A remarkable historical novel by the bestselling author of Fates and Furies Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. At first taken aback by the severity of her new life, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family, for her homeland, for the passions of her youth with something new to her: devotion to her sisters, and a conviction in her own divine visions. Marie, born the last in a long line of women warriors and crusaders, is determined to chart a bold new course for the women she now leads and protects. But in a world that is shifting and corroding in frightening ways, one that can never reconcile itself with her existence, will the sheer force of Marie's vision be bulwark enough? Equally alive to the sacred and the profane, Matrix gathers currents of violence, sensuality and religious ecstasy in a mesmerising portrait of consuming passion, aberrant faith and a woman that history moves both through and around.

Such a disappointment. I wanted to like this book. I like Groff‘s use of language, but this book was terrible. I felt like the author couldn‘t decide if she wanted this to be historical fiction or outright fantasy. It was so unbelievable and historically inaccurate that it was ludicrous. I don‘t want to post spoilers, but about 2/3 of the way through the book the story becomes ridiculous. I couldn‘t suspend disbelief enough to finish this.

AliD73 I want to add to my review that I understand the genre of fantasy, and I have enjoyed such novels many times over the years. The author of this novel, however, seemed to me to be unable to decide if she wanted this to be fantasy or historical fiction. Even with fantasy, the author must inspire the reader to suspend disbelief enough to believe the fantastical elements of the story. Groff failed to do that. The story just didn‘t work; It was silly. (edited) 4d
BarbaraBB I know what you mean 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4d
AliD73 @BarbaraBB Thank you. This book seems to be universally loved; I‘m definitely in the minority regarding my opinion of it. It‘s good to know there are other readers who agree with me. 4d
TrishB I don‘t think there‘s anything wrong with having a different opinion to the majority 🤷‍♀️ that‘s why we all read. I like reading different opinions. It‘s happened to me many times. 4d

I picked this one in impulse at the library, not knowing much about it but knowing I‘ve seen the book around. It is not what I expected from the title. The year is 1158 and a young girl is sent to a faraway abbey. She doesn‘t want to be a nun and has little religious feeling but she is an orphan and her pedigree is troubled. I didn‘t think it sounded particularly interesting at first but the prose brings it alive and the story moves fast.

I liked but didn‘t love this story of Marie. Things I liked were the development of Marie as a character, and her slow path to wisdom and acceptance. Didn‘t need the graphic sex scenes and some of the environmental references seemed anachronistic. But it did send me diving into online rabbit holes exploring part of English history that I knew little about. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Set in the 12th century the story follows Marie de France and her removal to an abbey by Eleanor of Aquitane. Full of the triumph of the feminine overcoming the poverty and dismissal of all things female, this book is more lyric tale than narrative. Short and clearly well researched it was only a 3⭐️ for me although I suspect I am in the minority.

EliNeedsMoreShelves I also felt kinda meh about this one. 2w
Ruthiella You are not alone. I disliked it. 2w
Tamra This was a so-so for me too. 2w

Booksnchill @EliNeedsMoreShelves @Ruthiella @tamra @britt_brooke I have gone and looked at reviews from others and see that this is not an uncommon reaction. This was my first Groff and I read it because the subject and length appealed- oh well. 2w
britt_brooke @Booksnchill I‘m happy you saw my review! It was my first Groff, too. Interesting premise, and beautiful writing, but couldn‘t hold my attention. (edited) 2w
Tamra @Booksnchill I was really looking forward to it - the premise was intriguing! But it felt sorta of flat or mono dimensional. Hard to put my finger on it. 2w
Booksnchill @Tamra agreed, like there was an agenda I was not following. 2w
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Booksnchill I felt like the author was purposefully holding readers at a distance from the story. Like, she left the facts in but took out all the emotion. 2w
Booksnchill @EliNeedsMoreShelves a very interesting observation- I love the way people have considered this book and not just dismissed it. I found the large leaps of time left me thinking the best bits of Marie were perhaps found there? 2w
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Booksnchill I very much understand this. I will say that Groff certainly left me with the urge to learn more about Marie, if nothing else. 2w

I disliked Fates and Furies, but after seeing so many great reviews about this book I decided to try. I've discovered though that I'm just not a fan of Lauren Groff.

While the prose is beautiful, and Marie is a strong character, the lack of plot made this tedious to finish. I did like how this started and ended, but the rest of the book felt repetitive and bored me.

Luckily the narrator did a wonderful job reading it or I might have bailed.

