Sullivan and Brenna Aubrey, the winner of a story contest hosted by the Republic of Pemberley My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. If you just heaved a contented sigh at Mr. Darcys heartfelt words, then you, dear reader, are in good company. Here is a delightful collection of never-before-published stories inspired by Jane Austenher novels, her life, her wit, her world. In Lauren Willigs A Night at Northanger, a young woman who doesnt believe in ghosts meets a familiar specter at the infamous abbey; Jane Odiwes Waiting captures the exquisite uncertainty of Persuasions Wentworth and Anne as they await her familys approval of their betrothal; Adriana Trigianis Love and Best Wishes, Aunt Jane imagines a modern-day Austen giving her niece advice upon her engagement; in Diana Birchalls Jane Austens Cat, our beloved Jane tells her nieces cat tales based on her novels; Laurie Viera Riglers Intolerable Stupidity finds Mr. Darcy bringing charges against all the writers of Pride and Prejudice sequels, spin-offs, and retellings; in Janet Mullanys Jane Austen, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! a teacher at an all-girls school invokes the Beatles to help her students understand Sense and Sensibility; and in Jo Beverleys Jane and the Mistletoe Kiss, a widow doesnt believe shell have a second chance at love . . . until a Miss Austen suggests otherwise. Regency or contemporary, romantic or fantastical, each of these marvelous stories reaffirms the incomparable influence of one of historys most cherished authors. Look for special features inside. Grabbed this from my bookcase on a whim. Read the Introduction, & short stories “Jane Austen‘s Nightmare” by Syrie James, & “Jane Austen,Yeah,Yeah,Yeah” Both stories were widely different and entertaining in their own ways. I really enjoyed reading them. It‘s the kind of book for me that I will just dive into on and off when I feel like it.

Crinoline_Laphroaig I love Anthologies because you can just jump in from a bit. 3mo

#JaneAndTheExcellentReadalong Extra! Jane and the Gentleman Rogue is included in Jane Austen Made Me Do It. Listed on Goodreads as 11.5 of Jane Austen Mysteries. But #Pemberlittens actually falls between Book 3- Jane and the Wandering Eye and Book 4 - Jane and the Genius of the Place. It's lovely little fragment featuring our favorite Gentleman Rogue Lord Harold.🎩

#PemberLittens have spoken! Starting in January 2022, the group will:

🔹 Buddy read 3 books every 2 months (1 from each
category):

1. Something Austen wrote
2. Something Austen-related (fiction or non,
alternating every 2 months between books
about Austen and adaptations of her work).
3. Something by another female author.

🔹 Vote for the 3 books to read

More info/Link to vote ⬇️

sprainedbrain Voting will be open for the first week of December 2021 to choose our books for January/February 2022. Voting will open every two months so that all have time to get the books selected prior to the start of reading.
2y
sprainedbrain Once books are chosen, buddy read plans will be made amongst those opting to read each book. Read what you like, skip what you don‘t want to read; read on your own schedule and join discussions later, or read chapter-a-day if others chose to do so. Hosts/buddy read leaders for each book will be chosen as we go along (it shouldn‘t be me all the time!) and we will keep things casual and fun. 2y
sprainedbrain I‘ve kept my Zoom account, so any time we have interest in watch parties, those will be organized as well. 2y
See All 40 Comments
sprainedbrain Voting for January/February is open now: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3WYZH2D

For our second book this time, we are choosing either a fiction or nonfiction book about Jane… when we vote for March/April books, we will choose an adaptation of Austen‘s work for the second book.
2y
sprainedbrain The books on the ballot are pulled specifically from suggestions on the form from last month, but you can write in other books and they will be added to the next round of voting. If you have multiple books to add, email them to me jenni.d.langford@gmail.com and I will get them added. Be sure to specify author, title, and which category the book is for. 2y
sprainedbrain Finally, I am tagging people that filled out my form last month or have since asked to be tagged, but this group is open to EVERYONE. I expect we will have people join in for some, but not all, chosen books, and participation will change constantly, but if you would like to be tagged in future #PemberLittens posts (and aren‘t already tagged), please let me know and I will add you to my list. 2y

#PemberLittens!

