An eccentric woman who is great with numbers--but not so great with people--realizes it's up to her to pull a community together in this charming, big-hearted debut perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and The Rosie Project. Germaine Johnson doesn't need friends. She has her work and her Sudoku puzzles. Until, that is, an incident at her insurance company leaves her jobless--and it turns out that there are very few openings these days for senior mathematicians with zero people skills. Soon enough though, Germaine manages to secure a position at City Hall answering calls on the Senior Citizens Helpline. But it turns out that the mayor has something else in mind for Germaine: a secret project involving the troublemakers at the senior citizens center and their feud with the neighboring golf club--which happens to be run by the dashing yet disgraced national Sudoku champion, Don Thomas, a celebrity of the highest order to Germaine. Don and the mayor want the senior center closed down and at first, Germaine is dedicated to helping them out--it makes sense mathematically, after all. But when Germaine actually gets to know the group of elderly rebels at the senior center, they open her eyes to a life outside of boxes and numbers and for the first time ever, Germaine realizes she may have miscalculated. Filled with an eccentric, totally unique, and (occasionally) cranky cast of characters you can't help but love, The Helpline is a feel-good page-turner that will make you reexamine what it means to lead a happy life--and is bound to capture your heart along the way.

My brain is tired and I am in need of book recommendations. I'm looking for a book published between 1800 and 1849 that is written by a woman (trying to kill 2 challenge prompts with 1 book). I'm trying to stay away from Austen-not because I don't love her books, but because I've already read a lot by her.

TheKidUpstairs Frankenstein, Jane Eyre 2mo
SpellboundReader Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell, published during 1848. 2mo
lil1inblue @TheKidUpstairs I've read both already 😅but Jane Eyre might be due for a re-read. Thanks! 🙂 2mo

I need help!!

In general my life doesn‘t work smoothly without an audiobook option at all times, but I must have tried almost a dozen different audiobooks over the last few months and switched over to print versions of all of them because I couldn‘t concentrate on the audio for some reason…

Above are some of my favorite audiobooks from the past 5 odd years (my taste is somewhat eclectic). I‘d love recommendations of anything you loved on audio!!

BekaReid The Electricity of Every Living Thing by Katherine May (narrated by author) 2mo
maich I love Educated🥰 2mo
maich Have you listened this one? Is my fave audiobook. A fiction novel about Gable and Young affair. 2mo

lil1inblue When I'm in an audiobook slump, I turn to memoirs or YA. I don't know why. I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy got me out of a slump last year. 2mo
Bookwormjillk When I can‘t focus on anything I try travel memoirs like 2mo
Aimeesue This was great. Much swashbuckling! 2mo
Caryl Have you seen The Good Place? If you liked that show, you‘d probably enjoy How To Be Perfect, and it‘s fantastic on audio— includes the cast from the show! A friend recently recommended Viola Davis‘s Finding Me on audio, I haven‘t gotten to that one yet. If you like middle grade, the audio version of the graphic novel Mexikid is amazing. 2mo
IndoorDame @Caryl thanks for these titles! And I loved The Good Place! 2mo

Help Litsy friends! I got a new (android) phone and Litsy is not even showing up in the Google Play Store. It's one of my favourite apps! Has anyone else encountered this? Any words of wisdom? Workarounds? I would be so bummed if I couldn't post on Litsy anymore. #Litsy #ListyHelp

Hey Litsy pals, I need some help!
I'm looking to get some local moms together in my area for a book club and I'm trying to think of some good beach reads that are not too cliche romance-y but are entertaining and maybe also on the shorter side, because we are all new moms so who has time? Hahaha!
Any suggestions are highly appreciated! Also doesn't have to be the "typical" beach read- we're all pretty open.

