Hard Choices
Hard Choices | Hillary Rodham Clinton
Hillary Rodham Clintons inside account of the crises, choices, and challenges she faced during her four years as Americas 67th Secretary of State, and how those experiences drive her view of the future. All of us face hard choices in our lives, Hillary Rodham Clinton writes at the start of this personal chronicle of years at the center of world events. Life is about making such choices. Our choices and how we handle them shape the people we become. In the aftermath of her 2008 presidential run, she expected to return to representing New York in the United States Senate. To her surprise, her former rival for the Democratic Party nomination, newly elected President Barack Obama, asked her to serve in his administration as Secretary of State. This memoir is the story of the four extraordinary and historic years that followed, and the hard choices that she and her colleagues confronted. Secretary Clinton and President Obama had to decide how to repair fractured alliances, wind down two wars, and address a global financial crisis. They faced a rising competitor in China, growing threats from Iran and North Korea, and revolutions across the Middle East. Along the way, they grappled with some of the toughest dilemmas of US foreign policy, especially the decision to send Americans into harms way, from Afghanistan to Libya to the hunt for Osama bin Laden. By the end of her tenure, Secretary Clinton had visited 112 countries, traveled nearly one million miles, and gained a truly global perspective on many of the major trends reshaping the landscape of the twenty-first century, from economic inequality to climate change to revolutions in energy, communications, and health. Drawing on conversations with numerous leaders and experts, Secretary Clinton offers her views on what it will take for the United States to compete and thrive in an interdependent world. She makes a passionate case for human rights and the full participation in society of women, youth, and LGBT people. An astute eyewitness to decades of social change, she distinguishes the trendlines from the headlines and describes the progress occurring throughout the world, day after day. Secretary Clintons descriptions of diplomatic conversations at the highest levels offer readers a master class in international relations, as does her analysis of how we can best use smart power to deliver security and prosperity in a rapidly changing worldone in which America remains the indispensable nation.

Review of Jodi Picoult‘s audiobook CHOICE (not title tagged since Litsy doesn‘t have): PICK.

What if cis-gender identifying males were the only humans (suddenly!) to have a uterus? (I think that is the accurate question considered here.)

Reminds me of once asking my husband what he would think if he saw only women in (favorite) movies and on television (ie ESPN) - he told me not to be ridiculous. His brain couldn‘t even comprehend.

I did like this book, but I didn‘t looooove it. It‘s not well written, and some of her stories are a little cheesy. Not exactly riveting. BUT... I have a new and strong appreciation for what a good Secretary of State can accomplish for the US. I surprised myself as I read with how ignorant I was about the job. The chapter on human rights is A++.

So yeah, I haven't read What Happened yet or I would probably be rec'ing it here, but I read this prior to the happening (or during, I guess). My feelings about Hillary are super complicated. I admire so much of what she has accomplished but don't really support much of her stance as a politician. I def think she has been treated unfairly; she is wholly a status quo politico and judged far more harshly than her ilk. But we don't need status quo.

LadyRuthven I think you sumed up exactly how I feel about her. And I agree with you whole heartily. ☺👍 7y

Finished listening to this audiobook on the way to and from the women‘s march because it seemed fitting. While it‘s well written and I learned a lot, I think I understand how she lost the election. There are successes from here that she touted in her campaign that I don‘t think the average American cares about, and some I never heard of until listening to this book that she should have been talking up.