Thank you so much to the 62 of you who filled out the form and gave me your thoughts on how to continue the group! I‘ve compiled all of that great info and have a proposal, but since I‘m excited and far too wordy for Litsy, if you‘re tagged, I‘ve sent you an email. 😉

Can you please take a look and let me know what you think? I‘d love to get something going for us for December or January.

Thank you!

❤️

Bookwormjillk Got your email! I like the idea of 3 books every 2 months starting in January. Thank you! 2y
mollyrotondo Thank you for the email! I agree with @Bookwormjillk that 3 books every 2 months sounds like a great idea! That way the discussions and time to read can be spread out and anyone who wants to read all 3 can fit it into their schedule. Thank you for all your time that you put into this! 2y
ravenlee I‘m with them 👆🏼. It sounds like a great plan to me and thank you so much for working it all out! Pemberlittens forever! 2y
LeahBergen I agree with everyone above 👆🏻! Three books every two months with the option to jump in and out sounds perfect. Thanks so much! 😘 2y
Chrissyreadit 🙌🥳sounds like a plan 2y
quietjenn Yep, chiming in to agree! Thank you for your thought and planning - excited for this iteration of things! 2y
batsy Thank you for the detailed email and the hard work that goes into this 💕 I'm also in agreement with the rest; three books every two months is ideal and being able to jump in and out depending on interest also works perfectly imo! 2y
Cathythoughts Thanks so much for your email ! Yes , I agree & would be delighted with this plan .. three books every two months & having the choice 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️ 2y
Deblovestoread I'm on board with all the above! So happy to have this group continue reading together. Thank you for keeping us going. Love ❤ this group so much! 2y
erzascarletbookgasm 3 books from different categories every 2 months with the options of reading along sounds great. 👌 Thank you for your effort! 💛 2y
jenniferw88 Agree with above, and willing to host the buddy reads for non-fiction books about Jane, and also to help host for the other authors. 2y
SarahBookInterrupted Yes, I agree too. 3 books every 2 months is perfect. Will you still be doing your funny little summary posts? I love those so much. They don‘t have to be daily obviously with 3 books but was just wondering. 2y
SarahBookInterrupted @sprainedbrain thank you for all the work you do and have done for this group. It‘s much appreciated! 2y
StayCurious I agree with everyone here and am happy to get involved with the group! 2y
megnews I like your plan and I‘m excited to join in. Thanks for all your work on this. (edited) 2y
BarkingMadRead Agree as well! 2y
nanuska_153 I agree with everyone above, 3 books every 2 months sounds perfect cause it gives you the time to read more than one if you are interested. Thanks for all the hard work! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I like that the consensus seems to be leaning towards three books/two months, because I also like that schedule! Thank you so much for taking the time to send your informative email!!! 2y
MaureenMc @sprainedbrain Thank you for taking the time & putting so much thought into this. I truly appreciate it. 😊 I, too, like the 3 books/2 mos. proposal. 2y
Daisey I agree that this plan sounds great, and I‘m very much looking forward to reading with this group again. 2y
Librarybelle Everything sounds good to me! Thanks for taking the time to write a very informative email…lots of hard work on your part, so thank you so much for coordinating! 2y
Amandajoy I love the ideas! The 3 books / 2 months is a great schedule. They‘ll be good variety & low pressure. I also love @nanuska_153 ‘s idea that in honor of Austen we should focus on writers who have contributed to the feminist canon. (Along with some retellings, because, let‘s face it, while fun, not all retellings are great works of feminist literature.) 2y
katy4peas 3 books/2 months is a great timeline for me as I am a slow reader. 🙂 This seems like a great way to include lots of interests and you obviously put a lot of thought and detail into it. I think it will work very well. Thank you for your hard work of organizing the group and for reorganizing us. 💕 I‘m excited to read with this group again! 2y
rubyslippersreads Sounds great to me! Looking forward to more Austenish reading! Thanks for organizing us. 😀 2y
Q84 Every 2 months sounds great! 2y
DebinHawaii I echo everyone else, the 3 books in 2 months & option to drop in-and-out is great. Thank you for giving it so much thought & effort! 🤗 2y
i.besteph Thanks for the email! The stated options sound good to me, granted though that I won‘t be able to join every time. I‘m excited to join the group again! 2y
Reggie Thank goodness, because even though I don‘t participate I was missing all the haiku, meme, collage content. Lol love the passion of your group. 2y
mom2bugnbee Echoing everyone else - the plan outlined in your email sounds fantastic! Thanks for everything, Jenni - you rock at making this group so much fun! 2y
AnneCecilie I‘m with everyone else. 3 books in 2 months and participate in what you want sounds great 2y
kspenmoll Appreciate all your work- did not get email so maybe I forgot to fill your form out. But whatever you all decide I would like to join in. You may have an old gmail address I no longer have. 2y
sprainedbrain @kspenmoll I did get your form, and you were included in the email. The email address I sent to was the one on your form: kdspenmoll @ icloud dot com. Was that not correct? 2y
sprainedbrain @kspenmoll can you please confirm your correct email so that I can resend the email to you? You can send me an email at jenni.d.langford@gmail.com if you prefer that to posting it here. 2y
kspenmoll @sprainedbrain I sent it to your email as well: kdspenmoll@icloud.com 2y
MeganAnn I am in agreement with everyone else. 3 books/2 months is perfect and I love being able to jump in or out depending on the books and what works for me. I‘d love to start this in January and I‘m happy to help with buddy reads for a couple of the retellings/adaptations if needed. (edited) 2y