I feel like this is a book I‘m going to want to read again.

I love the ways Marie kept thinking up to improve her life and that of her sisters, and that when challenged about how her status has grown and how the abbey flourished, she always manages to twist things back to her favor.

The writing is beautiful and tender. I loved the ending.

Does anyone have an opinion if Matrix could be considered “genre-blending”? I need to fit that category for the #ReadICT Challenge.

Hooked_on_books I‘d say Matrix blends historical fiction and feminist lit, so yes! 2w

It's not often that I read historical fiction, however I have read enough hf to know what I am looking for. Groff's latest checked all of the boxes, & more, in her visionary & feminist novel about Marie de France. How much of it was true? I don't know, & I honestly don't care a whole lot. If I wanted a book that adhered strictly to “the truth“ I'd read a book about European history covering this time period, not a novel. Here is the publisher's👇

vivastory description of the beginning of Matrix, “Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease.“ Marie must make a place for herself at her new abbey & in the process reveals herself to be a remarkable individual. This one had 3w
vivastory interesting moments of palace intrigue in the abbey alongside hard truths & memorable descriptions of Marie's visionary states. This was a stellar first read of '22! Pictured here during a brief intermission with a cup of hot chocolate this afternoon as we received our first inclement weather of the season this morning. #NewYearWhoDis @monalyisha @megabooks (edited) 3w

vivastory @monalyisha I love Groff, so I might be a bit biased, but it seems like even people who typically don't care for her work have been deeply moved by it. merelybookish Great review! I also didn't care if it was historically accurate. That wasn't the point! It just burned with some other truth. 2w

My last read of 2021

I enjoyed Groff‘s writing & found the development of the Abbey fascinating. Loved how quick witted Marie is & how she managed 2 outsmart everyone who attempted to challenge her authority. The secondary characters were great to & it was interesting to see what Groff imagined life in an all-female enclave would look like.

Absolutely loved this one - so intelligently written and such a powerful character. Some reviewers complain that Groff gives short shrift to Marie‘s lais, but who cares, that‘s not the point. The point is Groff‘s vision of Marie, which is sublime. By the way, Marie reminds me of Abbess Hildegard of Bingen - please listen to her music while you read the book! Best recordings of Hildegard‘s music are by the Gothic Voices and Sequentia.

Cathythoughts Sounds like wonderful music. If I ever reread this I will listen... 👍 3w
batsy Thanks for the rec. Been listening to some Hildegard of Bingen interpretations by Stevie Wishart, Guy Sigsworth, & Sinfoye because Susanna Clarke mentioned it wrt her Piranesi writing process and it's quite exquisite. 3w
QuintusMarcus Right on, @batsy ! I love Stevie Wishart and Sinfonye, but their recordings are hard to find. If you can find it, Sinfonye‘s Gabriel‘s Greeting is one of my favorite Christmas albums. 3w

There is a lush quality to Groff‘s writing that doesn‘t appeal to me. Sounds weird maybe to state I don‘t like “beautiful” prose, but often I don‘t. Also, as historical fiction goes, this leans heavily on the fiction and I never once believed I could be reading about a real person/events. Lastly, I felt very little plot momentum or tension. Marie is faced with a challenge, she surmounts it...next chapter, next surmounted challenge.

#ToB #ToB2022

CarolynM I know what you mean about "lush" writing. It often strikes me as trying too hard. 3w
Ruthiella @CarolynM Glad I‘m not alone! 3w
Megabooks Yeah, if you don‘t like beautiful words, this isn‘t the book for you because the plot is pretty thin. 3w
See All 16 Comments
Ruthiella @Megabooks Yes. I was hoping the historical parts would help, but alas. 3w
Cinfhen Fabulous review. I did the audio, which was brilliant but I didn‘t love this book as much as others did. I do love beautiful prose, but not “flowery” writing. I think the prose here added to my enjoyment because there wasn‘t much of a plot but I got caught up in the setting, time, and place. 3w
Ruthiella @Cinfhen I was thinking this might have worked better for me on audio...then again, this is my third Groff and I think she‘s just not an author for me. 3w
Cinfhen I‘m starting to feel that way about certain authors too. I‘m on the fence with Groff, but she‘d be a #BorrowNotBuy for me, much like Rooney and now I‘m thinking Powers as well. 3w
squirrelbrain I listened to this on audio, which I think helped, as I loved it. I often find that audio is better for ‘flowery‘ writing as I‘d skip huge chunks if I was actually physically reading. 3w
Ruthiella @squirrelbrain I agree that lush, descriptive writing sometimes works better when read to me...it helps create the atmosphere. 3w
BarbaraBB You nailed what I thought. 3w
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB Yeah, I don‘t think it was the fact that you read a translation. I need to make the same “note to self” that you did! 😆 3w
BarbaraBB Haha! So many books, I really need that kind of notes to self! 3w
batsy This not about Groff as I've only read a short story or two, but I have my own quibbles with certain types of "lush" or "beautiful" writing, so I hear you. 3w
Cathythoughts I take your point about Marie and the repetition. I did love it , though it was a tough read in terms of concentration. I like Groff, I loved Fates and Furies And looking forward to Arcadia (edited) 3w
Ruthiella @batsy I think I definitely value plot and character over writing style in general, though there are exceptions. 3w
Ruthiella @Cathythoughts If you love her writing, then I can see where one would love the immersion effect of Marie and the abbey in this novel. 3w