Hey, Littens! I am about to meet up with a work book club I have started in association with my company's women's network. I thought I would ping you all to get some suggestions for our next choice. What would be a good recently published book for a group of professional woman to read and discuss? Fiction or non-fiction.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Not recent recent 2015....but how about It's What a Do. A professional women, has work and personal struggles and life. (edited) 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Lab Girl was last year....Science and professional working woman, also covers depression and other personal issues. 7y
HardcoverHearts @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - ooooh! I loved Lab Girl! It's what I do sounds amazing! Great ideas- thank you!! Keep em coming, if you have more! 7y
See All 12 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Maybe All the Single Ladies, depending on your group....about more women choosing to remain single these days and how that dynamic is changing other things. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @HardcoverHearts I will. I was thinking great professional women books, but that also have personal appeal. Hard Choices, which you tagged, was of course excellent too. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @HardcoverHearts It's What I Do is similar in some ways to Lab Girl, she a professional photographer, and travels to war and conflict zones, while trying to manage family and relationships. Great stories, pictures, etc. I enjoyed it. She's also a McArthur Genius Award Winner 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And as much as people probably wouldn't put this one in the same category as those, I enjoyed Lakshmi's memoir. I didn't know her as a celebrity before reading the book...but I liked her talk of work, Indian culture, dealing with serious health issues that were downplayed by family and doctors for ages, Etc 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I also enjoyed Notorious RBG, it was informative and personal, and fun too, especially some of the meme's etc that have sprung up around the "notorious" Supreme Court justice. 7y
HardcoverHearts @Riveted_Reader_Melissa : It's so funny- we previously read Notorious RBG and Men Explain Things To Me and they were huge hits! This time they chose Wild and Pre-suasion for the next two books. Thanks for your great suggestions! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @HardcoverHearts Love Persuasion! Those are 2 great books. 7y

Starting out my week in Wash DC with crab cakes from Legal Seafood before we even leave the airport. They are SO good! Listening to Hillary's Hard Choices #stillwithher. Need some recs from littens for fiction set in DC. If you aren't yet following historical fiction author @theladygreer , she is doing a cool thing for #womenshistorymonth by posting daily #womenshistoryreads

Susanita I'm only familiar with mysteries/thrillers, if you're looking for those. Some authors are Pelecanos, Meltzer, and Neely Tucker. For things to do, I recommend the American Indian museum, which has a great cafeteria as well. 8y
lynneamch @MicheleinPhilly I've wanted to read that, but didn't realize the DC setting. Thanks bunches. 8y
lynneamch @Susanita Oooh. Some good tips. Thanks. (As you can tell by the pic, I will appreciate a good cafeteria. 😉) 8y

I am a highly motivated individual....but for the past three years I have put of sitting for the LSAT and applying to law school. Mainly it was the cost...but honestly I think it was the fear. But after November I feel more fired up then ever to become an attorney. You know what's wild; is I have always wanted to be a Civil Rights attorney. With a focus on the 8th amendment and the death penalty. Time to get to work! #goals

I should probably have been reading today, trying to finish up books I've started or finish out 2016 challenges, but nope I'm calling it. I did manage to finish 2 smaller challenges and top my original Goodreads goal of 100 books, up my goal & top it again. #BlameItOnLitsy. However, I fell short on Read Harder (by 2) & PopSugar (by 4), but I can't really regret it. I'm happy for the new things I read and the wonderful way my reading led me astray.

Normalerweise bin ich nicht für Politikerbiographien und 'schwere Kost', aber nach den letzten Wahlen ist das Interesse doch geweckt. Malala hab ich direkt mitbestellt, um mich auch hier einzulesen.

Normally I do not read politician biographies or other 'heavy reads', but after the last election I am interested in this subject. I also ordered Malala, because I want to read it as soon as I can.

Buechersuechtling Okay.

Love or hate her, this is an excellent book that will give you background into politics & conflicts around the world, as well as some insight into how our gov't & foreign gov'ts operate in the most combustible of situations. It has smuggling dissidents into embassies, making deals to preserve stability & peace, lots of careful tact & tough negotiations, conflict areas worldwide, & barging in on 'secret' meetings! Now I need to read all SOS's books

NovelGirl82 I've been trying to decide if I wanted to read this, but I think I will after this. I trust your opinion! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @NovelGirl82 I listened to it on audiobook if that helps. And although it is long on audio, it's broken up into sections of the world, and later into topics like Climate Change.... so you could easily listen to one part, say Latin America and then take a break, read something else and then pick up with the East Asia section another time. 8y
NovelGirl82 Oh, that's really helpful! I think my library has it on overdrive. I'm glad it was good on audio. I think that would be easier for me. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @NovelGirl82 I lot of times I find more success with the big political books on audiobook. And yes, I checked mine out from the library too, listened to a few sections, then checked it out a different time and listened to the next part. 8y
NovelGirl82 Great idea! 8y

I wanted to share an article that eloquently explains the heartbreak I feel after the election: http://johnpavlovitz.com/2016/11/09/heres-why-we-grieve-today/?utm_campaign=cosc... -- maybe it will resonate with you, or help you understand why some of us are still weeping. #WeHoldTheLine #MidtermElections2018

geodynamical_nonfiction I'm guessing this quote is taken out of context, because, taken literally, this kind of talk starts wars. If everyone fought for what they thought was right, we'll all be fighting all the time because no one can agree on what is right. Dividing into us vs them and right vs wrong doesn't serve to connect anyone. This is the same mantra that terrorists use. It's tragic and isolating speech. Surely we can come together based on our needs and not this 8y

A long, sad night. I shed many, many tears and will probably continue to do so today. There's no shame in that. I know you're feeling the same. We're shocked, disappointed, scared ... but we are not done. There are too many of us that still believe in equality and helping each other. We WILL get louder!

