New Year's Resolutions
New Year's Resolutions | New York Times
99 posts | 1 to read
This e-single compiles compelling stories about New Year s Resolutions from the New York Times archives. Every January 1, people around the world resolve to make their lives anew, but how many follow through with their goals? Pascal Bruckner writes that resolutions only nourish the illusion that changing our lifestyles will change our lives, but John Tierney believes that, with great focus and determination, we can stay on track to fulfilling our resolutions.

Came across this challenge and I'm looking forward to it in addition to my yearly reading goal. I'm hoping to clear out some of my TBR with a focus on books I already own. #beathebacklist #beatthebacklist2022

I promised myself I'd be more active on Litsy in 2020 as well as trying to get through a few more books. I'm hoping for 200 this year.

#2020ReadingGoals: I‘m doing #LitsyAtoZ again & my #Goodreads goal is to read 60 books but if I have to reduce my goal, so be it! I will no longer put off reading longer books! My resolutions: writing more reviews (both Litsy & GR), giving audiobooks another try, being more active on Litsy, and donating or trading in some books so I don‘t have to put myself on a book buying ban! #2020Resolutions #NewYearNewYou #ReadingResolutions #AuldLangReads

Reagan We take a lot of our read books to the used bookstore in exchange for credit and everything else gets donated to the library for book sales! I highly recommend it, we save so much $ buying mostly used and it raises $ for the library! Good luck with your bookish goals! 4y
OriginalCyn620 Great list! 👍🏻 4y
TK-421 @Reagan Thanks! I buy a lot of used books but I‘ve been terrible at trading in read books that I probably won‘t read again. I have a box of 70+ books I really should trade in for credit! I don‘t know if my library takes donations, but there are several worthwhile causes in my city that have fundraising book sales so that‘s definitely an option too! 4y

marleed It‘s really hard for me to donate books I‘ve read and loved. I feel like they become a part of my story. But yesterday I turned all my read books pages out so I‘m only seeing the spines on unread books. I can see donations coming soon as some of those spines no longer hold appeal. I do thrift books and find it much easier to donate a book that only cost me $2! 4y

Does anyone have any book related New Year‘s Resolutions? I am thinking of a few. One is to read more of my older books before buying new ones 🙄🙄🙄. Also, I would like to read more poetry! Does anyone have any poetry recommendations for me?

BookmarkTavern I can‘t recommend Mary Oliver enough! I‘d try this one. 4y

I have been going back and forth about my resolutions, but now, a week into the New Year, I finally think I have settled on something.

So, in 2019 I will...
- try to finish the books from my #RecommendationsChallenge2018
- do #Booked2019
- use the library and audiobooks more, especially for nonfiction
- read as much as possible and don‘t stress about it

#ReadingResolutions

This is one of my #bookishresolutions...I need less screen time so I can have more reading time. 😀

Melissa_J I really need to do this myself! I can‘t believe how much time I spend on my phone! 5y
melissanorr Yes! One of my resolutions is to spend less time on my phone. It's hard to believe how much time I waste scrolling through so many different sites and apps. 5y

Annl Me too! 5y
LauraBeth @melissa_j, @melissanorr @rubyslippereads, @leahbergen, @annl This really worked well for me today! In addition to the 30 min limit for social media and games - I set aside big blocks of time on my phone for complete “downtime” - I got a LOT of reading done! 😀 I think I have like 2 minutes left to look at Litsy for the rest of the day before I get locked out until midnight 😹 (edited) 5y
DivineDiana I did not know about this option! 😲 Think I‘ll try it! 5y
DivineDiana Do you have an IPhone? I couldn‘t find this option? 5y
LauraBeth @DivineDiana I do - it‘s found under Settings>Screen Time on the iPhone. I just went in and set my “downtime” for the day 😀 5y
DivineDiana Thanks so much! 😀 Still not finding. 🤷🏼‍♀️Maybe not available on 7? Will research! 5y
LauraBeth @DivineDiana I have a 7 so it could be something as simple as updating your OS. I‘m running 12.1.2. The screen time feature was on a recent update. 5y
DivineDiana Great tip! Now I just have to free up some space! 😉👍🏻📲 5y

1. I‘d like to read 100 books. I did it this year, I can do it again!
2. To read more books outside my comfort zone. I‘ve discovered a few unexpected great books that way.
3. Try to connect with more Littens outside the Litsy universe.

