Witch ELM
Witch ELM | Tana French
A brilliant new work of suspense from "the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years." (Washington Post) From the writer who "inspires cultic devotion in readers" (The New Yorker) and has been called "incandescent" by Stephen King, "absolutely mesmerizing" by Gillian Flynn, and "unputdownable" (People), comes a gripping new novel that turns a crime story inside out. Toby is a happy-go-lucky charmer who's dodged a scrape at work and is celebrating with friends when the night takes a turn that will change his life - he surprises two burglars who beat him and leave him for dead. Struggling to recover from his injuries, beginning to understand that he might never be the same man again, he takes refuge at his family's ancestral home to care for his dying uncle Hugo. Then a skull is found in the trunk of an elm tree in the garden - and as detectives close in, Toby is forced to face the possibility that his past may not be what he has always believed. A spellbinding standalone from one of the best suspense writers working today, The Witch Elm asks what we become, and what we're capable of, when we no longer know who we are.

Low pick for this #authoramonth book. This was my second Tana French book and I think I can safely say she is not for me. I liked the mystery, but her characters are very unlikable to me. Not terrible, but so much else out there that I enjoy more!

Truthfully? This was very slow. It felt like it took ages to get to the meat of the mystery — and once it did, it was largely revealed quickly and anticlimactically. I wouldn‘t even label this as a mystery really - more like a crime novel with social commentary sprinkled about. French‘s trademark insane detail didn‘t do this favors because it just felt bogged down. Same story could have been told more succinctly. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #AuthorAMonth

I always have a bit of dread on a buddy read when I didn‘t enjoy the book. Especially when I didn‘t select it. This one falls into that uncomfortable bookish category for me.

I was kept interested in the whodunnit, but the characters didn‘t seem likable and the ending unbelievable. In a sensational sort of a way that left me disappointed. It was my first French novel so perhaps it wasn‘t the right one since she‘s so popular an author?

AlaMich It‘s not just you. I read In The Woods and found it just okay. I didn‘t like it enough to read another of her books. 1y
Jess_Read_This @AlaMich Whew.. thank you for letting me know I‘m not alone in my “meh”-ness. I‘m not really feeling like reading another either. This one read as just okay for me too. 1y
jlhammar This is my least fav French. Haven‘t read The Searcher yet, but did enjoy her Dublin Murder Squad series. I most enjoyed Broken Harbor, The Trespasser and Faithful Place. 1y
Jess_Read_This @jlhammar Ohh! Thank you for the recs! I figured there had to be better ones of hers due to her popularity. This one felt off to me and the detective questioning felt leading/weird. Thank you for letting me know which ones to try for another go at her books! 😄 1y

I just cannot finish this book. I have 12 hours left and it is just intolerable. The characters are not engaging at all, the story moves so slowly and it‘s just mostly the main character sort of going on and on, mostly complaining.

Didn't finish it last time and never reviewed it. So, all I felt after finishing it is that the ending is anti-climactic. Good start with the theme of love, nostalgia, bonding, then the sudden discovery n the growing tension. Quite jerk characters. But all happened for some bland reasons. The narrator's personal life is totally unimportant in the development of the plot. Didn't relish the novel. Like all for nothing. I sold the book with 15% off

So many mixed reviews for this one and I totally get it. Brevity is not a word you can use in conjunction with any Tana French books, this one least of all. I was still captivated by the highly unreliable narrator and the mystery of the skull in the backyard and could have forgiven almost any flaws until the ending which I hated. Not my favorite French by far but still an enjoyable ride.

What Toby thinks of as his charm is simply privilege. What‘s worse is that he doesn‘t seem able to empathize with other people and the problems they have. In other words, he‘s not the most endearing character. I‘m ok with that. This reminded me of something from the literary brat pack of the 1980‘s — drinking, smoking, casual drug using 20 somethings with means and secrets. My main issue was that it was too verbose, but I really did like it.