Soubhiville Maybe this? Not romancy per se, somewhat beachy… 10mo
Andrea4 @Soubhiville on the possible list! It has some really good reviews, doesn't it? Thank you! 10mo
LiteraryinLawrence Maybe the new book The Wishing Game? It‘s a fun short read with a theme of new motherhood? 10mo
Soubhiville Oooo, if you want a motherhood/ parenthood theme, I loved this! I don‘t remember anything beachy about it but it was great: 10mo

Leaving on a beach vacation in a couple of weeks and I have a book dilemma. Do I pack a bunch of “easy” reads or do I bring a more dense read? And if I bring more “easy” reads, how many do I bring?

hannah-leeloo I always take a dense and a spare 1y
AmyG I would say bring a dense and 2 easy. Cover your bases. 1y
TEArificbooks For the beach I bring all easy 1y
See All 6 Comments
LeahBergen I‘d say 3 or 4 easy and a dense one, just in case! 1y
RebelReader I say one dense and 2-3 easy. And for some reason I always feel the need to buy a book at the airport! 😌 1y
LiteraryinLawrence Hmm. If it was me, I'd do all easy! And for a week I'd say maybe 4, depending on how long they are? Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to bring! 1y

Help a girl out? I'm trying to decide what to read for #Booked2021 - Underrated or Lesser Known Titles. What are your favourite reads that you think not enough people know about?

Patchshank I don't know what the prompts are. But I'll list some of my favorites 2y
Patchshank Horror/comedy. Author also has a blog if you want to look through it to see if it's your sort of thing 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick In the spirit of the November's Author A Month Carlos Ruiz Zafon, might I recommend Marina? I loved it in audio format. It had young characters and was easy to follow, but it wasn't childish like some YA can be. The Prince of Mist was also good. I'm actually going with The Midnight Palace by him for the very same prompt. 2y
See All 11 Comments
Patchshank He has several series that are all kind of tied in together and a few stand alone novels that take place in the same universe. Horror. 2y
Singout Fauna by Alissa York 2y
EvieBee This is on Hoopla. So good. 2y
TheKidUpstairs @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick ooh, I think I might have Marina on a shelf somewhere. Thanks! 2y
TheKidUpstairs @Patchshank Off to be The Wizard sounds so fun! Thanks for the recommendations 2y
TheKidUpstairs @Singout thanks for the rec! 2y
TheKidUpstairs @EvieBee ooh, that sounds really good! 2y
Avanders I think Matt Ruff is underknown and underrated. Perhaps one of his most known is also one of my favorites: 2y

The Helpline is a book about Germaine. Germaine is in her late thirties, she‘s very good with numbers, she loves Soduku, and she very recently lost her job as senior mathematician at Wallace Insurance. This is more than just an office comedy with a light romantic sub-plot: it‘s a witty contemporary parable about how we decide what to value in life. I need you help littens. This is a question from a friend: My niece (six) has been teased at school for being in a wheelchair, are there any books and other media that I can get my sister to have at home that represent people with disabilities? She is also dealing with emotions about wanting fairer skin as she is mixed race and having racial remarks from children etc too. Any ideas gratefully received?

TrishB I feel so sad at this post 💔 I don‘t have any ideas but sending love to your niece. There are lots of librarians and teachers on here that I‘m sure will have lots of ideas. 3y

FantasyChick I suggest following along with some of the readathons and photo challenges. There are a lot of weekly games as well where you can repost and simply answer a few questions that allow users to get to know you. If you read library books, post about them. You don't have to be a buyer to be a reader 😁 3y
melissajayne @Chelsea.Poole yep; I have been to borrow materials since June and have been able to go inside and browse since August 3y
Suet624 I download books from the library. 3y
Scochrane26 @melissajayne I usually do the two4tuesday, weekendreads, & wondrouswednesday questions. Sometimes there are other questions floating around. I sometimes do a buddy read. Just don‘t get too overextended. (edited) 3y

Hello everyone, I was wondering something. It's not book related, but its really important to me. There is an organization called Rended Heart, they help survivors of Human trafficking with a place to stay, a way to get out, and clothing and basic neccsities (shampoo, toothbrushes, hair brushes, ect). I was wonderinv if maybe anyone had some old gently used clothes or things they don't use they would be willing to send me to donate to them? 👇cont