1- Complete the PopSugar Challenge, the Modern Mrs Darcy Challenge, Nonfiction 2019 challenge, and a British Authors Challenge
2- Read 75 books
3- Avoid buying books in order to read the books I've already bought. This is a serious issue for me, but I'm not going to say I won't buy any books at all. That's just unrealistic!

I am looking forward to the New Years “reset,” and getting into some better habits. I have identified one true resolution and it is......

No buying books in 2019.

I know, right?! I don‘t think it will be as difficult as I thought at first. I have 100s (if not 1,000) of unread books as well as access to digital ARCs & the library! I think the toughest thing will be if one of my fave authors publishes a book & I want to get a hardcover edition.

Zelma Good luck! 👏👍 and there are always birthday gifts, right? 😉 5y
Ruthiella It will be tough! I try to offset my buying with a one in two out(ie read from my shelf) rule. It works...sometimes 🤪 5y
bookaholic1 I know how you feel I keep telling myself that I have 469 books to read. But I can't help myself. I don't smoke or drink so books are my addiction 5y

#ReadingResolutions #bookresolutions 📚My 2018 Bookish Resolutions. The biggie based on this year's performance, is keeping up on rating/reviewing books on Goodreads. I'm going to try to work in more buddy reads-which work for me, rather than challenges (besides Goodreads) which I suck at.😬(Details on the Feb Persuasion Buddy Read will be coming soon.) I am going to continue to reduce book buying & reading more diverse books goals from 2017.👍📚

Ruri_kaichou All your resolutions are great! Especially the last one. That's why I'm not really doing any challenges this year either 6y

I'm going to attempt this, despite usually falling flat with prompts & challenges. My book resolutions are to try & read ~50 books this year. Including children's books. I was able to fly past that number quickly and easily last year since I did not work while I was pregnant (due to HG), or right after she was born. This year will be a little more tricky. I will be adding more audiobooks into my rotation as a way to meet goals as well.

This year my #readingresolutions are so much less specific. While I have other goals like hosting the #poetrychallenge2018 & working on that #MountTBRchallenge & #yearofthechunkster, my main goals are both to read what I feel like when I feel like it AND to continue stretching myself. I'm looking at my TBR and putting books into seasons and thematic categories, deciding what books to read together to enhance the mood or further the discussion.

gossamerchild I love the idea of reading more by mood. Great resolutions! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @gossamerchild Thanks! I just got a little too caught up in challenges in 2017 (my adhd can make me a little obsessive) and I never got to most of the books I was dying to read! So I'm working on more balance in 2018. 6y

A couple Reading Resolutions
1) Finish "The Weird." I didn't make it super far in this behemoth, but I want to tackle it in 2018
2) Try and keep pace with my Nocturnal Reader's boxes as they come in. It's a feat I only managed rhe first month so, you know, easy.
3) Whittle away at the tbr, as always. I got back into preordering books last year, but I've slowed down more on outright purchases (except pulp horror at used book stores).

khooliha 4) Write something, write anything. It's not reading, but whatever. 6y

I have a bunch:

🔸Read 200 books
🔸Limit new book purchases
🔸Finish at least 5 of my challenges
🔸Read at least 25 more #1001books

I‘m planning ahead by filling my challenge prompts with books I already have and books that are available through the library and/or Playster. I‘ve cancelled my BOTM (😮) and will be canceling my Audible as soon as I use up my last credits.

