It‘s real then! I‘d heard the rumours. A Penguin vending machine in the main foyer of the station, between the ticket machines and Starbucks.

What I didn‘t know was that profits are shared with the local indie bookshop, which is great!

Spotted on LinkedIn....

This is a fascinating 10 minute video about ‘hidden‘ books in films and TV programmes...

Loved the it about ‘The Holiday‘ when the narrators says that we‘re all guilty of putting a few too many books on our TBR pile! Yup....

Do they even still make these? I think they are what started my #ReadingObsession in earnest.

These books solidified my identity as a reader when I went on a mission in school to find as many as I could to read. I didn't want to be left out of whatever magic made these orange books a "classic."

Clever marketing that worked (at least on me?‍♀️)!

Hey everyone,

As we all shop for swaps (or early Christmas shopping), I just wanted to remind everyone about Penguin Rewards.

For every Penguin and its imprints books you purchase you get 10 points. Get 120 points get a fee book up to $30.

I have already got one free book (Golden Son in hardcover) and am just two books away from my next fee book.

https://account.penguinrandomhouse.com/rewards/

LibrarianRyan Things I have learned:
-it takes between 1 and three days for points to go from Pending to Active
-You may get an email requiring you to send proof of purchase. This is normally for indie bookstores, as all the big ones are listed. (also for Bookoutlet)
-when you hit 120 points you get an email with a code to redeem your points.
-Not every PRH book is eligible for points and not every book in the catalog can be redeemed with points (but most can)
5y

LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn @SamanthaMarie @sprainedbrain I put in all my books when I buy them because PRH has so many imprints I can‘t remember them all. The only pain is when I get an email to send a pic of my receipt. It‘s always for Bookoutlet. But they have sped things up. 5y

Popped into Exeter to do banks and boring stuff. They put up a Penguin Books plaque at the railway station last year. From there, a brisk walk up to town (up being the word; brisk, not so much), past the Marks & Spencer building, which has a statue, I think of Britannia, on the roof. Now I‘m off to a pilates class. 😳. What on earth is with this exercise malarkey??! #litsywalkers

Seen this on Litsy and it's as good as I hoped it would be. Books are organised chronologically and by region / language for modern books. This should give me lots of ideas for my lifetime reading list.

I‘m so excited about this! It‘s so many of my favorite things at once!
See @suvata ‘s original post for sign up link!
I just crashed group f‘s party! #LMPBC