Cathythoughts Great review! Tana does go on a bit 😁.. but I really liked it too 3y

Ew. Ew. Ew. 1/2 ⭐️

It‘s like she‘s trying to teach a lesson about “boys being boys.” But she only uses her last breath to say “don‘t do that.” The whole book follows jerk characters doing jerk things. Described as a slow burn but it was more like someone rubbed my eyes with IcyHot.

Didn't like, didn't enjoy.

French is a talented writer, but I found this over-written. It dragged something chronic - 480 pages felt like 480,000 & I resented the time I spent on it. It felt flabby & in need of a severe edit. Toby's endless self-absorbed introspection got on my nerves. Then to add insult to the injury of the long-windedness, the ending was tedious & depressing. The confession scene was particularly excruciating.

Not for me.

Cathythoughts She‘s definitely an over-writer ... I loved this one. I suggested The Searcher for out IRL Bookclub... no one liked it 😬 ( except me ) 4y

I really liked this! I listened to the audio. Some parts (especially near the beginning), I lost a bit of interest, but that was just mostly Toby with his buddies. The story got much more interesting after Toby and his girlfriend Melissa moved in with Uncle Hugo. Really, the narrator was just fine. The last 2/3 of it definitely kept me interested and though a few things weren‘t necessarily twists, there were a few of those thrown in, as well.

I love Tana French. Her writing is sublime. I hated this character with every cell in my body. Which I guess is a testament to her. It‘s easy to write likeable characters; a little different to attempt a main character as unlikable as him. However Hugo and the Ivy House itself was beautifully rendered.

Susanita Good point about writing unlikeable characters. I know this book was polarizing, but I thought it was well done. 4y

This is a tough one. It is very slow and I actually considered DNFing it at one point, which I never do. It does get pretty good at the midway point and I felt that anyone could be the murderer. The later events blindsided me but felt unnatural to me. French‘s writing is always wonderful and she creates some well-rounded characters, but this was just . . . different. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for the tag @EadieB ! Tana French novels makes me think of cold weather. Holiday weekend I wan to finish my #LMBC reads so I can get them in the mail. I had planned to do a big batch of barley soup to also share with an elderly neighbor in need but work got in the way. So tomorrow. Had a delicious salad instead. This week, in light of the U.S. election it has been the movie version of Hamilton!

Bklover I love barley soup! Do you have a good recipe for it? 4y
EadieB Love your answers! Thanks for playing! 4y
SamAnne @Bklover one of the first soups I learned to make out of the old Moosewood cookbook. A vegetarian beef mushroom vegetable. I still riff on that one, but I'm no longer vegetarian. There is a delicious recipe where you caramelize the chopped onions in Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone by Deborah Madison (an excellent basic cookbook for everyone!). I make mine with beef, turkey or veggie stock, mushrooms (regular white, dried or fresh wild or combo 4y
SamAnne @Bklover Chopped carrots. Most people add celery (I don“t like celery) but I will sometimes add chopped celery root which I love. Onions, garlic. Moosewood recipe uses dill for the herb, but you can use thyme, a little rosemary. A half cup of sherry really rounds the flavor, or some white wine. Salt, pepper. A little soy sauce/tamari at the end for a little more salty if needed. Beef, turkey, chicken if you want. Easy to make and change up! 4y
Bklover Oh my goodness thank you! The recipe I‘ve used (I have only made it once) was pretty basic. Took a screenshot of your suggestions and am going to try some this weekend. I love the idea of the mushrooms - thank you again for this!!❤️ 4y

I wanted to love this book because I loved Tana French‘s Mulder Squad series, but this book was interminable. There are sections of the story that are shocking, but there are long stretches of the book where I kept thinking does this really add anything whatsoever to the storyline and will this never end. I‘ve been looking forward to her next book, so I hope it doesn‘t disappoint as much as this one did. ⭐️⭐️

I haven't read Tana French before but this absolutely gripped me,ch is impressive since most of the real “action“ happens at the start and the end with a slow-moving coagulation of unreliable memories and unreliable witnesses bubbles in between. It's just brilliantly written. The main mystery wasn't hugely difficult to solve but the characters and relationships and the way they were unpicked through time was wonderful to read.
