Elizabeth Bear‘s novella is a wildly imaginative murder mystery set in India 100 years or so in the future. It‘s fascinating not just in the murder—classic locked room—but in details. There‘s the VR addiction that one might expect but loads of other details. The main character is a woman sub-inspector in the police force. This book is fascinating and boring, at once. The idea—a guy who does nothing but zip around various universes fixing broken time machines—is great. But he‘s depressed and fairly inarticulate so it feels like you‘re spending a lot of time with a morose 13-year-old even though he‘s supposedly 30-ish. I‘m half way through and I keep reading because occasionally there‘s something great, like the bit above. #scifi

I‘m rereading my Ngaio M collection. Marsh was an artist and there‘s a charged reality to the painting set-up but at the same time the murder is so entirely unlikely that it felt like an enormous joke. Are elaborate murders even written these days? #mystery

The most fascinating thing about this book is its vivid descriptions of Japanese convenience stores. Utterly opposed to America‘s warm, chaotic 7/11 stores, characterized by junk food and chewing tobacco, these are gleaming white temples selling pyramids of rice balls, staffed by a chorus line of part-time workers. The heroine is on the spectrum—and I didn‘t like the way the stores became an over-wrought metaphor for a differently abled mind.

This book kept me up from 2:30-5:30 am! It‘s a fun plot—a tiresome teenager has super-powerful powers and ends up in an alternate West Point under the real West Point. I never liked her much, but the story‘s twists kept me reading to an explosive conclusion. I definitely recommend—it kept surprising me, even with that familiar premise. #scifi #harrypotter

I found this book in a list of Best New Sci-Fi and I was frankly incredulous, given the amateurish cover. But—its great! This is one of the weirdest Pratchett books, I think. I just reread it, and I still never quite figured out the Darkness (metaphor? Reality?). To me, political/philosophical possibilities got in the way of a good story. Also the deep-down dwarfs were just too weird to provide a good-humored parallel, as Pratchett mostly does...am I way off-base? #pratchett #paranormal #satire

This is a case where the book and movie are like two different animals, scarcely the same genus, let alone species. The book is deep teenage angst, love, lust. The movie is a Disney version of a love story minus all the heady lack of boundaries that comes with youth—“call me by your name” makes no sense in the movie without claiming/exchanging/owning a lover‘s body. Box of Frogs (no listing) was fun—the heroine is snappy, frequently veers into tstl, & is matched with an irritated but powerful man—but it ends in a big cliff-hanger—next part out end of July. I didn‘t like that—tho I once released a novella in parts. To all those readers: I‘m sorry!!

This series is bananas—a bunch of superhero kids going to a secret college, training to fight super-powered criminals, finding trouble. Sound familiar? Yeah. Still: the characters are engrossing, the super-skills creative, good world-building, never wildly violent, a little #romantsy.. my favorite character is cynical Nick from Las Vegas whose super-power is ‘luck.‘ 4 books with some big surprises. #kindlelimited except the last of 4 (clever man!)

Life is run by hereditary classes, and the heroine is a servant, who scrambles around tunnels and serves the ruling families. But—big but—she‘s way more than that. He was complicated and dark—and I love the fact that he didn‘t lighten up after falling in Love, as if nothing had happened. But he did learn how to let himself love (sigh). And sexy? Wow? This is a crazy book—surrealistic, funny, thoughtful, with a lot to say about love and sex. Sometimes it‘s savage, and then unexpectedly sweet. Most true affection is lavished on sex dolls. If you like fiercely creative and weird literature, this novel is for you! I really enjoyed it.

I happen to have a thriving cooking reality show addiction, so this was right in my wheelhouse. A fantastic pastry chef goes to a new restaurant only to discover that her ex (the owner) is in a reality show. Her own romance takes a back seat to work but I found the pastry chef details fascinating (and intoxicating—she makes you long for dessert). #romantsy

The hero is a hotel bellboy when a rock star dies of an overdose—one thing leads to another (as it does in crazy creative books) and the ghost gets attached to Tyler. He can scarcely go to the bathroom by himself.
