Pickpick

I'm glad I read this and Desperation within a gasp of one another - the parallels between the two are numerous, and can be fun to spot - but I'm even happier I read this one second this time around. Of the two, The Regulators is a lot more rough around the edges, and having started with an enjoyable read like Desperation makes it a lot easier to keep plodding through its twin. Despite its flaws, it's a fun experiment with a good ending. 4/5

Why why WHY am I doing this to myself?!?!? I need to stop giving King more chances!!!!

TheNeverendingTBR Can you explain? 1y
IamIamIam @TheNeverendingTBR Sure! Doublemint is a chewing gum & they used a set of twins as a marketing gimmick. It just feels so out of place reading this 30-something years later. 1y
5feet.of.fury I don‘t think it was out of date at the time this book came out. 1y
See All 11 Comments
IamIamIam @TheNeverendingTBR AND it's off-putting to international readers like you!!! It's just jarring and for me, it's taking away from the story. 1y
5feet.of.fury Are you feeling that way because the pop culture references make it less timeless? 1y
IamIamIam @5feet.of.fury In 1996, it would have been more relatable but it goes back to my original comment about how dated his work feels. So many other books are set in a certain time that feel timeless. All these pop culture references are hard to relate to this many years after they were introduced. 1y
IamIamIam @5feet.of.fury Haha, I was apparently answering you as you were asking the same question... lol, I've been very vocal about my love/hate relationship with King and this was another chance I took to let him redeem himself. I'm always extra critical when it comes to his books. 😆 I'm a little bitter after all these years!!!! LMAO 1y
Read-y_Picker Let it go! Just consider it historical fiction at this point lol. 1y
IamIamIam @Read-y_Picker Haha, fair enough... King always gets my hackles raised, though!!! 1y
TheNeverendingTBR I'm aware of that. You can still buy Doublemint in the stores here. 1y
Reggie I love this book. It gave teenage me nightmares back in the day. I read this one and Desperation back to back. Loved them both. 🖤🖤🖤Also reminds me of that rap song-“Regulators!!!! Mount up! It was a clear black night and a clear white moon. Nate G was on the streets, trying to consume.” 1y

Some books are set in a certain time and feel timeless. King's books feel like the movies MST3K would make fun of. I was 18 in 1996 and have ZERO recollection of Hee Haw having been on tv... I think this is one of the hardest things to get past with his writing. It's like talking to that one relative you had who peaked in 11th grade in 1972 and can't talk about anything else...

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage That is tough 😔 1y
Kappadeemom Welp, you didn‘t miss anything. Hee Haw was just as bad as it sounds 1y
IamIamIam @Kappadeemom 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Spectacular, Melanie!!!! 1y

5feet.of.fury I getcha I saw your 2nd post first but that makes sense. 1y
CSeydel I was 21 in 1996 and I grew up watching Hee Haw 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
IamIamIam @CSeydel Maybe it was a regional thing? 1y
CSeydel Yeah - I‘m sure I watched it in syndication but it was definitely on some channel throughout the 80s 1y
IamIamIam @CSeydel I just looked it up on Google and that was definitely not something I remember!!! LOL, I did watch Laugh-In and I guess they're similar but Hee Haw is a bit more country? A bit is being nice, though... HAHA 1y
CSeydel Do you remember in the song Punk Rock Girl where he says the line about the girl dressing like Minnie Pearl? She was a regular on Hee Haw. Fun fact 😆 1y
CSeydel Oh yes. Hee Haw was EXTREMELY country 1y
IamIamIam @CSeydel HAHA, I do know who Minnie Pearl is and it makes sense that she was on Hee Haw!!! 😂 1y
Megabooks I‘m two years younger than you and I do remember Hee Haw, but I grew up in the South. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ it‘s hard to write a timeless popular fiction book. I enjoy the throwbacks to childhood, but each reader is different. If you‘re not enjoying it, bail. #TooManyBooksTooLittleTime 💯💯 1y
IamIamIam @Megabooks 🤣🤣 Good call!! It's just that King gets me all riled up... we've got a sordid history!! I can skim it but I think I may have just grown out of his style and I need to realize that's okay!! Lol 1y

I've abandoned the SK publication order challenge because I'm only buying secondhand or taking them out of the library and I'm not paying for shipping... 😅 I had this large print copy from a library sale to fit my #bookspin prompt of Published in the 1990s! I have far fewer leftovers from the 90s than I thought & most of them are SK! LOL

