Contemporary retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The best parts happened when Zuri, female protagonist, performed her poetry.

This was a fun retelling of Pride and Prejudice set near Brooklyn. I enjoyed how Ibi Zoboi followed P & P's story structure but modernized it. Though I do admit that Zuri got on my nerves a lot and made me wonder what Darius saw in her. Overall, 3.5 stars.

#BookSpinBingo #19 @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Zuri annoyed me so much that it really brought down my overall rating for the book. I was also confused about why she was so against her sister dating the Bingley character - it felt like she was being a brat for no reason other than to cause drama! 13mo

I picked this up a few years ago but never got past the first chapter before abandoning it. I should have trusted Ibi Zoboi and stuck it out, because it ended up being really great. I listened to most of the audio, narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo and she did an absolutely phenomenal job!

Retelling of a classic in NY — 3.5 out of 5. I would recommend. This book talks about gentrification, stereotypes, anti blackness, and coming of age with a NY backdrop. I loved the reference to Santeria and Orishas and the rituals. This author took a classic and made it relatable in such a way I felt seen. I think this would be a great Netflix series. MC was a bit whiny, but overall the story stayed on track and the background stole the show.

This book right here! Let me tell you, so much fun as for a retelling. I will say I am a little annoyed with the MC Zuri, but I get it. I love that Bushwick is not only the backdrop but also a character that I didn‘t know I needed. Bushwick has a life, a soul, & independent of the characters around it. Just my thoughts. #poc #woc #ny #pride #prejudice #retelling

This pic is a great representation of how I have felt lately. I thought Sept would not be that bad this year but it‘s been 2 years since my dad, my bff has passed, & my son‘s bff-we find it hard stll. I have been a little bit of a hermit. I am getting caught up on my letters and reading. Haven‘t been talkative. Buddha & Brusier has been keeping me company.

wanderinglynn {hugs} 💚 I empathize. I lost my dad 12 years ago. I can say the pain eases over time, but it did take a while. And yet every once in a while, I still get that punch to the heart at random times. QEII said it best, “Grief is the price we pay for love.” 2y

I'd have liked this more if it wasn't a retelling. At first I liked matching up names & events to P&P but, as usual for me with YA books, I got annoyed at the love lives of HS kids. If this had simply been about Zuri, her sisters, her love for her neighborhood, & her desire to go to college to come back & serve that neighborhood I'd have loved it. And I might not have found Zuri so irritating. As is, my #unpopularopinion is that it's overrated.

bookandbedandtea The narration by Elizabeth Acevedo was superb and probably made me like this more than I would have if I'd read it in print. 2y

Forgot to post my review! I enjoyed this modern, urban retelling of Pride and Prejudice and I thought the author really captured the essence of Brooklyn. This was a pretty quick read so don‘t go into it with high hopes of deeply fleshed out characters as they were pretty one dimensional.

This one was just an okay read for me, mainly because I found Zuri (Elizabeth) to be such a brat, especially at the beginning when she is so obnoxiously petty about her sister dating the Bingley character when said Bingley character has done literally nothing wrong. There was a lot going on with this one with discussions about race and gentrification. Some of the updated P&P aspects really worked and some didn't. An okay once-read, but not a new⬇️

4✨Okay unpopular opinion: I don‘t like Pride and Prejudice. However, this book was awesome! Cultural differences are discussed and worked through. Butterfinger Is it right to say that her community is becoming gentrified? I can relate. I hate change and Zuri was going through too much changes at the same time. It knocked her off base. It made her think. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @Butterfinger I definitely agree with your point about Zuri, but I think it also shows just how much she cares about the people in her area. It is not just the buildings and the pavements, its the people and the feeling that the neighbourhood that Zuri wants to keep. 2y
megnews @butterfinger @AbigailJaneBlog the neighborhood is defiant changing and the more it changes, the more the people Zuri loves and counts on being there are being forced out. Gentrification pulls apart long lasting support systems. 2y

