Her mother's dying request takes Mary Yellan on a sad journey across the bleak moorland of Cornwall to reach Jamaica Inn, the home of her Aunt Patience. #HitchToScreen

I am so glad I finally read this one (actually listened to it)!

It was moody, atmospheric, riveting, fast paced, emotional. It had me second guessing who was “good” and “evil.” Like Mary I shouldn‘t doubt myself.

The ending was super touching ❤️ As persons we long for a human connection, not just ties to the land.

This is my third du Maurier story and I‘ve loved them all!!! (Rebecca and Frenchman‘s Creek)

JenlovesJT47 Yay! I loved it too 💚 4d

‘The coachman tried to warn young Mary Yellan away from the ruined, forbidding place on the rainswept Cornish coast..‘

A nice gothic tale, this was dark and atmospheric. I enjoyed it. Good writing and details.

I finished it a day late but I enjoyed this one. I went back and forth between audio and kindle. It‘s very melodramatic with strong Perils of Pauline vibes. Perfect escapist and atmospheric read. Like others have said, it was extra fun to be reading it at the same time of year as in the book. My winter break is coming up and I‘m going to try to talk hubby into watching the 1939 movie with me.

#hitchtoscreen @JenlovesJT47

JenlovesJT47 Yay! 💚 7d
Sace @JenlovesJT47 Will we be reading Rebecca? That‘s one I‘ve always meant to read. 7d
JenlovesJT47 Yes, Strangers On A Train is the one we‘re reading starting today, then I‘m going to do Rebecca after the next book probably. There are 3 Daphne Du Maurier books and I want to space them out a little bit. Rebecca is so good!! 7d
Sace @JenlovesJT47 I had started Strangers on a Train but decided to put it on pause and listen to Jamaica Inn. I‘m glad I did. It was enjoyable. I‘ll start back with Strangers this week. It‘s also really good. Can‘t wait for Rebecca! 7d

The first #HitchToScreen book made for a quick (& surprisingly seasonal!) listen that was really well performed (despite the book being read by a man, when I would have expected a lady since the book is from Mary Ellen‘s POV!). After the death of her mother, she travels to the Cornish coast to live with her aunt & uncle at the titular inn. But she quickly realizes that the inn has a dark reputation & soon she strives to unmask its secrets!

JenlovesJT47 How funny that a man narrated it. I can‘t wait to watch the Hitchcock movie this weekend. It‘s one of the few I‘ve never seen. I also came across a remake made a few years ago and got it from the library. Glad you enjoyed it! It made me go out and get the rest of Daphne‘s books! 🤓 2w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I will say that he was quite dramatic, so once I got over the oddness of his gender, I really enjoyed it! I am excited to watch, too— I‘ve also never seen it! Which one of hers will you read next? 2w
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS My Cousin Rachel has been on my TBR forever so I‘m hoping to start that one in January. I‘ve read The Birds & Rebecca (both are excellent) but that‘s about it! 2w
See All 19 Comments
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 My book club read My Cousin Rachel a few years ago— I really liked it a lot! And I read Rebecca so long ago that I really should re-read it! I went through a Gone With The Wind phase in junior high and the librarian recommended Rebecca and The Thorn Birds— and something else… now I can‘t think of it! But I am due to revisit both!! 2w
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS well Gone With The Wind happens to be my favorite book of all time (and top 3 movies of all time!) — I read it in high school, then rented the movie from Blockbuster and my love of classic movies was born 🤓 2w
JenlovesJT47 And Rebecca is so good! I had already seen the movie about 20 times before I read the book but the book is excellent. Would have been even better if I hadn‘t seen the movie first. 2w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Of course it‘s one of your favorite books, book twin!! 🤣🥰 My paperback copy literally fell apart (I also love the late sequels like Scarlett) and I tried to get a play production of it going in 8th grade! I saw the movies first for both of them, but I feel like the differences kept it interesting! 2w
JenlovesJT47 Lol I sneaked the sequel, Scarlett, into a book report in high school (went to a Christian school so it was very taboo 😳), I love it. Haven‘t read it in a very long time. 2w
Sace I‘m currently listening to an audiobook narrated by Barbara Rosenblat and it‘s excellent. I want to try the audiobook for Rebecca next. There was one with a male narrator, but luckily I found one with a female narrator. 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Hah! I am seeing my mom for some Christmas shopping in a little while so I‘m going to ask her if she remembers telling me that I was too young for these books (but then enjoying reading-watching the movies with me!) Plus there‘s the Rhett Butler one and I would definitely be up for a buddy read of all of these, too! I even have some GWTW ornaments on one of my Christmas trees! 1w
TorieStorieS @Sace Oh man! I am jealous of the female narrator find! Where do you usually get your audiobooks? Our house is out-of-district for the library so now I mainly use Audible, Chirp or Spotify. 1w
JenlovesJT47 Ok you‘re definitely my book twin. I have boxes of GWTW ornaments. Fancy ones that I got from some club or something. And the collectors plates. We should definitely do a buddy read! There‘s GWTW, Scarlett, Rhett Butler‘s People, one about Mammy I can‘t remember the name of, and a few others. Would be fun! 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 For sure!! I think I have a sheet of stamps, hahahaha! And I don‘t think I ever read the one about Mammy (though it‘s on my shelves!). Let‘s definitely do a buddy read!! Goodreads has this list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/117759.Gone_With_the_Wind_Sequels 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Some of them might not be worth reading, but it‘s a longer list than I expected!! 1w
JenlovesJT47 Ooh, down the rabbit hole I go! 1w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 🤣🤣🤣 1w
Sace @TorieStorieS my library uses Hoopla. While it rarely has the newest books, I can still find some gems. 1w
Sace @TorieStorieS I take that back. I found it on Cloud Library, another service my library uses. 1w
TorieStorieS @Sace Thanks! I know Hoopla, but Cloud Library is new to me! 1w