As much as it pains me to say anything unflattering about a Stephen King novel, I just didn‘t care for this one. I‘m sure it‘s me and not the author. I couldn‘t get into it. So many characters and so much weird, frantic activity. #MountTBR

SqueakyChu It‘s okay not to like everything by Stephen King. He is such a prolific author. I am a big Stephen King fan, but his work I liked the least was “the Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon”. My favorite? Probably Duma Key or Hearts In Atlantis or The Green Mile...or (well, I guess I loved lots of them!) 3y
NatalieR @SqueakyChu Thanks for the validation! 😊 I also have lots of favorite SK books too…11/22/63, Lisey‘s Story, The Shining, Bag of Bones… 3y
SqueakyChu @NatalieR Oh!! The Shining!! How I loved that book! It scared the bejeezus out me one night while I was listening to the audio version and driving home in the dark. And how I laughed at the Jack Nicholson movie version of that book! Thanks for the memory. ❤️ 3y
NatalieR @SqueakyChu 😂 That sounds like a terrifying experience! I‘m glad you enjoyed a trip down memory lane. ❤️ 3y

This is most likely my most favorite book I have read in my life so far. The story is so absolutely twisted and crazy...but you can't put the book down. It's an intense read! Totally suggest it to mystery and horror lovers!

🤠 i just finished this book which was my #20in4 Readathon goal! I read for 3 hours and 33 minutes
🌵 This is the tale of a supernatural suburban shootout. I really liked the end, but struggled to keep all the characters straight in this story. It was probably my stressful month and not the book‘s fault.

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #TBRDeckofCards

I'll admit, I liked Desperation just a bit more than this one, but that's not saying much since I still loved this one.

The mix of TV shows into this world where the people on Poplar St. are being hunted by an ancient evil was brilliantly done. The journal entries were probably my favorite part to the whole story because they added compassion and complexity.

CaffeineAndCandy I think all of the characters from Desperation were in the Regulators , at least the characters had the same name as the characters in Desperation. Yet I couldnt find the correlation of the two stories aside from the fact that the mine and the city of Desperation were not far away from the city in which the story takes place. The characters were different ages and had different occupations from those in Desperation. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 3y

This was really enjoyable the 2nd time around. I did go look up a couple of things in my print copy because I felt I‘d missed something while listening; my problem with audio is that my attention can wander. Frank Muller was a great narrator for this book except for pronouncing Tak as Tok. I found the ending raised a whole lot of questions though! #audiowalk #LosersClub

TheNeverendingTBR I'm glad you enjoyed it even more, I'm also looking forward to crossing another King book off my list soon! ⚡ 3y
KathyWheeler @TheNeverendingTBR I like rereading King because his work usually holds up and I notice different things. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is the only book on this list that I haven‘t read before. (edited) 3y
TheNeverendingTBR @KathyWheeler I've not read that either, the baseball aspect of it puts me off I guess 🤷‍♂️ (I'll get to it one day though, being a completionist and all.) 😎 3y
KathyWheeler @TheNeverendingTBR I‘m so weird about baseball. I absolutely love baseball movies — I have a whole collection. Baseball itself though? Meh. I started The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, was bored, and never finished. I hope to have a different experience this time. 3y

I only have an hour and 5 minutes left in this book and seriously considered continuing to walk until I finished it, but it would‘ve been dark by then. 😊 I‘m enjoying it more this time around than I did the first time. For some reason, the creepy stars align when I am reading Stephen King. See that creepy looking building in the top pic? There‘s a scene in this book where some characters are walking through the woods and something happens. As I was listening to this scene, I ran into this building. I walk there ALL the time; I have never seen this building. Tak did it! Btw, SK pronounced Tak as “tack” narrating Desperation; Frank Muller says “tock.” #audiowalk

Reagan Oh that‘s interesting! I never listened to the audiobooks but always read it as tack. 3y

#firstlinefridays @ShyBookOwl True to King... the first line: Summer‘s here, Not just summer, either, not this year, but the apotheosis of summer, the avatar of summer, high green perfect central Ohio summer dead-smash in the middle of July, white sun glaring out of that fabled faded Levi‘s sky, the sound of kids hollering back and forth through the Bear ⬇️

Tattooedteacher , Bear Street Woods at the top of the hill, the tink! of Little League bats from the ballfield on the other side of the woods, the sound of power- mowers, the sound of muscle- cars out on Highway 19, the sound of Rollerblades on the cement sidewalks and smooth macadam of Poplar Street, the 3y

