Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters
Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters | Jane Austen, Ben H. Winters
39 posts | 38 read | 35 to read
From the publisher of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies comes a new tale of romance, heartbreak, and tentacled mayhem. Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters expands the original text of the beloved Jane Austen novel with all-new scenes of giant lobsters, rampaging octopi, two-headed sea serpents, and other biological monstrosities. As our story opens, the Dashwood sisters are evicted from their childhood home and sent to live on a mysterious island full of savage creatures and dark secrets. While sensible Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars, her romantic sister Marianne is courted by both the handsome Willoughby and the hideous man-monster Colonel Brandon. Can the Dashwood sisters triumph over meddlesome matriarchs and unscrupulous rogues to find true love? Or will they fall prey to the tentacles that are forever snapping at their heels? This masterful portrait of Regency England blends Jane Austens biting social commentary with ultraviolent depictions of sea monsters biting. Its survival of the fittestand only the swiftest swimmers will find true love! From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

It was a bit hard to keep the characters straight, between using first names or sometimes a title with last names (Mr. or Miss). I thought the book did pick up in the 2nd half and especially the last 1/3 with the sea monster and underwater action! There were some good illustrations that were added to the book, as well. It helped me picture some of the odd sea 6. It also included humourous book club discussion questions.

Catching up on reviews. I read this one for #PemberLittens & found it pretty entertaining overall. Some of it was quite clever & made me laugh. Since it follows the book so closely (except for you know... sea monsters & oversize homicidal ocean life...) I got a tad restless in parts as we just finished the original, but it‘s campy & enjoyable. Biggest takeaway: it was extremely difficult to keep household servants alive after the “Alteration.”😱😆

sprainedbrain Those poor servants! 😂 4y

Omg this book... really just a chapter-by-chapter retelling of S&S, only Regency England has suffered a great Alteration, where literally everything in the ocean wants to kill everyone. It‘s ridiculous and LOL funny.

Lucy is a sea witch (explains a lot, really), Mr. Palmer has seen some sh*t to account for his drollness, Lady Middleton is fierce, London is in a dome at the bottom of the sea, the Colonel has face tentacles and fights pirates... ⬇️

sprainedbrain I think my favorite parts were when horrible, gross horror movie stuff is happening and everyone just carries on with their societal gossip and manners.

Oh, and this Marianne/Brandon line had me 🤣:

‘She found, in the event, that his face was not the only region of his physiognomy that could be described as multi-appendaged, and she found that fact to carry with it certain marital satisfactions.‘

⭐️⭐️⭐️
(edited) 4y
Bookwormjillk I couldn‘t get through this one. Really looking forward to P&P chapter a day! 4y
mollyrotondo Hahaha I really liked this one. Lucy being a sea witch was perfect. And I loved all the times they made fun of Brandon‘s fish face. And yes that line about not just his face having multiple appendages was a riot. And John Dashwood participating in medical experiments in order to make more money and then ultimately turned into a sea creature was so fitting. So funny 🤣 4y

I think the Dashwoods would have enjoyed poke as part of their seafood-heavy diet in this book although ahi tunas are big enough that “The Alteration” in the book would have made them pretty formidable. 😱🐟

Our director bought us poke bowls for lunch. 🎉🐟🍚🎉One thing my introvert soul appreciates about social distancing is that everyone eats in their office or at their desk now so I get to read instead of have to socialize.😆

I thought this book was a riot. The absurdity continues in this week‘s chapters, but I‘m still 😂.

Lucy Steele manages to prattle on obliviously about her secret engagement while a damned sea monster is literally attacking Elinor. She did shut up for a minute and save her.

Sub-marine Station Beta is an underwater London, which is cool despite being the worst idea ever.

Brandon‘s face tentacles stiffening and swaying romantically for Marianne might be a bit...much, though.😖

BarkingMadRead I bailed on this one, I don‘t know why, but it annoyed me lol I should really try again 4y
sprainedbrain @BarkingMadRun I can totally respect bailing! It‘s really very campy and I get annoyed when it‘s just straight S&S for chapters on end. 4y
katy4peas Haha. I bailed too, but I like your recaps! I‘ll just read the book through your comments. Haha! 😉 @sprainedbrain @BarkingMadRun 4y

bio_chem06 Absurd 🤣 4y
mollyrotondo I just caught up! The part with Lucy going on and on about her and Edward all while Elinor is fighting off the sea monster was a riot. Lucy would totally do that. And the gigantic lobster attack was super funny too. I love how the women are so strong and they are the ones fighting the monsters and saving each other. It‘s so fitting for a Jane Austen story especially if Jane Austen wrote action books. 4y

I don‘t know about y‘all, but this book has me 🤣

While I do catch myself skimming a paragraph here and there were it‘s just S&S exactly, I love the altered parts so much. I will go into more detail in comments and hide the spoilers (if they can be called that for a silly book like this), but how about Mrs. Dashwood busting that oar over her knee and stabbing the sea serpent in the eye? 😳😂

What do you all think so far?