I think this description of Sense and Sensibility by a teenage boy is my all time favorite. 🤣
#pemberlittens @sprainedbrain #teamelinor

Crinoline_Laphroaig @MargaretPinardAuthor 'I ask Mom if I can borrow one of her copies of Northanger Abbey—she‘s got a two-book minimum of everything Jane Austen wrote—and she goes, “Sure, sweetie,” and looks happy about it. The thing is, even though I kind of know Jane Austen (you can‘t live in this house and not know Jane Austen), I never really read Jane Austen, so I take the one with all the underlines and notes, to clue me in to what it‘s about.' 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @MargaretPinardAuthor Teen age boy with Austen loving mother and he's trying to impress a girl. It's fabulous! 3y

Not one of the Narrator's of this book have pronounced Maria's name correctly. Have they never seen a BBC Production of Pride and Prejudice? 😒

KVanRead Ugh I can‘t stand it when audiobook producers don‘t vet the pronunciations. Drove me nuts in The Glass Hotel where the French name Yvette ( Eve-ette) was pronounced yuh-vette for the entire book 😬 3y

And now for the truly dreadful. This one is all about someone buying a supposed Signed 1st Edition of Pride & Prejudice. You have main character who is 'expert' in Austen saying 'Jane wouldn't have autographed'. But doesn't know that 1st Edition wasn‘t book but 3 Volumes???

I can suspend disbelief a bit but not to the point where you don't even get basic facts right. It's like the writers didn't even do a Google search. 🤦🏻‍♀️ #pemberlittens

Crinoline_Laphroaig Writers should have know better: 'F. J. MEIER is the nom de plume of husband-and-wife authors Diane Meier and Frank Delaney. She: Author of the acclaimed novel The Season of Second Chances and He: Irish-born Frank Delaney is the author of more than twenty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the New York Times bestselling novels Ireland and Tipperary.' Rant Over. 3y

Yesterday I had to get out for errands. (& yes I 😷.) Anthologies are always hard to rate overall. Some stories are brilliant: Jane Austen's Nightmare
A Night at Northanger
Jane & the Gentleman Rogue - reason I bought. 11.5 of Jane Austen Mysteries.
#janeandtheyear2020
👍for those.
#prideandprejudiceday #pemberlittens

“Silly Catherine,” said the ghost of Jane Austen indulgently. “There are no such things as ghosts.” - Night at Northanger

Crinoline_Laphroaig And my hat is called the Jane Austen hat from Victorian Trading Company. I got it end of last winter when it was on sale. https://www.victoriantradingco.com/item/25-HT-250037/100117/JANE-AUSTEN-HAT-BROW... 3y

Northanger Abbey Retellings -
Nachtsturm Castle looks good.
Jane Austen Made Me Do It and Bespelling Jane Austen both have Northanger Abbey stories. They're ongoing reads for me.
Murder at Northanger Abbey I own.
If I have time will try:
Bride of Northanger
Henry Tilney's Diary
Searching for Mr. Tilney
NA Angels & Demons 📚

#Pemberlittens @sprainedbrain

Today‘s #audiosouping pick. I actually started this one a couple of years ago as a library e-book but didn‘t get far. I though I‘d enjoy it more as an audiobook & I do. The first story is Jane Austen‘s Nightmare where Jane on a late night walk in Bath encounters her characters come to life-many unhappy with how she portrayed them. The soup is a quick one, a Greek Avgolemono variation & so a short story format is perfect. Finished soup pic to come.

