Van Gogh's Ear
Van Gogh's Ear: The True Story | Bernadette Murphy
108305 posts | 632 read | 24 reading | 438 to read
BOOK OF THE WEEK ON BBC RADIO 4 PRIMETIME BBC2 DOCUMENTARY WITH JEREMY PAXMAN On a dark night in Provence in December 1888 Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear. It is an act that has come to define him. Yet for more than a century biographers and historians seeking definitive facts about what happened that night have been left with more questions than answers. In Van Goghs Ear Bernadette Murphy sets out to discover exactly what happened that night in Arles. Why would an artist at the height of his powers commit such a brutal act? Who was the mysterious Rachel to whom he presented his macabre gift? Was it just his lobe, or did Van Gogh really cut off his entire ear? Her investigation takes us from major museums to the dusty contents of forgotten archives, vividly reconstructing the world in which Van Gogh moved the madams and prostitutes, caf patrons and police inspectors, his beloved brother Theo and his fellow artist and house-guest Paul Gauguin. With exclusive revelations and new research about the ear and about Rachel, Bernadette Murphy proposes a bold new hypothesis about what was occurring in Van Goghs heart and mind as he made a mysterious delivery to her doorstep that fateful night. Van Goghs Ear is a compelling detective story and a journey of discovery. It is also a portrait of a painter creating his most iconic and revolutionary work, pushing himself ever closer to greatness even as he edged towards madness and one fateful sweep of the blade that would resonate through the ages.

I am also now caught up to today right now, so at least that's one thing checked off of my to-do list

It‘s not a book stack picture, but it‘s my list for #14Books14Weeks ! Maybe this is the year I finally continue with both of these series…they‘ve been listed so many times for so many challenges, one of these days I‘ll get to them! 😂

My reading has been so spotty lately, and my attention span is rather limited, I‘m hoping Gamache and Brunetti are just what I need.

I'm curious, Littens!
1) Most recent book(s) purchased
2) Last completed book from a library
Since I'm posting this, full transparency
1) A HPB book haul: Steinbeck's “Travels with Charley,“ Kosinski's “Being There,“ “DF Wallace Reader,“ “Virginia Woolf Box Set“ Harlan Ellison “Greatest Hits“
2) I Dnf a book (King's Killing Time), prior to that was the excellent “Before Watchmen: Nite Owl & Dr Manhattan “

monalyisha Hmm. Last NEW book purchased was Deep Cuts. Last library book completed was The Marmalade Diaries. Technically, my last book purchase was a haul, as well, though, from The Book Barn in Niantic, CT (which is one of my favorite places). Paperbacks are typically around $4. I bought a whole towering stack. 2d
CarolynM Linden Rise by Richmal Crompton from a second hand bookshop in Albury at a stop on the road trip home from Sydney. Books are what I spend my money on, I rarely use libraries. The last book I borrowed from a library was Stepford Wives for a Litsy readalong a few years ago because I literally could not find a copy to buy. (edited) 2d
TheKidUpstairs 1. I've been buying too many lately! Last purchase was yesterday: The Feast by Margaret Kennedy. 2. Last completed from the library was an audiobook: The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore 2d
See All 13 Comments
Deblovestoread 1) The Life of Herod The Great by Zora Neale Hurston. A #blameitonLitsy (specifically @TheBookHippie ) purchase. Most recent through Libby was 2d
shortsarahrose Just bought “Hyperbole and a Half” and “Solutions and Other Problems” by Allie Brosh yesterday. From the library, most recently finished “Tress of the Emerald Seas” by Brandon Sanderson 2d
Ruthiella I just bought “A Forgotten Home Child” for #OhCanada and last completed library book was for #EBBR 2d
BiblioLitten 1. Purchased Tom Lake by Ann Patchett and 2. Last Completed from the library was Still Life by Louise Penny. Both are #blameitonlitsy reads. 2d
Reggie 1. Eat the Ones You Love by Sara Maria Griffin and Overgrowth by Mira Grant. 2. I‘m in the middle of Say You‘ll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez. I‘ll be done with it tomorrow. 2d
dabbe 1. Last book purchased for me: The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life by Suleika Jaouad. Have I looked at it yet? Nope. But it's a pretty cover!
2. Last completed book by a library: THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT by Agatha Christie. I just finished it last night! 🤩
Thanks for the fun questions! 😍
2d
IriDas 1) The book that held her heart by Makr Lawrence. 2) The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim (edited) 2d
BarbaraJean 1. Last book purchase was a book haul: four books from the NYRB children‘s book sale (Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry, The Little Bookroom, A Traveller in Time, and An Episode of Sparrows), which, like @Deblovestoread I can blame on @TheBookHippie 😆
2. Most recent library book is tagged—I read the audiobook through Libby
2d
Suet624 1. Life Became Very Blurry by Garrett Graff, Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy, Vermont by Charles T Morrissey (from 1981)
2. Demon Copperhead

You purchased some great books!