#PemberLittens

⬇️⬇️⬇️

sprainedbrain Ok first, this ‘alteration‘ into a sea monster-filled hellscape is fun. Barton cottage is now a rickety two-story seaside shack tottering on a rocky promontory above the sea? Barton is an archipelago of remote scary islands... and Omg Sir John is a semi-retired adventurer and lady Middleton is a island princess from a place he conquered. Upon the ladies‘ arrival sent them the traditional gifts of exotic plants, fish and a big bag of opiates. 😂 (edited) 4y
sprainedbrain I can‘t stop giggling about Lady Middleton... ‘She was reserved and cold, as if having been stolen from her native village in a burlap sack and made to be servant and helpmate to an Englishman many years her senior, for some reason sat poorly with her.‘ And Mrs. Jennings, also kidnapped in a sack after her husband was killed, is so called because Sir John can‘t pronounce her name. Ok that‘s horrible, but I‘m loving the sarcasm and snark. 4y
sprainedbrain Poor Colonel Brandon has actual face tentacles. Now when he‘s rapt by Marianne‘s piano forte skills: ‘He sat in silence, tentacles writhing; his hands folded in his lap, making only the low gurgling noise that his sinuses always emitted, unbidden, from his lunatic‘s nightmare of a face.‘

All of that, and he‘s STILL on the wrong side of five and thirty. And his fishy face fingers become rigid when he‘s animated. Good god. 😂😂😂
4y
See All 15 Comments
mollyrotondo I also love every time they make fun of Brandon for his fish face! Even when they are trying to be nice about it, they can‘t help pointing out that he is gross looking. I assume playing on the fact that Marianne finds him unappealing for being old. Also what is up with this pentagon Elinor keeps seeing? 4y
sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo yes, Elinor is clearly getting a bit of whatever weirdness poor Margaret is picking up on. And everyone is ignoring Margaret! (edited) 4y
mollyrotondo @sprainedbrain yes they are used to all this horrible fish monster stuff but think Margaret is pretending about the mountain ?! I love it lol 4y
mklong I am almost finished with this one and I go back and forth between thinking it doesn‘t need to be this long and admiring his commitment to following the original chapter by chapter. It is hilarious though 🤣 4y
sprainedbrain @mklong Right?? I guess that‘s why Jane is still credited as co-author... he‘s not straying from the original plot line! 😂 4y
bio_chem06 I just can‘t get into it. I feel like they are adding too much sea stuff, but maybe that‘s the point and it‘s lost on me😕 I think it could be better with less but better placed jokes (edited) 4y
sprainedbrain @bio_chem06 it‘s definitely trying pretty hard. The book is very campy! 4y
bio_chem06 @sprainedbrain campy! That‘s the BEST description😃 4y
mollyrotondo @sprainedbrain yes is campy is the word! I mean Willoughby alway wearing a scuba suit and flippers?! Of course Willoughby would walk around like that. 4y
sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo apparently it puts his ‘physique‘ to good advantage. 😅 Freaking Willoughby. 😂 4y

About 5 chapters in on the #PemberLittens #SeaMonstersBuddyRead & it‘s making me chuckle so far. Some of the quotes & especially that Elinor‘s painting has become whittling driftwood sculptures. I keep imagining it—likely due to growing up a couple of hours from the Oregon Coast where there‘s driftwood aplenty. We didn‘t sculpt it but we made many crafts that included little seagulls & rope & then there were the ones with googly eyes! Memories!😆

Hey, #PemberLittens!

Several people are planning to read this bananapants retelling... anyone interested in a buddy read? I can‘t help but notice it has 50 chapters, just like the original, but I don‘t want to do chapter a day. Thoughts on when/how to buddy read it are welcome and encouraged!