arubabookwoman Oh Yay! I was worried no one else would be interested in that category. Now to contemplate possible reads. @Butterfinger 6y
jmofo @arubabookwoman there are have so many wonderful books to choose from! What are some of your favorites? 6y
arubabookwoman So many—I have a (long) potential list downstairs. I‘ll check it over and get back to you tomorrow. 6y
See All 37 Comments
Butterfinger @arubabookwoman @jmofo I am so excited. I need to see when Jane Eyre was written to see if it qualifies. I've not read it yet and I've been wanting to read it. 6y
sprainedbrain @jmofo @arubabookwoman @Butterfinger I‘m crashing the classics party, too! 😃 6y
jmofo Welcome @sprainedbrain ! @Butterfinger Jane Erye is squarely an 1800‘s book! I haven‘t read it in a few years, so I wouldn‘t mind a re-read. 6y
arubabookwoman I‘m so glad our group is complete. I originally suggested 20th century classics, thinking those would be easier to read, but I am totally open to classics from any time. I‘d love a chance to reread Jane Eyre too. So, are classics from any time acceptable to all, and do we want to suggest a page limit? @jmofo, @Butterfinger, @sprainedbrain 6y
Butterfinger @jmofo @arubabookwoman @sprainbrained I'll find a 20th century classic. The Great American Read had just published the top ten novels and Jane Eyre and Lord of the Rings were the only 2 I had not read. I was trying to complete the list. Lol. But, LOTR will be too thick. I'll find something. 6y
Butterfinger @jmofo @arubabookwoman @sprainedbrain I found one that has been on my tbr list. This is my first time doing this Do we share titles so we don't get the same book? 6y
sprainedbrain @Butterfinger @jmofo @arubabookwoman shall we exchange emails now or wait until the official emails come? Might be easier to chat about books via email or text/iMessage. My email is jenni.d.langford@gmail.com 😃 6y
arubabookwoman I‘ve only done this once before, but we did each give a proposed choice (or a few choices), and people commented, and then we each chose one. There were no duplicates, and I think there are so many choices out there we can work it out. I‘ll probably post a list of several possibilities in a day or two to see if anyone has strong feelings one way or another. My email is dejaq50@hotmail.com. @Butterfinger, @jmofo, @sprainedbrain (edited) 6y
Butterfinger @arubabookwoman @jmofo @sprainedbrain tammy.dayton@mcdowell.k12.nc.us 6y
jmofo Ahhh! @arubabookwoman @Butterfinger & @sprainedbrain I don‘t know why I had thought 19th Cent Classics was proposed! I‘m good with classics from any time. I will have a tough time deciding on one, so I‘ll need a day or so to think on this. 6y
arubabookwoman Since I said I would list some of the classics on my list of potentials, here are some: Catch 22; Adventures of Augie March; Song of Solomon; them by Oates; The Manor and the Estate by I.B. Singer; Sometimes a Great Notion by Kesey; The Golden Notebook by Lessing; Doctor Zhivago; Edith Wharton; Willa Cather; Group Portrait With Lady by Boll; Sons & Lovers; Buddenbrooks; Testament of Youth; Midnights Children; & I could go on. 6y
arubabookwoman @jmofo, @Butterfinger, @sprainedbrain I listed some books in the comment above, but not enough space to tag you there.🙇‍♂️ 6y
Butterfinger @arubabookwoman @jmofo @sprainedbrain I was thinking of Catch 22, but I want a book none of you have read. Options - O Pioneers, Age of Innocence (haven't read since hs), Fahrenheit 451, anything by Hemingway. 6y
sprainedbrain @arubabookwoman from your list, I have read Song of Solomon, The Golden Notebook and some Wharton. Literally ALL of the other books you mention are on my TBR (#1001books list), but if I had to pick from your list, I would love to read Catch 22, Doctor Zhivago, any Wharton I haven‘t already read, or Midnight‘s Children for this rotation. 😃 6y
sprainedbrain @Butterfinger I would love to read Catch 22 (also the list of @arubabookwoman ), Age of Innocence, Fahrenheit 451, or any Hemingway I haven‘t already read. 😃 6y
sprainedbrain @arubabookwoman @Butterfinger @jmofo Here are some that I was considering: Lolly Willowes by Warner, Blue Castle by Montgomery, The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton, The Waves by Wolff, Fahrenheit 451 (if @butterfinger doesn‘t send it)... if none of these are appealing, I can definitely list more! (edited) 6y
Butterfinger Hmm. Choices. So many choices. I think I will choose Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea unless someone has already read it. @sprainedbrain @jmofo @arubabookwoman 6y
sprainedbrain @Butterfinger I read that one in college. Loved it, though! 6y
Butterfinger @sprainedbrain give me a Hemingway title you've not read. I've not read any of his work. 6y
sprainedbrain @Butterfinger I‘ve actually only read two... The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls. I‘d be happy to read any of them! 6y
Butterfinger @sprainedbrain @jmofo @arubabookwoman I will get To Have or Have Not, The Sun also Rises, or Snows of Kilimanjaro. I am enjoying getting to know all of you through this conversation. Readers are my favorite type of people. 6y
jmofo @Butterfinger I am good with re-reading any Hemingway as it‘s been at least a decade since I have read any. Out of the ones you have listed, I haven‘t read Snows of Kilimanjaro. 6y
jmofo @sprainedbrain I haven‘t read your suggestions except Fahrenheit but I would be happy to reread it, it has been some years. 6y
jmofo @arubabookwoman you listed some of my favorites (Catch-22, Sometimes a Great Notion) I‘ve read Midnights Children, and Augie and they‘re amazing books. There is a lot in them so a reread would still be interesting. I‘m down with any I haven‘t read! 6y
arubabookwoman I‘ve actually read many of the books we‘re considering, but since it was very long ago (25-30 years) in most cases I don‘t mind rereading, and in fact I‘be been dying to reread them. The only exception is Fahrenheit 451 which I read fairly recently and would rather not reread (but I will if it‘s chosen). Also, I always say I hate Hemingway, but if he‘s chosen I‘m looking forward to rereading something by him and being proven wrong.👎👎 6y
arubabookwoman The only Hemingway I don‘t want to reread is The Old Man and the Sea, but of course will if it‘s chosen. It‘s really confusing to keep up with everyone‘s preferences, so I think we all do the best we can to choose something not objectionable to others while picking the one we want to read the most. These are all “classics” and I think I‘m going to enjoy, or at least be edified by everyone‘s picks. I‘ll be mulling my choice over a few more days.👎 6y
arubabookwoman Once again, I‘m too verbose for Litsy. See prior 2 comments. @jmofo @Butterfinger @sprainedbrain 6y
arubabookwoman Just reread the comments—I read Lilly Willows last year, so would prefer not to reread it so soon. Another book by Sylvia Townsend Warner would be good if you want to read something by that author. @sprainedbrain 6y
arubabookwoman I will say that Edith Wharton is one of my favorite authors of all time, but the only well-known book of hers I‘ve read recently is Summer, so just about anything by her would work for me. @jmofo @Butterfinger @sprainedbrain 6y
sprainedbrain @arubabookwoman Have you read Wharton‘s ghost stories? I‘m guessing yes... I have challenged myself to pick something you haven‘t read. 😂 6y
jmofo @sprainedbrain I haven‘t read any Wharton yet, according to Goodreads, which serves as my memory these days. I know I haven‘t read Ghost Stories. 😄👾🎉 6y
arubabookwoman I haven‘t read Ghost Stories. In fact, I just heard of it a few months ago right here on Litsy, and was intrigued and stacked it! @jmofo @Butterfinger @sprainedbrain 6y
sprainedbrain @arubabookwoman @jmofo Ok! As long as @Butterfinger hasn‘t read it, this one will be my choice! 6y

