Daughter of Fortune
Daughter of Fortune | Isabel Allende
An orphan raised in Valparaiso, Chile, by a Victorian spinster and her rigid brother, vivacious young Eliza Sommers follows her lover to California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Entering a rough-and-tumble world of new arrivals driven mad by gold fever, Eliza moves in a society of single men and prostitutes with the help of her good friend and savior, the Chinese doctor Tao Chi'en. California opens the door to a new life of freedom and independence to the young Chilean, and her search for her elusive lover gradually turns into another kind of journey. By the time she finally hears news of him, Eliza must decide who her true love really is.

I read this about 20 years ago but didn't remember anything about it except that the plot has something to do with the California gold rush. I just read it again and loved it.

It was my first Allende's books. It's a soft pick (3/5)

I enjoyed the story, it was well written.
I liked the historical background with Chile, then the Californian gold rush. I wanted to know how it would end.

This was another great book by Isabel Allende. It follows the story of Eliza Summers who as a baby is left on a doorstep of a wealthy family in Valparaiso, Chile. The story also recounts the beginnings of the gold rush in California. A really interesting read.

This took me awhile to read with the holidays. It‘s a slow book, but in a beautiful way that keeps you wondering about Eliza‘s journey & where it will lead. The gold rush is a time I haven‘t read much about so I enjoyed the glimpses into that period & how Eliza navigated it, as well as the prejudices different races faced as they all came to California. Allende is not an author to pick up for a fast read, but one I find is best savored. ⬇️

MeganAnn This is the second book I‘ve ever read by Allende. While I think “The Japanese Lover”which I read a few years ago remains my favorite, this was a good second and I‘ll likely pick up more by her in the future. Read this for #authoramonth @Soubhiville 3y

I enjoyed the style/flow/voice of Allende‘s writing, but I wasn‘t too attached to the characters, and it felt unresolved. Resolved by way of Eliza‘s feelings for her first love, but unresolved in what she would do next and if Tao would be part of it.

I'm so surprised how much I loved this! 😍 I remember reading Allende's Zorro when I was young and loving it but didn't read any more of her books at the time. I found the characters, time of history and the plotline perfectly in line. I hadn't read any other books set in this time and place of history and I just couldn't get enough! This worked sooo well as a audio book as well! 😁🎧

I found three at the first sale and I‘m very happy with those but trying to get them all in this picture wasn‘t going well for me! They‘ll get their time to shine later. #AyUpAugust Day 24: In this epic story, the plot thickens, boils, and bubbles over with passion laced with lewdness, lust tainted with sadomasochism or #TaintedLove, lovemaking styles edged with just the tiniest ounce of violence. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-35

This was my first historical fiction book about the gold rush and from that perspective it was really interesting. Unfortunately, I thought the story line was lacking focus and after 400 pages there still seems to be so much that needed to be covered.

Ddzmini Uh no my husband is not boring he‘s awesome and there‘s been times when I‘ve taken care of him and he‘s taken care of me but that‘s what marriage is 👀😳 6y
TrishB @Ddzmini same! It‘s a partnership. 6y
Kathrin @Ddzmini I agree. I have an awesome husband. I just felt it was the sentiment of the time (1850s) and I thought it was funny. 6y

Latest read. This is only the third book of hers I have read, but I love her work.

gingegingeginge Love her writing! I've only read Island Beneath the Sea and really enjoyed that, may add this one to my 'to read' pile (as if it couldn't get any bigger!) 6y
redfeatherreader @gingegingeginge that's on my TBR! You should also check out The Japanese Lover (4*) and Ripper (3*) quite a departure from her normal style, but good too. Apparently this is the first of a "trilogy" with Portrait in Sepia and House of Spirits. I picked up Portrait at a little free library before discovering it is the 2nd book. So....you may have 3 more on your to read pile ? 6y

Today‘s lunch time read...last December I was at my local library‘s end of the year book sale, my favorite event of the year☺️ as I was shuffling through the piles of books an older lady next to me picked this up, looked at me and said, “have you read this?” I replied that I hadn‘t and she handed it to me and said “do yourself a favor and read it!” I‘m finally getting around to it, and so far so good! #lunchtimereading

I loved this, it takes you all around the world with a great heroine and lots of side characters that are also very interesting. The only downsides to this are that it does end a bit abruptly so if that would bother you then maybe don't read and it's not quite as good as the house of the spirits. Her descriptions are always so textured to me and I want to eat all the food she mentions. #readingwomenchallenge #readharder2018

I enjoyed this selection for book club! This was full of adventures and the ups/downs of the lives of many people...most of the book was centered around Eliza Sommers. From her mysterious birth, to her brave journey to find the man she fell in love with, you can't help but feel admiration for this spirited girl.
The ending was a little abrupt however. It leaves you wanting more!

While this novel was set in a fascinating time, it had way too many characters and the story could have been edited, a lot! The last half was a slog.

Viko I tried once to read this book, but I honestly could not get past the first pages 7y
Nebklvr @Viko I probably wouldn‘t have finished if not for bookclub 7y
Viko @Nebklvr afterwards, I read “The Japanese Lover” & didn‘t love it either 7y
Nebklvr @Viko I know, to be fair, you should read more than one book by an author before ditching them, but I usually don‘t. 7y
Viko Yeah... I mean, one book will give you a good idea of an author‘s style & it will rarely vary from one book to another 7y

A wonderful and light journey through the lives and hearts of people living in 1843's chile. Love, shame, deceit and amazing temptations taking shape during the time of the california goldrush. Some characters take you on journeys throughout the world, while others sit at home with nothing but loss and hurt to keep them company...

Works for #ReadHarder challenge: a book set in Central/South America, by a Central/South American author OR a book with an immigration narrative. I really loved it— adventure, romance, history, a woman passing as a man in the 1800s (a theme that always fascinates me). Eliza is a Chilean orphan being raised by Brits. Her lover goes to California for the gold rush & she follows to search for him, protected by a Chinese doctor who becomes a friend.

This is the first Allende I read, way back in college, and it‘s still my favorite. A rollicking adventure that spans continents and the California gold rush and has all the elements of magical realism that Allende is known for (with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure). Love love love it.