Mehso-so

In this collection of short stories inspired by the works of Jane Austen, there are some hits and some misses. I enjoyed most the stories that expanded on the perspectives of some of the more minor characters. I enjoyed less the modernizations.

Most of my companion animals over the years have been named after Jane Austen characters, and these two dorks are no exception. Elliot and Tilney have to be so cute, to make up for their general bratty behavior (she says after being woken up at 5:45 this morning by a extremely vocally hungry Tilney). #TBRtemptation post 7! This is a collection of short stories inspired by Jane Austen--her novels, her life, her wits, her world. The list of contributors includes: Lauren Willig, Adriana Trigiani, Jo Beverley, Jane Odiwe, and Margaret C. Sullivan. There's all kinds of variety in these gems. And finally - my first and most prolific #fanfic #homage love... with a #Goodreads shelf of over 100 titles 😆 Regardless of quality, I will devour anything related to Jane Austen 💜 #feistyfeb #fanfichomage

CrowCAH Go for it! 😊 I don't read too many Austen spinoffs, just cause I don't want to ruin the originals. Fav is P&P! 7y
RealLifeReading Wow I didn't know there were so many! 7y
Laura317 Ok the sea monster one cracks me up! 7y

LeahBergen I was just reading a chapter about all the fan fiction she inspired in this book 7y
Yamich49 SAME!! 7y
readinginthedark Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters is so good!!! 7y
DebinHawaii My favorites too! As much as I love the original, even the bad ones are fun to read. (Although I only have about 80 shelved.) 📚👍😆 7y
ThatBookishGal What would you recommend? I've read all of Austen's actual works and I loved them. I read pride and prejudice and zombies (and the sequels) and loved those. I read Elligible and loved it. I'm just so scared of reading those continuations...I don't want it to shatter my Austen bubble! 7y
Eyelit I understand the hesitancy @ThatBookishGal - there are some clunkers out there. I'd say start off with the books with essays/short stories and go from there. I started with a p&p dedicated book and branched off after that. You can check out my austentatious shelf on goodreads to see how I've rated the ones I've read. I did like An Assembly... series as it was from Darcy's pov (although the middle book kinda dragged) 7y
Eyelit @ThatBookishGal the Bebris mystery series is a funnish romp through Jane's works/characters as it has Elizabeth Darcy solving mysteries and interacting with characters from the other books 😃 7y
ThatBookishGal @Eyelit lol those sound awesome! Thanks! 7y
Eyelit @ThatBookishGal Also the book I tagged for the post is a good one too - mix of stories/essays 7y
Krisjericho Same! 7y

#readjanuary #page24ofyourcurrentread Jane Austen Made Me Do It is a short story collection from various authors, each inspired by Jane Austen and her works. Page 24 has the last paragraph for the first story, Jane Austen's Nightmare by Syrie James, in which Jane is visited by her unhappy characters. #shortstories

#readjanuary #bookandyourfavesnack I'm a sucker for a toasted sandwich (gluten free because I'm coeliac). Although I also love potato chips, cherries and blueberries, yoghurt, cheese and tomato on crackers, peanut butter smoothies, and homemade cakes. Guess I like food as much as I like books!

Some Jane Austen adaptations plus one book of literary criticism that features essays by authors on why they read Jane Austen. I have all Jane Austen's major novels on my Nook. Love Jane 💕#seasonsreadings2016

my #JaneAusten collection, including #adaptations, nestled in the classics. That beast there is not practical to read from, btw. #SeasonsReadings

Anyone who has known me more that ten minutes pretty much knows I love me some Jane Austen. I will consume just about anything Jane Austen related. I have a whole 'austenesque' shelf on Goodreads because I have read and will continue to read what is probably considered fanfiction. These are a few of my #favejaneaustenadaptations for today's #seasonsreadings2016

Betty I had NO idea so many authors copied Jane Austen 7y
Eyelit @Betty it's practically a whole industry 😆 7y
Libby1 Did you like Longbourn? Too many chilblains for me. 😬 7y
Eyelit @Libby1 I did like longbourn, though it did take me a while to really get into it. 7y
