Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus
Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus | Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Frankenstein was published in 1818, the work of a 21-year-old genius named Mary Shelley. Hundreds of movies, adaptations, and monster masks later, its reputation remains so lively that the title has become its own word in the English language. Victor Frankenstein, a scientist, discovers the secret of reanimating the dead. After he rejects his hideous creation, not even the farthest poles of the earth will keep his bitter monster from seeking an inhuman revenge. Inspired by a uniquely Romantic view of sciences possibilities, Shelleys masterpiece ultimately wrestles with the hidden shadows of the human mind.

Bit late with a spooky read but still did it!
So unlike the popular tropes of Frankenstein and included swathes of nature descption and landscape.
I'd not read it before so feel it was needed.

dabbe I adore this book. 💛🤎🧡 6h
mcctrish I read this and listened to a live reading of it on its 200th anniversary and I have to say it holds up 4h

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mary Shelley was a pioneering badass. It‘s difficult to grasp that she was 18 when penning this boldly and brilliantly written gothic horror tale; also considered one of the very first science fiction novels. Timeless themes along with creative structure and multiple points of view evoke an unexpected compassion. This was my fourth reading.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Have you read this Frankenstein sequel-of-sorts? 4w

I love building Metal Earth models, and every year, the official retailer, Innovatoys, does a photo competition for Halloween. This year, I decided to sacrifice my windmill model to recreate the climax of Frankenstein. I used strips of muslin coated with bacon grease to make the fins flammable. I think it came out pretty good.

#ReadAway2024 This is the book I chose for April‘s #TBRTarot prompt, “Choose a book which has become a TV show or movie.” My favorite adaptation of Frankenstein is a miniseries from the 1970s called “Frankenstein: The True Story.” Frankenstein is widely acknowledged as the first science fiction book. I‘m not sure what I expected but this was a pleasant surprise. Mary Shelley‘s writing is lovely. Victor, the so-called hero, wanted to (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 play God but as soon as he saw his creation come to life, he rejected and abandoned the creature, providing him with no education or any kind of guidance. Victor‘s arrogance and cowardice caused anguish and death for the people he claimed to love. (edited) 6mo

The famous book with the famous cover of a famous painting: THE WANDERER ABOVE THE SEA OF FOG by Casper David Friedrich (1818).

Deifio But why this painting? 11mo
Faranae @Deifio Both Frankenstein and the creature wander throughout the book. Honestly I think it's just the most iconic Romantic painting for one of the most iconic Romantic Gothic novels.

There's certain paintings that always seem to be used for certain types of books. For example, John Pettie's “Two Strings to Her Bow“ being used for Regency romances novels. William Blake's own portrait of Newton is often used on books about... Blake.

Frankenstein tells the story of gifted scientist Victor Frankenstein who succeeds in giving life to a being of his own creation. However, this is not the perfect specimen he imagines that it will be, but rather a hideous creature who is rejected by Victor and mankind in general.

Was Frankenstein the first Emo? Or Walton? The monster? Sappy and melodramatic, Shelley‘s story may have been unsettling and a one-of-kind 200 years ago. But for readers today, I found it to be a depressing bore. Leave this one off your Spooky Season reading lists.

It‘s no secret that Frankenstein is more of a study on the horrors of humanity than anything else, but I still wish it had focused more on the creation of the monster. The tension just wasn‘t there. Essentially, he said I built a monster. Then the next sentence was I lost the monster. I just didn‘t feel connected to the plot. It did like the monsters monologue but at that point I had already checked out and lost interest.

The consequences that arise when an undergrad science student decides to experiment with resurrection, & flees from the creation of a strange new being.

One of my favorite Halloween reads, the birth of sci fi, & a fantastic dramatic performance of Dan Stevens all wrapped in one. Slow paced, very descriptive, & of it‘s time. But also an examination of humanity & monstrousness, & the responsibility of experimentation. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