Well colour me shocked, but I LOVED this book! 🙌 Just like Marie the character at its center, this book burns. I was swept up in that radiating brilliance that pulsed throughout. It was so immersive and rich and I loved Marie, the nuns, and the abbey. Groff did her homework but to call this historical fiction feels limiting. This is not about recreating a world from the past but imagining something new entirely. Amazing!

Lauren Groff did a great job researching this book set in a 12th century abbey. Marie spends her whole life there after being banished there by Eleanor of Acquitaine. I‘ve studied this period and I found this work ambitious in addressing feminist themes, the challenges faced by a women‘s entity in a man‘s world and how the formidable Marie took on the challenge and care of those at the convent. She was incredible!

So sorry @Megabooks, I know you loved this one but it didn‘t work for me. Not at all. I read the Dutch translation, that may be a reason but then again, I really missed a plot and I felt nothing for Marie. #ToB22

Note to self: stop reading Lauren Groff (I felt this way more or less about all her books)

TrishB This was the first Groff I read and loved it 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 1mo
BarbaraBB @TrishB I think the language adds a lot to this book. I should have read it in English but even then I doubt I would have appreciate the language like a native can! 1mo
sarahbarnes This is hilarious 😂 I was just telling @merelybookish that I haven‘t read this one because I remember how much she hated Fates and Furies. I still haven‘t read anything by Groff. 1mo

squirrelbrain I didn‘t expect to like this one (the blurb sounded rather boring 😬), but I did! 1mo
TrishB I may try one of her others 🤞🏻 and I know what you mean about language it can make or break a translation. 1mo
Laughterhp I haven‘t read any Groff yet, but I own 2 of her books and just recently bought this one. 😬😬 1mo
EvieBee I‘ve tried so hard to read her books and I think we‘re just not meant to be. 🤗 1mo
Cinfhen I listened on audio and the narration was excellent but I found the story boring. This was just ok for me. Very different from Fates & Furies though. 1mo
Ruthiella I still need to read this but I didn‘t like F&F or Arcadia. I suspect it isn‘t the translation but her style isn‘t for you (or me). 1mo
Brimful I loved this book but I can understand your point of view! 1mo
Megabooks Sorry you didn‘t like it. I was okay on F&F and bailed on Arcadia, but I loved this. Perhaps she‘s not for you, but I don‘t know if reading it in translation hurt too. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
KarenUK I‘m with @Megabooks & @squirrelbrain … I really enjoyed this (and I loved Fates & Furies) but I think she is definitely not for everyone! 😉 1mo
Well-ReadNeck @BarbaraBB ya know, I kinda feel the same. Monsters of Templeton is my favorite of her books and I really did not like F & F, which is such a fan fav. 1mo
Kimberlone I wanted to love this but the lack of plot made it hard for me to engage. I thought it was just okay… 1mo
Cathythoughts I found it a hard read at times .. but I loved the whole feel of the book 1mo
kwmg40 Reading the different opinions on this one makes me think that it's the perfect ToB book! This is next on my list. 1mo
britt_brooke Barely a “so-so” for me. Very boring. 1mo
BarbaraBB @kwmg40 It is a real #ToB book, you‘re right about that! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Well-ReadNeck I didn‘t get the hype about F&F either. 1mo
BarbaraBB @britt_brooke That‘s the word. Boring! 1mo

Next up and a break from mysteries. Based on my previous experiences reading Groff, I will either love it (Arcadia) or loathe it (Fates & Furies).

