Honestly, the least he could do. 💁🏼♂️🐎
Such a fine line between skillfully ratcheting up the tension and dragging it out too long. The pace of westerns is naturally slower in a time before modern communication or transportation, but there were still chapters in here that felt like filler. I liked seeing the husband squirm, but the comeuppance felt pedestrian, contrasting the supernatural elements in the story. Of the reveals, one I didn't see coming, one wasn't satisfying. ⚠️Ableism
Honestly, the least he could do. 💁🏼♂️🐎
I‘d pan this book, but I DID finish it, so there was a spark there. My main issue was a shaky premise, which made the whole story sort of unbelievable. And for a story that hinges on sympathy for the MC, you hardly get to know her at all. Very MEH, in the end.
Picked this up at the OLA conference…um…some years ago now and thought it might make a good next read. Thrillers aren‘t my usual kind of thing, but with fantastical and fairytale and mystery elements, it sounds intriguing…
Pretty damn good progress if I do say so myself ???
Finished this in primarily a day, I believe. My best sum up is a comedic western cum fairy tale with horror elements. I wasn't sure at first but fell in love with all the characters and enjoyed the pacing and flipping perspectives. Malerman omits what one might say could be a climatic scene to explain it after. I feel this fits with the "magic" scene that pops up throughout.
#WondrousWednesday @Eggs Thanks for the tag! 😃 🙌 ❤
1. Yes! Both, but since Covid, 😷 I've only buddy read virtually. The pandemic altered our lives completely. 😩
2. I LOVE when they challenge you to read a book turned into a movie. That's my favorite. I also love reading gothic, thrillers, horror, and romance arcs. If the challenge has something to do with finding clues, I'm game.
3. Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman
Who wants to play? 😃
More horror! More BookOutlet! 😁
This is a very pretty book! I haven‘t read it yet but I like the Josh Malerman books that I have read.
I look forward to reading (listening to) this.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
3 stars for the book but 5 ⭐️s for the cover! I really do love it 😁
A woman suffers from a curious condition where she slips into a coma at times and appears to be dead. And she‘s married to a man that‘s interested in her $$$ a lot more than he is in her. You can imagine what could happen when you combine these two ideas. Not a bad read at all but not a favorite either.

