The story of a rising evil, and the group of friends who through love, communication, working together, and a whole lot of research bring down something more powerful and cruel than themselves.

This ended up being unexpectedly and upsettingly timely. There will be heartbreaks there will be setbacks, but we will survive. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 #DraculaDaily

We usually walk, but it‘s raining, and my husband usually does it, but he‘s sick. I arrived early enough to park which meant I was stuck while the line of cars went around. But I had just the right amount of time to read the first chapter!

I loved the writing style of the book. Reading through diary of the characters made me care for them. It seems to have leveraged the reader's whole different level of intimate raw true experience of a person when you are allowed to peep into their personal diary. And as always, love the selfless portrayal of friendship and trust. Happy ending is a bonus.

This is, like, my 4th read. This time, I listened to an audiobook (not the one with Alan Cumming and Tim Curry, though, blast!) and it was so fun! This is, certainly, problematic in places. However, the lore is SO STRONG that even today, few stray from it. (If they do, we get sparkly vampires. At least she tried something new. Bless.) Anyway, still a solid pick.

Discussion thread

Apologies for the lateness, I was distracted irl.
So, did you enjoy Dracula? I'm interested to know your thoughts.

🧛‍♂️ Did you like the epistolary format?
🧛‍♂️ Do you think it added to the suspense and tension?
🧛‍♂️ What do you consider to be the main message of the book?
🧛‍♂️ Do you think there is a subtext or deeper meaning?
🧛‍♂️ Why was the book banned?

TheBookHippie Reread for me - but I loved it once again, this format works for me. I think below the surface there‘s a ton of good things to discuss. It‘s banned because of the blood, violence and sexuality. The times were Victorian and the “we don‘t talk about how we live”, kinda like now! Perceived liberation too risky to allude to. 😵‍💫😂🙃🖤 13mo
Cuilin Ok in all honesty, I forgot to read this. I had a copy, I was ready, excited even and somehow life just got in the way. 😞 13mo
See All 18 Comments
AllDebooks @Cuilin pesky real life has a way of doing that sometimes. Don't worry 😊 13mo
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie it's one of my all-time favourites, as well as a good yarn there is so much to unpack. I'll give others a chance to comment before blathering on!! 13mo
BookwormAHN The abridged version I listened to this year stunk but generally I love this book. I think the way its written gives it a sort of mystery and since other than Van Helsing and maybe Lucy, the characters are all very Victorian and proper so I always wonder what they would really like to be doing or saying. Especially Jonathan, he's always so in control of himself. 13mo
dabbe I've read DRACULA quite a few times. This was my 1st with the Daily Dose through email (and it's still going!). I found the long lengths between the letters to be difficult. When I get into a book, I wanna keep going. I can appreciate it, though, because I got to feel (for example) exactly how Mina felt, waiting FOREVER for a note from Jonathan. I never tire of this classic, no matter how I read it. I just bought the annotated version, too! 💜🖤🧡 13mo
CrowCAH Super atmospheric! Love how this is the original text for all other vampire books to be inspired off of! 🧛‍♂️ 13mo
Bluebird Loved this book! I‘m kicking myself I took so long to finally read it. I read via the multicast audio version which was ideal for the epistolary format. I thought this style definitely added to the tension. 13mo
AllDebooks @BookwormAHN I think that the morality of the time period it was written in and battle between good vs evil is what makes it such a compelling story. There are so many contrasts such as gender and equality, science vs superstition, feminine passivity and masculine dominance and reversal as vampiric changes change the women to more aggressive, sexualised creatures. 13mo
AllDebooks @dabbe I admire your persistence. I race through this everytime I read it and still fell the tension. I could not read this at a slow pace. I appreciate your comment on empathasising with Mina. 13mo
AllDebooks @CrowCAH It never ceases to amaze me how atmospheric this book is. The descriptions of Jonathon's time in Dracula's castle are so eerie and creepy. Incredible story. 13mo
AllDebooks @Bluebird This was the first example of epistolary format I ever read and it got me completely hooked on it. Glad you joined us and enjoyed the book. 13mo
Saknicole I definitely love the epistolary format. It‘s funny because I don‘t love it in modern works but I am all about the Victorian Gothic style using it. Make me think I need to up my journaling and letter game 😂 13mo
Saknicole Also here is a hilarious gift of modern day Dracula inspired comedy song writing. https://youtu.be/CUKmd50_niI?si=g8-FMHTpLdfC2Xy- 13mo
AllDebooks @Saknicole 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 13mo

I haven‘t read Bram Stoker‘s masterpiece since I was a teenager and when I tell you this book gave me the same goosebumps that the original novel did year ago I mean it. Absolutely wonderful. Gorgeous artwork and of course familiar yet unsettling story. #scarathlon2023 #scarathlon #mischiefandmayhem

#two4Tuesday

1. ❤️

2. Tagged. I had to go with a book I love, even though it‘s a bit awkward to use a ❤️ emoji for Dracula!! 😂😂

I love reading your responses to these posts. Always fun to see if there are more books to add to my tbr list.

So I‘ll go first: Dracula! The Historian is a close second. It‘s a coincidence that they are themed. I just love both these books, as well as The Count of Monte Cristo, but it‘ll be awhile before I read that chunkster again.