So I‘m over 3 hours into this book. It didn‘t start out with action like Desperation; instead, we see citizens of an Ohio suburb just going about their business on an ordinary summer day. Pretty sure this is the most violent SK I‘ve ever read. So many people die, and that disturbed me enough to think this wouldn‘t make it past 3.5⭐️but in true King fashion, you end up perplexed and mesmerized by the story. This might possibly be the weirdest SK book I‘ve read so far, but I‘m still giving it a pick because I think all of his books should be read at least once. My complaints: too long (big surprise) — that‘s about it really. I love the way he writes people and he does it so well. I need a break for a few weeks before I attempt to read Desperation. 3.5⭐️ rounded up to 4.

Melkyl I read them back-to-Back. I did prefer Desperation, but I read it first. It was a little strange having the same character names in the two stories in different roles. 4y
JenlovesJT47 @Melwilk I didn‘t know which one to read first! I‘m looking forward to reading Desperation soon. Ironically, it was my sister‘s hatred of this book that made me want to read it more 😆 4y
KathyWheeler I liked Desperation better too. I‘ve read most King books twice though while I‘ve only read Desperation and The Regulators once — when they were first released. It‘s probably time to revisit them. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Great review, yes, very, very weird. I wonder if Bachman books are stranger than the regular SK books. I‘m going straight on to Desperation, not sure if that‘s the right call but I‘m afraid I‘ll forget key points if I don‘t (edited) 4y

1) Yes, esp. movie tie-in.
2) It was an ordeal. I bought a used copy online as I wanted the Mark Ryden cover art that combines with Desperation to form one picture. The description was "like new." It was a far cry from that condition, but after talking to the seller I was sent a replacement copy in better shape.
3) NPR, CNN, Daily Show, Colbert, Washington Post.
4) Wake up immediately. Usually between 7-730.

Prairiegirl_reading My answer to number one was going to be no but I wasn‘t thinking of movie tie-ins. I hate that! 4y
Reggie #2 gave me nightmares when I read it in my teens. I had no idea about the covers. But I did read this one and Desperation back to back. 4y

Ruthiella I‘m totally guilty of judging the movie tie-in covers! I won‘t buy ‘em but somebody must! 4y
Amandajoy Yep, definitely judging movie tie-ins. 4y
readordierachel Those covers are cool. I really like Mark Ryden's stuff. 4y

Mehso-so

Reading The Regulators immediately after Desperation might not have been fair 😕
I flew through Desperation, creeped out and really enjoyed it. This was just OK for me.

The concept/relationship between the two books seemed like it would be amazing, but what I was hoping for/expecting just didn‘t pan out in the Regulators.

I wonder how I would have felt about this one had I read it first. 🤔

madamereadsalot1 I love Desperation too. I tried to start this one right after finishing Desperation but couldn't get into. I put it down figuring I needed a break between. I hope to go back to it, but I don't know if I will. 5y

The last few stragglers for my #expandedDT tour. I kept finding Desperation, but of course, I was insisting on having them both in the same edition. Finally picked up Desperation at the library sale succumbing to the idea that I wouldn‘t find The Regulators (because I‘m not into ordering it for $35).
BUT 2 days after buying Desperation, I came across The Regulators at Value Village for $5 👏

Thank you so much George @Trashcanman that was so sweet of you to send this to me. I'm looking forward to reading it and I love the cover 💚

KathyWheeler Do you have Desperation as well? They are kind of companion novels. 5y
Mdargusch Great cover! 5y
BookwormAHN @KathyWheeler I don't but I have heard that. I'm rather intrigued to see how the Bachman vs King writing will play out in each. 5y
Trashcanman I'm so glad it arrived, you are most welcome 🤗💖 5y

Pickpick

I read this immediately following Desperation, and they were both really good. They are classic King, in that they are creepy, gory, and just scary! Once again, I felt agitated for the characters. I think that is his gift, that he makes the reader care about the characters and then cranks up the suspense. I always feel anxious when I read his books, and I mean that in a good way. #MountTBR

Pickpick

There's something about summer in Maine that always leads me to reading some Stephen King.

The Regulators was a solid read. The tone of the book, the various character perspectives reminded me of The Tommyknockers (which while I enjoy does go one forever). The Regulators however, moved along at a good pace, keeping me invested and ended at a clear point.
