Full Dark, No Stars
Full Dark, No Stars | Stephen King
The acclaimed #1 New York Times and undisputed King of Horror Stephen King delivers five unforgettable short works, two of which will soon be adapted for film, and which Booklist called raw looks at the limits of greed, revenge, and self-deception. Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up 1922, the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife Arlette proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness. In Big Driver, soon to be a major Lifetime movie starring Maria Bello, a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself. Fair Extension, the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. In the last of the tales, soon to be a major motion picture, Darcy Andersons husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips and his unsuspecting wife looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. Its a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends A Good Marriage.

While I liked each individual novella in this collection, when considered together, there's no escaping the commonality between them. This is a collection of four very cynical, dark, and - at times - difficult to read stories. There isn't much hope to be found in its pages, but it remains entertaining despite its grimness. 4/5

A Good Marriage: What if your partner wasn't the person you thought they were? How would you react? What choices would you make? While this idea is far from fresh, King's take on it feels much more so, and is a tense read from start to finish. 5/5

blurb

Fair Extension: A rather cynical and bleak take on the classic "deal with the Devil" story that unfortunately doesn't get much time to breathe or go anywhere of particular note. 3/5

Big Driver: This is a brutal story, with some of the most visceral and jarring depictions of assault I've read. The upshot is the unrelenting catharsis of the back half as one of the most relatable protagonists I've seen King conjure gets down to the business of revenge.

1922: Yet another corn-adjacent murder romp from King! Joking aside, this is a pretty solid novella, and the narrator's blunt delivery makes for some fascinating reading right out the gate as he recounts his terrible deeds. 5/5

Erinsuereads A good marriage is one of my all time favorite short stories. 1922 crept into my dreams. I suppose that is what he wants 🤣🤣 1y
Bklover @ErinSueMreads I agree completely about A Good Marriage. I love that story. That one and The Mist (from Skeleton Crew) are my favorites! 1922 is a good one too. 1y
bthegood @Bklover @ErinSueMreads same here - 1922 and A Good Marriage my two favorites in this collection - the other two were so/so for me - love The Mist (with book ending not movie ending) and I loved the short story The Reach (my favorite) also from Skeleton Crew I believe. 1y
BarkingMadRead @ErinSueMreads @Bklover @bthegood yes! A Good Marriage and 1922 are definitely my faves and I love the Mist! The ending of the movie irritated me lol 1y

🎧 King is king of the novella/novelette! Revenge, murder, death, kill, jealousy and the innate ability to be completely un-self-aware & truly not know the person you‘re with!

There are some truly gruesome descriptions & details here & possibly a trigger warning so you might want to check the publisher‘s summary or some spoiler reviews.. Nice cover.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3

Reggie This is one of my favorite books from him. Each story was horrific. 2y

I know as King fans we‘re supposed to love everything he does but after his accident he did stuff we didn‘t think was great as the older King stuff. (Not true, just took some to realize how good it was.) But this was the first book I remember thinking-Oh yes, Old King. Lol. 4 novellas, all pretty dark. My favorite one is “Fair Extension.” It‘s about a man dying of cancer who sees a man on the side of the road who makes a bargain to give him 15👇🏼

Reggie extra years of life in exchange for 15% of his income and he has to pass the bad luck onto someone he truly hates. And the man chooses his “best friend.” The cancer disappears and his life turns around and the King goes into horrific detail about what happens to the other man‘s life. My favorite comedian Katt Williams talks about not worrying about the haters in your life because sometimes the real haters in your life are the people closest 👇🏼 2y
Reggie to you. This story bugged me then and still bugs me now. Check this book out. All four novellas are bangers. 2y

Reggie @KathyWheeler me too. I think about the other 3 stories a lot. 2y
Reggie @vivastory Thanks man! Have you heard of a movie called Dashcam? It came out this past year. Totally bonkers. My dad and I watched it and we liked it. Total horror comedy. I laughed and jumped a lot. 2y
vivastory I'm glad to hear your opinion on Dashcam! I haven't seen it, but I really enjoyed Host by the same director & was curious about Dashcam. Host was the first horror movie made during the pandemic & was pretty impressive. Are you going to check out the new Hellraiser? I just returned from the movie theater about 10 minutes ago from seeing Pearl. Definitely one of the best movies I've seen this year & even better than X. 2y
Reggie I‘m a bit behind but X and Pearl are definitely on my list. 2y
Reggie And yes to the new Hellraiser. In fact that‘s my post tomorrow. The Hellbound Heart. 2y

A collection of dark and harrowing novellas from the King himself. I almost wanted to cover my eyes and not read anymore at some points, but of course that would be impossible!

What made these novellas even more horrifying was the realistic aspect of them - no scary clown or supernatural elements here, oh no!

Not for the faint of heart

This is Stephen King‘s best short story collection, in my opinion. These stories didn‘t really scare me, but they are creepy and weird (in a good way). The creepiest, downright freakiest one was “1922.” TRIGGER WARNING: in one of the stories, the protagonist is raped and a supporting character describes her own rape. These weren‘t depicted gratuitously; they were sympathetically portrayed. An advisory is necessary, though.

1. Probably the tagged book tho there are so many. This is a v creepy collection of 4 novellas. Pet Sematary is up there, too.
2. Protagonist: Johnny Smith from The Dead Zone
Antagonist: Pennywise (from IT) is just such an iconic image of childhood terrors.

Oh boy this was Dark - I'm not sure what I was expecting but nothing quite so bleak. However, I did really enjoy it and A Good Marriage was my favourite story. The only negative point I have is that I just don't love the reading experience of short story collections. That's not the books fault though just a preference of mine.

Really enjoyed 3/4 of the stories in this one (Big Driver was just ok). I like how they force you to think and imagine what you, as an ordinary person, would do in these extraordinary situations. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys the occasional dark piece of fiction #stephenking #fulldarknostars

bookishbitch Big Driver was made into a movie that I thought was well done. 6y
KatieanneF @bookishbitch Interesting! I may have to check it out. I always like seeing movie adaptations. I just didn‘t love that one- I feel like a bad feminist for thinking so, but I didn‘t find her empowering and I thought adding in the other woman‘s story felt like padding for a basic rape/revenge plot. The other stories just caught my attention in a different way 6y
bookishbitch Hmm I never considered it an empowering women's story. For me it was more of a murder mystery and revenge story. Though it began as a survival story. 6y

I listened to the first novella in this collection “1922” but didn‘t really care to continue. I was intrigued by the basic plot line and found elements of it unsettling (a farmer covers up the murder of his wife) but I just didn‘t like how it was told. The narrative conceit is a letter, so too many parts were summarized for my tastes.
