August | Tracy Letts
32 posts | 24 read | 11 to read
One of the most bracing and critically acclaimed plays in recent Broadway history, August; Osage County a portrait of the dysfunctional American family at its finest - and absolute worst. When the patriarch of the Weston clan disappears one hot summer night, the family reunites at the Oklahoma homestead, where long-held secrets are unflinchingly and uproariously revealed.

August was a struggle month for me, on all fronts. It also was just kind of a month full of average reads, which for me doesn't mean they're bad but rather I could just predict where the stories were going. These were all books on my TBR pile but only Trail of Lightning and How to Clone a Mammoth stand out. Here's hoping September goes better for me across the board.

August was not a good month for reading quantity. I only completed two books. Life, work, family, and health were all a bit crazy, and I've been so so exhausted every day.
But, the ones I did read were pretty good. I'm definitely continuing on with both series.

My most successful month (ever), but back to work on Monday so productivity will fall off a cliff.

This total was helped by several Readathons and Buddy / Group Reads (think I had six on the go at the same time at one point). Thanks to all those who helped me along. 👍😍

Sad to see my August Trip is over! What am I going to do now! 😢

vkois88 That's incredible 6y
DivineDiana Did you take a speed reading course or something?!? Incredible month!!! 👏🏻📚👏🏻 6y
Andrew65 @vkois88 Thanks, I‘m pretty pleased! 6y
Andrew65 @DivineDiana Thanks 👍No my reading speed hasn‘t changed 😂 Just devoted a month to reading and on average read 8 - 10 hours every day and read an average of 459 Pages a day. If anything I read a few books which were slower reading and had more words on a page. Helped by no work during August and being away in the motorhome, although did have to do a few days prep work for school which starts tomorrow. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @Allydanielle88 It helps that our children are grown up & flown the nest. In essence we have cut out all tv & chosen to read rather than watching the tv. Also take part in a lot of Buddy Reads and Group Reads which force me to have to read to keep up, especially where I set the questions! 😂 I also do a lot of Audiobooks now during commutes or when too tired to physically read and this makes a BIG difference. Taking part in all readathons helps 2. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @Allydanielle88 The amount I have read has built year on year over the past 6 or 7 years or so, due to sites like Litsy and Shelfari. Before that believe it or not I was only reading a couple of books a month and sometimes not even that! 6y

First week of august I was in a deep book slump, but Ms.Marvel (and graphic novels/manga in general) came to the rescue 😍
I've read just 4 (of the six) books for #makemereadit.. Moby Dick and The Perfume are still on my TBR!

🌟My top picks:
They both die at the end
Love and other consolation prizes
Manga classics : Jane Eyre
The prince and the dressmaker

Cinfhen Oh wow 😲 my head hurts just looking at that list! @SledgeReader I‘m going through some family stuff at the moment and not sure I‘m in the proper head space to delve into Children Of God. Please begin without me & I‘ll catch up when I‘m feeling more focused. 6y
Andrew65 Sending positive thoughts @cinfhen 😊 6y
Andrew65 @MinDea August is always my most productive reading month. Needs to be Sarum is the equivalent of 4 or 5 books! 6y
Andrew65 @Yeah_I_Read I‘m looking forward to this one. Only read one so far that is about William Marshall‘s Parents. I love SKP, one of my all time favourites! 6y
Andrew65 @MelissaSue81 Look forward to seeing it. 6y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Already got my copy of Circling the Sun but not started it yet. 6y
Cinfhen Thanks @Andrew65 much appreciated and happy reading to you!!!! 6y
SledgeReader @Cinfhen @Andrew65 I understand about the family. I‘m actually super distracted at the moment for the same reason - all good stuff but time consuming all the same. What do you think about starting mid August and running through mid September? Or compressing it into three weeks instead of four? Understanding you may still be tied up. Looking for feedback/guidance. 6y
Andrew65 @SledgeReader @Cinfhen If I can give my thoughts. Why not advertise it to start Mid August (17th August), it‘s quite a long book (512 Pages) so I would leave it as four or five sections. If any help willing to give support at the time if it is needed. Hope things settle down for both of you - that was me in June and early July due to work issues. Stay strong. 😊 6y
SledgeReader @Andrew65 @Cinfhen Andrew, I‘m so glad to have your thoughts. That‘s kind of the direction I was thinking about. Is your copy hardback? My trade paperback is only 436 pages. I can see this makes a big difference for readers. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @SledgeReader No, not got my book yet, I checked on Amazon and it said the paperback had 512 Pages. 6y
Cinfhen Thank you so much @SledgeReader @Andrew65 for your comments and suggestions 😁I like the mid August start date and, Andrew, if you‘d like to helm the ship with Sara that would be fabulous 🙌🏻 6y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen Always happy to help out - although not possible in June and early July due to severe work commitments. Hope things settle down for you. 😊 @SledgeReader (edited) 6y

I can hardly believe that we're at the end of summer! August was a decent reading month for me with eight books read. On to September! #AugustWrapUp

This was a Morning Glory flower that was the largest bloom of the year. I took the pic right after a rain shower, and we had a lot of those last month. Hopefully, September will be drier. 🤞🏽

Today may not have gone exactly as I had planned, but I am sure looking forward to having a clean slate this month. I'll be honest - I've been struggling a lot lately. I think a mix of little things on top of being away from hubby and him being very busy. Restarting bullet journaling in an effort to manage my time better. Trying to get a move on studying for my last set of boards. Trying to feel better. Here's to a new month 🥂

#dysfunctionalfamily It doesn't get much more dysfunctional than the Weston family in August: Osage County, one of my very favorite plays. I am currently writing a grad school paper comparing the family in this to the family in Arthur Miller's All My Sons. Love both plays, but I really want to be finished so Thanksgiving relaxation can start! :)

Not a pleasant family, so not a pleasant read. But that doesn't mean it wasn't good. I could see people I know in the characters, but as nicer versions. May have to see the movie. This was my play for the #readharder2016 Challenge.