I hesitate to say this is a holiday read, though it is set over Christmas. 😳 Most definitely a gothic tale with all the gothiness to be expected. I loved this production, the narrator was nearly perfect.

Not at all crazy about the BBC screen cover. 🥴 Makes it seem like a bodice ripper.

It has Wuthering Heights vibes, a novel I love. So that might be a word of caution for those who aren‘t fans. Both works are of their time & style.

Cathythoughts Great review! We read it for Bookclub a couple look ever years ago. Those moors , I loved it. 🖤 (edited) 3w

I‘m glad we chose this for the first #HitchToScreen buddy read. This book has such a haunting atmosphere & I love her writing style. Mary is the main character but the moors themselves are a character & I love the gothic vibes. I‘m really looking forward to watching the movie. I‘ll be working on getting the reading schedule organized for the next year. I hope everyone is enjoying it so far! 5⭐️

After her mother dies and she loses the farm, Mary Yellan moves in with her aunt Patience and uncle Joss at the Jamaica Inn. Mary meets Joss's brother Jem and the Vicar. Something shady is going on at the Inn and Mary is going to find out what. Overall, the writing is beautiful, the story is good - I just could not connect right now.

AllDebooks Yay, so thrilled you still love it. I hate rereading a book, then struggling to see what I liked about it. Well done on ✔️ off so many prompts 👏😀 2y
Librarybelle I really need to read this one 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 2y
Bluebird @Librarybelle me too! I‘m embarrassed to admit I‘ve not yet read anything by Daphne du Maurier. She‘s been on my radar since my college days but somehow I never got around to any. 2y
Librarybelle @Bluebird The only I have read is Rebecca, which is so good! I have a copy of My Cousin Rachel which I hope to read sometime this year. 2y
Bluebird @Librarybelle Those 2 and Jamaica Inn are the ones I keep hearing about. I am going to make a point of reading at least one before years end! Thanks to you and @jenniferw88 for prodding me to finally read Daphne du Maurier! 2y

TheAromaofBooks I found Jamaica Inn to be a bit too depressing for my taste, but I'll be interested to hear what you think!! 2y

jenniferw88 @TheAromaofBooks I loved it the first time round, but it was at least 12 years ago now and I know I like the Gothic genre. It helps that I have relatives in that part of Cornwall so have actually visited the inn! 2y
Cinfhen I liked Jamaica Inn 😁you‘re knocking out lots of prompts with just 2 books🙌🏻 2y

1. To me, it‘s historical fiction if the bulk of the action takes place at least fifty years before the book was written. In any case, I prefer historical fiction that takes place before I was born.
2. I don‘t remember how much of the tagged book takes place in autumn, but it definitely has a dark and spooky vibe to it.

Bailedbailed

I didn‘t like the narrator of this audiobook, and I didn‘t like how weak Aunt Patience is.

The tagged book shares the top spot with Just Mercy. I saw someone already posted about the latter, so I‘ll go with Daphne du Maurier. Loved this classic gothic read.

Tagging @BiblioLitten if you wish to play.

????? Another classic in the bag. There is nothing I love more than a good old fashioned gothic tale. Jamaica Inn gives you all of those things. It felt very much like a mixture of Brontë and Collins. The mystery of Collins Lady in White and Bronte‘s Jane Eyre (a personal favorite). The mysterious, dark inn, the moors, the heather the crashing sea all things I love.

Du Maurier is one of my favourite authors. I love her atmospheric dark writing. This was a good one and can‘t wait for the next!

KristiAhlers Ohh just stacked. I agree she‘s the queen of the gothic read. 3y

Thanks to these Litsy folks for today‘s prompt:

##SAVVYSETTINGS

@Eggs
@AlwaysBeenALoverOfBooks

Today‘s Prompt: REMOTE INN

The book was a perfect Du Maurier book.  The entire book was suspenseful, tense, and had a sinister tone.

If you don't know Du Maurier's writing, you will want to.

Enjoy and read JAMAICA INN when you can.  5/5