I think I‘ve tagged the people who commented on my post last weekend that they were planning to read this, but of course anyone and everyone is welcome!

katy4peas I would like a buddy read, but it will have to be more like 2-3 chapters a day since the chapter a day took almost two months and we don‘t have that long don‘t have that long for the retellings! I ordered my copy! 5y

Daisey I would love to join on this one, but my summer is too busy and already too many book commitments. I look forward@to seeing the posts! 5y
Bookwormjillk Maybe we could say 5 chapters a week instead of a chapter a day 5y
sprainedbrain @Bookwormjillk I would like to read it a bit faster... so we can have it done before we start P&P. From what I‘ve seen, I think this book is pretty fluffy and silly, so I was thinking a couple chapters each day or maybe 10-15 per week? 5y
sprainedbrain @4thhouseontheleft are you interested in a buddy read for this one? 5y
Dcueto What?!?!?? This looks awesome 5y
alisiakae @sprainedbrain Maybe, but I think I am going to focus on the Trollope book first. I read the P&P and Zombies and didn‘t like it, but just realized this is a completely different author! 5y

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters | Jane Austen, Ben H. Winters
Pickpick

I love Jane Austen, and I think she would appreciate the silliness of the quirk classics spins on her books. However, Ben Winters' addition of sea monsters felt a little forced. There was a subtle but still jarring difference between his diction and syntax and Austen's, characters were majorly changed, and plot points added, seriously reworked, or removed completely for the sake of sea monsters. Overall a fun read but not perfect.

The Pride & Prejudice & Zombies movie was fun, but I think a Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters movie would be even more fun! Sea monsters!!!

I ❤️ this bookmark way too much.

LauraBrook I bought that bookmark for my Litsy Secret Santa! I don't think any of the books I bought her are less than 500 pages. 😊 Have you read this book - or are you reading it now? 8y
MaleficentBookDragon @LauraBrook I haven't read it yet. It was a holiday book club swap pick. 8y
Jenni_Capps I have a mug that says that on it! 😊😊 8y

I'm in a season of life where I'm parenting a middle schooler. It's hard y'all. Eye rolls, sass talk, death stares, Jedi mind tricks and hormones. And then I see the book she checked out from the school library and my heart melts into a puddle 😀

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Go mom! You raised her right, even if her hormones are raging at the moment! 8y
LauraBeth Aww - thanks for the encouraging words @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😺 8y
Mccall0113 I see your middle schooler. And I will raise you a high schooler and a toddler. Yikes! Hang in there 8y

Neverlistless I'm glad you got a little dose of encouragement!! I'm not looking forward to the middle school days... They were the hardest for ME and I'm not sure I can successfully guide anyone else through them! 8y
Gulfsidemusing It's such a roller coaster... but I must say she has great taste in books. Hang in there! 8y
LauraBeth I hear you @Neverlistless. I'm constantly thinking, "okay - how do I enforce to her to be kind, love and accept yourself, accept others...without also giving her some weird complex... 8y
LauraBeth Awww - thanks @Lakesidemusing. I asked her about the book and her eyes lit up while talking about it. She said, "I'm finding I have to slow down when I read it to fully understand it but I really like it!" 8y
Flaneurette I can relate...I can't seem to ever say the right thing to my 13 yr old daughter. I think we have dueling hormones- hers ramping up and mine in a death spiral😁 she recently read Sherman Alexie but is now reading Insurgent 8y
ImaginativeMom Oh my gosh my seventh grader!!! If I hear one more deep sigh, someone's going down. Glad she's at least reading. 😊👍🏼 8y
LauraBeth Lol @Flaneurette - dueling hormones 😹 is there a dueling banjos rendition for this? Glad to see that yours is reading as well though! 8y
LauraBeth Yep @ImaginativeMom - that's where we're at too - 7th grade. The good news is the the opportunities to embarrass her are endless! This morning I told her I'd drive her to school. We passed a few kids who had missed the bus (boys!) and I told them to get in, I'd drive them. Bonus points: I was wearing pjs, I have a small car, I still had pool noodles in the car. Oh the shame 😹😹 And embarrassment! 8y
ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth I love it!!! My kind of mom. 😂👊🏼👏🏼 8y
Lynnsoprano I taught middle school for 14 years before I retired. You'll survive and so will she. She's already demonstrating what a good mom you are. 8y
LauraBeth Thanks @Lynnsoprano - for your sweet words and for teaching middle schoolers for 14 years! 😀 8y
