Grace | Natashia Deon
For a runaway slave in the 1840s south, life on the run can be just as dangerous as life under a sadistic Massa. Thats what fifteen-year-old Naomi learns after she escapes the brutal confines of life on an Alabama plantation. Striking out on her own, she must leave behind her beloved Momma and sister Hazel and takes refuge in a Georgia brothel run by a freewheeling, gun-toting Jewish madam named Cynthia. There, amidst a revolving door of gamblers, prostitutes, and drunks, Naomi falls into a star-crossed love affair with a smooth-talking white man named Jeremy who frequents the brothels dice tables all too often. The product of Naomi and Jeremys union is Josey, whose white skin and blonde hair mark her as different from the other slave children on the plantation. Having been taken in as an infant by a free slave named Charles, Josey has never known her mother, who was murdered at her birth. Josey soon becomes caught in the tide of history when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reaches the declining estate and a day of supposed freedom quickly turns into a day of unfathomable violence that will define Josey--and her lost mother--for years to come. Deftly weaving together the stories of Josey and Naomi--who narrates the entire novel unable to leave her daughter alone in the land of the living--Grace is a sweeping, intergenerational saga featuring a group of outcast women during one of the most compelling eras in American history. It is a universal story of freedom, love, and motherhood, told in a dazzling and original voice set against a rich and transporting historical backdrop.

Intertwining stories about a mother a daughter, one killed right after the birth of the other, this book ensnares you from its first sentence. As you read about Naomi forced to become a runaway slave and hide in a brothel you are also watching with her as her daughter grows up at the end of the Civil War. Both are little more than girls when subjected to brutality making this book difficult to read at times but it was impossible to put down.

Parts of this story of a mother and daughter, each trying to live free in the South of the 1840s and 1860s, were excellent, but there was so much melodrama and more than a few anachronisms.

Among the many great books about American slave experiences published recently, Grace more than holds its own, and re: readability/memorable characters/emotional punch-packing, it's near the top of my list. I so wish that stories like this - ones that demonstrate how slavery is not a static point on a historical timeline but rather that it continues to haunt American culture and people in embodied ways - would get into many, many more hands!

Christine Thanks again so much for sending me this, @ReadingsByTheC !! ❤️ 7y

Wow! This was such a beautifully written & powerful story. As it weaves between Naomi's story of escaping a plantation & a cruel Massa to a life in a brothel led by a Jewish Madam intent on preserving Naomi's innocence & that of her daughter, a slave that could pass as white as the end of the civil war brings turbulent times in the South. The entire story is told by Naomi after her death & her spirit will hold you captivated.

I put on a loop of podcasts to play all night because it helps me sleep – strange, I admit, but it has worked well for me for many years. I just woke up, it's 8 AM in Tokyo, in the middle of this podcast interview with Natashia Deón, who I had never heard of before. I think I'm in love! ❤❤

sprainedbrain @Elisa It is a monthly credit system... you pay and get your credits once per month, but every day they put a different book on sale for anywhere from $1.95 to $4.95. I seem to pick up a lot of good books that way in addition to those I get with my credits. (edited) 8y

Grace was a bit uneven in execution but there were definite moments of "whoa." The first sentence just hurt, especially when you realize who the narrator is. While I know it's unfair to compare this first book to others, other first novels I've read this year were significantly better (Mothers, Behold the Dreamers, Homegoing, Here Comes the Sun to name a few).

I've read numerous books about the horrors of slavery over the years and I believe that Grace ranks as one of the best. The book did start out somewhat slow for me and I ended up putting it down for a while. However, when I picked it back up, I was immediately drawn back into the story and did not want to put down. I felt that the characters had depth and the depictions, though graphic, gave the story credibility. Well done 👍🏽

I know I say it all the time, but y'all are really wonderful. I'm so proud to be part of such a great community of book lovers. And such a respectful community! Not everyone likes the same books, and that's okay! How boring it would be if we all agreed all the time. YOU ALL ROCK! 😘

brendanmleonard I was thinking about this a lot this weekend and Litsy is just so wonderful. I came from Film Twitter/fandom, which is so mean sometimes. It's so nice to be in a community that is just excited about books! And stuff! Already I'm reading more and am like "READ THE THINGS READ ALL THE THINGS." ?❤️? 8y
Hooked_on_books I adore Litsy and you introduced me to it! Thank you so much! 8y
wanderlustywriter Agree 100%! Best social media platform! 8y

BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard Trolls are everywhere on Twitter!! I agree I love Litsy tons--it's nice to have respectful disagreements when they happen, but it's rare anyway. Definitely my favorite social media platform. 8y
StephTKO I feel the exact same way. I've used LibraryThing and GoodReads. I love both those sites but I'm really enjoying Litsy. There seems to be more of a community aspect here. The only downside to Litsy is that I've been influenced to spend way more money on books than what is reasonable since I joined. 8y
Mixedreader Yes yes yes 8y
CherylDeFranceschi I love Litsy oodles! So much, in fact, that I seem to be using reading time for thumbing through the feed. 😳 Which is just as great, really, because of all the fantastic people here. 8y
Rebeccak I ❤️ Litsy! Though it has quadrupled my urge to quit my job and read foreverrrrrrrrr 8y
Gayan This place is truly amazing. 8y

stargazerblue49 Litsy ❤️❤️❤️ I am hoping that it will expand from just iOS soon so that I can get my Android friends to come and join! I know they will love it as much as we all do! 8y

LizzyM I am seriously addicted and, well, it's all YOUR fault 😊 8y
MamaGina I love it too & I'm finding so many books & genres I want to try that I probably would not have explored browsing in a book shop or at the library. I'm here because you recommended Litsy on one of your podcasts, thanks Liberty!👓📖📚❤️ 8y
