Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Original)
Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Original) | Toshikazu Kawaguchi
If you could go back, who would you want to meet? In a small back alley of Tokyo, there is a caf that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee--the chance to travel back in time. Over the course of one summer, four customers visit the caf in the hopes of making that journey. But time travel isn't so simple, and there are rules that must be followed. Most important, the trip can last only as long as it takes for the coffee to get cold. Heartwarming, wistful, mysterious and delightfully quirky, Toshikazu Kawaguchi's internationally bestselling novel explores the age-old question: What would you change if you could travel back in time?

Four people who frequent the same coffee shop travel back in time to reconcile or reconnect with a loved one. Although nothing the time travelers say or do changes the future, each of them experiences a change of heart. Bittersweet and gently moving.🔸#decemberreads2021

I enjoyed this short audiobook.

If there was a cafe near you that allowed you to travel back in time, would you do it?

What about traveling into the future? Just for a glimpse??

But don't forget...you have to return to the present before your coffee gets cold.

I admit, after reading this, I think about it every morning while sipping my coffee.

Ruthiella Honestly, I don‘t want to travel in either direction. I‘ve seen/read enough sci-fi to know time travel brings unwanted complications. 😆 Love the mug, BTW! 5d

2/5 🌟

Tried book 1 & book 2 - not my cup of tea! It was too repetitive & had too many characters. Each character had a gut wrenching reason to travel back in time, the first couple of chapters were interesting and sad but then it just got too repetitive & I gave up.

This is definitely a “not in my wheelhouse” type of book but I think it was a pretty perfect way to kick off 2022. I‘ve spent a lot of time over these past 2 years obsessing over “what ifs?” and fretting about the future. This helped me put things into a healthier perspective.

From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold comes Tales from the Cafe, a story of four new customers each of whom is hoping to take advantage of Cafe Funiculi Funicula's time-travelling offer.

The man who goes back to see his best friend who died 22 years ago…
The son who was unable to attend his own mother‘s funeral…
The man who travelled to see the girl who he could not marry…
The old detective who never gave his wife that gift…

I wanted to love this more than I did. There is a nice little gem hidden inside, but I think the story would work better in its original form (it was originally a stage play, I'd love to read the script but I don't think it's been published. At least not in English). As a book, I think it would have been more effective to cut the excess and focus a short novella on Kei, Nagare, and Kazu's story.

Nice, easy read about a time travel enabled coffee chair. I gave it a so-so but I intend to read the next book in the series. No characters to fall deep into care with, but I did like that it was a short and got to the point quickly.

A chair in Tokyo in a back alley cafe leads the person who sits there to the past, but with very very specific rules. This novel weaves four stories together of moments in the past to be returned to. Long chapters, but beautifully character centered and time travel in a way that isn‘t sci-fi heavy. A charming meandering read.

This was read for my book club. This was a hard read for diff reasons. The translation at times was weird. At times it was boring and after losing my Dad almost a yr ago it made me think, "would I do this?" I didn't like all of the rules that went along with the coffee shop & sitting in that chair, such as history/future doesn't change. The characters had experiences that changed their heart, & isn't that changing history?

IuliaC It gives a lot to think about... the sequel as well 2mo

It's an interesting premise: you can briefly travel in time, as long as you return before the coffee just served grows cold. This quick read has 4 vignettes of people who take that journey. The writing is awkward and, in places, repetitive, which may be a result of the translation. I do think I'll pick up the sequel and see how that goes. ☕😊 #fiction #timetravel #fantasy

⭐⭐⭐⭐½ - Wow. At first, I wasn't sure what I was reading. I had some doubts. But by the middle of the second chapter I was #hooked! I was so moved by everything from that point forward. The tenderness, love, sorrow, and joy expressed in these pages is enchanting.

Kawaguchi's tale explores relationships, regret, and the power of love and the human heart. His writing is as magical as the seat in which his characters travel through time. ❤

This sequel to last year‘s Litsy hit has four new stories of visitors sampling the special brew at the time-traveling Cafe Funiculi Funicul in Tokyo. I love that the author spent more time on the lives of the cafe‘s owners than in the last book while still writing interesting time-travel stories. You can time travel but there are rules. In a bittersweet twist, we see that you cannot change the things that happen but you can change how you deal with them.

A short, adapted, Japanese audiobook, it makes for a quick check off a book challenge. It's character driven so it's not for everyone but I really enjoyed the takeaway.

My only negative note is that I really wanted a story on the ghost woman but didn't get one.

A simple but fun little novel about a strange basement cafe in Japan where time-travel is possible. But there are rules. If you could go back in time and revisit a moment, even if it wouldn‘t change anything in the present, what would you do? Would there be a reason to go back? Four people find reasons to travel in time in this story. A quaint, feel-good novel which I wouldn‘t be surprised to see as a Netflix series sometime soon.

This take on time travel was unique and enjoyable. In a small, three-table cafe, you have the chance to go back in time. You cannot leave the chair, you can only meet someone who has been to the cafe, nothing will change the present, and you must return to the present before the coffee gets cold. Here we get the stories of four people and come to know the reason they are in this cafe, hoping to connect with someone from the past. ⬇️
