Breaking the Slump LP
Breaking the Slump LP: How Great Players Survived Their Darkest Moments in Golf--and What You Can Learn from Them | Jimmy Roberts
38 posts
The nearly 37 million people in the United States who play golf probably all have one thing in common: At some point they have contemplated giving up the game because they were frustrated with the way they were playing. When those blissful moments of precise drives and perfect putts disappear, when the ball seems to have a mind of its own, and when well-grooved swings become totally unhinged, we find ourselves in that panicked state known as a "slump." When Jimmy Roberts, the award-winning reporter and writer, entered his own period of frustration with the game, he decided to ask some of the most famous golfers and successful people in the world for advice. Here, for the first time, are the stories and recollections of eighteen veteran players whose wisdom is both practical and philosophical. Some concentrate on technique (when Phil Mickelson is dissatisfied with the way he's driving the ball, he practices bunker shots to reinforce the most important element of the tee shotrhythm). Others focus on mental adjustments (Davis Love III remembers his late father's essential advice when he's frustrated: Try less hard). With stories from greats Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Dottie Pepper, Greg Norman, George Herbert Walker Bush, Paul Azinger, and many others, this is an emotional and spiritual first aid kit for anyone who plays the game and even those who don't. As the 41st president says, the way we handle adversities in golf can provide a template for how to handle the challenges in life: Golf lessons can sometimes be life lessons too. There may not be a universal cure-all, but there are many ways to recover from a debilitating slump.

Part of September and most all of October I have been in a major slump 😞. I‘ve tried several different books and still returned them mostly unread to the library.
We‘ve had some friends (2) that have lost their spouse and my husband‘s almost 2nd dad (his childhood best friend‘s father) pass away. It‘s taken a lot out of us mentally.
I‘ve got some good books going now, still a bit slow but I‘m getting there 🙂

**SLUMP ALERT 🤣** Seriously hit a reading slump after the wonderful Tom Lake. I‘ve started four different books and made it halfway, but I keep finding myself not reaching for my current read. I‘d love to hear the last book I got you out of a slump!

ICantImReading @AvidReader25 ugh, I‘m sorry! I‘ve heard some people say re-reading a favorite can help! Or, I don‘t know if you‘ve read it yet or if you would like it, but “Fourth Wing” is such a buzzy book this summer that was easy to escape into! My favorite read this month was “Happiness Falls” by Angie Kim. Hope you find something that captures your attention soon 🙂 1y
ICantImReading @AvidReader25 it occurred to me as I just wrote my review for “Shark Heart”… maybe you would like that one? It‘s VERY different than Tom Lake, but weirdly, the male character is a high school drama teacher and is directing “Our Town”! It‘s written in short sections that are easy to get into. It‘s a really unique book in the sea of same-old stories! 🦈 1y
AvidReader25 @ICantImReading Oh that looks so interesting!!! I‘m definitely going to check it out and maybe reread a favorite too. 1y

Help! I seem to be in a bit of a reading slump. Nothing sounds good and I‘ve started and bailed on a couple of things. Any suggestions? I read a lot of nonfiction, social science, biography and memoir, but also some popular and literary fiction. Not really into sci-fi, fantasy, or horror. Anything you‘ve loved lately and would recommend? Thank you!

Ladygodiva7 Have you read Spare? (Prince Harry) 1y

Is anyone else in a midyear reading or social media slump? These past few months, I have been struggling to be active on Litsy, keep up with online events, or stick with a TBR. Hoping that #Rushathon will help me get back into more frequent Listy visits, as I‘m missing my fellow online booknerds.☺️We know I‘m a listmaker, so I might have to come up with a list of posts to make to get me more active on here…🫣

Please share any suggestions! ❤️❤️

dabbe Not only do we know you're an excellent listmaker, but you are a VORACIOUS reader who has so much to share! Maybe give us some top ten lists: your top 10 mysteries, your top 10 contemporary books, your top ten audio speakers ... I'd love to read and get ideas from those posts! 💙🖤🩵 1y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘ve been trying out genres I wouldn‘t normally on audio and it‘s mostly been great! But I also think that some years aren‘t great reading years, and that‘s ok! 1y
Andrew65 Hope it helps for you. I was in a massive slump during July and most of July, but managed to pick things up again over the 7 - 10 days 1y
Andrew65 I used favourite authors to get me going again, as well as using a Readathon to motivate me. Picked an author and book to start with that moves along at a mile a minute and makes me want to read on. Also ensured I prioritised reading, and tried to keep momentum up. @LizPixie @Clwojick (edited) 1y

I am in a reading slump. Started several books but nothing holds my attention.

