American Gods. Illustrated Edition
American Gods. Illustrated Edition | Neil Gaiman
A special illustrated edition of American Gods by bestselling storytelling legend, Neil Gaiman. A dark and gripping epic that will thrill Games of Thrones devotees and Terry Pratchett fans alike. Illustrations by celebrated artist Daniel Egn?us. 'Original, engrossing, and endlessly inventive' - George R. R. Martin. If you are to survive, you must believe. Shadow Moon has served his time. But hours before his release from prison, his beloved wife is killed in a freak accident. Dazed, he boards a plane home where he meets the enigmatic Mr Wednesday, who professes both to know Shadow and to be king of America. Together they embark on a profoundly strange road trip across the USA, encountering a kaleidoscopic cast of characters along the way. Yet all around them a storm threatens to break. The war has already begun, an epic struggle for the very soul of America, and Shadow is standing squarely in its path.

This comes up from time to time and I‘m happy to see Gaiman‘s take on this. Every once in awhile and author will say that unless you‘re paying full price for a book you‘re stealing from them. This leads other authors have to jump in to defend libraries and used book stores AND remind people not to pirate books because that‘s what really hurts them. I love own books but I can‘t buy every one I read, and I definitely can‘t do it at full price.

CrowCAH A nice way to think of “used” books. 9h
Tamra Amen! 9h
SpaceCowboyBooks As a used bookseller I find it strange when authors don't like used bookshops. Everyday I turn new readers onto people's work, and most of us host reading events. I also often rescue books that would otherwise be pulped. 9h
jpmcwisemorgan @CrowCAH I agree! @Tamra I second that! @SpaceCowboyBooks I don‘t understand either. Fortunately, I‘ve not seen some of my favorite authors be jerks about used books. One even asks how people found their books and never seems to mind that a lot of us say used or the library. 6h

I did not plan this year well. Opted into 4 challenges and set myself a target of 52 books. So far I‘ve got down to 62 just to be able to do the challenges🙄 Crossed off two on the Coffee & A Good Book Challenge:

Audiobook: The Spotted Dog by Kerry Greenwood
Turned into a TV Show: American Gods by Neil Gaiman

Finally got around to reading this, having had it on my weekly forecast for about a month. And, wow, what a book! Gaiman writes such great prose, and the story hits so many themes. My only gripe is the interludes, some of which just served to interrupt the story rather than enhance it. I wonder if some of these were bits cut from the original version and later added back by Gaiman.

Lucy_Anywhere Have you seen the Amazon adaptation? I really enjoyed it 😊 1w
TheEllieMo @Lucy_Anywhere I haven‘t, but I‘ve heard about it; I hear Ian McShane is Wednesday, which sounds like perfect casting! 6d

This was a long listen, but an exciting one. It had a little bit of everything, and the full cast was amazing. I loved that Neil Gaiman made appearances as well with the "Coming to America" stories. There's a twist at the end that I wasn't expecting, but it pulled everything together.

I enjoyed the story immensely. The gods are fallible, humorous and powerful. I enjoyed the Egyptian gods and lakeside. The depiction of the areas I kind of skipped over. Probably because I have not been there. I kept looking forward to reading on my break. Now on to the next adventure.

I‘m not the biggest fan of the author‘s Sandman series, but have loved some of his other works (e.g. Norse Mythology), and can‘t deny that he has the gift of storyweaving. Still, this book was a leap of faith and one that ultimately paid off! Bringing together characters from world mythology was not only skillfully done, but also made for a genuinely fun read! If you have yet to both read the book and watch the show, please read the book first.

Some books and authors I just love to read again and again, and it always feels like the first time. Neil Gaiman is one of those authors for me! His writing has always been a comfort to me, and can calm me down no matter what is going on around me. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think I would go with Neverwhere, if pressed. Recently I just started reading the tagged book again. What are some books/authors you guys feel this way about? 💕📚

I got 100 followers! I haven‘t been popular anywhere so this made me smile.
Now the book! As someone who studies myths and loves Percy Jackson, I found it entertaining. This book, which encompasses many genres, is about an impending war between old gods (like Odin) and new gods (like the Media). The main character, Shadow, is a man thrown into the mix, and he‘s a lot more easygoing in this book than I would be. ~Everything is not what it seems.~

I decided quite awhile ago that, though I love Neil Gaiman as a person, his books aren‘t my thing. So why did 8 have a burning need al of sudden to re-read American Gods? It was like a serious food craving.

ravenlee I didn‘t much care for this one when it first came out, but for years now I‘ve been really wanting to read it again. But this time I won‘t pay sticker price! 7mo
Patchshank I think even if you don't like Neil Gaiman, there is a certain appreciation for Neverwhere and American Gods. It's just what I've observed. I'm a Neil Gaiman fan and like almost everything he's done. Stardust has been the only thing I haven't really liked. 7mo

Okay..

So I‘ve decided to put this book on hold (once again)

It‘s not that it isn‘t well written, because it is, but I‘m just not that gripped 😕

Neil Gaiman is such an incredible author, and I enjoyed his Norse mythology a lot, but I can‘t help feel this novel is a little too slow for a person as busy as me. I will finish it! I just need a break to go over some things and analyse it! I don‘t know, something about it just feels a bit off to me

julesG The only Gaiman I haven't finished (yet). It's slow and different from other Gaiman stories. 8mo
NeedsMoreBooks I totally understand your view. I have been reading and putting this on hold for the past 2 years 🤦🏻‍♀️ 8mo
Sweettartlaura I liked it... but found the ending anticlimactic 🤷🏻‍♀️. I still recommend it as a Gaiman pick. But you‘re not alone in your reticence with this one. 8mo

Smoky_Embers @Sweettartlaura Being a popular book, I was worried I‘d raise a few eyebrows with my review! I just can‘t seem to get hooked or excited for it unfortunately. I didn‘t enjoy the series either (which in my opinion, was awful). 8mo
BethM I feel the same! Loved Norse Mythology- should love this one as I‘m into the concept. But I just can‘t get into it, I‘ve tried numerous times. 8mo
Smoky_Embers @BethM glad I‘m not alone! Norse mythology was really good, I had such high hopes for this one 😭 8mo

I got lucky today. So lucky! 🍀 I found the final book of this set at a flea market. I had bought Black Dog and The Monarch of the Glen new, then found Anasi Boys used. Today I found the matching American Gods. 😊 After spending all week cleaning up tornado and flood damage, this was a happy reprieve. 💕

GingerAntics Do The Monarch of the Glen and Black Dog go with American Gods the same way Anasi Bous does, or are those separate Gaiman stories? I‘ll read them either way, honestly, I‘m just curious. I‘d love to spend more time in different parts of the American Gods world. (edited) 8mo

I'm not sure how many times I've read this. 6? 7? But it's been a while and after a disappointing re-read experience with Neverwhere I was a little worried. But it's still brilliant. Fun, clever, exciting and full of myth and mystery. I probably enjoyed it more this time than ever, in no small part due to this stunning Folio Society edition and new food for thought from the TV series. #FolioFreaks