CaroPi Is a great iniciative! 4y
Insightsintobooks The people that run this organization are super nice and have amazing hearts. What I'm about to say is going to be extremely hard for me to say. As many of you know, I just got out of an abusive relationship 2 months ago. While I was with my ex, he sold me (when I was 19 and pregnant with his child, he used violence and fear and psychological abuse to get me to go) then later he sold me for shelter.. by this time I knew better than to resist. 👇 4y
Insightsintobooks I am a survivor of Human sex trafficking. I know the people at Rended Heart are beautiful souls because I have needed their services. They are faith based but they don't push religion on you which is good because I'm not Christian. Oh also if you do have anything you'd like to donate my email is insightsintobooks@gmail.com 4y

Insightsintobooks @Chrissyreadit honestly, I'm not sure, but I think it's a wonderful idea. I'll ask. The survivors stay at various houses and what is a house without a library? 4y

Help me, Obi-Litten-Obi, you‘re my only hope!

But seriously, I wanted to see if my library had this book that I absolutely cannot remember the title of and can‘t find through Google. I‘ve seen it here recently but didn‘t stack it, apparently. M/M romance featuring a bookseller who runs a book club and his arrogant coworker (I think) who joins the romance book club and sparks fly. Ring any bells?

Here‘s my cat for your trouble.

I found several laugh out loud hidden in this book! I‘ll just use this one example on my husband who is an Engineer that loves Math! Me...not so much. “I‘m like a Math text book, I‘m full of problems.” He stared at me then started laughing. So that made this novel such a fun read, I was clueless as the other other characters in this book regarding mathematical equations. It just made Germaine that more humorous.

I need help!! I‘m trying to find a book I read as kid and can‘t remember the title, only that it was about 2 kids coming down the Mississippi River on a pontoon boat. The name smith-smith figures in somewhere. @MrBook help!!

Help! Has anyone ever sent anything media mail and the package didn't track for over a week. Did it make it to where it should have been or did the USPS loss the package? I sent a package out last weekend and it hasn't tracked since last Monday. I am on hold with the USPS but I don't know if I will get to talk to them before my break is over.

