The Library and Other Stories
The Library and Other Stories | Ali Smith
A book of stories all about why books mean the world to us Why are books, in all their forms, so very powerful? What do the books we've read over our lives--our own personal libraries--make of us? What does the unravelling of our tradition of public libraries, so hard-won but now in jeopardy, say about us? The stories in Ali Smith's new collection, The Library and Other Stories, are about what we do with books and what they do with us: how they travel with us, friends for life; how they shock us, change us, challenge us, banish time while making us older, wiser, and ageless all at once; how they coax us endlessly to unexpected blossom; how they remind us to pay attention to the world we make.

Excellent short story anthology about more than libraries. Ali Smith writes about literature, memory, and connection. My favorite stories were "Last" and "The art of elsewhere". (Pictured is my local library ♥️)

I am not a great library patron. Usually I just pick up my holds and then I leave right away. Tonight I returned my books and then wandered the stacks. It was such a relaxing way to wind down from a crazy week—ai need to do this more often!

Nute I should try this! It does seem like a relaxing thing to do.🙂 5y

Not what I was expecting. I'm not a fan of short stories, generally; but, these were so short, and fairly funny, so, OK. Library-related tidbits between stories were interesting. I was expecting more of that.

I read the tagged book 3 years ago; I can‘t remember much about it, just that I didn‘t much rate it - clearly it didn‘t make an impression! Which is a shame, as I believe part of the aim was to highlight the rate at which public libraries have been closing in the UK.

I confess I, in my inactivity, contribute to those statistics, by not using my local library; I should make more use of it - it‘s barely half a mile from home!

I'm not a massive fan of her style and this just isn't holding my interest.

TrishB Not a big fan either. 6y
arlenefinnigan @TrishB I kind of like the seasons series but there's something a bit try-too-hard about her style isn't there? 6y
Cathythoughts I only read Autumn... I wasn‘t a fan 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
TrishB I‘ve read two and that‘s my limit if I still don‘t like them! @Cathythoughts 6y
arlenefinnigan I found there was enough plot and state-of-the-world-today reflection in the season novels to hold my interest, but in these short stories.... Nah. Just grating. 6y

2 things that I love a lot are Ali Smith and libraries. So when I saw this book, I was super excited! It was a good book, but left me feeling flat because my expectations were so high. A so-so rating is probably unfair, but it‘s hard for me to evaluate this book outside of my own expectations.

NCNY There was an article in the NY Times this week about these issues. It was eye opening. 7y
BethwithBooks @NCNY I read it too! I‘m really glad the conversation is starting to move into the mainstream 7y
tonyahoswalt I am currently a Acquisitions and Cataloging Librarian so I don't have that much access to the public, though I do work for a public library. I did spend 7 years working with the public though, including the homeless, so let me know if you want me to take the survey. I was also wondering if my fellow coworkers who work with the public but do not hold MLIS degrees, and are therefore not librarians, can participate? 7y
BethwithBooks Hi @tonyahoswalt !! The hardest part of this research has been limiting it to current public service Library employees because I know I am missing out on so many valuable voices but for the integrity of the research design unfortunately participants must currently be in a public services position. Your non-MLIS coworkers are more than welcome and encouraged to take the survey though and I thank you tremendously for sharing it with them! 7y
tonyahoswalt @BethwithBooks I understand! I will email the survey out to our staff and hopefully someone will be willing to help out! 7y

This is a "Jodi's Pick" from our own public library - one of my favourite librarians :)
It always baffles me when someone says they don't use the library - when my kids were little, it was one of our favourite places to go when we just needed to get out of the house.

#TBRtemptation post 3! The award-winning author provides a short story collection focuses on BOOKS!!! Why are they so powerful? What do our personal libraries convey to everyone else? What does the fragility of public libraries say about society? How do books travel with us? They shock, challenge, change us. Her main focus in all of this is the UK's public library system. I'm very interested in this! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Ali Smith is a new author for me and wow! It took me a bit to engage with her writing but once I did I was totally absorbed. These short stories are interspersed with beautiful passages about the meanings of libraries. The stories themselves are about books, authors, friendship, death, dreams and ideas - about how things shift and change. Many of them were surprisingly moving. #readharder #womanshortstories #bookriot

#SizzlinSummerBooks #day6 #Library This is an amalgamation of some of the libraries in my council area. In Australia, libraries are run & funded by local councils with money coming directly from the government, great because we have lots of libraries, bad because we don't have those amazing book sales you guys in the US have to raise money for your libraries. The library in the bottom left is my childhood library, a place I spent a lot of time in.

EchoLogical Wow! 😍 7y
Martta Same here in Finland. In a way I think it's a good thing they are not forced to make a profit to finance themselves. Libraries are after all there for educating people and sharing culture and giving people a place to develop themselves. They should really focuss on that. Making money in an industry like that is tough. In Finland they are building a new national library. It should be ready next year. Can't wait for it to open! 7y
rockpools So interesting. In the UK (as so many places) libraries are under pressure from council cuts. Ours has now been outsourced to a social enterprise/charity - they get the bulk of their funding from the council, but are free to raise more money any which way they can. @Martta 7y
See All 6 Comments
Martta @RachelO There have been cuts here as well but I haven't heard that they would have had to collect money other ways than the basic funding they get. Libraries are like museums here. They are pretty much funded by the government. Well, there are these really small ways they get money also. Like if you loose your library card you have to pay few euros for the new one (the first one is free) and then there are of course the fees if the book is late. 7y
LizzyM Most libraries in the US are funded by local and state taxes. Luckily, my library system is quite richly funded as a good portion of our taxes go directly to the library. And I live in a very red state in the US😜 Some but definitely not all libraries have sales to get rid of culled and excess donated books and to raise extra funds but mine doesn't - too much effort for not enough money. 😢 7y
LibrarianRyan In the US it varies state by state and even town by town. Some like Denver Public are funded by sales tax and others are funded by property taxes. But even property taxes can vary by levies and the type of public libraries. There are some states that offer no funding and must raise 100% of their funds. 7y

Random library pick because of the title. I wanted to like it, but her writing is just not for me. The best parts were the blurbs in between the stories, with different people ruminating about what their local libraries had meant to them while growing up.

It's gonna be a double library day. 😁 At lunch went here and later Sterling Heights Public Library! @Wife too bad you work in Royal Oak, otherwise we could do lunch together. #SCSPL

Wife I work midnight weekends. So pretty much any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday lunch is a good possibility. Thanks for thinking of me. I like the little book man at the library pic!😁🍕📚🍽 8y
CrowCAH @Wife awesome! Totally let me know if you want to meet up! Work is closer to 9 and I-94, and I have an hour, so plenty of time for driving and eating. 8y

#PublicLibraries #LibrariesofLitsy #PureGold. #LitsyLibrarians Stopped to return books today & of course I left with more, this collection of short stories among them. Can't wait to read! Photo is from dedication page. For all Littens, but especially Litten librarians

Pickpick

Short stories with a literary topic interspersed with intimate stories about the importance of public libraries. These libraries are based in the U.K. which have been threatened with closure or closed in a massive scale over the past 15 years. Ali Smith's stories and essays are intended to demonstrate what will be lost without them. Sometimes the only hope a person has is the public library. We see the many ways in these stories and essays.