I got this beauty in the mail today. Starting on it right away. @allureofbeauty @Bianca @ImperfectCJ
#LMPBC
@Bianca the tagged book is on its way for #lmpbc, via 2-day Priority Mail. Sorry for the delay. Time keeps getting away from me!
I found this one unsatisfying, but I don't want to say much because it's an #lmpbc book. I will say that I felt the world building was sloppy. It's an alternate reality so doesn't have to conform to actual history, but it should have some internal logic to it. And Malerman makes the weird and ineffective choice to leave out the most important scene. So, unsatisfying.
This will be on its way hopefully very soon. I‘m sorry I‘m late in sending it. November wasn‘t kind to me in the least. I did email everyone the other day, hopefully you all got it. @Bianca @ImperfectCJ @Hazel2019
#unburycarol #joshmalerman
I believe we start on the first of November? Are we all ready to start our books @Bianca @Hazel2019 and @ImperfectCJ 👻
5 ????? This was excellent! Loved it. At first I thought I was reading Peral with the multiple comments of Pig ? "Poop" aka S--- I liked the character Outlaw James. All the characters were interesting and slowly each one became part of the story as I read. It has horror, love, humor, and gory. What a fun #Halloween #Horror read. This takes one of my Free spots. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks
My choices. I‘m really leaning towards Unbury Carol but figured I should add another choice in. If these really don‘t work I can pull something else 🖤
Also whichever we choose for any of us I was thinking it might be fun to each pick a color for a pen for our annotations.
What do you think @ImperfectCJ @Hazel2019 and @Bianca
#LittensDressedInBlood Today‘s prompt is Orange 🍊🧡🎃
I had this on my TBR for years before finally reading it recently, and I loved it! Quirky, funny, and unique, this orange covered book ticked off all my boxes!
Recommending this to anyone looking for a great read this month, and it's not very gruesome at all. #TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon2021 #Scarathlon @Clwojick
A paranormal-western, sleeping beauty retelling. It was almost a so-so, as I never love paranormal reads. But as far as fairytale retellings go, it was completely unique, and I enjoyed that aspect. #FairytaleReadingChallenge @Charityann
My favourite day of the month is when my #AbominableBook subscription arrives 😀
#bookmail #incoming #tbr
I gave this 3 stars which I guess makes it a so-so. I enjoyed it and read it very quickly, but I think it kind of missed the mark in some ways. I wonder if I‘d have been more satisfied if it was longer (and had less chapters from dirtbag Dwight‘s perspective)? Anyway, it was okay and as usual the cats provided great company. #huey #catsoflitsy
After many hours spent on video calls with family over the past 3 days, we‘re finally getting some time to relax. I hope all of you are enjoying this strange holiday season to the fullest. This book‘s been on the #tbr for awhile, happy to finally get into it. #lennox #catsoflitsy
Carol dies often - at least her strange condition that has her falling into a death-like state makes it seem. Her husband has decided to take advantage of her most recent bout, but a love from Carol‘s past rushes to stop him. +6 #TeamHarkness #Scarathlon2020 #Screamathon2020 #BookSpinBingo
🎧 The premise of this story sends a shiver down my spine: A woman who is prone to sudden death-like comas is buried alive!
But oddly, it seems to be devolving into mediocrity— not helped by the audio narration (Dan John Miller).
It‘s not so bad that I‘ll DNF it, but I am managing my expectations.
Wrapped this up today. It wasn't my favorite. I like Malerman as a writer, but the storyline just didn't grab me. 3 stars. #Scarlathon2020 #TeamHarkness #bookspinbingo
@TheAromaofBooks @StayCurious
Started this audiobook this morning. Being buried alive... sounds terrifying for sure. #bookspinbingo #Scarlathon2020 #TeamHarkness
Josh Malerman is definitely a talented writer. Am proud to own a sexy signed copy. This one is set in the old time west. Carol has a medical condition that puts her in temporary comas where she appears dead. Her husband plots to bury her alive during one of these spells as no one else has knowledge of her condition. Or so he thinks... #MountTBR
A Wild West Sleeping Beauty. Carol has temporary comas. Only her husband, maid, and an outlaw ex-lover know. When she falls into a coma, her husband claims she died to steal her wealth. And a three way race is on to bury her, wake up, or rescue her.
Frankly, my big issue with this is that it didn‘t get nearly as creepy as I expected. I wanted more horror, less gunslinging. And Sleeping Beauty retellings are hit and miss anyway, for me. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
I read this for my topics bookclub, because it was touted as a retelling of sleeping beauty and we are reading #FairyTaleRetellings this month.
Also, it‘s by the author of Birdbox, which I really liked.
There are some terrific characters: Carol herself, who all her life has had spells where she seems to die, but is just in an extremely slowed state. Her lost love Moxie, a famous outlaw. Smoke and Rot, two true villains.
A dark tale indeed!
#bookreport @Cinfhen
I missed my report last week due to my annual dance festival. So far this month I‘ve finished these three. All were good, but none were stellar.
I‘ve got 4 in progress 😬📚! Unbury Carol and Vassa in the Night are for my bookclub meeting next weekend. Our theme this month is Fairytale retellings. The Scent Keeper is a Buddyread and Problems for Owl Post, my postal Bookclub.
I hope to have lots of reading time today!
Magic, gunslingers, western, most evil villain, buried alive. It‘s not the Bird Box, and it‘s not for everyone but I loved it!
Nothing seems to be holding my attention lately. Just keep bouncing from book to book leaving them half finished. Hoping there‘s something in this stack to hold my attention. I grabbed a few off the top and am hoping for the best. #teamslaughter #scarathlon @Clwojick
It took me awhile to get into Unbury Carol but once I did I really enjoyed it. Thanks again @Gissy 👻

#BBRC #yeahbaby Book Swap @LibrarianRyan
Buoyed by compelling characters, the book nevertheless fails to take its bizarre premise to its macabre potential, creating an overall disappointing experience.
Thank you so much @gissy I feel so spoiled! I love everything, especially the It stocking. That is fantastic. I know just where I'm going to hang the print. I'm so excited to those books. And We Sold Our Souls has those lovely black sprayed edges. Glad I waited to make my tbr for October and thanks for indulging my Pennywise obsession 🖤🎈🖤
Thank for hosting the #ScreamathonSwap @4thhouseontheleft
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I never thought I would enjoy a "outlaw" book, goes to show that one is never to old to try something new.

I really want to get to this one soon!! It sounds soooo good!! Thank you again my sweet friend @Avanders 😘
I loved Bird Box and A House at the Bottom of a Lake and I wanted to read more by Malerman. Unbury Carol was an interesting story but it just wasn‘t for me.
I had to stop by the library today and found these two hanging out on the book sale shelf. I felt it irresponsible to leave them there, so they came home with me.
I‘ve heard good things about both. Which one to start with?
I have anxiety coupled with complex trauma and PTSD, books have always been a getaway from my own mind and also a calm in the storm that is me. I have an inspection for the townhome I rent today, and I don't do well with strangers in my home. Alas, I am quite worked up. I haven't slept well, so I've made myself some comfort food, grabbed my comfy quilt, and this book by one of my favorite authors, hoping to ease my mind over the next few hours.
I started this in print and struggled to get in to the story, so I switched to audio. Something about hearing the different voices made this retelling of sleeping beauty work for me. I still liked Birdbox more though. #LitsyAtoZ #U #Booked2019 #FairyTaleRetelling
That cover! This was a great read,a supernatural Western set in an unnamed world devoid of much of the cultural baggage of the real Old West but full of tricksy outlaws, comatose heroines (asleep but not helpless) and some over the top villains. I loved the characters, and parts of the book had a great Stephen King vibe to me.