AmyG I recieved a package once...media mail...and it was empty....no books. When the post office sucks...it REALLY sucks. 5y
Ash.on.the.line Frustrating... pretty sure only once, I sent a package that they didn‘t update the tracking until it arrived. Took over a week! I was so upset. Hopefully you get it figured out! 5y
TheAromaofBooks It's unusual but I have had it take that long before it shows movement - media mail is bottom priority. Did you find out where it is?? 5y
See All 18 Comments
Lovesbooks87 @TheAromaofBooks no. The wait was 40 minutes to an hour and I only had like 35 minutes left of my break so I stayed on the phone as long as I could. But I will be calling them back! 5y
TheAromaofBooks My best missing package story was one time I ordered a book through PaperbackSwap, and like a week later I get the shredded up envelope in a special envelope from the PO that says “your package was damaged in transit“ - no book. Literally MONTHS later, this book shows up in my box: because the sender had put my name/address on a piece of paper inside the book, they apparently found it somewhere or other in some machinery, and sent it on! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Anyway, hopefully your package has just stalled somewhere and is still safe. But if not, you never know when the post office fairies are going to grant you a random wish and send something you gave up on months ago! 5y
Lovesbooks87 @TheAromaofBooks I had a mark up book take almost a month via media mail and it didn't update right. I mailed two boxes to the same person one arrived today. It was a lot of books and I used almost two rolls of packaging tape on the boxes so I am hoping the box didn't open. Hopefully it shows up. My fingers are crossed! 5y
Lovesbooks87 @Ash.on.the.line @TheAromaofBooks @AmyG I called the USPS and they put in an order for someone to look into. I got a call from the post master of where I sent it too and they have the package it was flagged because I put a card in the box. Didn't know that you couldn't put a card in a media mail package! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
TheAromaofBooks Whaaaaat?! Just a notecard?? That seems like it would still be media... or be in the same category as an invoice or something. So they actually opened your package and found a card and then just... are keeping it?! 5y
Lovesbooks87 @TheAromaofBooks it was a card and a pack of sticky notes. Yea they opened it because they can search media mail. No they aren't going to keep it thank goodness. I got in contact with the person that I sent the package too and she is going to pick it up. They were actually going to charge like $74 because those things were in there but the lady was nice and said she wouldn't. I didn't know that two little things would make a big deal. 5y
Lovesbooks87 @TheAromaofBooks the post master that I talked too said you can't even send magazines in media mail if they have advertisements. That you have to send them first class. I was like I have never heard of that. I had put sticky notes on some of the books with trigger warning to give the person that I wasn't sending it to as a heads up and she said you can't even do that! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Ash.on.the.line Wow that‘s crazy! Glad it got figured out! I didn‘t know that about cards and such either. Sometimes I think the post office should have an easy way to access this type of info for people. 5y
Lovesbooks87 @Ash.on.the.line seriously. I always send a card along with my media mail packages. Won't be doing that anymore! (edited) 5y
TheAromaofBooks I'm not sure if this link will work for you - https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm#ep1113500 - section 4.0 is the description of what can be included in Media Mail. But if you scroll down to section 6.0 it describes things that are still allowed to also be included in Media Mail without accruing additional charges. It seems as though your notes should definitely be included under the description of 6.4. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I guess if they aren't going to try and charge you the extra postage, it's probably not that big of a deal. But if you are wanting to save money by sending a different package that way, I would take these regulations in when you go to mail the package and make sure that the postal worker can explain exactly why it doesn't qualify. Even if they claim your trigger warning notes don't count as personal correspondence, I think they would fit 6.2(f). 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Ash.on.the.line - you may also find the Media Mail link useful, so I'll tag you, too lol 5y
Ash.on.the.line @TheAromaofBooks thanks so much! I find the post office website hard to navigate sometimes! 😆 5y
Lovesbooks87 @TheAromaofBooks thanks. I have been sending cards in my media mail packages for years. Never knew that a card would be a big deal. Won't be sending it along anymore. Yes. Thanks goodness they aren't going to charge the extra postage. I would have felt awful! 5y

I‘m here to ask Litsy for help: I seem to be at a crossroads. My job is inadequate, I‘m looking for work but have the impending recession looming over me now, my car needs 1000‘s of dollars or repairs to be safe to drive (I‘m lucky I have a good support system, so getting to my job won‘t be a problem). I‘m starting to see depression looming again. What books made a mark on you during a crossroads in your life? #help #crossroads #recommendations

TrishB I don‘t have any specific books. But when I feel so many different things getting on top of me I try and see which I can actually solve and try and plan something for those. Just having a plan helps me. I‘m not trying to be patronising as we all approach things differently I know. Hope you start to find some answers. 5y
Megabooks I‘ve had two years worth of issues in my life recently and read this three times 5y
TheBookDream @Megabooks thank you, I‘ll check it out 5y
TheBookDream @TrishB I‘ve been working on that too, but having trouble with the long term planning. Either way, it seems like leaving the weekend free of such activities has been helpful in getting perspective. Weekend for books and board games. Weekdays for life. 5y
TrishB I try not to do anything at least one day of the weekend for the same reason! 5y

#netgalley #reviewathon book 7. The description promised a friendship between an awkward younger woman and a lonely older woman which I was there for. The book did not deliver. Another ASD MC acting awkwardly and making cringe worthy errors. Predictable plot, awkward dialog, too many side characters with no depth. Disappointing for sure. ⭐️ ⭐️

I wanted a copy of this book because of the comparison to Eleanor Oliphant and The Rose Project. I just adored these books so much. However The Helpline was so different with the exception that these protagonists have some major peculiarities

For my full review, please visit my blog at: https://obsessedbookaholic.com/2019/07/24/the-helpline/

Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

MelissaSue81 Aw, I requested this from the library because it sounded in the Vein of Eleanor Oliphant and The Lido. Too bad it didn't live up to your expectations. 5y
EH2018 I almost picked this one up for the same reason! Maybe I will skip it. Have you read The Cactus? That one was pretty good 5y
Lauren.Archer @EH2018 yeah I loved the cactus, and this would also be in the similar vane. My biggest issue was how they took advantage of some of quirks. I thought it was just mean. 5y

I‘m in a funk. I think I‘ve figured out what I want to read, but I need your help, Litsy! I want a fast-paced read that will scare the bejeesus out of me, but that also isn‘t gory and the dog must not die (the book doesn‘t have to have a dog, but if it does, the dog must live). Does such a thing exist? (I‘ve read Bird Box already, which was great right up until the crappy ending).

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Although you might want to take my suggestion with a grain of salt, I‘m not a big horror reader. 5y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @sprainedbrain I need to get to Penpal soon! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I thought that too, and I have no such great reason for thinking that🤣 5y
sprainedbrain @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled it‘s so creepy. 😱 Also, I thought they were sperm, too, and I do not have an excuse. 😂 (edited) 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Not sure if there are dogs, dead or otherwise, in that rec though! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel I think it started as a stand alone, but he later wrote more...so it‘s a series now. 5y

Soubhiville I also saw sperm. 🤷‍♀️. 5y
WhatThePuck @sprainedbrain I second Penpal. It freaked me out and I love thrillers/horror. 5y
Bette I love that you draw the line at at dog safety, I've quit reading recommended books because of that too. 🐶❤️ just read A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World, a good dystopian...but I had to keep flipping ahead to make sure every character I liked was okay. 5y
bookishdawg “Intensity” by Dean Koontz lives up to its name😶. As a fellow dog lover, though, my favorite of his is “Watchers”... also meets your criteria! 👍🏻 5y
BarbaraBB I need to stack Penpal @sprainedbrain and I was thinking of 5y
DGRachel @WhatThePuck @Bette @bookishdawg @BarbaraBB Thank you for the recommendations! 5y
DGRachel @Bette I've finished a couple of books where the dogs die in recent years, but usually, once I come to that scene, I bail. I know what you mean about skipping ahead. I read the first books in a series where the dog is the narrator and I remember being terrified at the end of the first or second book that the dog was going to die, but thankfully, there have been more books in the series since then and our faithful narrator is still with us! 5y

I'm moving back into classroom teaching this year and need to build my library up a bit. I'm teaching 8th grade ELA. The area that needs the most help is poetry and non-fiction. There are only a handful of both in the classroom now. What titles (poetry and non-fiction esp.) would you recommend as must-haves? Also what titles do think 8th graders would WANT to read (whether or not you think they are high literature. haha)

LibrarianRyan umumumumum I really want to say something. But ...... youll see. okay, anything Jason Reynolds, Rangers Apprentice, Try the Young Bond series, you can pick them up used cheaply. Alex Rider, even though books in the later part of the series get pretty teen. The Golden Compass Series. Also, since it's for a class room, I can totally send you a box of items I have finished. I usually save them for Halloween, but I have way more then I need. 5y

Bailedbailed

I‘m bailing on this - I don‘t hate it but it‘s not for me. The protagonist is arrogant & unlikeable. She seems to be on the spectrum but this is done clunkily & wears thin (one or two methodical, logical routines are enough). The story is implausible (Local Council meets spy caper) but this would be fine if I enjoyed the writing or characters. Unfortunately not! 😬

CarolynM I agree she was supposed to be on the spectrum, but it didn't ring true for me. I think bailing was a good call. 5y
Abailliekaras @CarolynM agreed! It seemed contrived - i ‘m intrigued as to whether the author has had experience of this herself - it didn‘t feel authentic. 5y

I hate to say it, but I‘ve now bailed on two books in a row. 👎 I only got about 16% into this one before I decided to cut my losses. I don‘t know what vibe the author was going for, but I found the main character to be pretty unlikeable and the whole story just wasn‘t drawing me in.