CatMS Been there. Usually start several books none of which grab me, then pick up one from a favorite author and genre which helps me get going again. 2y
Deblovestoread They are the worst. Sometimes reading the next in a favorite series can help. Visiting with familiar characters is comforting. 2y
tessavi @CatMS Thanks, I will try that. 2y
tessavi @Deblovestoread unfortunately, I have no good series going at the moment. 2y

TheRiehlDeal Slumps are the worst! Maybe you can try taking a break? Do another activity/hobby you enjoy, perhaps? I could maybe suggest a book for you to get out of your slump, and that book is Where the Crawdads Sing by Delila Owens. I stopped reading it about halfway through cause I knew I wanted it as a hardcover for Christmas. But from what I read I thoroughly enjoyed. It might be the book that gets you out of your slump. 4y
CaffeineAndCandy 🥲 oh no 🤦‍♀️ 4y
keys_on_fire I had been in a slump for a long time. An English teacher friend of mine suggested to read a young adult novel or a favorite book from my childhood. Something that would be fun or bring comfort. It totally worked for me, but each person is different. Maybe give it a try and see! My personal advice? Don‘t feel bad about it. Give yourself some grace 🥰 Good luck! 🍀 4y
Crazeedi I know about slumps too! It sucks! I listened to podcasts and did some coloring and just tried not to stress 4y

knittedgnome How was your time home? 6y
julesG @knittedgnome Quiet and stressful. And too short! 6y
julesG @Crazeedi it's not mine, it's outside the clinic I'm staying at. 6y
julesG @Kaye Yep, I guess audiobook #4 did the trick. It's a little on the "hot and sizzling" side, but it took me on an extended 2 hour #audiowalk. 6y
Kaye That‘s great ! Good for you. 6y
knittedgnome @julesG well at least it was quiet? Sorry it was stressful 6y
julesG @knittedgnome but stressful in a good way. 😉 6y
knittedgnome Phew!!! That's good then! 6y

I‘ve barely read anything this month but that hasn‘t stopped me from 1-clicking like it‘s my job. Sigh. I miss my books.

TrishB 😔 hope it ends soon! 7y
vivastory Hope your slump ends quickly! 7y
vivastory BTW I loved Wolf Road 7y

saresmoore Boo. I‘m sending you reading dust (like pixie dust, not like time to clean dust) and happiness. 😘♥️ 7y
eanderson Lol! I do the same thing! (edited) 7y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB @vivastory @saresmoore Thank you! I think it‘s a combination of stress and crap weather. All I want to do is zone out in front of the tv. 😕 7y
MicheleinPhilly @eanderson I really should just disable that 1-click button. It gets me in so much trouble. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto Same. I've pretty much only been listening to audiobooks this month, but I just keep one clicking e-books. Multiple full price ones even. 🙄😬 7y
MicheleinPhilly @Ashley_Nicoletto I‘m trying not to do full price because they always end up on super sale at a later date and it always makes me 😡. 7y
Notafraidofwords That one click is awesome. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto I know better but I have a problem. 😩😩 7y

How to tell you might finally (FINALLY) be out of your reading slump: After you swore you weren‘t going to do any challenges in 2018, now you‘re like, “well maybe I‘ll do one...” and you‘ve finished the last three books you opened. 🙌 🙌 I thought being in a reading slump was the worst - but now I‘m actually glad I had one. Sometimes taking a break from something and then coming back to it makes you appreciate it more.

SusanInTiburon I so agree! Last year, I made a resolution to read FEWER books than I read the year before. It was verrrrry interesting. 7y

EllieDottie Yes! I totally agree! Sometimes you just need to take a break! 7y
Bookzombie Yay! 7y
LeahBergen Yay!! 👏🏻👏🏻 7y
KimM So true. I've also taken a break from reading this month. And I'll be doing this challenge 👍🏻 7y
RohitSawant Yay! 👏👏 7y
TrishB 👍🏻👍🏻 7y
LauraBeth @SusanInTiburon I think I was more selective in my choices this year and read more quality books than I have in a long time. Fewer books but better quality made a huge difference 😀 7y

1) difficult to say, anywhere between 1 and 20
2) both!
3) reading brain candy - romcom
4) it was 20, then I set it to 100 and I'm at 115 or so
5) biographies
6) postcard
7) about 1,000
8) is there a limit?
9) I hate shopping for clothes, but ask me to accompany you to the book shop or IKEA. 😉

@Josie

Josie I am going to BOTH a bookshop and IKEA today!! I'll think of you :) 7y
julesG @Josie 😘 I can't go to any shops today, shops are closed on Sunday here in Germany. 7y

I'm in a reading slump 😣 I am no longer a librarian so I think my incentive has got lost. Feel like starting a new job has taken up all of my brain space. Am determined to start again tonight. So watch this space 📚

Reviewsbylola Good luck! Slumps suck. 7y

AlaMich 84 Charing Cross Road. Told through letters; wonderful story for book lovers and easy to read in short snatches of time. 8y
shuva I got putt of my slump with Man called Ove 8y