I am proud to be with this hardworking, intelligent, tenacious woman who dedicated her life to public service. It is a heartbreaking day when those traits cannot prevail in the face of an ignorant, misogynistic, racist, self-serving bully. I am terrified for what a Trump White House with a Republican Congress will mean for America, for the world, and yes, for me as a gay Hispanic woman in a same-sex marriage. May we fare better than Germany 1933.

I posted a selfie on Facebook and used the hashtag #imwithher. Now I've got some hard choices of my own to make, like whether I should block, unfriend, or just unfollow the angry relatives sending me hate in my dm's. What would Hillary do? 🤔

BookishMarginalia She'd probably just leave it (to keep an eye on the enemy camp). I'd unfriend or block, depending on the level of vitriol. 8y
LeahLovesLit It's kind of funny right now. People seem REALLY invested in influencing how I vote, even though, as the sticker indicates, that's a done deal 8y
jessberk13 I am in the same boat. I quietly delete the comments and don't acknowledge it. My family knows I've always had differing political views. 8y
LeahLovesLit After several messages full of propaganda, hate, and lies, plus a refusal to stop sending me stuff when I said I was done, someone just said they were only doing it because they love me. Awww. Disrespecting my opinions, refusing to listen to my ideas, and ignoring basic manners totally makes me feel loved. 😍 8y

Sneaky ebook reading at my family's tonight! I couldn't celebrate my bday w/my family last weekend so we did tonight & celebrated like we do in the south: beef brisket, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, & pot pie.🍷🎂

I brought an appropriate ebook that I've been slowly working through bc my dad & I don't see eye to eye on politics & I'm a rebel. Required reading to make it through dinner. Not pictured: my official HRC shirt to stoke the fire. 😬😂