#litsyclassicshost

Hi all #litsyclassics readers. Hope you are doing all fine and like the challenge. 😊 I saw already some buddy reads and some already have read several books from their classic tbr. 😊

Any questions? Or does someone need help?

TheBookHippie I'm enjoying it very much! I was just looking to see what to read next on my list !! 7y
batsy Loving the challenge! Just need more hours in the day for reading 😆 7y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve ticked four books off my list. 🤞will go smoothly. Oops, I think I didn‘t tag you in my last read, will rectify it 🏃‍♀️ 7y

I also found a Penguin section! 😃 Orange, and silver covers here (and more stacked on the floor). The shelf with the penguin on it holds black covers and green ones! I've never seen green penguin covers before! Looked like mainly crime classics, although I also found a Barbara Pym. 🤔 I had to exercise extreme self control here. The Folios limit themselves due to price, but these were for the most part only £2 per book!

britt_brooke 🤩🤩🤩 7y
PNWBookseller85 😍 That is so lovely. 7y
rabbitprincess Ahhhh I knew this was Hay before I finished scrolling down! Love this! 😄😄😄 7y

Any #Sydney littens going to/want to go to this tonight? I have two tickets, but my partner has to work late so if someone wants the extra one let me know! They‘ll be showing #LoveSimon at 7 pm, with a chat beforehand about upcoming #YA books 📚

Help needed! I'm compiling my list for the #LitsyClassics and I'm wondering what you would consider a "classic"? Also, any suggestions for the letters left blank would be awesome!!!! Thank you!

BrainyHeroine Katherine is a classic for sure. 7y
AndreaReads @BrainyHeroine Awesome! Thank you! 7y
Tove_Reads Daughter of Snows, The Diary of a Nobody, Divine Comedy 7y

Tove_Reads Villette 7y
Tove_Reads The Unbearable Lightness of Being 7y
Jabberwocky Depending on how you define classic this could count? She‘s a Canadian author that won the novel prize for literature in 2013. She writes amazing short stories about the lives of women. 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Not sure if it‘s considered a classic but about a classic‘s writer & I‘ve always wanted to read it. For K - 7y
Andrew65 @BrainyHeroine @AndreaReads Katherine would make my top 20 list of books I have read. Loved that book. ❤️ 7y
AndreaReads @Tove_Reads Thank you! Wonderful suggestions! @ForeverNerdy Kafka on the Shore is on my TBR as well, I just wasn't sure if counted as a classic since it was published in 2002. And I'll check out Villette! @Jaberwocky I've added View From Castle Rock to my TBR! Thank you! 7y
Tove_Reads Absolutely hated Kafka on the Shore, but apparently it‘s quite a popular read! 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I think if it‘s about a classic writer still counts on the hard letters 😉😉 Or maybe just the authors first name, so anything by Kafka. He has my favorite quote. “Books are an axe for the frozen sea within us.” I adore it! 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes D- Doctor Zhivago, The Double, The Demon Lover and other stories, Death comes for the archbishop, the diary of a nobody 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes E- Emma, England Made me 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes U- Ulysses, the unbearable lightness of being? 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes V- Villette, a vindication of the rights of women 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes These are just some of the ones for these letters I wrote down in my #bujo...I should be thinking of ones I've already read....hmmmm 7y
AndreaReads @ForeverNerdy That's an excellent point! Also, I talked to some other teachers at lunch, and they seem to agree that if a work has been place on the College Board list, it can be considered a classic. @Natasha.C.Barnes Awesome choices! Thank you! 7y
BookNAround Xingu by Edith Wharton. 7y
Kristy_K I really enjoyed this one. 7y

I finished my list for @Sarah83 who is hosting the 2018 classics reading challenge. Some of these have just recently been declared a classic. I have put some of these off for too long and it‘s time I finally read them. It‘s a tragedy that I never read Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings until now. Better late than never. #litsyclassics #2018readingchallenge #atoz #litsyatoz #atozreads

Sarah83 Great choices 😎 7y