Butterfinger Zuri defines pride in her "hood", the people who make up her community. She knows everyone and what they are doing at certain times. It's a comfort to know this and now she is leaving her comfort zone. She can't rely on her people. She can't appear to be too proud or face the same treatment as Darius. She has to be humble and allow people to know her and maybe, just maybe, the new community will share some of her mores. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @Butterfinger I would disagree here. I think Zuri, when confronted with Darius actually feels the need to be more proud of her community and her upbringing in comparison to him. If she is not openly proud, and happy, in her neighbourhood, gentrification is justified 2y
megnews @Butterfinger @AbigailJaneBlog I see both sides. I do think Zuri has a lot of pride in and commitment to her community. It defines her in many ways. But definitely when someone looks down on something you value, it is easy to go on the defensive and turn a blind eye to problems because you don‘t want to admit their could be some truth the other person sees. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @megnews I think you're probably right there 2y

AbigailJaneBlog I find in this book particularly, it's a negative to their relationship. Darius's manners and upbringing prevent him from calling out his family when they are awfully rude. He also corrects Zuri's grammar at one point which is just ??? 2y
megnews @AbigailJaneBlog I think it‘s so hard to cross social classes in a relationship. It‘s difficult in regular life to understand the motivations people in other classes have for the decisions they make, let alone in a relationship. Parenting would be particularly hard I think with both parents wanting to instill different values in theirs kids. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @megnews yea I completely agree. It's even hard with platonic relationships. When I was at uni almost all of my friends had very different backgrounds to me, and I see none of them anymore lol 2y
mrp27 I think both the grandmother and Zuri are made of the same strong stuff that make them both strong people. I think it‘s difficult to cross social classes but it‘s certainly possible. In this story I think it‘s helpful both characters were raised to have dreams goals and ambitions. 2y

megnews @Butterfinger yeah the grandma really bothered me. Downright rude. 2y
mrp27 I was really hoping the grandma would redeem herself. I understand Zuri‘s first impressions, it‘s honest but it didn‘t mean she had to act on those first judgements. Same with the Darcy family. 2y

Butterfinger I think Zuri has grown by overcoming first impressions. She knows that she can't assume based on predetermined biases. The boy from her neighborhood was a sexual predator. The rich boy shared her standards of living. No, I think she is too mindful to become too big. 2y
megnews @Butterfinger I agree she grew in regards to realizing you can‘t judge a book by its cover in regards to people. You have to get to know them better. So much of Zuri‘s values are wrapped up in her neighborhood and community that I don‘t think she‘ll grow too big for it. She knows she wants to grow but also stay connected. 2y
mrp27 Agreed Zuri grows by learning about herself and learning to judge less and let go of some pride. She also grows by expanding her physical world by leaving her neighborhood. 2y

I enjoyed this retelling of Pride and Prejudice. I liked the poetry, the imagery - Janae is the heart of the sisters but Zuri is the shell that protects them. It reminded of The Poet X and I kept looking to make sure that Acevedo wasn't the author. Lo and behold, Acevedo was the narrator. I've only read P and P once, but I am proud to say I recognized the arrogance and the misunderstandings. #YABuddyRead @megnews

Retellings are tricky. I have read some that absolutely sing while allowing the source material to shine through. Unfortunately with this one, I feel the source material actually constrained the book. If Zoboi had P&P in the back of her mind while writing this without trying to explicitly follow it, it would have worked better for me.

Librariana I think my rating might be on a different edition (?), but I felt the same way about it, Holly. Gave it a so-so. If I remember correctly, to me it felt like she was following P&P along pretty closely up to the halfway point, and then it went in a different direction? (cont'd ⬇️ ) 3y
Librariana I felt like the idea of tackling gentrification as well as economic differences (again, if my memory serves me right) were strong subjects and thay they might've been better served had P&P, like you said, been in the back of her mind. 3y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana Exactly! I loved her book American Street, so I know she can tell a strong original story. I‘m bummed she tried to do this. It went off the rails early for me. When the boys moved in across the street and the close friend said their husbands had arrived? Zuri‘s in high school! That just seemed so absurd to me. 3y

I enjoyed this retelling of Austen‘s P&P from a Black perspective and in an urban and more modern retelling. The characters had names that were spin-offs of the original characters, yet were true to themselves and their culture. I could easily pick out the points that were in Austen‘s work, yet these characters also had their own story to tell. At times I rolled my eyes, but then tears would come as they worked out a problem unexpectedly.
