking to the seller I was sent a replacement copy in better shape.
3) NPR, CNN, Daily Show, Colbert, Washington Post.
4) Wake up immediately. Usually between 7-730.
5) @readordierachel @Leftcoastzen
Reading The Regulators immediately after Desperation might not have been fair 😕
I flew through Desperation, creeped out and really enjoyed it. This was just OK for me.
The concept/relationship between the two books seemed like it would be amazing, but what I was hoping for/expecting just didn‘t pan out in the Regulators.
I wonder how I would have felt about this one had I read it first. 🤔
#expandedDT #booksandbooze #dogoflitsy
The last few stragglers for my #expandedDT tour. I kept finding Desperation, but of course, I was insisting on having them both in the same edition. Finally picked up Desperation at the library sale succumbing to the idea that I wouldn‘t find The Regulators (because I‘m not into ordering it for $35).
BUT 2 days after buying Desperation, I came across The Regulators at Value Village for $5 👏
#booknerdthrills ❗️#matchingedition for a deal ❗️
Thank you so much George @Trashcanman that was so sweet of you to send this to me. I'm looking forward to reading it and I love the cover 💚
Building my Stephen king hardback collection. Still got a ways to go but it‘s going lol what say you? What do you think I most definitely need to grab?
I read this immediately following Desperation, and they were both really good. They are classic King, in that they are creepy, gory, and just scary! Once again, I felt agitated for the characters. I think that is his gift, that he makes the reader care about the characters and then cranks up the suspense. I always feel anxious when I read his books, and I mean that in a good way. #MountTBR
There's something about summer in Maine that always leads me to reading some Stephen King.
The Regulators was a solid read. The tone of the book, the various character perspectives reminded me of The Tommyknockers (which while I enjoy does go one forever). The Regulators however, moved along at a good pace, keeping me invested and ended at a clear point.