sprainedbrain @melissajayne I did that a few weeks ago... I donated a whole box of books that have been sitting on my shelves for years. Finally just had to ask myself if I was ever going to read them, and for that box, the answer was no. 😳 6y
AmyG Complete the Booked 2018 challenge. 6y
bio_chem06 I'm finishing the last library stack I have and I'm reading the books from my bookshelf this year. So many great books and I keep ignoring them. 6y
needleminding I have mixed feelings about donating books because it's really comforting to me to be around books. And for so many years I was unable to keep more than perhaps 10 at a time. That said, books should be read! Not hoarded! So I'm going to try to read from what I already own first and foremost, then give away books that I don't love or feel a strong connection with. 6y
needleminding Also, your reading challenges and goals are inspiring. 👌🏼 6y
sprainedbrain @jaimeisbionic I know what you mean... it‘s hard for me to let them go, but I‘ve decided that if it‘s not a favorite (those go on my forever shelf) or I don‘t think I will ever read it again, I need to pass it on. 6y
Susanita The last time I reorganized my books, I made a dedicated read-then-donate shelf. Some of them I might just donate. OTOH if I decide to keep some, that‘s okay too! 6y

New Year's Resolutions | New York Times

I'm a big one for resolutions, the making of them not so much the keeping of them. I love beginning projects or beginnings in general really. I have a number of #resolutions for 2018, mostly related to increasing my happiness and finding employment. But I've decided to have no book resolutions except maybe a minimum number of read books. I want to read whatever strikes a chord and feels right, not to fulfill a challenge.
#reindeerreads

Itchyfeetreader With you on this - last year I enjoyed looking at challenges as a way to widen my reading without the commitment and stress ! 6y
ephemeralwaltz Absolutely - I failed at my (first ever) reading challenges this year and I'm okay with that! I now know they're not my thing. 6y
TheWellAccompaniedBook Or my thing either. I appreciate a list that makes me seem other things out, but why commit and give yourself another thing to ‘do‘? Plus then there are those who will feel like failures if they don‘t complete them. Should not be this way, not over Books! 6y

As we near the end of the year, I revisited the reading goals I posted in January 2017.
✅ over 100 total books
#LitsyAtoZ completed
#LitsyReadingChallenge completed
❌ gave up on Read Harder
❤️ Love my #CovertoCover #LitsyGoesPostal group and am looking forward to another year!
✅ read several books on #SerialReader
✅ read a few books in translation
✅ If Litsy blurbs & reviews count, I wrote more about my reading.

I call that success!

Betty We love you too, @Daisey ! 6y
Kristy_K Congrats on all of the accomplishments!! 6y

2. Dorothy Must Die, The Wolf of Wall Street, ACOMAF
3. Thrillers ❤ But I want to try more classics
4. 2-3 maybe
5. Let's hit 15,000!!!

Bookquilter I really like your first goal.... have to keep that in mind. 7y
pppooraikul @BookishMarginalia Woohoo! ❤❤😁 7y
pppooraikul @Bookquilter I find myself started tons of series and stopped at the first few volumes no matter how fun they are. Guess it's my bad habits. 😂 So, this year I'm gonna get it right. 🙏 7y
Bookquilter @pppooraikul I have this habit too. I really should try to catch up with at least 1. I think I have 3 of the Grantchester novels finished and 2 on the TBR... so I am going to try and finish those. 7y
pppooraikul @Bookquilter Good luck with those! We can do this. ✌️ 7y

Well, I'm a little late (and already doing poorly given the addition of 2 extra books to my #BOTM box), but here are my resolutions! I am not counting my current library books in this (4), as they were checked out in mid-December. #bookishresolutions

@RealLifeReading

AThousandLives87 Good luck!!! 🍀🍀🍀 7y
Reviewsbylola I've just accepted I will always add two titles to my #botm box. 😂 7y

Resolutions for 2017! The only thing I'm worried about is finishing Tritons Story, I've been writing it for a little over a year now and I keep "fixing" it so much that I can't get even close to finishing it. ????‍???

saresmoore Woohoo! Great goals! 7y
Claireluana The writer and the editor should never meet! Just finish that puppy and fix it later :) 7y
