Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Caf
Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Caf | Toshikazu Kawaguchi
In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a caf which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time... From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold comes a story of four new customers each of whom is hoping to take advantage of Cafe Funiculi Funicula's time-travelling offer. Among some faces that will be familiar to readers of Kawaguchi's previous novel, we will be introduced to: The man who goes back to see his best friend who died 22 years ago The son who was unable to attend his own mothers funeral The man who went back to see the girl who he could not marry The old detective who never gave his wife that gift... This beautiful, simple tale tells the story of people who must face up to their past, in order to move on with their lives. Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?

If you like The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, you should consider reading Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. Both novels explore the complications of time travel and dig deep into the weight of personal experiences. A common theme in Before the Coffee Gets Cold is the idea of acceptance. The four characters followed are faced with the dilemma of their individual choices, leading them to evaluate what truly matters to them.

piper.macleod The chance to go back in time encourages the participants to reflect on their motives and express their feelings. They learn to relinquish their burdens and find peace within their past. 2w
piper.macleod In the third chapter, readers are introduced to a woman named Hirai, the owner of a nearby bar. She was expected to run her family's inn but had left to pursue her own dreams. Hirai‘s departure left her relationship with her family broken, and her younger sister Kumi obliged to manage the business. Kumi often went to visit her sister in an attempt to get her to come back home, and one day as she was doing so, she got in a car accident. (edited) 2w
piper.macleod Her untimely death led Hirai to deeply mourn her passing and reflect on the ignorance she had shown her sibling. Hirai travels to the past so she can resolve lingering problems and talk to Kumi one last time. (edited) 2w
piper.macleod Lastly, readers follow a partial owner of the cafe, Kei. Since she was young she was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. This limits her from participating in vigorous activities and more importantly makes it very difficult to bear a child. She is warned that she and her baby may not survive if she chooses to have it. Despite this Kei decides to have a baby. 2w
piper.macleod Her main worry is that her baby will not be happy in the future, so she attempts to travel forward in time. Going to the future was not a popular wish, as you would never know if the person you are visiting would be there. Thankfully, because Kei knew the other workers at the cafe, she set up a system so she could meet her daughter.

If you are looking for a book that explores time travel and the complexities of human experiences, Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is perfect for you. This novel is written from a third-person limited point of view. Although each chapter features different stories, the author only provides access to the feelings and thoughts of one character at a time.

The scene opens in an ancient café located in Tokyo. According to an urban legend, in this café, you can travel to the past. In the first chapter, the reader meets Fumiko, a workaholic who longs to mend her ended relationship. She is warned about a set of strict rules, the most important being that she must return before her coffee gets cold. Fumiko grapples with the emotional weight of her life choices.

The second chapter focuses on a man with Alzheimer\'s disease named Fusagi and his wife, Kohtake. Fusagi\'s condition begins to worsen, to the point where he forgets who his wife is. Kohtake becomes his caretaker, hoping that he will someday recognize her. She attempts to travel back to a time before her husband was diagnosed. Their story emphasizes the complexities of relationships and the importance of cherishing connections.

I am not sure what happened here. It sounded like a book that would be right up my alley - there is even a cat on the cover! But I was ...bored? I switched to audio for entertainment while I painted my office but I just didn't care and ended up watching Criminal Minds instead.
The concept is good, but either the execution or translation was not.

Woke up.this morning really needing a change so I decided to paint my office/library green.

Listening to the tagged #Bookspin on audio while I work!

LiteraryinPA That‘s so cool! I usually waffle over those decisions forever and never make the change, so I appreciate your decisiveness! 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @LiteraryinPA I always think about it as it\'s just paint! it will take me most of the day to do, with plenty of breaks, if I decide I hate it, I can always re-paint later! Painting is not permanent! 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I thought I‘d love this low-stakes time traveling café book more than I did. I think it came down to how it‘s a short story collection and I‘m never a good reader of those. That said, I did like how all the stories were connected and how the time travel was so low-stakes. You weren‘t worried the world would be changed, just the people there.I don‘t think I‘ll read more, but there are some characters I am wondering about, so you never know!

I felt for characters, this book made me feel.

The setting was cozy but this was also a sad book. The life always won so even though there were tough topics this still felt really hopeful.

I loved the message of the book: how a change of heart can make all the difference.

Another book club pick, the topic was Exotic Escapades. I guess time travel is the exotic part. No one goes anywhere and the entire book is set in the same cafe. The rest of my review is in the comments, buckle up I have thoughts on this very meh book.
There‘s no explanation of how the chair/ cafe came to be. Also, who is the ghost woman?! We are teased about her but then given NOTHING. And after the fourth story, it just ends. (More in comments)

Allthebookclubs There was no real connection between the characters outside of them all going to the cafe. Maybe it‘s because it‘s translated, but there was no flow to the writing and the characters felt like puppets. 3mo
Allthebookclubs The first story where we have a girl crying over a guy feels outdated and forced. Beautiful girl with a geeky guy…where haven‘t we seen this before? 3mo
Allthebookclubs The second story was more heartwarming and I wish there was more of this sentiment in the other stories. They were the least puppet-like characters. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
Allthebookclubs The third story was again forced and somewhat cliche about expectations of the oldest child. And remind me why there‘s a bit about the gyno?! So weird. 3mo
Allthebookclubs I liked the fourth story and I guess maybe it ties in the previous gyno visit, but again there‘s just no flow in the writing.
Wasted potential. Book #77 in 2024

4 charming interlinked short stories set in a cafe in Tokyo where you can go back in time. There are certain constraints, however:

1.Nothing you do will change events between then and now. Whatever has happened, will happen.