sarahbarnes I‘ve been avoiding this one since I remembered you saying how much you hated Fates and Furies. Good to know you liked another of her books! 1mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders I loathed Fates and Furies as well, but LOVED The Monsters of Templeton. Hoping I love Matrix as well. 1mo
BarbaraBB I just posted my review…. Was no fan of Fates and Furies either. I kind of liked Florida but not that much. 1mo

merelybookish @sarahbarnes And some people love that book. It seems to hit one way or the other. I found it ridiculously over written. But I read Arcadia for the TOB one year and it was my favourite of that tourney. So we shall see. 1mo
merelybookish @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Haha. Yes. I feel like Fates & Furies was a concept book and eventually the concept got tired. 1mo
merelybookish @BarbaraBB I see you're not a fan. 😂 I went in knowing I might bail. I don't plan to stick with it if it annoys me. 1mo
Megabooks Probably my fave fiction this year! 1mo
Cathythoughts Interesting! I loved Fates … and I loved this one. I must read Arcadia soon. Looking forward to your thoughts 1mo
merelybookish @Megabooks Wow, high praise! And you read a ton! 1mo
merelybookish @Cathythoughts I am liking it so far. 🤞 1mo

Penny_LiteraryHoarders @merelybookish nice summary!! Yes!! 1mo
merelybookish @Cathythoughts Yes I saw that! He also picked Fates & Furies when it was out so he's a Groff fan! 1mo

I am not sure how I feel about this… Some beautiful writing, and a strong man character, but not much plot necessarily? Enjoyed the portrait of female-centered power and sapphic threads, but didn‘t always follow or care much about the underlying story. It‘s a little outside of genres I usually go for and that is probably some of it.

BarbaraBB I know what you mean… I‘m having a hard time finishing it. 1mo

#WeeklyForecast 50/21

I am slowly making my way through Matrix for the #ToB22. Waiting for something, not sure what. This week I‘ll finally read Fresh Water for Flowers, buddyreading with @mklong and @monalyisha . If there‘s time left I‘d like to start my #doublespin: Dead Girls‘ Class Trip - that title 🤍

Cinfhen I LOVED Fresh Water …but I don‘t want my enthusiasm to kill your expectations @mklong @monalyisha @BarbaraBB - it‘s the type of book that the less you know, the better 1mo

Beautiful writing. I loved the darkness, the visceral , and especially the ritual. The epic story of Marie‘s life in the 12th century.. she is sent by Queen Eleanor to a life in the abbey.
It was hard work at times , requiring concentration , but I‘m glad I read it. Groff really captures this time.
I‘m looking forward to Arcadia.

BarbaraBB Reading this right now! Thanks for the thumbs up! 1mo

This book was very educational.I can‘t say that I ever read a book about a group of nuns who lived during the Middle Ages. While the story was interesting,I found that it was slow paced. The author has a beautiful style of writing, but I had trouble with the middle age terminology and had to stop to look many words up.I read this book as part of a reading group that I belong to,and can‘t wait to see what the group members think about it when we meet.

This started of beautifully, and then it devolved into a simple narration of Years, without ever focusing on any plot string. Characters came and went, I never cared about anything, because time would just jump another 5 years ahead and it would be different anyway.

#Matrix @Kdgordon88 #historicalfiction

rachelsbrittain I kind of felt the same about this one tbh. Wound up being less interesting than I had hoped 2mo

This book checked off all my boxes, so it should have been a great read. Alas, it fell flat. I never did feel emotionally connected with any of the characters, in a positive or negative way. I was engaged enough to listen to the end and Groff does have some amazing descriptive powers, hence the so-so rating.

I‘m curious about Fates & Furies and it was available on audio so I‘m going to it check it out.

FelinesAndFelonies I was just meh on this one too. I felt like there were too many characters in the book. Their movement in and out of the story made it hard to connect with any of them. 2mo
Ruthiella I‘ll be curious to hear what you think about 2mo

Cathythoughts I‘m still reading .. I agree .. there are parts that blew me away … but I‘m so - so as I get to the end. It will be a pick for me .. but not as brilliant as it started out. 2mo
Cathythoughts I did love Fates & Furies .. would look forward to your thoughts on that one 2mo
Tamra @Cathythoughts yes, it has some very good parts so I stuck with it! For me it just didn‘t live up to its potential. (Ha! I cringe with my commentary because I certainly can‘t write so who am I to judge?!) 🤪 2mo
Tamra @Cathythoughts I hope it‘s a winner! 2mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders Didn‘t like Fates and Furies at all. LOVED The Monsters of Templeton. 2mo
thewallflower0707 I finished #Matrix today and I have to agree with you. For me, it started very strong and then it just skipped over the most interesting part and just continued to be a list of new characters, characters who die, new projects, new visions. No actual story behind it 😔 2mo

