Well, no notes from Jess in this copy, but I can check it off my #RoryGilmoreBookClub list.
It is beat generation stuff. I don‘t admire them. I find them to be miserable and self-centered. I didn‘t like On the Road by Kerouac either.
#MarvellousMay check-in time!
I read 52/275 pages of Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore
On Saturday morning my nephew texted me from City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco, which prompted a reread of Howl by Allen Ginsberg (18 pages).
Total: 70/355 pages
Thank you @Andrew65 !

UNPOPULAR OPINION
Ginsberg really loves his nudity (does he want to be a nudist?!), male genitals, and what I‘m guessing is meant to allude to sex. He comes off as angry and vindictive in places. He seemed to think Walt Whitman was a predator of underaged boys which is just ridiculous. It was hard to tell. Some of this poetry didn‘t even come off as lucid. No thank you. Hard pass for me.

I‘m not sure about this collection yet. The first poem was so confusing and all over the place I didn‘t get past the first page. Forget the other 11 pages. The second poem was very in your face and almost crude in places. This one was interesting, but I‘m not sure why he thought he‘d find Walt Whitman in a grocery store (or glaring at grocery boys). @TheBookHippie

Taking this for a spin as part of my 2020 Adventure in Poetry. Right off the bat, the first poem is 12 pages long. I‘m not sure this is going to go well.

One of my students suggested this to me, and it was on sale, so of course I bought it.

Hooray! I finished my #BookAWeekChallenge with Howl for Banned Books Week! Then I watched the docudrama Howl with James Franco. When he reads the poem it‘s animated so I definitely recommend it for others who have read this.
Dirty enough to warrant a trial? No, but I looked up all the names mentioned & got quite an education!
Thank you for hosting and giving me encouragement @TheReadingMermaid ! 🧜🏾♀️

The movie Howl was screened as part of the Edmonton #Poetry Festival. Love the courtroom scenes. Love the poem.
“Concentrate on what you want to say to yourself and your friends. Follow your inner moonlight; don't hide the madness. You say what you want to say when you don't care who's listening.”
Beautifully written poetry that's relatable for any generation. Ginsberg is brilliantly insane in his poem, Howl. Highly liberal ideas displayed in fast paced & urgent lines of poetry. The emotion can be felt between each page. Highly recommend!

Finished this slim volume of poetry last night. Not only a fantastic first line but iconic as well.
Book 2 for #MountTBRChallenge completed!
Last book of 2017: I love Ginsberg! His poems are so pertinent for today--reading these aloud to my husband tonight was invigorating and just fun. A quote I thought Littens would like: "My books piled up before me for my use/waiting in space where I placed them, they/haven't disappeared, time's left its remnants and qual--/ities for me to use--my words piled up, my texts, my/manuscripts, my loves." Purchased at City Lights in San Fran!
You should read Allen Ginsberg!

Finally crossed #citylights off of my bookstore bucket list. Had the poetry floor alone for a few minutes, sat and looked out of the window and it was heaven.
Everything is Holy!
I was busy all day yesterday, so Happy Howl Day today!
Who else had a crush on this guy?! 😍
PS: I had to use Howl for the reason you all know ...
Ginsberg❤ I love my beat poets (1/2)

'Howl' is an amazing poems. There is so much to it. You have the surface anger of Ginsberg directed at the abundant drug use that is killing his fellow artists and thinkers. But also there is the anger at society for not accepting the "Beat Generation" and the way they think and they way they believe. There are some amazing lines in this poem as well. #litsypoerty365
At the risk of sounding like a stereotypical English major, I urge all of you to read Howl at some point.
Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, everything is holy, every day's an eternity, and this day is my wedding anniversary!
My family went to San Francisco and all I got was this FANTASTIC shirt (+ lots of other swag from City Lights Books AND x-rated fortune cookies).

"Moloch, whose poverty is the specter of genius..." More from the Boston Public Library, because it was the first time I brought my Jason.
#TBT I was about this age when one of my college professors taught Howl by Allen Ginsberg. I was so naive. Howl both intimidated and fascinated me. Later that semester, Ginsberg came to Grand Rapids to give a reading. I dragged my younger sister with me because I was too scared to go alone. What an experience! Watching him perform is an experience I'll never forget. Every so often I reread Howl to remember that evening when my world expanded.
I reread this poem every so often. It affects me every time. ?
Introduction by William Carlos Williams: "Hold back the edges of your gowns, Ladies, we are going through hell."
#TBT - I love this picture of my brother and me reading. This was taken in Boston in 2001. We look so late-90s. 😂
Happy Birthday, Allen Ginsberg (b. June 3, 1926).
Starting the day off with all my faves.