2. You cannot leave your seat in the cafe, so you can only meet people who have already been to the cafe.

3. You will return to the present when you have finished your coffee - and you MUST finish it before it gets cold.

Mixed feelings about this book. I agree with other reviews that this would be better as a play or a Netflix series. As a book . . . well, I'll just say I think maybe something has been lost a bit in translation. I think that if I could read it in Japanese, instead of this translation, it would be better. The English translation, well, I thought it felt simplistic and overexplained. But I like the concept.

LeahBergen I felt the same! 5mo

I liked the premise of this one, but it did get a bit samey with the descriptions of the coffee and going back in time. I think that was partially because it is very similar in style to What you are looking for is in the library! But I did enjoy it! I don‘t think I will rush to get the next one, but I will probably read it in the future :)

What a cool idea. Books about time travel are usually fantasy / wish-fulfillment. But what if it cane with so many rules that it hardly made sense to even try it? While the idea carried the beginning of the book, and the slow reveal of the connections between the characters carried the middle, it had lost all steam by the end.

Imagine a coffee shop that lets you go back in time with a few (read many) rules to follow.

As interesting as the premise was, the book was pretty bland. I understand some essence being lost because of this being a translation. Expected a bit too much I guess, DNFing after the second story.

I liked the story but not the writing, which is understandable as it‘s a translation. However it felt clunky to read and a tad repetitive. The way the female character‘s perspectives were written also felt a little off base.
Nevertheless, it was a short read with an interesting plot line.

I was intrigued by the concept & the specific relationships each section explored.

But the writing style just felt so flat. I saw other reviewers suggest it might have been due to translation, but I don‘t think that was my issue. It was more about where the author offered detail (like describing everybody‘s outfits?!) vs where he kept it sparse or oversimplified (the action, character development)? I was left annoyed; so much missed potential.

1, I think WWI or WWII are my favorites, although the WWII time period has so many books set in that time it gets a little saturated.
2. A Court of Thorns and Roses.
3. Gone With The Wind or The Mists of Avalon are the longest books I've read.

Merry Christmas! 🎄I‘m up early and waiting for the rest of the household to wake up and open their presents so I‘ve used the time wisely and finished my book! This is between a ‘pick‘ and a ‘so-so‘. I‘m feeling generous as it‘s Christmas! This is an interesting concept and story, just the execution wasn‘t great. The writing didn‘t really flow. But maybe this is just the translation. Anyway, Merry Christmas and happy reading!

I wasn‘t expecting this book to touch so deeply on emotions and humanity. The four stories were heartfelt and thoughtful. Though each was short, the stories were big and didn‘t leave me feeling a hole in the story. The flow of the writing took me a bit to get into maybe due to its translation or that it was written as a play, but I did like the style. I enjoyed getting to know these characters and I‘m looking forward to my bookclub discussion!

I have been depressed & painfully sad since I lost my better half recently. And the rare moment I feel the least bit happy about something I immediately feel guilty. So this hit home, “If I had led a sad life as a result of my sister's death, then it would have been as if her death has caused it. So, I thought I mustn't allow that to happen.I swore to myself that I would make sure that I was happy. My joy would be the legacy of my sister's life.“💙

This book was great! The 3rd and 4th stories in particular made me bawl like a baby. Can't recommend this enough. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Seems like this one's got lots of mixed reviews, but I quite enjoyed the original so am hoping for the same this go round.

I am very turned off by how kawaguchi describes his female characters.

TBD on bailing because of that.

I think this little book lost out with the translation. Also it was originally a stage play and I could see that working well. The appeal of this book might be the lessons/ moral or what ever each story portrayed. I‘m afraid I couldn‘t finish it as there was something about the writing that didn‘t get me in in. I‘m guessing it was the way it was translated. I did love the life lessons of the first two that I read.

LeeRHarry I thought this was pretty so-so and not very memorable. 12mo
Anna40 It might be just be the way it‘s written in the original that doesn‘t work in another language but please don‘t say it‘s the translation. I started doing a bit of literary translation myself and I can assure you that all the established lit translators I‘ve met so far are passionate about their job, underpaid and committed to making books from all over the world accessible to English speaking readers staying as true to the original as possible 12mo

Yeah, nah.

This was a speed-read before book club tomorrow, where I suspect I‘ll be in the minority.

Not my cup of tea (🤭)

LapReader Me either. Struggling to get through it. Definitely not reading the next one. 13mo

Weekly Report

Almost done with Clarissa! So, of course, I've started another 18th century epistolary novel 😂 This one is overwrought. Also reading the quite meta Age of Goodbyes. And because my hold from several months ago came through, I read Before the Coffee Gets Cold.

The second in this series, and four more people visit the cafe to go back to the past. It was moving and sad. It's a simple idea, but it works.

Poignant stories of how people have regrets and would go to great lengths to go back in time for one chance to make amends. So, in this unique cafe in Tokyo, you can go back once in the past but have to come back before the coffee gets cold ; but nothing that you do can change the present.

4/5 This book was engaging & emotional. You walk through the tales of people who would give anything for one last conversation, and are left to think of your own life and the moments that slip by. Although this book was well written and compelling, it was also a bit predictable. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a quick, cozy read.

What a charming, thought provoking yet simple story. Four separate stories that are loosely tied together all centering around a small cafe that can let customers travel in time within a set of strict rules. At first I was found the narration style irksome but quickly grew to enjoy it. A great reminder to live your life in the present and to its fullest. Would recommend for a nice light read.