read_diverse_books Gosh, that dinner looks absolutely delectable. 😋 8y
BookishFeminist @read_diverse_books It was so tasty!! The brisket made the political tension worth it. 😂 8y
Sparkpuppypup I sooooo feel ya with the not seeing eye to eye with your family and politics thing. I usually have to drink a lot to get through family functions with my in-laws. 😜🍷#nastywoman 8y
See All 29 Comments
BookishFeminist @Sparkpuppypup Thankfully my in-laws aren't a problem! My dad is & my brother loves to point it out whenever possible and I'm never nice about it, lol. I don't owe anyone anything who is going to vote against mine and others' human rights, so I don't even care at this point. Therapy reading & wine still required though! I had plenty of both tonight. 😂🍷 8y
Chessa That looks amazing! And sending strength for the political disagreements. So infuriating. 8y
obviateit Ugh. I'm in the same boat with my dad. Solidarity. ❤️🍷😁 8y
BookishFeminist @Chessa It was so yummy! Right? Thank god I usually get the upper hand now since I stay on top of reading about politics and guess who doesn't? LOL. I hope you don't have tense dinners! 8y
BookishFeminist @obviateit ALL of the wine. 🍷🍷🍷🍷 Always the dudes. 🙄 Solidarity right back atcha. 👊🏼 8y
Chessa Thankfully, not often - my parents and I see eye to eye these days. My husband mentioned that his dad and stepmom were very likely voting for Trump (we don't know for certain, but if history is any indicator...) and I literally stuck my fingers in my ears and sang lalalala I can't know this! We don't see them often, but it still makes me crazy to even think about. 8y
BookishFeminist @Chessa oh that's good! But YIKES with your in-laws! I know the feeling. History indicates my dad will vote for him (even though he's a businessman and should definitely know better), but I haven't outright asked this election cycle because I just don't want to know if you support him and I have to deal with you. No question I would have it out with my dad for voting for a sexual predator- more than just "conservatism" this election. ? 8y
stacybmartin That looks delicious! Plus, totally get the family and politics thing. I routinely ask my parents if they're sure they didn't find me in a cabbage patch - I couldn't be more different from my entire family with my political leanings. 🙄 8y
BekahB HA! My parents and I have different political views too. When my grandpa (my mom's dad) was around, he liked to casually say something that he knew my mom and I disagreed on and then sit back and watch. He once bought me HRC's book Living History and intentionally waited until my mom was in the room to give it to me to see what she would say. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @BekahB My brother does that too! 😂 At this point it's nice to have the upper hand bc even my dad's favorite radio host Glenn Beck has endorsed HRC. This year I've been goading my dad more than my family has, wearing my campaign shirt, dropping into convos that I've been volunteering, etc. It's been fun to watch him bite his tongue. It sounds like your family tends to be good natured about it & I'm glad! Mine isn't usually. 😳 this year they are. 8y
BookishFeminist @stacybmartin So yummy! What is it with parents and this?! I swear I won't turn out with different leanings when I'm older. I don't understand! 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @readinginthedark It was very yummy! I've needed some southern comfort food for a while. 😀 8y
LeahBergen That brisket looks like it would make anything bearable! 😮 8y
erinreads My dad is a Republican but actually admitted that he didn't vote for any candidate for president this year! He still went and voted for everything else, but he just couldn't vote for Trump. 🙌🏻 Maryland will go blue either way, and he knows that, but I'm just so proud that I'm not directly related to a Trump voter, hahaha. 8y
stacybmartin @BookishFeminist me either! Although my mom said she was just not going to vote for president at all, so at least there's that! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Oh, man, I hear you on the Dad/politics issue. I keep my mouth shut, and yet, Republican family members have no qualms about being loudmouths. Perhaps thats another fundamental difference between us politically. 🙄 8y
WordWaller @BookishFeminist @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com oooff, same story over here, what with my parents both being opposite of me and my dad VERY vocal about it whenever I intentionally bring it up! At least my in-laws don't try to side step the issue either 😒 (at least both my moms are peacemakers!!) but yeah I can't even hang out with family until after the election 8y
TheWellReadOwl I used to work hard to keep the peace about the political differences in my family, and my in-laws. You know, trying not to ruffle feathers, ruin dinners, etc. Everyone knew where I stood but no one touched the subject. But this election cycle, I've refused to keep my moth shut and it had made for some interesting family discussions, and more than a few "unfriendings" on Facebook and other social media. Sorry not sorry ? 8y
BookishFeminist @TheWellReadOwl I'm right there with you. It's not a normal election, so I won't keep my mouth shut bc I don't want a damn fascist in office. I don't care how "good of a tax break" you'll get when this president will have the potential to impact the Supreme Court & mine and others' rights & not discourage rape culture and racism. #SorryNotSorry. I yelled at someone at a wedding recently for supporting Gary "doesn't know foreign policy" Johnson. 8y
BookishFeminist @TheWellReadOwl I've lost friends too and don't even care because if you're going to vote for your money and guns over my safety and rights, you aren't my friend anyway. This isn't politics. This is dangerous anti-government rhetoric. 8y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen The brisket definitely made it bearable! As did the wine I had. 😬😬 8y
BookishFeminist @stacybmartin Hey, progress! I don't give people flack for not voting bc it's their choice in how to exercise their right. I just don't want to associate with people supporting a fascist. 8y
BookishFeminist @erinreads That's good news! I won't ask my dad because I don't want the answer. But before this mess I used to compare my dad's business patterns to DT so yea, it's not looking good for him either not voting or voting for a different candidate. And we're in a swing state too! Hoping it will go blue regardless bc we have Tim Kaine & he's very popular here. (I'm in Virginia.) Just wish my brother wouldn't goad him! 8y
BookishFeminist @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com @WordWaller Solidarity. ✊🏼 My dad is the loud mouth about it and my brother likes to goad him into talking about it. But he raised me so I am ALSO a loud mouth, & one with a law degree & who follows politics more than he does. 😈 I get the upper hand in the discussions these days but I don't even want it brought up! Makes me lose respect & it makes the whole family pissy the rest of the night. 8y
TheWellReadOwl @BookishFeminist Everything you said. Everything. 8y