When I found out that the GR awards were posted a few days ago I was at dinner with a friend. I lamented the fact that I would be unable to vote in several categories as the majority of the new books that I read are still backlist from at least a couple of years ago. Talk about serious FOMO! Luckily, @monalyisha gave me a stellar match featuring numerous 2021 books on my TBR! This will be my third year of #NewYearWhoDis & am happy to be matched👇

vivastory with my longtime Litsy pal @megabooks The only books that I have read on her list (loved both of them) are # 5 & 7. I already had # 11 on my Dec TBR & tentatively # 16 as well. The four pictured in my collage are the selections that I will read for sure in January. (edited) 2mo

Megabooks What‘s so wonderful about @monalyisha ‘s match is that I was hoping to get someone with a lot of backlist titles! 😃 Matrix may have surpassed Station 11 as my all-time fav. Great book to kick off the year! Bourdain was amazing. Really interested to see if you love it as much. There are two documentaries on my TBW list that go well with Cultish - the LuLaRoe one on Amazon and the Weigh Down one on HBO. Cultish really changed my thinking ⬇️ 2mo
Megabooks ⬆️ about MLMs for sure. Just fascinating. Nightbitch is one that I think about every day. It brings up so many questions about art and life and motherhood in a very creative way. So glad you picked those. Enjoy! 2mo

vivastory @Megabooks I have high hopes for all 4 & I don't imagine I'll be disappointed. I will definitely check out the documentaries after finishing Cultish. Another one that would supplement it well is Generation Hustle on HBO Max. Speaking of documentaries there are a couple I plan on watching after reading Empire of Pain. If my BP can handle it. Looking forward to diving into these! 2mo
BarbaraBB Fab list please read 1 and 9 too, you‘ll love both 💜 2mo
Megabooks @vivastory I loved Generation Hustle! As far as the opiates, Crime of Century on HBO was great. Keefe is also on it. It is also about Subsys, and I‘m dying to read this Jan 2022 release about that debacle. 2mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB Both of them are on my TBR. Honestly there's not a single book on the list I'm not interested in. 2mo

Chelsea.Poole @Megabooks I‘m loving your list! 👯‍♀️ We have several similar titles and one I regret NOT putting on mine popped up on yours. You make me more and more curious about 2mo

Lauren Groff writes in many different genres and suddenly her most recent novel, on the National Book Award finalists list and the ToB long list, is historical fiction. Marie de France is removed from her parents' court to go join and run an impoverished abbey. Most of the story focuses on the 12th century and the characters found there, with some threads of mysticism, romance between women, and feminism. ↘️

ReadingEnvy These sound like themes I would enjoy but I felt disconnected or maybe underwhelmed by the book itself. Or maybe I was distracted by the audio. Either way, it wasn't really for me, but it can be for you. 2mo
Ruthiella I‘m definitely going to wait to see if this makes the TOB 2022 shortlist before I take the plunge. 3rd time might be the charm...🤔? 2mo

5 ⭐️. What a brave, daring, & striking book. This
book is the reason I ❤️ reading - 📚 that shape the ground I walk on in search and wonderment of all that is life. It‘s about reimagining a life as it was & as it could have been. It‘s about the power of a community of women who are punished for violating gendered expectations, yet use their individual strengths to collectively build a sisterhood of courage, intelligence, wisdom, & beauty. Wow.

What would life have been like for unmarriageable women in the past? This account of Marie the abbess- matrix- of an abbey which she transforms, provides some insights. Marie is flawed, powerful, mystical and loving and I loved her generous but frank assessments of her fellow nuns. The story of Eleanor of acquitane was skilfully woven into the story providing an alternative perspective on women and power. A fine unusual and enjoyable book

As abbess, she sees how dangerous a free-thinking nun could be. If there was another Marie in her flock,it would be a disaster. She feels a sharpness of guilt from time to time;yet she keeps her nuns in their holy darkness with their work and their prayer. She justifies it by telling herself this is how she keeps her daughters in innocence. This is a second Eden.