“I‘m a writer, and everything I write is both a confession and a struggle to understand things about myself and this world in which I live. This is what everyone‘s work should be-whether you dance or paint or sing. It is a confession, a baring of your soul, your faults, those things you simply cannot or will not understand or accept. Tonight we made Bangladeshi Village-style chicken curry. It doesn‘t look like the picture in the recipe… but this might be because I had to swap Kashmiri chilli for a substitute so it isn‘t as red as it should be.

It still tasted delicious. And it was pretty easy, just lots of prep with all the spices (though they are standard ones for the most part).

Hey Littens. Happy #StartASpark day. Today, I bring u LGBTQIA+ books. Its another part of my life as seeing as I identify as Bisexual and my child identifies as Trans. Its a very hard topic nowadays. I wish i could shout out into the world and say I am proud to be the mother of a Trans person, but i want to be safe and keep my family safe.

AnnCrystal May you and yours always be safe in this insensitive world 🙏🏼💝💝💝.

While I am heterosexual, I have zero issues reading stories with LGBTQIATS+ (Two-spirited) characters.

Master's of Death was really good by Olivie Blake.

And Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne. Haven't continued the series yet...this is the book that rekindled my love of dragons.

OMG! I finally manage to participate in #tuesdaytunes 😱 Literally, each Tuesday I pick a song and... forget to post about it 😭

This day started out with one of my newest song fixations: Kieran Strange - Rock N Roleplay Baby
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUcGkQdLxIs

It's just stuck in my head and won't get out.

@TieDyeDude

Bookwomble Post it Wednesday, tag it Tuesday! @TieDyeDude is chill 🧊😎🧊 5d
Jari-chan @Bookwomble Really? That would be neat 😄 4d

Did I need to order 20 new books from Book Outlet? Well, no, not really. Did I cross my fingers that this would arrive while hubby is at work so I don‘t have to explain why I‘ve received something like six book deliveries in the past week or so? Well, yes, of course. And then I tried to find places for them so they‘re accessible but not OBVIOUSLY new. Don‘t mind me being a little crazy over here. #bookmail is the best mail.

TheBookHippie This can end at anytime if republicans had a backbone or ethics or even morals…. 5d
Librarybelle Exactly, @TheBookHippie ! If all congressional members, no matter political leaning, actually took a stand, it would be a massive help. (edited) 5d
Scochrane26 They all infuriate me. And that‘s before I start freaking out about Medicaid cuts. 5d

Long time no see Litsy fam! I go in for septorhinoplasty surgery next week and I‘m hoping to get some reading done during recovery (wishful thinking lol) but has anybody ever had this procedure done before? My nose is collapsed internally and externally and I have a severe deviated septum and can‘t breathe through my nose at all. I‘m so nervous and was wondering is there anybody I can confide in? I‘m finally reading Emily Henry! ☀️🌞

JenlovesJT47 Don‘t have any tips for surgery but I hope it goes well for you! Beach Read is very good. 💛 5d
TheQuietQuill Thank you! That‘ll be my first read then from Emily ❤️ @JenlovesJT47 5d

I am cleaning out my bookshelves and have decided to downsize quite a bit. If anyone wants to find me on Pango for some books, give me a search. Happy to bundle or accept offers for the #LitsyLove crew.

CoveredInRust Cause men, historically, have been overlooked in publishing. 😑 5d

jen_the_scribe Poor oppressed men, they just never catch a break 🙄 5d
ImperfectCJ Trying to be charitable, I thought, well, if I take Cook at his word and if this gets more nuanced fiction out there, perhaps it's not all bad, but then I think of Nathan Hill, Kevin Wilson, Percival Everett, Richard Powers, and others, and I'm like...the fantastic literature by men exists and is getting great press already. How will publishing only men get men to read more? Just by giving the illusion of some exclusive men's club? 5d
TrishB Jeez…. 5d
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage If they read more, they might make better choices… 🤪 5d

Hooked_on_books What a crock of shit 5d
RamsFan1963 WTF is this garbage?!? As a man, I don't need books written by men for men. What a load of $#!+ I don't care if the writer is a man, a woman or a very intelligent house cat, as long as it's done well. It sounds like people trying to win favor with the Orange 💩 5d
Hooked_on_books @RamsFan1963 A very intelligent house cat! 😂 5d

Finished a quartet, including the #sundaybuddyread but I‘m not participating in the discussion because I didn‘t stop reading until I was done and don‘t want to spoil it for anyone else. I revisited a childhood favorite, read a second beautiful memoir, and finished up the third in the Angel Tungaraza series for #serieslove2025 . #bookreport #weeklyforecast

Bookwormjillk Sounds like a great couple of reading weeks! 6d
